Updated. Didn't realize I miskeyed it, apologies!

As for your post Tookie, I was just going to have it happen kind of concurrently. He's not that far from the table, so it's not a hugely destabilizing thing.

For Geran, it's not so much that it's a high DC, it was an impossibility at the moment. He's completely plastered, only a few weeks out from having watched his son get hauled out in front of everyone and hung and THEN the kid's fingers were cut off and nailed to their door. In six or eight months, sure, he may be up for something. Right now? He's so far into his misery that it's amazing he can even manage to get dressed. Then, he effectively dies and is literally watching his son try to embrace him from across their version of Elysian Fields/Heaven/The Other Side and right as he's about to be reunited with the ONE thing that he misses, a well meaning burst of healing energies rip his son away from him and bring him back to consciousness where he cannot move his legs and he's still without his son. You then tell him that his son will literally be waiting an ETERNITY for him. He's a broken man. :(

ANYWHO, back to the exciting encounter with the scruffy man from Tavern A!
The man puffs his chest out, sweeping a cloak back to reveal a small shining badge on his belt.

You must be some of those outta-town relatives of old man D'allarae huh. Don't know the tax collector's lieutenant when ya see him, eh? That's a fine right there in its own right. But since it's yer first time, I'll see to it the charge is levied against yer cousin or whatever bollocksload he is. You can just call me Lieutenant Eldarand for the time being. Now, put yer hands up, the way I see it, you all just committed murder in the village o' Willowdark. Since no duly appointed law is here at the moment, on account of you killin' 'em, I'll have to administer justice my own self. As he speaks, a heavy crossbow swings up from under his cloak, trained on Kaio.

Since I hid my hands and used magic all of a sudden may I be granted surprise advantage? (I'll roll anyway to save time, and of course you can disregard it if you dislike it.) Also since Geran was ready he's firing his blast before he pulls out the crossbow. (Oh yeah, since I took this action previously, is this a bonus action, or still an action. That rule is a bit fuzzy to me.)
Put my hands up? As you wish suddenly Geran springs his hands up from behind his back and fires the same beam of energy at Eldarand.

OOC:
No, because Eldritch Blast requires you to also speak. So even though your hands were hidden, your speaking gave you away. This will consume your action.
As your blast streaks out, catching him square in the chest, he takes a single step back to secure himself. With a cough, he raises his crossbow and lets a bolt fly free at Geran.

The bolt hammers into your shoulder, dealing 6 damage.

Combat. Geran began hostilities with the blast. Eldarand was in the process of bringing his weapon up, so he's getting to take his action as part of this surprise action. Eldarand wins initiative and goes first.

Eldarand smiles as Geran is slammed with the bolt. He stalks forward dropping the crossbow and pulling a mace off his belt. As he closes to your warlock, he swings quickly, cracking Geran straight upside the head with the heavy implement, dealing 8 damage. Geran slumps to the ground, unconscious.

He turns to the other two adventurers.

Now, you puttin' your hands up or dropping like him? he says with a smile, revealing browning rotted teeth.

Combat! PCs can act. Kaio and Rixon may act. Geran, a death saving throw please (1d20, 10 or higher you get 1 success. 9 or lower you get 1 failure. Nat 20 you get 1 HP and regain consciousness. Nat 1 and you get 2 fails. 3 total fails and you die.

He casts as a reaction to the bolt first.
Ouch! You'll pay for that! Geran points his finger at the assailant and mutters a quick chant, surrounding the Lieutenant in hellfire.
Using reaction to cast Hellish Rebuke (The creature must make a Dexterity saving throw. It takes 2d10 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.)

His previous actions all still occur.

Gotcha. Want me to make the save now, or wait until everybody else goes?
Jan 11, 2017 2:28 am
OOC:
You can make it now. All three of you can act in any order. Nice play with the rebuke though. :) Unfortunately, he's not a TOTAL pushover.

I do my best xD. Since locks have limited slots, I focus on E.B. for my attacks, and backup stuff for my actual spells. I made a good decision.
Geran feels the blow knock him down, and the pain soars through every nerve. He fights it as best he can, persevering and remaining resilient.

Yeah, EB is easily one of the best cantrips in the game, especially when you can pick up agonizing blast to add your CHA modifier to the blast. Which reminds me, he only took 7 damage from your Eldritch Blast. There is no additional at level 1, just 1d10.

Rixon grits his teeth as Geran drops in a burst of flame. Not today. Not another.

He dodges deftly behind the large man, looking for a place to bury the points of his swords.

Rixon's rapiers each find their home in the man's back, sliding between a pair of ribs and skewering his heart from two directions. The silver tips burst forward from the lieutenant's leather armor. With a gurgle that dies unvoiced in his throat his eyes flutter closed and he slides to the ground, unconscious and dying. His chest still heaves slightly as he struggles to live.
Jan 11, 2017 3:13 am
Kaio moves to the lieutenant, sword drawn. "Pick your battles better next time, friend," he says, holding his blade to Eldarand's neck. "Where is your collection stash?" he presses the blade to the large man's throat, drawing a line of blood. "Answer now and I kill you quickly. Refuse, and I carry you into the wilderness in this state and leave you to die slowly - possibly at the hands of a scavenging animal?" he pauses a moment. "Just think how it would feel to have your flesh ripped off by a passing wolf-pack... no one would hear your screams. Is this Notter worth that to you?"
OOC:
Adding intimidation roll, if necessary.

Oh. I thought chest heaving as he struggles to live means he was still conscious. Shoot! That ^^ was pretty awesome!
Jan 11, 2017 3:20 am
OOC:
:) nah, he's out. Just not fully dead yet. Giving you guys an opportunity to figure out what to do with him, since you assaulted one of the favorites of Notter in front of a bar full of witnesses of an unknown allegiance.

If someone revives him, that whole scene can play out. :)
Jan 11, 2017 3:22 am
OOC:
RETCONNNN!!
"Rixon, can you revive him?" Kaio says, urgently.
OOC:
If he can/does, the above happens.

Kaio, he's a monster. He deserves death. What do you want him alive for? And seemingly more than our compatriot? Geran is vastly more deserving of what limited abilities I have.
OOC:
It IS cool. Rixon just needs a damn good reason ;-)
Rixon kneels and places a hand on each body, but he allows the Light to mend Geran only, for the moment.
