The Adventure: Chapter 2

Kaled Del is never quiet. The Forge runs day and night, and all manners of industry connected to the forge continue to work like cogs driven by a great wheel. But the Grand Seneschal had cleared the docks, delaying shipments and rerouting work teams, so the edge of the Graywater in this early morning was the quietest it had ever been in the city.

A barge loaded with useless rocks awaited the Seekers and the Watchers. They were to crew the vessel under the pretense of a barge crew delivering an ore shipment to Issica so that they could leave the city undetected. To go upriver, barges are connected to long chains and pulled through the current. The barge would be connected to various winching stations along the journey through the Graywater caverns. Once on the surface and in calmer waters, the crew would push the barge forward with sturdy poles.

To disembark, the Seekers need only pull a lever and hop on the barge.

Stonemother Dwalia arrived twenty-five minutes early. Twenty-five was the product of five and five, and Dwalia was convinced that five was the holy number of the All-Father. She was working on a paper about how the probabilities of many goal-oriented events tended towards multiples of five rather than being analogically distributed, and thus Moradin's signature on the fabric of the universe.

Dwalia was not surprised that she was the first. If everyone was as thoughtful as her, she mused, they would have all arrived at the same time, which would be suspicious.

All things have a function, even dysfunction?

She discarded the thought right away. Such a thought would lead to madness. No, dysfunction was not useful unto itself. This must merely be a coincidence.

Disguised as a dockworker, Dwalia's armor clinked slightly under her heavy burlap cloak. She got to setting the chains on the barge as she had researched. Sweat beaded on her brow as she tightened the chains to the extent they needed to be. The work was hard but it was also methodical and pleasing to her.

The barge was rigged one-hundred percent correctly. One-hundred, a most pleasing multiple of five.

Now, where were the rest of them?

"By Moradin's hairy arse," Guildleader Prust swore under his breath as he clanked loudly down the stairs in his disguise, not bothering to hide the sound of his combat boots. It was hard enough to be working off his hangover. Now he had to put up with the smug look on her face that she put the whole ship in order by herself.

Probably fer the best, he conceded. He hated doing that shit. What's the point of being a Guildleader if you still have to do grunt work?

She might be as cold as those dripping-wet chains, but damn me to hell if she isn't a fine woman.

He strode up the pier, deciding to redirect rather than to suffer that disappointed gaze.

"Ha, forgot what time we're supposed to arrive and got here early did ya?" He loved watching that vein in her forehead throb.
Jan 13, 2017 11:03 pm
Thorin and Bruenor soon arrive at the boat. Bruenor hugs Thorin, gently kissing him on the cheek one last time. Thorin soon heads on to the boat. Seeing Guildmaster Prust, he says, "I don't want to have to deal with any of your arguing while on the journey. Understand?"

Len

Jan 14, 2017 1:12 am
"Starting fights is bad for business, my Da used to say. But losing fights is worse. If the Stonemother gives me peace, then I'll give her peace."
Jan 14, 2017 1:16 am
"I will NOT deal with your petty bickering with her. Understand?"

Len

Jan 14, 2017 1:26 am
"And her petty bickering with me? Why is this all my fault? If someone questions my honour or my courage, I'm not going to sit there and take it! So you go tell her to keep it under control I won't stoke the fire."
Jan 14, 2017 1:40 am
"You both are acting like children with your bickering. No one else wants to hear it."
Jan 14, 2017 2:01 am
Aldrik shows up ten minutes late in full armor, several flasks strapped to his belt. "Am I the last one ta arrive?"

Len

Jan 14, 2017 5:10 am
Dalia emerges from the barge's hold and sees Aldrik clanking about.

"Subtlety is not your strong suit I see. Nor is punctuality. I expect better, considering the importance of this mission. Even worse, you are NOT the last to arrive. "

Prust started to speak, presumably to criticise Dalia's manner, but then saw Thorin's stern look and thought better of it.
Jan 14, 2017 6:27 am
Torden arrives late, having gotten a little lost in tunnels that had been changed since he was last in Kaled Del. "My apologies, everyone." he says softly. He steps onto the barge with ease, betraying a familiarity with water travel. Torden is looking forward to being on the surface again.

The Watchers led the Seekers below decks. Guildleader Prust removes his roughspun cloak to reveal a handy haversack.

"It holds the strongbox with the money and documents that prove we built their telescope. Maps and rations for everyone for three weeks. Oh, and a hearty supply of these," he winks, as he produces some sample flasks from the haversack.

There was a commotion above decks. Other barges were loaded and nearly ready to move.

"We cannot delay any longer, we must depart now or arouse further suspicion."

"It's worse than ya think, Stonemother. If the barge's back up then we'll have a real show on our hands. You jam one cog in the machine and everything will grind to a halt! The Guildwardens will be on us in a few moments and then Kaled Del's great hope will come across looking like incompetent boobs."

They turn to you. "Do we leave without Finn Stonelost or not? "

"Aye, Torden. We need to trust each other and stick together."
Jan 14, 2017 6:03 pm
"But where is that hill dwarf?"

Len

Jan 14, 2017 7:53 pm
Dwalia's ears perk up. She straightens herself and produces an ornately carved stone rod. Light burst forth from the rod, filling the cargo hold.

"Finn Stonelost, reveal yourself at once!"

Len

Jan 14, 2017 8:44 pm
There is a loud and on the hull of the ship. A gruff voice barks from the outside.

"Hey! What's the hold up, crewmen?"
Jan 14, 2017 9:09 pm
well there goes our cover. Finn. Comes out from behind a pile of rocks Thanks for giving our position to everyone just as the gruff voice sounds Finn pulls the lever

Len

Jan 14, 2017 11:14 pm
The chains creak as the machinery thunders into action. All of a sudden the barge lurches forward sending everyone tumbling.

Finn had to endure lectures from both Dwalia and Shale, but it was nice to see the two enemies agree on something for once.

The journey is long and physically grueling. The barge bashes and crashes its way through the tight tunnels, knocked about by the strong current. At every winching station, chains must be unattached and then reattached and tightened, all at a speed that you wouldn't think was possible if you didn't grow up in Kaled Del. At some points, the winching stations hoist the barge right out of the water and up alongside waterfalls.

Is there anything any of the characters want to do on the boat (cast spells, ask questions, etc.)?
Jan 14, 2017 11:17 pm
"How long will the journey take?"
Jan 15, 2017 12:28 am
Aldrik is doing what he can do avoid getting seasick(or the equivalent).

Len

Jan 15, 2017 12:33 am
The Guild leader speaks with authority on the subject: "The whole trip takes a full-loaded barge about twelve hours before it reaches Rustygate, and then by pole a few hours to Issaca. Should be there by nightfall."
Jan 15, 2017 12:35 am
"Alright. Thank you." Thorin soon grabs the side of the ship, hoping not to become seasick but failing at doing so.

Len

Jan 15, 2017 4:59 am
The journey continues for many hours of hard labour and nausea. About two hours from Rustygate, you prepare to ascend the final and largest of the waterfalls. You attach new chains to the heavy iron rings on the side of the boat in preparation for being lifted straight up into the air alongside the falls.

With 50 feet to go, about 150 above the rocks, the boat suddenly stops. The cacophonous machinery above falls silent and as your ears adjust you realize you can hear the sounds of slashing steel and
screaming pain.

Prust is the last to get above decks.

"What in Moradin's name is...?!"

At that moment a Dwarf body falls from the winching platform and crashes into the deck of the barge. A black arrow sticks out of one of his eye sockets.

"Goblins!" Dwalia cries out, the most emotional you've ever seen her.

Len

Jan 15, 2017 5:04 am
You can't see what's going on at the platform because you are underneath it, but if you climb one of the two massive chains hoisting your barge (DC 15 Athletics) they will lead you to the platform. Alternatively, there is a service ladder built into the cave wall. With a running jump you could leap off the boat and catch the rungs (DC 15 Acrobatics or Athletics) and climb up that way. If you can find a way to get the boat closer to the ladder, it would reduce the DC significantly. And of course, you could do something entirely different.
Jan 15, 2017 5:38 am
Hearing mention of goblins, Aldrik charges at one of the huge supporting chains to get closer to the fray.

Rolls

Athletics - (1d20+7)

Torden moves to Dwalia's side. "Stonemother. Can you climb?"
Jan 15, 2017 6:16 am
Drake go up there and be ready to help and stay invisible. Finn closes his eyes to be able to see through the eyes of Drake and Cast False Life on himself in preparation of what might come

Len

Jan 15, 2017 7:41 am
Dwalia looks at Torden and gathers her courage.

"Moradin is my strength" she speaks, and her whole body is suffused with a warm glow. She gestures to Torden to take the climb first.

"After you, Torden Stormhammer."

Dwalia casts Guidance on herself.

Len

Jan 15, 2017 8:05 am
Guildleader Prust roars into the mists of the waterfall, rage boiling in his veins.

"Bwah! Let us bathe in green blood tonight! CLANGEDDIN SILVERBEARD, Father of Battle and the Lord of the Twin Axes! Witness my ... ouch!"

Dwalia bonks the Guildleader in the head with her mace. "Gods be good, shut your mouth! You watch yourself up there, Shale. The mission loses all credibly if either Watcher perishes!"

"Aye, is that your way of telling me you still care about me?"

She rolls her eyes as she hooks her mace back on her belt, ready to climb.

Torden smiles as he recognizes the divine power enveloping Dwalia. He utters a short prayer, and he himself is suffused by a similar glow as he gets a clumsy start clambering up the chain.

The platform above suddenly lunges, smashing the boat into the cavern wall. A ripple surges through the chain. Aldrik hangs on fine but Dwalia and Prust get their hands caught between links as the chain slackens and tightens back. In the struggle to pull themselves free they dislodge things from storage pouches on their person: Prust loses a precious flask of gutbuster and Dwalia drops a health potion.

Torden takes a worse hit, the whiplash effect smashing him into a rock jutting out of the cavern wall.

They manage to reach the top after that.

Thorin also struggles on the chain when the platform shifts, and like Torden is slammed against the wall. His husband's armor takes the worst of it, however, and you make it to the top.

Finn, if you are planning on staying put on the ship that is fine, but if you want to be up on the platform you'll need to roll a check to jump to the stairs, climb the chains, or trying something else clever. Let us know either way and I'll go ahead and get initiative rolled.

Len

Jan 15, 2017 7:36 pm
Once you reach the top, you see the platform has been overrun. The 5 remaining crewmen working the platform defended it bravely, but now lie unconscious at the feet of three massive Ogres holding fractured stalactites as clubs. As if that wasn't bad enough, the Ogres are saddled and are being ridden by Goblin archers. One of the Ogres is busy smashing the winching mechanism, and the other two turn to face you as you jump off the chain.

"MOAR KILL!" the ogres cheer in broken Common as they raise their stone clubs, ready to party.

Some notes: If the winching mechanism is broken, your boat will fall to the bottom of the chasm and smash. The five unconscious Dwarf crew men are armed with two hand axes and will roll death saving throws at the end of every round. Also remember to keep the Watchers alive, and of course, yourselves!

Can I get at Ogre 3 without going through the other two? And how close is he to the edge?

Len

Jan 15, 2017 7:47 pm
Thanks for asking. The platform is small enough that you can make it there but the 2 ogres bar you way, so you would have to take a disengage action or take an opportunity attack from one of the ogres.

Also, there is a large, sturdy safety fence that rings the platform so you can't be easily shoved off the edge.

Edit: I should also mention the goblins can't be hit by melee attacks unless you climb the Ogre or the Ogre is knocked prone. Also you can get to any of the unconscious crew without opportunity attacks.
Jan 15, 2017 9:04 pm
Drake can you see anything to throw down? Finn yells up in the confusion

Len

Jan 15, 2017 9:22 pm
The platform can rotate, so if Drake can succeed at a DC 15 investigation (int) check he could spend his action to figure out how the controls work and get you close enough to the cave wall to climb the service ladder and appear beside the winch, no roll required.

We can Retcon it so that this is taking place while the others are climbing. If Drake succeeds, you will start combat by the winch. If he fails, you will still be on the ship during the first round of combat.
Jan 16, 2017 3:01 am
Torden grunts when the bucking chain slams him against the wall. He dangles one-handed from the chain link, swinging crazily for a few moments, several days' rations spilling out of his pack before he can right himself. Torden secures his gear and keeps climbing. Gaining the platform he utters words of power as he leaps off the chain...

Hey Jabes, quick rules thing. From 5e Player Basic Rules p. 79.
Quote:
A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven’t already taken a bonus action this turn. You can’t cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.
So, you can either cast Shatter or Spiritual Weapon, but not both. Would you like to cast Thunder Wave instead, as per your post in the OOC Discussion? Or we could take either of those spells as cast with the die rolls you already made. Your call.

The dazed dwarf looks up, blinking blood and tears from his eyes. He is small by dwarven standards, wiry and lithe. You might almost confuse them for a halfling if it wasn't for the magnificent handlebar moustache he is sporting.

"BALLS! Yer a fookin' bee-utiful sight!"

He rolls over, grasps his hand axe and shield and rises to one knee. Turning to the Ogres, he roars like a dwarf three times his size.

Torden reels under the onslaught from Blacktongue and his goblin rider. Yanking the goblin's arrow from his shoulder, the cleric is torn between protecting the Watchers and protecting the winch as losing either would be disastrous to the mission.

Another goblin arrow flies past Torden's face as he begins to cast more spells. With a throwing motion he sends a glowing blue hammer hurtling towards Grudgestomp. He quickly follows up with a crushing fist gesture, which brings a gout of divine blue flame crashing down on the ogre from above.

While Torden is preparing the ritual, the winch crew takes care of its injured members and then gets the barge up to the top of the waterfall and rigged up to the next chain.

After loudly tooting his own horn for his great display of combat prowess, Guildleader Prust expresses concerns:

"We haven't had an attack on the winch stations in twenty some years! It just goes to show how weak we have become. We've stripped the garrisons along the Graywater to replace our losses on the front lines, and now the Goblin King is probing for weaknesses. Who knows, a whole army might be out there in the tunnels! If the winch stations go down, it won't matter how much we mine because we'll never be able to trade it."

Each goblin has a crude but effective shortbow, scimitar, and quiver of arrows. Their leather armor is too small (and too smelly) to be of much use to you, but it's there.

The ogres have the goblin saddles, a recent evolution in the Goblin King's tactics, as well as their greatclubs and flea-ridden loincloths. On Grudgestomp you find a bag of what seems like debris, trophies of his favourite smashings. It includes a peculiar broken blade of Dwarven design, just the hilt and the first foot or so of the blade intact. What remains of the blade is coated in silver and the hilt is inscribed with the sentence "Stay safe, my love."

After some debate, the peril to the city is deemed to great to let this security breach be left unreported to the Master of Arms. Torden is selected to return to Kaled Del through the lesser-known tunnels to warn the city, and will meet up with the rest of the party in Issica at the Barge Wright Inn.

Jabes is taking a couple days off to get better from an illness, hence Torden's leave. Get well, Jabes!

Once the barge is set up and Torden's prayer is complete, Torden bids farewell and disappears down a dark path into the maze of stone that only the most experienced of navigators can travel safely.

Everyone boards the barge again and the winches begin their pull. Within two hours, the party reaches the mouth of the cave, barred by the ice-caked Rustygate, a massive enchanted portcullis whose strength belies its run-down appearance. The Rustygate crew work quickly to disconnect the barge from the final chain. Their breath is visible in the cold air, so far now from the warm core of the world. From there the party continues up the river by pole.

The hard work of manning the poles is offset by the breathtaking sunset. Scarlet, then amethyst, emblazoned the enormous sky, then it darkened to obsidian. Beyond the scattered clouds, the blue planet of Sorrow dominated the sky, around which the Dwarven world and all the worlds spun.

You arrive at Issica at 9pm. The city is a large, walled trading city built on the two banks of the Graywater. Merchants from all over come to do business, trading all manners of goods for the precious metals mined at Kaled Del, as well as trading with each other.

Other than the caravan stockade at the northern edge of the city, there are few roads in Issica. Most of the city is a network of canals, and it is hard do find a Issican who does not own a boat or at least a raft. Foot traffic is facilitated with a spiderweb of walkways and bridges. At night, the Lamplighter guild illuminates the canals with a network of Elvish beacons, and the city is bustling at all hours.

The population of the city is mostly human, but races from all over the Nine Moons can be found here. Dwarves make up a visible minority. They are mostly Stonelost Dwarves that found it easier to find work in Issica, but there are also dangerous exiles and fugitives that sometimes give Dwarves a bad name here.

Issica is also relatively lawless. The Moneylender Guild functions as the closest thing to an organized government, and it only concerns itself with making sure Issica remains a lucrative place to do business. Although the Moneylenders employ a mercenary company to patrol the city (the Hundred Swords), they are corrupt and anyone can buy their way out of trouble with enough gold. Peace is mostly kept in Issica because nations do not want to impede the flow of gold from this city and harshly police their own.

Guildleader Prust does the talking as you pass through security at the east rivergate. From there you are free to travel into the city as you wish. Some places of note to investigate:

The Barge Wright Inn is a comfortable, well-known inn that is owned by Dwarves loyal to Kaled Del. It is your meeting place for reuniting with Torden and a good place to talk to locals.

The Loremaster Guild religiously tracks the major events of the city going back many centuries. It is well known that their official publication of events is heavily censored by the Moneylenders, but they might have records that closer resemble the actual events that transpired.

The Temple of All Faiths advertises itself as a place of serenity and peace amidst all the coin and corruption. Worshipers from all faiths are welcome and they provide spellcasting and other religious services (for a steep fee).

The Warehouse District is the center of organized crime. It is rumoured you can buy the more rare and exotic things in the world there for the right price, no questions asked.

The Bazaar is open every day from dusk till dawn. Stock up on any items you want; prices are twice what are listed in the PHB.

The Constabulary is where you can contact the Hundred Swords.

OOC:
The list above is not meant to be exhaustive. If you want to do something, just ask and I'll let you know if it is possible in Issica.

So, what would you like to do?

"I think we should head to the inn for the night."

I realized back there that I forgot to pack any rope but I think most places will be closed this late so let us go to the Inn.
