Baern moves forward with Ryyrik.

Billy helps Phineas get the sled moving again. Not one ta share, is he? he mutters.

Phineas struggles with the sled in the mud, his arms not really up for the task.

"Thanks Billy. I feel like this would have been easier on ice."

After they get it moving, Phineas follows Ryyrik as best he can.

Baern, noticing Phineas struggling, leaves the tracking to Ryyrick and goes to help. He says nothing as he joins Phineas at the drag rope of the sledge.

This is gettin' ta be ridiculous. Billy stops Phineas and Baern pulling the sled. Here. He hands his Bag of Holding to Phineas, indicating he should hold it open. He inspects the corpse of their fallen leader to make sure he didn't come back to life when things thawed out. If he didn't, he hefts him up over his shoulder and, as gently as he can, lowers him into the bag. No disrespect meant, Cap'n. He closes the bag, hefts it back onto his back, and says, There. Now we ain't a spectacle pullin' a sled over mud.

It's all Baern can do not to crack a smile. He succeeds.

Ulfren, who had been pushing the sled with little difficulty ever since the old woman's house, stood and watched in silent amusement as the others struggled with it, just to see how they'd do.

With a chuckle and a shake of his head, he finally mutters, "Don't seem right, but I ain't hearing him complain." Ulfren continues forward.

From his position Gunnar watches the others stuff Clawhammer head-first into one of their magical bags. The sight of his boots disappearing into it is as hilarious as it it is macabre, and Gunnar can't help but chuckle.

Hold up a moment, boys, Billy calls. Phineas, give me a hand checkin' out one a these. Somethin' killed 'em, but I don't see a mark.Edit:

"I am always happy to be of assistance. It is a curious thing ... do you think the ice affected orcish physiology different? Or perhaps the magic was more malicious against them than us? I once read ..."

It is a wonder that Billy can get any work done with Phineas yammering on.

"Maybe Ryyrik scared 'em to death with that dirty mouth of his," suggests Ulfren.

Though not a scholarly man, Billy nevertheless has an appreciation for learning and listens to Phineas's talk with interest.

Well, he's dead, Billy declares with a rueful smile. Beyond that, I'm stumped. Seems more up Gunnar's alley than mine. Magic and the like. He looks at Gunnar expectantly.

From his position Gunnar can see the squad has found another orc. Must be something interesting, because now they're waving him over. He slings his rifle on his back and marches over. The want him to examine the orc. Though his expertise lies more in magical items he still gives it a try.

"So ... I'm not sure we have enough evidence yet, but a reasonable hypothesis might be that humans and dwarves unfreeze okay, but orcs don't. What evidence we have so far supports this hypothesis, but this might also be wishful thinking on my behalf. If this is true however, can we assume there is an intelligence behind this magic?"

"Gunnar, what did you make of the orcs?"

"I'd say there's intelligence to be sure, a better question is was this intentional or was the freezing of humans and dwarves as well as orcs an unfortunate side-effect?"

"That don't hold up," says Ulfren. "If dwarves unfreeze okay, why's Dirk no more?"

And that old woman back there sure didn't stick no dead orc.
