"Where I come from," Baern adds between mouthfuls of soup, "paths are not set in stone as is the way of the dwarves. The trees are living, and will sometimes aid the Circle by changing a path. In this manner, if I come to a place where I know the path led straight North but the trees have shifted so it leads West, I follow. The path had shifted, and yet I follow it. Billy is suggesting that our path has shifted, and we can no longer leave the path and blunder through the undergrowth because we think the path before us is erroneous." Having said his piece, he returns to his soup. This is the most any of you have heard Baern say at one sitting in a long time.

"But then you're still sticking to the path, even if it shifts," says Ulfren.

Billy hits a final, outsized note on his dulcimer and, with a wide friendly grin, shouts, Then let's pack it up and go find that path! He gives his gear a cursory scouring, packs it away, and starts moving out in the direction of the keep, whistling as he goes.
OOC:
Did anyone look over the giant orc while Billy cooked? Just a reminder that no one actually RPed doing so.

Phineas listens intently to the others talk while ravenously eating Billy's delicious soup. As people quiet down and begin packing up, he speaks quietly to nobody in particular.

"Maybe when you're lost in the woods, it's not about finding new paths but remembering which direction is true north."

"I've chosen a path that many of our people think is foolish at best, and heretical at worst - my Father among them. There have been many nights where I questioned whether I had gotten lost. But, being here with you all, I feel like I have found some peace in that. My talents may be Elven in nature and my courage a work in progress. But, my loyalty to my duty and kin are as set in stone as any good dwarf and that is my lodestone to find my way when I am lost."

"Billy, you're right that we might need to adapt to our situation, but in times like these it is just as important to stay true to our nature lest we become like a leaf on the wind."

A reed that bends is still a reed after the storm. A tree that won't bend is kindling.
May 2, 2017 4:01 pm
Ulfren mutters as he packs up, grumbling about paths turning into leaves and reeds, and how the young make no sense these days with their slang.
May 2, 2017 4:18 pm
"Stone takes longer to shape than a reed or a tree but it can be done if you are patient... " Phineas carries on, enjoying the analogy game and the debate.

But, he does not allow it to delay his preparations.

" Many thanks for the soup Billy, and the discussion everyone. I enjoyed them in equal measure. "

And water seeks the path of least resistance, but there ain't a stone can stand against it.

A loud rumble comes from the giant, but it seems like just gas escaping from the corpse.
May 3, 2017 1:34 pm
At the sound, Gunnar whirls around, spilling soup, his rifle trained at the corpse. "Are we sure it's DEAD dead?"

Billy chuckles and says, I think young Baern here made sure of that.
May 3, 2017 8:24 pm
"So here's a question for you smarty-types," says Ulfren. "Is that thing an orc, or is it a giant?"
May 4, 2017 2:56 am
Billy chuckles and claps Ulfren on the back. Why, you might just as well ask if yer a Dwarf or a Blackthaw!
May 9, 2017 6:34 pm
Ulfren laughs, then pauses. "Wait... what?"
May 9, 2017 8:46 pm
How was the stew? Billy asks Ulfren.
OOC:
I never specified what Billy cooked, but I have to say I think Dwarves probably need something a little more hardy than soup!
Let's call it stew.
May 10, 2017 4:50 pm
Distracted, Ulfren replies, "It was fine, considerin' what we had to work with." He sets his pack upon the sled and slips into the harness, ready to head out.
May 12, 2017 4:55 am
Phineas rolls up his small pack and smartly plants his walking stick in the ground, ready to depart.
May 12, 2017 8:31 am
Gunnar pats his belly. "Could do with a drink right now. I wish I had time to brew something. Ah well." He shoulders his pack and rifle. "Shall we move on?"
May 12, 2017 10:02 am
Ryyrik chuckles loudly "What, 1,000 years make you forget who's company you're in?" he digs into his bag and pulls out a flask "We'll move on as soon as you get your fill, you've earned it!" he uncorks it takes a swig and hands it to Gunnar.
May 12, 2017 10:32 am
"I can move whenever you are ready," Baern growls, finish the last of the stew.
