Ulfren plods along the forged trail, following the scouts. "We can hope for the best," he says, agreeing with Ryyrik. Quietly, almost to himself, he adds, "And prepare for the worst."

As the stream comes in to view, it is very small indeed. It is stale, but moving, the water just seems wrong.

"Well Baern, it's been a thousand years. You still know the way?" Phineas jests, trying to make the situation a little less heavy. As they make their way past the stream, they notice the strangeness.

"Hmm, what do you make of this water?"
OOC:
Phineas aids Baern on a Perception check (or whatever skill Lunitar prefers) to figure out what's wrong with the water, as well as casts Guidance. That gives Baern advantage and +1d4 to the skill check.

Billy walks up next to Phineas and claps him on the back, his normally cheerful grin obviously forced, as it has been since they left the frozen land. Seems to me inspecting a stream would be more a job for our resident Druid.
OOC:
Billy casts his own Guidance on Phineas for him to do a nature check. Although I have no idea if he is proficient. Maybe Baern is proficient in nature?

"I'd trust Baern's eyes over my own, but I'll have a look."
OOC:
Yes, Phineas is proficient with +5. But with a total roll of 9, I don't think it'll be enough!

Rolls

Nature (Int) Check + Guidance - (1d20+5, 1d4)

1d20+5 : (2) + 5 = 7

1d4 : (2) = 2

Billy bends down to watch Phineas inspect the stream. As he splashes the water a bit, Billy looks a little sideways at the druid.

Hmm. That may be a wiser course of action.

Ulfren looks upstream, half-expecting a torrential wall of water to come rushing down. He had always warned his son about flash floods, and instinctively he keeps a wary eye.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+3)

(8) + 3 = 11

The water smells a little off, tainted even. This water runs from within the mountains you called home.

"I cannot put my finger on it, but there's something wrong with this water. I'd bet my life on it. Smells ... unusual."
Jul 26, 2017 12:59 am
Well, girls, there ain't no way ta sugar coat it. Somethin's stopped up and fouled the waters. Best we pull up our panties and head on in ta see what done it. Billy grabs his belt, hoists his pants, and heads on in.

"Perhaps the Elves would be good to contact first? Perhaps there is some danger they could warn us about?"
Jul 26, 2017 2:24 am
Gunnar sticks a finger into the stream and pops it into his mouth. A brewer knows water, specially water from his home. "The elves? Maybe. Though I'm anxious to head home and see for myself too. What d'you say, Ulfren?"
OOC:
Trying to get a better idea (or taste) of what the taint might be. Trace minerals? Plant life or other organic substances? Decay?

"Elves." Ryyrik growls "The only people I want to see right now are my own kin... Frozen or not, I want to see them with my own eyes not through warnings of those hairless long limbs."
Jul 26, 2017 4:19 am
"We go home," says Ulfren. "Whatever happened to the water, it's gonna affect the clan sooner or later, if it hasn't already. So we go home first and check things out.

"We're wasting daylight. Anyone got a diff'ring opinion, you can voice it as we walk."
He plods forward, hoping to cover as much ground as possible before the need to make camp.

"Point taken," Phineas says, and does not argue the point further.

Baern stares absently at the water; in truth he has little experience with such things, but he makes an attempt to distinguish all the same.

Gunnar tastes the normal minerals found in the water, but it tastes like it has been boiled, kind of stale with some vegetation type decay flavor to it.

The closer to the mountains you get, the darker and more foreboding the sky seems. No smoke rises from the mountain, if the forge was operating, which it always did, there should be. A raven watches your every move, it is the first sign of life you have seen.

Traveling closer to the mountains, you see a once well worn stone path that led the way to the city, but now is overgrown and lays mostly unused. A boulder blocks too much view up ahead, but there should be an outpost just on the other side of it, if memories can be trusted.

As the path bends around the boulder, the outpost comes into view. The once master carved stone tower is crumbling at the edges and vines cover the majority of it. A slow shuffling figure moves into the doorway and slowly shambles inside, dragging a foot behind it.
