If Billy, as he was about to do a medicine check on these corpses, sees Ryyrik swinging, he would move to block the blow.
Feb 23, 2017 4:42 am
Phineas also moves to block Ryyrik's blow.
"However you feel about orcs, Ryyrik, this is the first evidence we've found of whatever has afflicted us all - do not destroy it! We didn't just promise our king that we would kill orcs, we promised that we would help these people. The best way to do that is to learn what we can from these statues."
"Was this what we looked like? How many others are stuck in time like this? And are they about to thaw like we have? If so, there may be many people still to save - and many orcs yet to slay."
After, Phineas will request Gunnar's counsel and confer with him on the magical nature of these statues. He'll use a help action to give advantage + guidance to Gunnar for an arcana check to understand the nature of this magic and to determine if they are going to thaw soon.

If things settle down with Ryyrik, Phineas will use a help action and give advantage to for a medicine check that Billy wants to do (Phineas won't presume to cast Guidance on a Cleric). After, Phineas will request Gunnar's counsel and confer with him on the magical nature of these statues. He'll use a help action to give advantage + guidance to Gunnar for an arcana check to understand the nature of this magic and to determine if they are going to thaw soon.

"Oy, Ryyrik!" calls Ulfren. "Let's let them dig their noses into this. Meantime, I think that orc doesn't need his axe, eh? How's about you smash that outta his grip?"
Feb 23, 2017 5:00 am
Nobody smash nothin'! barks Billy. If you kids are all fired up 'bout smashin' somethin', go do it somewheres else and let the adults try to figger out what's goin' on here!
Cast Guidance and a medicine check with advantage from Phineas.

As his clan stands in the way, Ryyrik doesn't slow his swing but instead directs it into the ground avoiding the dwarf body wall. "No, this one is clearly important that my own clan would stand in its protection. Let's not destroy the things we came here to kill. Let's ignore the fact that the man inside the building is suffering the same effect as the orc and would supply the same information." he spits at the orcs feet "Don't forget to kiss his arse after you're done sniffin' it." Ryyrik walks away, pulling out a flask and chugging it while he does.

Gunnar shakes his head as he watches Ryyrik stomp off. He sets his weapon aside and examines the frozen figures.

Billy nods his head in the direction Ryyrik stalked off in. We're going to have to keep an eye on that one. Not sure if his troubles'll ease once he stops pullin' on that flask or if they're about to get worse once he comes up empty. One thing's for certain, the last thing a ship o' fools like us needs is a leaky vessel.

I got the impression that the orc and the human were frozen, as in ice, but I see others got the impression they were stopped in time. If they're stopped in time, Billy will attempt to take the axe out of the orc's hands while he's inspecting the pair.Feb 23, 2017 10:02 pm
Baern watches this entire exchange in silence. He stands a little ways to himself, observing what goes on without much interest or desire to enter in.

My impression was that they were frozen AND frozen in place. Like you'd expect from a sudden burst of instantaneous magical frost.Feb 24, 2017 1:23 am

Yes they are frozen solid with ice, in mid stride like frozen in time.Gunnar's arcana tells him that they can't be unfrozen with warmth, but it's a magical freeze that has them.

During their examination, Phineas says "Ryyrik was right, I think. If we do not execute this orc, we are condemning this human to death when the two thaw. He is far from innocent; had we come across this scene when they were animate, we would have put an axe in him without a second thought. It would be a merciful death, no pain or suffering, and his spirit could move on to be with his ancestors."

Gunnar straightens from examining the frozen figures and dusts the snow off his hands.
"I'll leave you lot with the difficult questions. I'm an engineer, not a philosopher. My particular branch of the study of the arcane deals with how best to apply magic to achieve solutions to the problems, no matter how mundane, that beset us on a daily basis. We Artificers differ from the other practitioners of magic in our view of nature of magic itself, but I'll not bore you with the lengthy discourse. My mentor once said, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
It's plain to anyone this thousand-year frost was caused by magic. I will add to this: these people can't be unfrozen with warmth. I can't imagine why we woke up and they didn't. They may wake up at any moment, or they may not. Which just means our original mission may be as critical now as it was back then."

"If everything has simply been frozen in time, then our original mission has simply been post-poned about 1000 years," Baern continues. He pulls his warhammer from his belt and walks over to the orc. "Do we finish him?"
Feb 24, 2017 3:40 pm
Billy looks sadly at his comrades. Justify it all you want by claimin' it's to protect the human. Make no mistake, you do it outta hate. I won't let a man narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him. If'n one a you want the glory and honor of killing a helpless foe, it's on you. He walks off and sits a good distance away, strumming his dulcimer.
Feb 24, 2017 4:14 pm
"War is hate, Billy," Ulfren says, voice like gravel. "We was sent by our king to apply that against the orcs, as a favor for this human lord."
He unshoulders the harness on the sled and approaches the two frozen figures. "Be that as it may, Billy is right about the honor. Ain't no better fight than a fair one, and we muddy the name of our clan by resorting to the assassins' ways."
Ulfren pulls out a javelin. "Here, see if we can't switch the human's broom for this."

Baern too is uneasy at killing a helpless foe. Rummaging through his pack, he pulls out a good length of rope and cuts it off from the rest. He then uses this to tie the head of the axe securely to the orc's neck. "Should give him a nasty surprise when he tries to swing it, it should," he says matter-of-factly.
Feb 24, 2017 4:30 pm
"Might as well tie his legs together too." Gunnar suggests, before walking away. The situation has just become a mixture of sad and comical.
