Valentin crouches on the tarp as Karabekian gets up. In addition to what Karabekian saw, Valentin recognises that the wounds appear self inflicted. From the position and angle of the wounds, Gardiner appears to have been right handed. The spiraling cut around the head appears to have begun at the top of the head and worked down to the neck (it's evident that he had to move the knife between his hands to perform the cut) The neck wound was delivered in a swift and violent manner.

Across the back of his hands, on his legs and arms and across his blood-covered torso, Gardiner has scarification markings. They are shaped like small spirals. Closer examination of these markings reveals that they actually cover hs entire body. The marks range in age, seemingly acquired over months of procedures.

His face and head appear to be free of the older spiral scars.

Lifting the body slightly, he notices lying under the corpse is an obsidian blade. The blade lies in a pool of blood beneath the body, presumably the murder weapon.

Larry checks the nightstand and finds two books by the desklamp, an old book entitled The Dreamer's Dictionary. There is also a slim journal.

Beside the books is a small corked bottle of liquid and a small vial of off-white powder. Neither are labelled..

Marciano the landlord is still standing in the hallway outside the door.

The liquid is in a bottle and doesn't fit into the pocket safely, but he pockets the vial of powder and the journal, leaving the book on the bedside, before examining the bookshelf.

The top shelf does not have enough books to fill it so a bookend has been used to keep the books upright. The bookend is a monsterous thing, looking like some human-like squid creature.
