Living in the wake of a natural disaster is hard, even for the little magic folk of Candleton, a small gnome settlement that exists (or once existed) on the swampy borders of the Knee Deep. The name Candleton comes from the big folk, who only see little lights dancing around near the edge of the swamp that no one dares enter. Outside of that, nobody knows what it's called except for the people that live there. Most who live there never leave, but in this case, they didn't have much choice unless theydidn't value their lives.

The thunder storm of tonight reminds you of that ungodly evening, hell raining down from the sky in the form of electrical mayhem. The ground shook beneath your feet as you gathered your belongings to save your skin, hovels burning as you ran with the rain whipping your face and eyes. Thankfully you didn't have to run for too long, considering the folk outside that gave your town that funny human name, were about a half a days trip from your once cozy little community. You have been living in Rockdrift for a few months now, settling in quite nicely indeed. Apró, your tongue sours on this night, knowing that many of the gnomes you once lived with share your sadness tonight, though none you personally know seem to have turned up in this large strange town. To you, it's also a little confusing why they call it Rockdrift, considering it seems a little woodsy rather than rocky. The screams of an unhappy child bring you back to the present, remembering that you forgot to lull little Edward Ramsal to sleep, just like Isabella had asked you. The coin is good, the bedding is warm and the food keeps you fat, happy and your mind off the paw, so you prbably doon't mind much. However, tonight, you just want to be left alone.

The rest of you may describe what you are up to on this lonesome and dreary night. Jade, i'm not sure what your character's name is (Hi would be funny though) so introduce her and tell me why you've come to Rockdrift/what you are doing.

Binlee stopped at a certain part of the road, bade his companion stay put, and edged into the woods. Climbing carefully up an old, strange hump in the woods, he could see Rockdrift through a break in the branches. He always stopped here, and enjoyed the view. He tamped leaf into his pipe and expertly lit it, the initial cloud of smoke rising ritualistically above his head. It wasn't much of a view at night, but he could see light from some of the homes, and could tell that the town wasn't on fire.

Returning to the road, he nodded at his cold companion, a young gnome woman named Hannion whom he had rescued from some unwholesome trappers. She had been in their service since fleeing Candleton, and had been all to happy to come with him when he offered to buy her "contract" from the trappers, using up nearly all of his coin to do so. One day he'd have to return to them and see about dispensing his own justice, but even at the thought, he signed a wiping motion across his eyes and whispered a devotion asking forgiveness from Sejorlia. Justice wasn't for him to decide, only to enact. He offered his arm to Hannion, but she walked on her own, and they continued to Rockdrift.

"It'll be only an hour from here, m'lady, and then you'll be free to start your life over. There are several who will want to take you in," Binlee said.

"And you? Will you stay, m'lord?" she all but whispered.

"Only long enough to get you settled, m'lady. I'm afeared that there are many of us still out there, lost in the flight from the swamp," he said, pausing to puff on his pipe, "and justice always needs dispensing."

A swig from my flask brings warmth as the rain leaks through the abandoned shack's rotted roof that I've made my base of oper-.....my home here in Rockdrift for the time being. I prefer the leaks. It reminds that I won't be staying here long. This is temporary... There's too many interesting places to see and interesting things to... experience.

Thoughts of my next move start swirling in my head...then memories of a job...an important job for the Prince...Why can't I remember?....

Footsteps.....Throwing knife in hand...No one knows I'm here... some vengeful merchant who got lucky? I was careful...I'm always careful....

As the footsteps fade I realize it's the thrill of the moment that drives me to take these jobs. Not the inevitable fear and paranoia that results from laying low...wondering if or when they will come for me...Yeah I could do without that mess.

A big swig this time.... I check the hidey-hole under the pile of rags and hay that I use for a bed...The Statue is still there. I wonder what makes it so valuable to her? She didn't even try and talk me down from my fee. Crazy times.. it's no matter...It'll be done with tomorrow.

Bog stood in the alley, face lifted to the sky. The rain pouring over him mixed with the grime and left muddy rivulets running over his boots. But while it never fully washed away the dirt, it did serve to hide the tears that were flowing freely from his eyes. Oh, Elana - if only you were still here. He stood that way for a few more minutes then sniffed loudly and shook his head, adding more droplets to the downpour. He moved into a doorway and dried his face as best he could.

Having composed himself, he sniffed again, this time drawing in the familiar smell of earth and rain. He wasn't quite home yet, but Rockdrift made for a safe haven to weather the storm. As soon as it cleared, he would finish his journey and maybe find some peace. As he stood there, he contemplated all he had seen that evening and pondered the reason why there were so many other gnomes here this night.

You all spend the rest of your night doing as you see fit before catching rest in whatever hovels or homes you have been residing in for the past couple months following the disaster. By morning, there is little evidence of the storm from the night before, merely little pools of water that haven't escaped the cracks between the cobblestones. The soil has been thirsty, for the summer has been been oddly dry for Rockdrift. As the sun creeps up past the roof tops of the little town, the folk that reside within begin to awaken and start their daily routine. What part do the gnomes of Candleton play in the daily hustle and bustle?
May 4, 2015 10:24 pm
Bog stared up at the ceiling of the room he had procured the night before. He had paid far too much for it, but it was oddly one of the few rooms available, so he hadn't objected too heavily. As he lay there, his mind tried to rationalize his experience here in Rockdrift. He had spent the past several weeks traveling home to Candleton from Queen's Wood, and finding Rockdrift full of gnomefolk was the last thing he had expected. Deciding he might think better with a full stomach, he rose and got dressed before heading to the eating area.

As he entered, he was taken aback by how busy it was. He stood just inside in the doorway for a few moments, taking it all in, before weaving his way through the people. He felt someone bump into him and heard a low curse. He spun, just in time to catch a stack of plates that the barmaid had dropped. She had an exasperated look on her face as she apologized and thanked him in the same breath. Waving that aside, he offered his help and carried the plates toward the kitchen.

The kitchen was just as busy, but the hustle and bustle was far more organized. He set the stack on an empty space on the counter, and turned to the barmaid who had followed him in, "What's going on around here? I've been gone for quite some time, but I've never seen this many gnomes in Rockdrift!"

Now able to take a better look at her you see she's a half-elf. Her sandy brown hair reaches down towards her waist and is perfectly straight, catches the light rather nicely to reveal shades of red and even gold too. Her face turns from thankful to rather annoyed at seeing the dirt on your hands, she quickly takes the plates you laid down to the sink. As you see her face calculating her response, sadness creeps into her expression.

"I'm sorry to inform you, but Candleton is no more. The story of exactly what happened is a mystery to me, to be honest. Some say it was brought to the ground by the wrath of a storm giant, some say orcs sacked it, others say the Diabolist herself came and brought hell fire down upon all those poor gnomes. It's tragic, no matter what the actual occurrence. All these little folk now have no place to go, and to be true, I don't think that Rockdrift is wealthy enough to support such a large increase in population in such a short time. The people here will grow impatient and cruel in swifter time than I would like, humans are too vain for compassion toward any but their own. The past two months have worn the townsfolk down and they grow bitter. If you don't mind me asking, where are you coming from? If you've been gone for so long, then it must have been on business that holds at least minor importance."

Her expression is smooth as stone as she washes the plates, asking you shamelessly of your tidings. You hear the rabble increase from the common room.

His eyes turning side to side with the movements in the tavern crowd, Binleeargo munches on a human biscuit (human made not made of humans he thinks to himself with twinkling eyes). He notes the displeased looks from some of the humans at the gnomish tavern-goers, and more than once, a gnome is bumped with hardly a 'didn't see ya'. Still, the people of Rockdrift have made theirs homes and stores available, and the Candleton gnomes are lucky to have such neighbors.

He hisses a laugh at Geron's sudden innuendo, trying not to spray biscuits into his drink. The mirth of the guards of Rockdrift is most welcome. Binlee had always mistaken the reticence of the human priests as being a racial flaw, and most welcomed the outrageous lengths that regular humans seemed to go for a joke.

Among the mob, he sees several unfamiliar gnomes. This both pleases and worries him. His eyes twinkle a bit more as he thinks maybe these human biscuits are turning me into one of them - I'm certainly worrying more than I used to.

There is a bit of a spring in Tanser's step this morning as he makes his way to the Tavern he agreed to meet the "Client" to hand over the statue.

"10 gold'll go a long way" He thinks to himself as he trudges along the street to the tavern

"I'll get my money then get some breakfast."

He thought to arrive early to case the joint but someone is already sitting in the booth he was supposed to go to...a cloaked and hooded someone.

Tanser shakes his head "Always with these damned hooded cloaks." He makes his way through the already crowded tavern, plops down across from the individual and looks to call over a server to place his breakfast order. Maybe try one of these 'human biscuits' he's heard of...Oh and get a refill on his flask..."Hmph, I don't remember finishing that last night."

Edward's screams jar Apró from his slumber. "Wouldn't be morning without one of Ed's fits." he mumbles to himself as he slides out of bed to check on the little one. Lumbering down the hall Apró shakes his head as he ponders his current situation, "The Ramsals have been very good to me but asking me to look after this one may just be more than I can handle. He is a cute little feller though."

Ed's eyes widen and a slight smile works its way onto his face as he sees Apró enter the nursery. But only for an instance as he quickly reverts back to his usual morning routine of screaming and crying. "Morning little guy", Apró says as he approaches the crib. "So what will it be this morning, Edward? Perhaps 'the usual'?" and with a snap of Apró's fingers a dancing yellow orb appears just out of Ed's reach. Satisfied that his little trick will keep the young Ramsal occupied for a while Apró turns to return to his room to find Isabella standing in the doorway.

"Good Morning, Apró. I take 'the usual' was called for once again?"

"Good Morning, Ma'am. Yes, Ma'am, it seems to be the only thing that will keep him calm in the morning anymore."

"I am starting to worry about my little Eddie. These episodes seem to be getting worse, don't you think?"

"Yes, Ma'am, I do. My tricks aren't holding him over as long as they used to, but I'm obviously not an expert on human children. Perhaps a trip to the healer might be in order?"

"Yes, as much as I hate dealing with that man, I think you're correct. I'll have Juliska set something up right away." As she's about to exit the room she quickly turns back to Apró, "Thank you once again for taking on the extra task of looking after Edward. With Mora's departure we needed someone that we could trust to fill her role. We'll find a permanent replacement as soon as we can."

"Not a problem, Ma'am. The little guy is starting to grow on me."

As Apró heads back to his room to clean up and prepare for his day the thought of having breakfast down at the tavern enters his mind. "I think I'll try some of those human biscuits this time around..."

Bog slumped against the counter in shock, "Candleton is gone?" Most of what she then said was heard through numb ears, but he gathered himself as best as he could before replying, "You're right. Rockdrift isn't enough for both the gnomes and humans. But perhaps if everyone had something to do other than just sitting around....Do you know of anyone who might have a better idea of what happened?"

"And to answer your question, my absence was of minor importance to many, and more than minor to some....I left Candleton several years ago much younger and more foolish. I sought adventure and riches and found something much more valuable instead." A wistful expression swept over his face, "I had heard rumor that a relative of the Elf Queen had disappeared, and she was offering a reward for whoever could find out what happened. To make a very long story brief, I found Elana, who as you probably know is, er was, the Queen's niece, and we returned to Queen's Wood. Elana took a fancy to me, and I've been there ever since. At least, until her passing."

He took a deep breath and looked around the cluttered kitchen. "May I be of any assistance?"

The hooded figure is wordless as you sit and order your meal and drink. You sit in a bit of an awkward silence for what seems like an eternity until the hooded figure pulls out a rolled piece of parchment held with a black piece of ribbon and a red wax seal. As the parchment slides out of the long sleeve of his cloak, you see the hand is red and has something akin to claws. Seeing this strikes you with a bit of fear, but you've learned very well to not show it.

Binleeargo

The gnomes you see are ragged, you're guessing they've been on the road for a while. Then you see it, they bear the mark, they're one of you. It's apparent that they lost their way after the disaster or simply didn't travel to Rockdrift often enough to find it. You feel something akin to pity for them, remembering what it was like when you first came to the town. Geron's boisterous laughter brings you back into the mood of the tavern. The other guards at the table laughing with him, you see that he had smeared some butter in the beard of the guard sitting across the table from him, looking rather displeased. The scene makes you chuckle but something in your stomach makes it a little less pleasing than it would have been when the unhappy guard stands and walks out the door. If you would like to scan the room and pick out Tanser and the shady character in the corner, please roll a perception check (Wis+lvl).

Bog

The half-elf bar maid winces when you mention the passing of Elana, even for a half-elf it had a large impact among the elves as a race. Except those damned drow, you would wear they had a spider in their chests instead of a heart. The maid's thoughts visibly come back to the present as she looks around the kitchen. She says, "No, that won't be necessary," again looking at your dirty hands, "I should get back to serving and I can't have you in the kitchen, please proceed." She motions towards the door with an elf-like grace. Pushing through the door, you see that a guard is laughing hysterically, thus being the more boisterous behavior. It's not immediately apparent why but you do feel some slight tension in the room. The half-elf scans the room quickly and says, "Ah! another gnome from Candleton is here, perhaps you would like to meet him?" She motions towards a table where a little gnome is sitting looking around patiently with a white cat sitting under his chair. She starts walking over before you respond, do you follow? You can also looks for Tanser if you'd like.

Apró

The town is alive as you make your way to the usual place, The Savoring Stone Giant. Easily the best place in town, the bread is perfect, the ale is thick and the severs are more than personable. As you reach for the door, it bursts open and knocks into you as Willam walks out, looking rather angry. No big surprise there though, he's always angry because of Geron's little jests. He's always telling Willam to "lighten up", though you're not entirely sure if that'll ever happen. You take your seat and await to be served. It's oddly long before Lyanna, the half-elf bar maid comes to take care of you. The same roll goes for you in regards to Tanser.

Binleeargo watches the unhappy guard leave with some mirth, but he doesn't really understand why the guard is unhappy. It was a crude but funny joke, and his beard wasn't anywhere near as magnificent as Binlee's. He strokes his beard, chest puffed slightly, and pride shining on his face.

Turning to the new faces in the crowed, he mutters aloud "These lost gnomes should be welcomed, but that's not my job, is it?" Maybe they know of others out there, have heard stories. "No rest for the unbuttered!" he exclaims and claps Geron on the shoulder, smiling broadly at the other guards. He begins to seek out the ragged gnomes, ostensibly making sure that they go to the gnomish Elder Council to seek lodging, and sparing some of his dwindling coin for biscuits for the hungriest of them. He asks if they have any missing family or friends, or know of any others out there that may not have made their way home yet. He leaves them with the thought that if the Elder Council doesn't know where they are, to let Binleeargo Jemop know. Finding lost gnomes is his self-appointed job.

The gnomes look a little scared at your approach. Your swagger puts them a little on guard. "We simply seek lodging for the night and a meal until we carry on our journey. We head for Axis and we recommend you do the same. More is at hand than what it seems, and the Emperor must know. I give you my thanks for the coin, friend." The last sentence sounds a touch less than genuine. You have the intuition that they're simply wary due to some horrible experience they had on the road and don't take it to heart. Your focus shifts when you see behind the gnome you are speaking to. You see anther gnome huddled in the table corner with a less than ideal looking character. Outstretched is his arm toward the gnome with a roll of parchment, you see all the details previously mentioned all too well, your stomach turns at the sight. Something is not right here.
May 17, 2015 4:24 pm
Binleeargo will wish the gnomes well on their journey. "We are overcrowding Rockdrift, and if we can find a more suitable home, then, well, our futures would be brighter. Send word to us if you find a solution, and perhaps we will send the Elder Council to beseech the Emperor." He puzzles over the words "more is at hand than what it seems" but is distracted by the clawed hand. "Travel well, my friends," he says warmly, and then heads over to the cornered gnome.
May 17, 2015 4:53 pm
As Apró sits and awaits service he stretches and rubs his shoulder a bit trying to take the sting out from where the door greeted him on the way in. "When will that Willam learn to not let Geron get to him like that. Not only is it bad for his health, it's starting to get bad for mine." Scanning the room to see where all of the servers might have gone he blindly reaches into his pouch and retrieves a treat for Macska who immediately pounces onto his lap and gingerly snaps it from his hand. "That's my girl. Keep a watch on the entrance for me and let me know if someone out of place shows up, would you?" Macska purrs and returns to her position under the chair. "Not like them to keep me waiting like this, must be a particularly busy morning for them."

Finally he see Lyanna approaching and with a big smile and a wave greets her, "Morning, Lyanna! Good to see you."

Bog stayed close to Lyanna as she moved toward the gnome with the white cat. Even in her wake he had to nimbly dodge the 'giants' as they failed to notice him. He watched their faces and saw that while a few genuinely didn't see him, there were others who were well aware of his presence as they tried walking over him. The subtle hostility jarred him more than anything else.

Once they arrived, he pulled out the chair opposite the gnome and introduced himself, "I hope this fair morning finds you well. You look familiar to me, but the years away from Candleton have blurred my memory. I am Bog Dythure. May I join you? I would be willing to pay for your meal in exchange for some friendly company and some answers, for I just learned of Candleton's destruction, and it leaves me quite confused and distressed!"
May 18, 2015 1:30 am
Motioning for Bog to join him, Apró lowers his gaze as he slowly shakes his head. "I'm sorry that you've just learned of our town's destruction. It was... it was just an awful night." He pauses as he tries to regain his composure and then continues, "During the destruction and panic of that night I was unable to locate any of my friends. As I searched it did appear that at least a few were able to gather some of their belongings and flee. Others weren't so lucky..."

He goes silent as the reliving of that night takes its toll.

After a few awkward moments, Apró looks up at Bog and tries to change the tone of the conversation, "Apologies, friend, I've yet to properly introduce myself." Extending his hand towards Bog he says, "My name is Apró Bot. It would be an honor to share a meal with you."

"So... umm ... are you ok? It seems your hands look different from the first time we met....uh, also, is my gold in that parchment as well?" I look at the wax seal to see if there are any impressions.
May 18, 2015 10:21 am
Tanser

The wax seal has a symbol that you are not familiar with. You hear heavy footsteps in your direction, you look instinctively and see a gnome with an oddly fantastic beard walking toward you. When you look back to your "customer," it is gone. The roll of parchment is on the table in front of you next to the statue.

Binleeargo
You start advancing, though it's not easy. Just when you think you're in earshot, someone walks in front of you bumping you back a step or so and when they pass, the figure is gone and just the gnome is left at his table.
May 18, 2015 2:50 pm
Tanser blinks a few times, rubs his eyes and scans the room quickly. My eyes are drawn immediately to the oddly fantastic beard of the Gnome approaching. After a flare up of jealousy and slight contempt over how amazing the beard looks, Tanser quickly grabs the statue and parchment and tries to hide them under the table thinking, 'Bollocks. I'll get paid one way or another. Maybe this parchment holds some value.'

I'll roll a Dex+lvl to try and hide the items. Never tried this before so I hope it works. If I may add my "I must have that valuable thing" background just add 5 to the roll. I won't include in case it doesn't apply.

Bog watched Apró struggle through the memories of that night and a spark flared to life within him. As he shook Apró's hand and ordered food, his thoughts and emotions whirled into a fevered storm. It was his town, his people, his family that had suffered and been destroyed. He would not return home just to stand idly by and let this heinous crime go unanswered. In a lull of the conversation, he leaned forward, his eyes taking on a dangerous gleam, "Tell me, Apró, who did this? Who destroyed Candleton? I have been here hardly a day and I'm hearing rumors of orcs, storm giants, and the Diabolist! Tell me what really happened, and I will see justice dealt!"

"I do not know what exactly happened that night. I do, however, know that the rumors that you have heard are wrong." Apró pauses for a moment as he takes a few sips from his drink.

"Some call it a natural disaster, but from what I saw there wasn't anything natural about it. This was done TO US, by someone or something and no one seems to care. I lost friends in Candleton and yet I've settled here and haven't done a single thing to right the wrongs done to OUR people." Apró lowers his head, "I'm ashamed of myself for that."

There may be little left, but hopefully some trace remains of whoever or whatever did this." He looked back at Apró, "Do you know of anyone else who might join us? Stalwart though the two of us may be, I would feel better if our number were greater."

Blinking his eyes at the disappearing fiend mirage, Binleeargo continues nonchalantly to the gnomes table as if he had meant to do that anyway. Gnomish magic, no doubt, huzzah! He smiles warmly at the seated gnome, and proffers his arm in greeting. "Binleeargo Jemop, finder of lost gnomes. Well met, cousin!" he says, amiably before taking a seat.
May 27, 2015 2:54 am
Tanser glances at the proffered arm then looks back up at dat beautiful beard. He shifts his unpacked pipe in his mouth and shakes the proffered arm cautiously.

"Tanser Podane. 'Finder of lost gnomes', you say? You lookin for me, Binny? Am I lost?"

Tanser leans forward in his seat and thinks, 'Well, looks like my gold's out the door. Let's see what this fellow has to offer......I don't remember a cousin-a-mine looking like this, though. Gotta get me some more Burberry.'

"Yes, perhaps there are others who would rally, if given the opportunity." Bog straightened in his chair and looked around the room. He was surprised to see the number of gnomes present, yet dismayed at how comfortable they all appeared to be. Had they forgotten their home had been destroyed? The righteous rage within him could not be contained and he clambered to step from his chair to the table. With as booming of a voice as he could muster, he called attention to himself and addressed everyone,

"My fellow brothers and sisters. I have been gone far too long, for I return to find our town destroyed, our people uprooted, and our families slain. Yet you go about your days eating food and drinking drink that is not yours! In a town that is not yours! You sleep in someone else's beds, and bathe in someone else's bath! Some of you are even rebuilding your businesses here. Here! When you should be rebuilding your home, your town! I will not stand for this defilement of our people, our name. I am going back to Candleton today, nay, this very hour! I will find whomever or whatever did this, and mete out Justice! For this crime against us was unjust and must be answered! Who will join me? Who will reclaim that which was stolen: our honor, our dignity, our livelihood? Who will cause those of future generations to quake at the thought of ever rising against us again?!??"

Tanser sees this display. Takes a look around the room and thinks...

'Interesting....Let's see where THIS goes.'

He then shouts out.."I'm with ya!" then glances back at Binleeargo.
Jun 11, 2015 2:16 am
Binleeargo stands and hollers his acceptance of the proposal. Gnomish magic illuminates the ceiling with illusory candles.

EDIT: I guess that would be the strong smell of candles rather than visual illusions (gnomish racial power).

Bog, roll a charisma check to dictate how the rest of the room reacts (CHA+level).

Besides the gnomes who have clearly posed interest in your crusade, the other gnomes seem frightened at the thought of returning to Candleton. The humans are lost in left field.
Jun 18, 2015 2:42 am
Silence hung in the air after Bog's speech for a moment or two until it became awkward and everyone went back to their food, drinks, and conversation. Bog stepped down, disappointed at his people's lack of interest. He looked at the three who were willing to join him, "It is a pity the others are more interested in staying here in the supposed safety than in reclaiming that which is theirs. Let us gather our supplies and meet at the road as soon as possible. I would like to make it to Candleton before nightfall."

He stared at his feet for a moment, then looked up again, tears glistening in his eyes, "I can't tell you how grateful and honored I am to have you join me. Thank you." He wiped his face with his hands, leaving dirty streaks across his cheeks.
Jun 18, 2015 12:36 pm
Tanser thinks to himself, 'This Bog sure has a flair for the dramatic. Those tears look real! The dirty streaks were a nice touch too. I could probably learn something from him.'

Then says, "I'll be right along. I gotta gather some stuff." Turns and slaps Binleeargo on the back, "I'll see ya in a few."

Tanser slips out the door and, if he can, gets to a place of relative privacy and OPENS THE PARCHMENT!!!!
Jun 19, 2015 2:44 pm
Hearing Tanser mention his need to gather some items before leaving Apró speaks up. "I must make my way back to the Ramsal Estate before leaving, it shouldn't take more than an hour to grab some supplies and say my goodbyes. Shall we meet back here in an hour?"
Jun 19, 2015 5:26 pm
"An hour is agreeable."

Bog went back up to his room where he put on his armor and gathered his meager belongings. He made his way to the road that led from Rockdrift to Candleton and waited for the others.
Jun 19, 2015 6:04 pm
Binleeargo is stunned at the turn of events. He smiles broadly to himself and twirls his moustache. I been living human style far too long! "Awww, gnomes, got to love us," he exclaims loudly to the crowd. "We love you humans dearly, but by the gods you can argue long before a decision. Us gnomes? We're whimsical, haha." He springs toward the door and then spins around and calls out "we'll be back if we survive!"

He then positively skips to his bunk and grabs his gear, then chases after Bog to the road home.
Jun 20, 2015 2:26 am
Apró is surprised to find that neither Edward or Isabella are at the Ramsal estate when he arrives. "It's not like them to go out this time of day, especially with me tagging along to help control Edward. Isabella must have taken my advice and gone to the healer. It's a shame I won't be able to say a proper goodbye..."

Gathering his belonging from his room, Apró gives one last look around the place he has called home for the past few months. Before leaving he takes a few minutes to write a note to the family that was nice enough to take him in during the lowest point of his life. "They are good people, I'm going to miss them."

Apró, as you turn in the room where your belongings are, Edward Senior, Isabella's husband, is standing in the door.

"I knew you were goong to try to leave someday. I can't allow this, you have become a much important asset to my family."

He shows no signs of moving out of your path
Jun 20, 2015 1:47 pm
Apró stands as tall as possible, staff in his right hand, the lower end of which is resting on the ground, "Mr. Ramsal, with all due respect, I must return to Candleton. I have to know what evil caused the destruction of my town and I must avenge those that have fallen! You're family has been most gracious to me, more so than I would have ever imagined, but we all knew that this was to be a temporary arrangement and now I must go."

As he's pleading his case with Edward the Senior, Apró gives Macska the signal to scout ahead into his room.

OOC: From what I've read, I won't have full control over my familiar, but Apró will give the signal to Macska and hope for the best.
Jun 20, 2015 2:21 pm
What would you have your familiar looking for?

"You forget your place, little gnome. You are property of the Dragon Empire now, and soon we depart for Axis. The Emperor will make good use of you in the war, would you turb away from honor and duty?" Edwar Senior has a look of agitation on his face while saying this.
Jun 20, 2015 2:50 pm
"What's gotten into him!?" Apró thinks as he tightens his grip on his staff.

"I am the property of no empire, Sir, and my duty is to the people of Candleton and my fellow gnomes. I'm going to ask, with the utmost respect, Sir, that you please step aside and let me gather my belongings."

OOC: Macska is simply checking to see if there is anyone in my room.
Jun 21, 2015 5:35 pm
How does your familiar communicate with you? Can it actually speak? Is it telepathic? Or do you basically just feel/understand what it's trying to tell you?

Silence hangs in the air after you make your statement for what feels like an eternity. Edward Senior steps aside and says, "Your decision will wreak havoc among your people. That's a promise. A sleight such as this against the Empire is not to be taken lightly."
Jun 21, 2015 6:05 pm
"There's not many of my people left on which to wreak havoc", Apró mumbles as he walks past Edward and into his room.

OOC: Once there he will gather his belongings and then quickly return to the designated meeting place. Apró and Macska communicate through simple facial expressions and behaviors. Apró can wave his hand forward as a sign to scout ahead and based on Macska body language when he returns Apró will know if something unexpected is waiting for him.

Binlee is with Bog. His twin hammers twirl in amusement and genuine glee. Looking east he tries to imagine what they might find,l. While he knows that the terror of that night was real, his gnomish heart can not hold onto such heavy feelings for long.
Jun 24, 2015 3:41 am
Tanser "handles some shit" then joins the others as well...

He seems preoccupied. In his own head at the moment. Not immediately acknowledging the others, but joins them nonetheless. He starts fumbling with his pipe, lights and starts puffing away staring off into the distance.
Jun 24, 2015 11:18 am
And so the little clan headed off into the wilderness. The morning was crisp and cool, typical of the early spring in this region, trees swaying in the song of the breeze. Some of you may feel dread at returning to your wrecked town, others may be feeling excited and heroic.

Mechanical travel: Here w'ell enter what we call a montage, where we go in a cyclical sort of motion where one player describes a problem but not the solution. The next in the order explains the how the solution was obtained. This is a creative way of passing in-game time and shouldn't be limited to skills/stats. However, if a player chooses to be a little loose with creation, I may require a skill check to make this interesting. The order will be Bog, Apró, Binleeargo then Tanser
Jun 25, 2015 2:13 am
All in all, Bog thought they were making good time. They were walking at a brisk enough pace, and he was enjoying the chance to simply breathe in the fresh air and bask in the memories the familiar smells were bringing back. He was snapped from his revere when the path took a turn he didn't remember and they entered a valley that was new to him. Glancing upward, the sun had jumped places in the sky, and the rumbling beneath his feet only added to the confused panic that was setting in. Looking down the valley, his jaw dropped at the sight of a herd of Koru behemoths stampeding toward them!
Jun 25, 2015 10:19 am
http://www.pelgranepress.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/TarrasqueVKoru_ThumbA.jpg Apró you better come up with a good plan because these things are massive. This is in relation to a Tarrasque... and yes, that is only its foot.
Jun 25, 2015 8:52 pm
Being a gnome Apró was used to feeling small but this was taking things to a whole new level! It took a quick nip from his trusty familiar to break him from his stunned silence and react to stampeding beasts. "Run!!' was all he could get out before he realized the others had beat him to the punch and were already making their way through the undergrowth of the wilderness.

After running for about 100 yards, Apró spotted what appears to be a cave entrance down in a small ravine, and with the Koru outpacing that party he made a suggestion that no one really wanted to hear. "In here!!" he yelled as he directed the others into the cave entrance. "If we can get down deep enough, perhaps we won't end up as residue on their feet."

Casting Dancing Lights to help illuminate their descent into the caverns it quickly become clear that not only were the passing Korus knocking loose dirt and rocks from the caverns ceilings onto the party, but their path back has been blocked! As everyone waited for the worst to pass Apró spoke up, "Alive and trapped is better than being flat and dead. Any ideas on how to get out of here?"

After waiting out the stampede in the cave, eventually the gnomes form a hilariously wobbly gnome ladder and make their way to the surface. They peak out and find the ground chewed up from the mighty beasts passage.

They continue east and make camp that night. They lay some traps for some small game for breakfast, and tuck into their foodstores. While playing a gnomish fireside game of riddles, they suddenly realize that all of the insects and night birds have gone silent. They stand nervously and look out into the woods beyond the ring of firelight, and see a pair of eyes shining redly back at them!

Binleeargo, your senses are as sharp as you have trusted them to be and get to take the first turn. Just before you act, a second pair of red eyes blink open from the darkness of the surrounding forest. The enemies are considered nearby but are shrouded in darkness, therefore you're going to take a -2 attack penalty until they come close enough to the campfire.

The order is as follows:
Binleeargo
Enemies
Bog
Apró

Note: Bog, I noticed you added strength instead of dexterity to your initiative, so you're only one point lower.

Rolls

Secret Roll

Jul 1, 2015 6:41 pm
Binleeargo dives onto his bedroll and grabbing his hammers, rolls into a combat crouch. If he can, he readies an action to attack the creatures should they be so inclined as to attempt to make his acquaintance in a less than friendly manner (i.e., get near him uncautiously).
OOC: I couldn't find rules for drawing a weapon so I included them in his move action, but if they are an additional move action, then disregard my rolls, of course.

Rolls

Hammer #1, readied action - (1d20+2)

(10) + 2 = 12

Hammer #2, readied action (only if 1st hammer rolls even) - (1d20+2)

(8) + 2 = 10

Yes, Bog is immune to Fear, and also gets a +2 attack bonus to creatures with the Fear ability who are unengaged. Thanks for the prompt answer! :)

The creatures step forth from the darkness, at this point it becomes apparent that they're dire rats. Binleeargo, since you retreated a little, you are the furthest away from them but still nearby, you are next to the now more alerylt Tanser. Bog and Apró, you are closest to them, and thus they move up to engage you.

Attack on Apró

Jul 2, 2015 10:21 am
Bog, your attakcer's teeth scratch and clatter against your armor, but you suffer no damage.
Apró, your attacker is fortunate because you have less armor. You take 12 damage and 2 ongoing

Bog, it is now your turn and you are engaged with a Dire Rat.
Jul 2, 2015 4:31 pm
OOC: Took my 12 points. If I'm reading correctly I'll take two more at the end of my turn and then try and save (11+) to discontinue the effect. Correct?
Jul 2, 2015 5:06 pm
You are correct, my friend.
Jul 2, 2015 7:05 pm
Binleeargo shuffles to Apro Bot's side, and tries to draw the rats attention. He whistles and then attacks with his hammers in downward strikes.

Rolls

Hammer #1 (if even roll, 2nd attack allowed) - (1d20+2)

(7) + 2 = 9

Hammer #2 (only if hammer #1 rolls even) - (1d20+2)

(17) + 2 = 19

Bog twisted away from the unusually-sized rodent, preventing its teeth from finding purchase and using the momentum to unsheath his scimitar. Baring his own teeth at the creature, he met its slobbering stare and found himself filling up with a holy fury at the unnaturalness of the foul beast. Fearlessly, he dove at the creature, slashing at it wildly.

OOC: I'm using my Smite Evil attack
+4 attack bonus from Smite Evil
+1 melee attack bonus as long as it isn't engaged by any of my allies (Fearless Talent)
+1d12 damage (half damage on miss)

Rolls

Attack Dire Rat (d20+Str+lvl+ED+5) - (1d20+10)

(1) + 4 = 5

Smite Evil Damage (d12) (half damage on miss) - (1d12)

(4) = 4

Shaken from the attack, Apró stumbles back a bit before raising his hand and unleashing a scorching ray attack on the dire rat the hit him.

OOC: I'll take two more points of damage and roll for the save as well.

Rolls

Scorching Ray [+Cha+Lvl = +5] - (1d20+5)

(4) + 5 = 9

Damage (if hit) [+Cha = +4] - (1d6+4)

(4) + 4 = 8

Ongoing Fire Damage (if attack roll is even) - (1d8)

(2) = 2

Ongoing Damage Save - (1d20)

(10) = 10

Jul 3, 2015 3:18 am
Tanser gets a twisted look on his face and attempts to Shadow Walk behind one of the Dire Rats engaged with Apro.

Shadow Walk:
CHA + Lvl vs. Enemy with the highest mental defense... On a hit I disappear and on my following turn reappear and do double damage to the Rat engaged with Apro, if I can get there. I don't see anything specifically saying I couldn't use my improved sneak attack damage as the Rat would be engaged with Apro.

On a miss I still get a standard, so I will use Flying Blade and hurl a throwing dagger at the nearest Rat. I'll throw that roll in too in case my shadow walk misses. Dex+Lvl vs. AC

Rolls

Shadow Walk. Cha+Lvl vs. enemy w/ highest mental. - (1d20+4)

(16) + 4 = 20

Flying Blade if Shadow Walk misses. Dex+Lvl vs. AC - (1d20+5)

(20) + 5 = 25

Flying Blade Damage if Shadow Walk misses and Flying Blade hits. - (1d4+4)

(2) + 4 = 6

Jul 4, 2015 8:47 pm
Binleeargo, your first swing is a little wide and hits the ground with a thump (unless you do miss damage, then it grazes the Dire Rat) but your second attack hits the enemyas it screeches in pain.
Bog, your attack is fruitful as you shave off some skin and hair skillfuly with your scimitar for full damage.
Apró, scorching ray is a ranged spell so you suffer a -2 penalty unless you would like to disengage first (move action, roll normal save 11+), just let me know your decision.
Tanser, your shadow step is successful. You disappear in a puff of smoke to reappear on your next turn.
The escalation die is at 1 (+1 to attack rolls but not damage) and we're back at the top of initiative.

Tanser, you reappear behind the wererat that Apro and Binleeargo are dealing with and take a good swipe at it with your dagger but it misses.

The wererat, now cornered by Apro, Binleeargo and Tanser, lashes out in a panic. Tanser appearing out of nowhere startles it more than anything and it bites at you and hits for 14 points of damage and 2 ongoing, save ends.

The wererat on Bog continues its attempt to bypass his armor without much success. Both of the wererats make a high pitched shriek that makes you grab your ears. Bog and Apro, you are the closest ones to your rats at the moment so you guys are effected the worst, you both take 4 damage from the attack.

Bog furious slashes kept the dire rat at bay, but he was forced to pull back and cringe at the terrifying shriek that emanated from the creatures. Small though his body was, he felt himself blocking some of the sound from reaching the others. You still have a move action and can disengage if you'd like, it's just a normal save (11+). If you roll and fail, you can still move away but suffer an opportunity attack. If you succeed, you can move away. However, this is entirely up to you.

Tanser, you're up!
Jul 26, 2015 10:55 pm
OOC: Thanks, keep forgetting I can do that.
After making his Burning Hands attempt, Apró tries to limp far enough away to avoid getting chewed on...

Rolls

Disengage - (1d20)

(19) = 19

Jul 27, 2015 12:06 am
OOC: 14 takes me down to 1 HP the 2 on going takes me to -1. I'M DOWN!

Tanser receives a nasty bite and collapses to the ground in a heap.

Rolls

Save against 2pts Ongoing damage from Wererat bite. - (1d20)

(5) = 5

Jul 27, 2015 1:53 am
Just so we know, you take your ongoing damage at the END of your turn, right before you try to save against it. That's what's so nice about this system, you get to go down in a flaming blaze of heroic glory!!
Jul 30, 2015 2:37 am
OOC: Ah, yes, I did the save before the damage. Here's my appended turn...

Apró manages to back away from the giant rat before once again collapsing to the ground.
Aug 7, 2015 1:49 pm
OOC: Who's turn is it?
Aug 8, 2015 4:02 pm
OOC: I believe Binleeargo is up.
Aug 8, 2015 4:39 pm
Binleeargo, seeing Tanser go down, incants a quick prayer for Tanser, while redoubling his efforts on the wererat.
Tanser, the Heal spell, cast as a quick action, allows you to spend a recovery.

edit: for damage

Rolls

Hammer #1 - (1d20+4)

(9) + 4 = 13

hammer damage, if that hit - (1d6+2)

(1) + 2 = 3

Aug 17, 2015 10:14 pm
Binleeargo, your swing is a little wide. The rat retaliates with a shriek of fury but you deftly dodge out of the way.
Bog, you and your challenger circle for a second before the wererat lashes out at you but it only scratches at your armor in a futile sort of way that gives you a primal satisfaction.

Sorry for the delay guys, life and stuff. also, if things still go south in this fight, I may have been a little tough for your first encounter. Don't be afraid to try some unconventional means of resolving this.

OOC: Is the escalation die at +3?

Bog and the rat danced in a tight circle, each slashing at the other, the rat with its claws, and Bog with his scimitar. Sensing an opening, he cut in quickly, feeling satisfied as the blade cut through flesh.

OOC: I should have added another +1 to my attack due to my Fearless talent, resulting in a roll of 20

Rolls

Scimitar vs AC (d20+5+3) - (1d20+8)

(11) + 8 = 19

Damage (d6+4) (1 damage on miss) - (1d6+4)

(1) + 4 = 5

Bog, you draw blood while swiping at the wererat. Apró is up!
Sep 2, 2015 2:49 pm
Visions of home and family fill Apró's head as he lays unconscious on the ground. "Must. Fight."

Apró slowly opens his eyes, just to see that the battle is still engaged. He lies motionless on the ground, waiting for a chance to join battle once again. "Macska, stay safe, my friend."

EDIT: Adding a recovery roll (Does this count against the maximum number of recoveries he can take?)

Rolls

Death Save - (1d20)

(18) = 18

Recovery - (1d6+1)

(5) + 1 = 6

Sep 2, 2015 3:32 pm
Yes, when you recover from death, you expend one of your recoveries. Now we're up on Tanser!
Sep 4, 2015 12:56 am
Tanser rises from the Heal Spell.

"Aw dang, Thanks Binny!"

...

Well that's perfect.

"Shit! Well....Thanks anyway!....aaaaachch" Tanser feels the healing well up inside him, but his weak ass body reminds him that it'll take more than that to raise him up.

Rolling a 1 with a -1 Con drops Tanser down to 0 HP.... I'd like to think his face lands in a perfectly placed pile of Wererat shit to add insult to injury. I think that fits.

...that really just happened! Holy crap, I have never seen a recovery actually HURT someone before hahaha!

Escalation die is at 4 and Binleeargo is up.
Sep 4, 2015 1:19 pm
Binleeargo, concerned about how gravely wounded Tanser must be, directs his last healing on Tanser, while trying to score a hit on the rat with one of his hammers.
Another recovery till for Tanser.

First hammer - (1d20+6)

(9) + 6 = 15

Hammer 1 damage - (1d6+2)

Binleeargo, both of your hammers find their wits and crash into the target one after another, each bringing forth a screech of pain. The wererats snarl as they come forth again for another strike.

The wererat on Binleeargo, you get bitten by the rat as a response to your hits. 2 damage, 2 ongoing. Regular save ends.
Bog, the rat has watched your movements and has found a gap in your armor, critically hitting you in a weak spot! 4 damage, 4 ongoing for the first round, it gets reduced to 2 after the first time you take it. Regular save ends.

Bog, you're up. What is your blades response to this insult?!

Rolls

Attack on Binleeargo

Attack on Bog

Sep 13, 2015 4:50 pm
Bog winced as the rat's jaw found purchase in his shoulder. He felt a numbness begin to spread down his arm as he threw the beast from him. His eyes widened and his jaw dropped as he pointed into the shadows and stammered, 'Naa..nnnaaa...Naga!!!"

OOC: I'm invoking my racial ability (Minor Illusion) to create the strong smell of a Naga in the hopes it will scare off the rats.

Save against ongoing damage - (1d20)

(3) = 3

Sep 18, 2015 11:56 pm
Recovered from his near death experience, but still lying prone, he sees two the rats engaged with others. He quickly gets to his feet and raises his hands into the air calling on his sorcerer's power to gather power for his upcoming attack.

OOC: He's taking the Gather Power ability to unleash a double strength spell next time around. If nothing else all of the commotion from the gathering may distract the were rats a bit.
Sep 19, 2015 10:28 am
The wererats perk up at Bog's cry of terror. They look around frantically, noses twitching. Letting out a screech of fear, they shoft back into rat form and go scampering off into the brush. Is anyone going to persue them to keep fighting?

Good jov on that one, Bog. I was starting to get worried you guys were going to lose the fight! Perhaps my scale was a little off for the combat.

Rolls

rat on Bog save against illusion - (1d20)

(5) = 5

rat on Binleeargo save against illusion - (1d20)

(5) = 5

Sep 20, 2015 6:01 pm
if nobody is going to persue, the party manages to find an uneasy rest with what is left of the night. When you awake, the air is crisp and cool, the sun warm on your cheeks for another day of travel and to your pleasure, you now feel like you are surrounded by friends.

This is going to count for a quick rest, so you can spend recoveries and gain any once per battle powers back. I would say, because technically you have slept, daily abilities can replenish as well, however, recovery count will not.
Sep 20, 2015 7:04 pm
OOC: Apró will make three recovery rolls.

EDIT: Wow, that could not have worked any better! (Just what I needed to get back to maximum)

Rolls

Three Recovery Rolls - (1d6+1, 1d6+1, 1d6+1)

1d6+1 : (3) + 1 = 4

1d6+1 : (6) + 1 = 7

1d6+1 : (3) + 1 = 4

Sep 22, 2015 5:07 am
Tanser takes two recoveries after the Healing spell recovery from Binny. (3 total)

"Guys, I... guy's I don't feel good." He vomits a little, then takes a swig from his flask... "That's a little better. What in the Abyss happened? I remember big ass rats then darkness... followed by more darkness."

Rolls

Recovery from Binny's Heal Spell - (1d8-1)

(2) - 1 = 1

Recovery from rest - (1d8-1)

(1) - 1 = 0

Recovery from rest - (1d8-1)

(6) - 1 = 5

"Binny" smiles toothily at Tanser and strokes his magnificent moustaches. "I think we camped on an anthill under a wasps nest, if you take my meaning."
Edit: I think I need to save against ongoing damage and then a recovery roll.

Rolls

Save against ongoing damage - (1d20)

(16) = 16

Recovery - (1d8+2)

(2) + 2 = 4

Sep 24, 2015 10:11 am
Nope! You guys are out of combat and I don't want to torture you too bad lol. There isn't much story reason to make the ongoing stick around it is forgiven.
Oct 5, 2015 1:06 am
Tanser smiles back at Binleeargo... PRETENDING to get his meaning.

"I knew I'd like you from the moment you sat at my table...at first it was just because of those BRILLIANT Moustaches!"

He throws him a friendly elbow as he proceeds out onto the road.

"Shall we be off then? I'll take the lead if you don't mind. I'm feeling sprightly this morning!"

Tanser immediately proceeds in the wrong direction. He'll continue on until someone points out that he's going the wrong way then corrects himself for a time. It becomes clear that his memory leaves much to be desired and at some point someone has to take over the lead. Probably sooner rather than later this happens as it's pretty ridiculous.

At some point the party is coming down a hill into what would be the last stretch of flatland before reaching their destination when the earth begins to shake. Not subtle at all as everyone's balance is tested. It doesn't take long before the reason for this earthquake reveals itself as a Living Dungeon erupting from the field in front of them. The immense stone structure continues for what feels like 10's of minutes until slowly coming to a stop. Completely blocking the way is a mountainous peak of jagged blackened stone. Large chunks begin to break off and fall away slamming into the ground creating even more obstacles. A strange green mist emits from where the chunks broke off from the main structure and dissipates a few yards from it's origin. This mist also seems to be emanating from the chunks themselves. The way appears to be blocked but for an archway that seems to lead through the structure into darkness or navigating around the broken chunks to find a way either over or around.

"well, That was random." remarks Tanser.
