Zandoran was left at the doors of the Temple of Eternal Dawn when he was but a small child. The Monks there took him in and raised him as one of their own. Training focused on the synergy of three components to create a TRUE WARRIOR; Combat Skill, Strong Spirit and Healthy Body. The body has to be free of tension, filled with endurance, flexibility, effortless movement and explosive potential.
Zandoran trained hard and advanced quickly through the ranks. One day, soon after the 15th anniversary of his arrival at the temple a fellow Monk returned from a sojourn with a package addressed to Zandoran. The package contained a Katar emblazoned with a Coat of Arms but nothing else. When Zandoran questioned his friend he was told that the package had been in the Monks room one evening with no clue as to how it got there…
Curiosity got the better of him and so Zandoran approached the head of his order and asked permission to travel the world and seek the owner of the blade…

Needing some shins to fund his expedition he hired himself out as a body guard to Ythindra
Zandoran feels that Zippo probably looks down on him for not using "real" weapons in a fight
Crash really freaks Zandoran out, but thankfully he has been given the keys to Crash's manacles so he feels a little safer now

OOLIN remembers little from her past. She knows Mig rescued her from She knows she is on the run from a shady organization that gave her her cybernetic implants, and they've been on the run since then. She has no idea for what purpose the organization 'built' her but she knows that for some reason they tried to destroy her. The organization attempted to destroy her remotely but all that accomplished was severing what control, communications and tracking link they still had on her. So she's in the wind, and trying to build a life of her own. Are they still looking for her? Who knows? What does Mig know about her past, and why did he rescue her?

She has never had a name, only an alphanumeric designation/callsign. From what little she remembers from her time in the laboratories of the organization that made her what she is, they've only ever addressed her this way: N1700. It is etched onto the sole of her right foot. After she escaped, lost and alone, she has on occasion had to give her name to people she's met. "OOLIN". (which is N1700 read upside-down, of course!)

OOLIN wants to learn all she can about the numenera. She collects cyphers and implants - particularly those that augment her mind, though in order to survive in the world she's not above acquiring those that enhance her physically as well.

During her wanderings (some time after escaping from her makers) she found herself in a small town named Fasten, accused of a crime she didn't commit. Mig made a huge sacrifice and freed OOLIN under cover of night, choosing to be banished forever with her, but choosing Truth. They have travelled together since then.

Zippo grew up in a martial family. His whole family were members of the same mercenary company, and growing up he got training from the best fighters, grooming him for command.

It was when he got older that he realized that the jobs they were taking were for really bad men, doing horrible things. One day, he got the order to kill a baker's son to send a message. When he refused, he had to kill his companions in self defense. He gave all his money to the baker so he could get his family to safety.

Having nowhere else to turn, Zippo took work as a caravan guard. Each job taking him further away from his family and the mercenary company.

This is where he first met Mig, and the two trained together on their travels.

Ythindra is horrendously deformed, and has been so since birth. The right side of her body was originally scaled and inhuman, and the left side relatively unblemished. During her formative years, she was snatched by local youth, and they put her into the coals, attempting to purge her of that which was distasteful.

The youth yet live, know having grown to adulthood. Ythindra, having grown under the tutelage of her mother, a reknowned nano of the area, found herself with similar gifts. The incident with the fire, however, awakened great powers. Her touch could heal wounds outright. Save for those of her own acquired before the incident.

Appalled and heartbroken, the youths and adults of her village loath and love her. Unable to look directly at her, as a reminder to their own deficiencies as well as her own, they nonetheless treasure her abilities and place in their lives.

Deep in her heart, however, she longed for release from her bonds. When her mother died, she inherited much of her duties and responsibilities. In the dark of the night, she packed what was important and fled.

On the road, she came across the strange creature known as Crash. She finds in his mannerisms a kindred spirit; touched by the numenera and cursed by the sensitivities of strangers.

The Lanten family tree reveals a long line of ancestors who've served as Constables in a small town in the region of Navarene, called Fasten. Mig, and his lineage, are known to everyone and opinions vary. Despite an occupation that rewards suspicious hunches, Mig is good-natured and leans on humor to diffuse tense situations, and he likes to give people the benefit of the doubt. He has a knack for reading people's tells; those micro facial movements that convey an individual's mood and disposition. To Mig, people are open books.

His gift for empathy helps him navigate social situations and control them to avoid misunderstandings and prevent useless conflicts from erupting. But, the constant bombardment of emotions from those around him takes a toll. He used to wear his heart on his sleeve, but ever since the Incident, he tries to close himself off and remain inscrutable to others out of a sense of self-preservation.

His family's creed: In essentials, Unity. In non-essentials, Liberty. In all things, Charity. Someone has to stand up for the helpless, the weak, and the unprotected. Mig believes this duty (more like an inheritance than an obligation) falls to him?and has thus spent much of his life watching out for people. When he sees someone in trouble, he is the first to lend his hand. He might give up his last shin to help the hungry, take a beating to save a person from the same, or call on his own friends to tackle an injustice wherever it might lead.

He bears many scars from previous conflicts. He treats each one as a token of someone's gratitude, a permanent currency. His self-imposed exile has led him to wander, righting wrongs where he can, and moving on before he makes too strong of an impression and word reaches those that would see him hang for his political indiscretion.

Connections
Before The Incident Mig often took security jobs for caravans. This is where he met Zippo and eagerly absorbed the martial knowledge that Zippo could provide.
The Incident: Some time ago, Mig took the side of an outsider, defending them from the retribution of his town's council. She was the scapegoat for a crime she couldn't have committed. But it was an easy conviction for the council, outsiders make closing cases easy. Mig, slipped in and freed the accused under cover of night, choosing to be banished forever with this stranger, but choosing Truth. Her name is OOLIN.

Crash has lived off the scraps of society for as long as he could remember, watching, mimicking and hunting to quench the hunger inside him. Always alone, on the outside watching and waiting. He got his name from when he was younger as a ‘child’ one who would shambling and rush through the forests chasing his prey making feral noises with the anticipation of eating his prey. A wife’s tale at times he found out for what happened to bad children, the Crashing Thing will come and get you if you go into the forests alone at night. As he got older he learned and stopped attacking the livestock of villages as he moved around quite a bit since sometimes he would cause problems for people due to misunderstandings while other times they just didn’t like the look of him. He’d learn to hunt what would not be missed, predators in the area causing problems or vermin although he would hunt vermin in greater amounts since they weren’t very filling sometimes supposed criminals were never found for a reason. As he grew older due to his nature he was oddly quick to figure out people since he was one to always watch first versus think what he would do. Acting like others instead of his first impulse meant he could manipulate people at times, it wasn’t something he needed to hunt but it kept people from stopping him from doing so. Thriest eventually seems to be on the way of Crash’s nomadic path. A place of great wonders might mean a lot of different people. Maybe even a place where he could stay inside at night.

Connections:
Zandoran has keys to a set of manacles to bind him
Ythrinda helps him find wild game instead of the alternative

@Remnant: What is Crash's motivation? You touched on something towards the end of his story where he might like to sleep "inside" at night.
Does he long to join/rejoin civilized society? Is that what he wants? I'm trying to find some common bond to Crash that could explain why he has grouped up with these characters. What is the value that Crash brings to a group of travelers?

I get that Ythrinda pities him (or is it that she pities his more sentient, potential victims) and helps him hunt (and therefore selectively influence) his prey - keeping unsuspecting village children safe from being cannabilized. But, Zandoran's connection is to bind him in mannacles, which to me seems more like we have joined forces with a feral creature that is more threatening than it is beneficial. Or, have we joined forces with a wild human that abhors his animalistic past, and is wants to change (more like a Lycanthrope seeking a cure)?

Primarily to survive I figure is his motivation. Crash is still learning about humans since he's always watching. Packs of humans can probably hunt better prey he figures and eating more is always good versus not eating and starving. He's been nomadic due to culture shock of what he does and what others do. While imitation is easy understanding is harder. Like what's so great about sleeping 'inside'? He doesn't know but everyone else seems to do it so he's curious why and wants to experience things to try and understand.

On the meta side of things being on the outside all the time gives you a different perspective on how people react, eye contact when they're fearful, how people react to each other differently, when to speak, smile, or spit.

I read into Ythrinda sees the way people look at her and how people look at Crash, he's a human with horrific tendencies but still wears bandages to cover himself from realization people due look at him differently. They do the same with her regardless of if they know her but try and appear polite and it get s awkward. Keeping Crash not thinking about the next meal means he can focus on other things since he won't be distracted, he's somewhat intelligent if you're thinking about as a feral animal more than a man so it should be interesting to roleplay moments of common sense brilliance one wouldn't expect from him.

Giving Zandoran the key was mostly since he got spooked Crash doesn't look like a normal human, granted seeing someone odd looking talk and have moments of clarity for some is disturbing. It was to make him feel safer as a gesture which Crash can understand since he understands what he looks like from others perspectives, he just doesn't personally get it since he's always looked this way. A shackled beast is still a beast though. I'd change it to a feral human that understands his nature and tries every day to keep it in check (Gazes into the Abyss to me meant staring into looking at the darkness inside you versus letting it envelope you). Not sure end game what he's going to want out of life but being around others more closely and not stalking them will likely be a learning experience.

That make sense or add to the questions? FYI I did roll randomly to get the character generated and fleshed out what he was like after the fact.

Crash, as a character, makes sense. As in, he is internally consistent.
But, his back story and anti-social nature makes it difficult to understand why we all wouldn't want him manacled.

Why would law-abiding citizens (for the most part) hook up with Crash?
Numenera doesn't really do Character Alignments so, at the end of the day, I'm still wondering: how/why do these characters all align? I can get there with all but Crash.

The only way I can make it make sense, is to think of Crash as a sort of pet that Ythrinda has brought along and that the group obliges insofar as they hold Ythrinda to be a valuable, contributing member of the group.

Perhaps GM could help connect the dots...

The backstory is a bit clique though. Another way to look at it he's a monster on the surface normal people keep all the ugly bits on the inside if you think about it and mask it. From watching humans he's learned a few things but he still looks the way he does and his nature is already ingrained.

Do you mean the group or just normal average Joe off the street? Joe bag of donuts I figure would more likely to say, 'Eww get away from be freak!' based on his perception and comfort level (Crash ain't pretty) and look away. For the group I don't know besides Zandoran and Ythrinda. Crash voluntarily gave the key to Zandoran since it made him feel better. That said it's manacles, not a straight jacket, muzzle, and full body cuffs. He'd likely be more protective of Ythrinda than the rest of the group though. But if you want to go with he's a pet and that's how you make sense of it that's how you make sense of it, if you brought it up he'd likely want you to explain since he doesn't get it.

I totally get Crash's story/character. I think the issue has more to do with the nature of play-by-post, asynchronous character creation... where we are all making a character in a vaccuum and THEN trying to establish some connection. If we were all sitting around the table, it'd be a lot easier to shape the consistency of the group's approach to their respective characters. As in, we'd all be talking about the game, our intentions, etc., and start to know how to craft a character that would fit that dynamic.

As it stands, my character probably would just avoid Ythrinda because of Crash. Unless there was some reason not to... which is what I'm looking for. Hopefully njohn858 can help resolve the cloudy parts of why we are a group.

Going off the original premise writeup, Crash would most likely be the first to notice bandits or wild creatures even in pitch black dark nights when the fire is out. The group is likely together since six people is a more difficult number to ambush than onesies and twosies. Considering what you've said you probably prefer seeing Crash's back so that way you know where he is.
GM says:
You are from various small villages in a forested area in a country called Thaernor. For various reasons you have left your birthplace to travel the road, which eventually leads to Thriest, which to your villager ears sounds like an exotic place full of wonder and opportunity. Some of you may have grown up together, and you've spent several days traveling along the road, stopping at villages or established campsites for mutual safety from bandits and wild creatures. Most of the road is drit, but there are occasional slightly elevated stretches where fitted pieces of stone or synth show through, indicating that this was built by a previous civilization. The durable road means trade is common, mainly for animal pelts and exotic wood, but hunters sometimes find ruined structures in the wilderness, which draws explorers looking for the numenera.

Yeah, I guess I would interpret Crash's description as being one of the wild creatures that we are seeking protection from in said band/group. But, I digress. I like the idea of tolerating Crash for his 'alert/alarm' skills. That could make sense... but you're right, I would want him in front! :)

OOLIN would be wary of Crash too. Well, she's wary of everyone but Mig, but given the way she's going to be looking at Ythindra as a supernatural being (and not necessarily a benevolent one) then she might look at Crash as a demon dog.

Crash is naturally this way, right? I mean, he's not a bio-engineered weapon or something? Because if he is (and if this fact is apparent) then OOLIN would definitely feel a sort of kinship with him.
Mar 7, 2017 2:45 am
The backgrounds don't have to fit together 100% cleanly. The character connection process is supposed to be a simple/natural way to give a general reason why everyone is together.

As I read through everything again, I see two storylines emerge:

1) Mig and Zippo (long-time friends) freed OOLIN and are traveling (or escaping, depending on timeline) toward Thriest

2) Ythrinda is traveling with her bodyguard, Zandoran, and came across Crash. Ythrinda, sensing a sort of bond, invited Crash to travel with them, but Zandoran was considerably more cautious. As a gesture of goodwill, Crash gave Zandoran the key to his manacles. Sated, the three of them are traveling North.

The two groups met at one of the campsites along the way, and since they were headed in the same direction, agreed to travel together. Having just met, Zippo and Zandoran are still feeling each other out since they took drastic different paths with their weapons training, and Ythrinda's healing capabilities extends to the cybernetics, which is something OOLIN hasn't previously encountered.

Does that work for everyone? If so, let's get this party started!

Sounds good! I like it that there's some rough edges - good opportunity for RP! Let's go! :-)
