New to DND and to gamers Plane, just starting out

Hello friends,
Thanks to the Adventure Zone Podcast im very interested in playing dnd 5e but due to my schedule im unable to play in the flesh and was directed here by someone on reddit.
My question is do i need a rule book and a set of dice? Im super fresh to RPGs and dnd in general.
Iv only just registered with this site about 2 hrs ago and any advice on where to start and if there are beginner friendly games would just be amazing.

Looking forward to playing as many of you as possible

Gamers plane comes with dice built in, so you won't need to grab any to play by post! As for rules... You can get a free copy of the system reference document here, though it isn't the complete set of rules it should be more than enough to get started. If you keep your eyes peeled in the new games that are popping up and the games tavern for future games I'm sure you'll find a game of 5e in no time!

Welcome BenChang! As Genisisect said, beginner-friendly games of 5E start regularly. One of the benefits of this Play-by-Post system is that it's really easy to learn as you go; there's plenty of time to look things up or ask question between turns.

Hey BenChang! Welcome to Gamers' Plane. Don't fret on not having experience; a number of people on GP started in the same position. As mentioned for 5e (and a number of other systems), there are System Reference Documents (known as SRDs or something similar) that can provide you the base rules. They don't contain the full rules, but enough to do things like character generation. And also as mentioned, GP provides you with all the digital tools you need to play online (except maps, which I need to figure out a solution for, heh). You'll be able to add dice rolls straight to a post, and the software will roll them for you, adding them to the post. Keep your eyes on the Games Tavern for new games coming up, which will often advertise as new player friendly or not. Or you can post a thread describing what you're looking for. A lot of the GMs on GP who run new-player friendly games are happy to help out someone who's never played before. I think you'll fit in just fine here, so long as you don't suffer from recurring changnesia.
