Character Creation and Discussion Thread

Just for ease, here's the games basic character creation info. I'll update this post as necessary with allowed material, suggestions, and world building information.

Players are 6th level characters with one of the Half-Dragon templates drawn from here.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JTdV4rAmODvGZ6ZLD0BJltBIzYcVqWE0gzwgWXm30Vc/edit

You may either roll your ability scores twice or use the standard set of ability scores. Hit points are average.

They start with a single uncommon and common magic item along with 5000 gold for expenses and mundane gear.

I allow all of Unearthed Arcana.

Hi, Crixus!

I don't know why you invited me to your game but I'm glad because it sounds awesome! I haven't been able to access your Half-Dragon Templates document yet (need permission to access) but right off the bat I'm imagining a Gold Scion Mystic

And I've been around the site for a little while so if you ever need any help with any of it I'd be more than happy to help! :-)
May 29, 2017 8:34 pm
Wow...those templates are really cool. No idea which way I want to go at the moment; too many neat choices! Happy to fill in a gap on the team.
May 29, 2017 8:39 pm
This does look awesome. I look forward to diving into this.
May 29, 2017 8:48 pm
I wanted to give different options so people aren't locked into the standard half-dragon choices of sorcerer, barbarian, or paladin.
May 29, 2017 9:26 pm
I just read the document and wow! Definitely going Gem for my mystic!
Quote:
They learn two Disciplines and have a mental ability score that they use with all psionic effects depending on their type
So that's 2 Disciplines in addition to what my mystic levels give me, right?

And does that mean that even when I use disciplines granted by class and not by race I still use the mental ability based on my racial type?

So you chose a half-dragon type as well as a class, right?

Yes.

If playing a Mystic you could use one or the other.

Yes, you do choose both.
May 29, 2017 10:04 pm
So the half-dragon stuff is called templates, does that mean we pick a race and then add the half-dragon features to it?

Stat rolls.

After dropping lowest:
11, 15, 13, 15, 12, 10
12, 11, 11, 16, 15, 12

There's no rerolling 1's, right?

If we go "chosen"/shadow and rogue the cunning action is redundant correct? There's no additional bonus if you already have that benefit correct?
May 30, 2017 3:07 am
Submitted my Emerald Half-Dragon Awakened Mystic. But then I went through the templates again and saw the Purple template. Better stat boosts in exchange for the bonus Disciplines. Still deciding.

1. How do these psi point numbers work? As a Mystic do I basically ignore those numbers and instead follow the Mystic progression table? Or are these racial psi points in addition to the normal progression?

2. For the Emerald focusing on two Disciplines at once I interpret that as the two bonus Disciplines (Precognition & Iron Durability) but what happens if I want to focus on one of my other Disciplines? Do I lose focus on one of the bonus ones, or both? Can I, for example, maintain focus on Precognition while I shift focus from Iron Durability to Intellect Fortress?

I've not started creating a character yet. I wasn't around today, so I'm unlikely to have time to build a character until Wednesday. I might be able to make a start but tomorrow is likely to be crazy, first day at work after a holiday.

So we build these characters as normal, but add the templates? Point buy is ok? I don't like trusting my abilities to dice but if that's the rules...
May 30, 2017 9:17 am
I'm going to build an Adamantine Wizard. Might take me a few days.
May 30, 2017 4:57 pm
I am strongly leaning towards a "Chosen"-Mithral Level 5 Rogues/ Level 1 Fighter. I was hoping to know a bit more about the world before selecting a background or writing a backstory.

Marthas is a mystical region dominated by floating land masses called islands. Each one is ruled by a single dragon, of which there is only one of each type. If the dragon ever dies a new egg is formed in their Hoard, which has several mystical properties in addition to also being a giant pile of money. Scions are their elite nobility/warriors/bureaucrats/leaders, depending on the island in question.

Every island reflects their draconic ruler in culture, terrain, and denizens. I specifically left it vague so that players could fill in the gaps if they wanted to, but here are just a few non-canon examples.
"Vichazier the Black rules her swampy island by corruption and manipulation. Several families, each one led by a Scion, kill one another for her favor. In the deepest parts of the swamp lizardfolk worship her as a goddess and regularly test the families to prove their faith."
"Bovrennor of the Battle waits patiently in his Hoard, long since converted into an arena. His island is almost entirely supported by the dozens of mercenary companies that operate out of them. Once every year a tournament is held and welcomes Scions from all across Marthas to win the honor of fighting Bovrennor, along with a massive prize from his own Hoard regardless of the outcome."

Religion is primarily about the draconic deities, though a few others have spread from immigrants. Bahamut, Tiamat, and Io are easily the most popular of deities to worship, though those with psionic powers almost all pay homage to Sardior and Tamara's clergy have outposts on most islands, offering healing for an affordable fee.

Information about the outside world is sparse at best and just plain wrong at worse. The only real facts concern the Generos Empire, which has been watched by the few spies placed there for a long time. Highly expansionist, they've managed to conquer half the world in just a century, though rebellions are common. They seem to possess a higher level of technology which is what has allowed them this far.

Yes you add the template after making your character.

The standard set of ability scores is 15, 14, 12, 10, and 8.

You can add those Psi points to your total amount. It's a pretty hefty part of the template.

You could maintain one of your bonus Disciplines and another of your regular Mystic disciplines at the same time.

Wow, so I thought Half-Dragon was a race in and of itself (with the type as subrace). In other words I was looking at it as a homebrew dragonborn. But I guess I was wrong.

So you mean you can have a Half-Human-Half-Dragon? Or a Half-Dragon-Half-Elf (that would make it a quarter-elf)? A Half-Halfling sounds funny. And what happens if you start with a PHB Dragonborn and lay the Half-Dragon template on it?!

Joking aside, with the template racial features on top of standard racial features this is badass stuff!

I guess I'm joining now! Gonna get to work on my character straight away. One thing, does the standard system include point-buy?
Jun 5, 2017 12:44 pm
I've posted Teraxus Grimtooth, a Radiant, Astral, Half- Dragon, Dragonborn Paladin (just managed to say that without taking a breath).
Jun 5, 2017 8:57 pm
I didn't get a reply so I went ahead and made my character with point-buy. If that's not okay just say and I'll switch to the standard array.

Anyway, I've posted my character: Hinoka the Chosen, Fang, Half-Dragon, High Elf Kensei Monk.

Also, one other thing. What is the appearance of the Half-Dragons like? Is it just like their non dragon race with wings and stuff or is it more like just a humanoid dragon with very few traits of the non dragon race?

Hey y'all! Thanks for the invite. I'll put together a character in a bit here. Excited about a higher-than-1st-level starting point!
Jun 8, 2017 9:20 pm
As tempting as the psionics are, I'm 90% sure I'm going shadow -> war cleric or valor bard...?
Jun 8, 2017 9:49 pm
As far as I know we dont have either of those, so probably a good idea! I don't have any idea wherew everyone else has disappeared off to though...
Jun 8, 2017 10:36 pm
I'm just waiting. We haven't heard from or DM in a long while.
Jun 8, 2017 10:46 pm
Yep, just waiting here as well. Our current party , I believe, is:
Mystic
Wizard
Fighter
Paladin
Monk
Jun 8, 2017 10:48 pm
Cleric would be perfect, but bard has healing too.
Jun 8, 2017 10:48 pm
Perfect, that cements it for me... Heals and archery!

(May end up going with that new UA heals warlock, but hey. Same idea)

Edit: And rolls...

14, 10, 15, 14, 14, 17.

Not bad!

Here we have Felix the half-Aasimar / half Astral dragon Valor Bard

Aasimar/Pyroclastic Healer and archer... think slightly Phoenix-like.
Jun 9, 2017 9:26 pm
So is it time to get a search party together to find the DM?
Jun 9, 2017 9:42 pm
Yeah, its been over a week, I'm beginning to worry...

Also Tookie, what's the source on the pyroclastic longbow? I can't find it any of my books.

Ooh, also I forgot to link to my sheet before, so here it is: Hinoka, the Half High-Elf / Half Fang Dragon Monk
Last edited June 9, 2017 9:45 pm

Sorry, that's more of a note to myself. The astral dragon Pyroclastic type can summon (as a bonus action) a weapon that deals +(proficiency)d8 per hit. So I'm planning on using a summoned longbow to do 4d8 twice per round! Only downside is I can't use it for reaction OAs (it disappears at end of turn).
Jun 9, 2017 9:59 pm
Aaaah, makes sense. Also really cool!
Jun 9, 2017 10:01 pm
I can't see Hinoka's sheet; I believe you'd need to share it to the library to make it visible to more than you and the GM.
Jun 9, 2017 10:07 pm
Sorry, I think its fixed now!

Looking at it, the pyroclastic perk looks brutally powerful in comparison to the other features of its kind. The only others that even come close are perhaps Howling and Tartarian, and even then they don't offer the sheer utility of an extra (proficiency)d8 every turn.

I know, it's quite good. I almost didn't take it for that reason, but I'm hoping for a high power level game, given the template options. The tartarian was a close contender; heal and control? Yes please. I also was eyeing the Fang, but didn't want to step on any toes! Hinoka looks pretty great!

Did anyone make any kind of healer? Not that someone has to. Just wondering. :-)
Jun 16, 2017 4:23 am
Valor Bard here! Lots of heals and restorations from me. I'll be taking the better cleric spells with magical secrets at 10 if it seems like they are needed. I believe I recall a Paladin as well...

My Sorc will have some heals.
