Character Discussion

I've mostly got mine done. Just a couple questions.
As I was building him I decided to have him study dueling as befits a noble upbringing. My thought is to cross specialize eventually with makashi duelist. How best would I represent this training? Buy into the new spec right away or train a rank in melee?

Here is a rough sketch of his background
The Sukan family of Pantora goes back millenia and in that time was always one of the most prominent and powerful families. Sadly, the family fortunes have declined in the past generation. Ta'hida's grandfather, Wa'kawa aligned the family and all its interests with the Seperatists during the Clone War. When the Separatists were defeated and the Empire became ascendent, the family was disgraced. While there was no official censure of the family, it seemed all the once open doors became closed. The family fortune is largely spent and along with its glory is only a memory. Ta'hida's grandfather has not stopped fighting against the idea of the Republic or the Empire and instead has turned what remains of his family's wealth to suporting the Expansionist cause.

Ta'hida, along with his 5 siblings, was raised with the idea of expanding Pantora's power through negotiations with nearby systems despite their disreputable and, to most Pantorans, abhorrent way of life. Ta'hida's older brother, Kriadur, broke with this and has joined the Imperial faction and despises the family from which he was disinherited. Ta'hida, the oldest of triplets, has a strong bond with his sisters, P'aeng and Niva. His youngest brother, Ree, has developed a bad case of hero-worship toward Ta'hida, largely due to the praise and hopes that Ta'hida's grandfather has placed upon him.

Ta'hida was raised to be the focus of the Sukan family renaissance and was easily molded by his grandfather. He was trained to be charming and diplomatic and to be well aware of the local political situation and the history of the region. He was introduced to dueling as befitted a son of the Sukan, but has been pulled away for an exciting opportunity to gain real world experience in the forging of alliances with any who will help advance his family's cause. While he feels it is a part of his duty to obey his grandfather and seek his family's best interests he feels conflicted, because he's not certain that his grandfather has set a moral course. Too many of his fellow Pantorans seem to think what they are doing is abhorrent.

Fantastic backstory! This sounds like a really interesting PC.

I would probably recommend taking Makashi Duelist later, if possible, because in PbP games it's actually pretty rare to make it to big XP levels, so you really want to make that starting XP count. On the other hand, I'm not big into optimisation and it fits well with the character. If it's not obvious, I'm torn. It sounds like your PC would be an ideal face character so I'd be tempted to say that he has the training but hadn't kept up the practice for a few years, that way when you do pick up the spec it's more like he's relearning his old skills.

How do you envision this character ending up on the fringes of the Galaxy? How does he feel about the Jedi, considering his family were Seperatists?

That sounds good. Pandora is in the outer rim. I think there are a couple possibilities for him being where the story starts. Something went wrong on the diplomatic expedition be it pirates, betrayal by the scum they were trying to cut a deal with, or his brother selling them out since he has joined the imperial faction.

Jedi is a little harder. The separatists didn't like them, but they did have Dooku. The imperials hate Jedi, and he hates the imperium, does that mean the Jedi are good? I think he would be conflicted initially as most pantorans are republic minded and want it restored. So his grandfather is going against the grain. So if it fits the story, I can lean him more towards the republic mindset.

I think his desire to help his home world and the planets tradition of republic support would weigh heavily on him and he might see that as a reason to reestablish the Jedi.

Hum.. still trying to know how to create it.. my idea was creating an Human Jedi that was sent with his mother after order 66 to the X place where this story is going to start. He seeks revenge after a group in Emperor's order come to that place and killed his mother when searching for alive Jedi.

Sound a pretty close to bigtucker's character, Juse. Would you two like to collaborate on your backstory, so your characters were together since childhood, getting trained by the same Jedi, and are still together at game start? It's just an idea, I know that either of you may be understandably reluctant to do that, just thought it was worth suggesting.

gcardoso; other than backstory, what kind of Force-user do you want your character to be? What kind of skills do you see him bringing to the team? So far we have a diplomat, a gearhead, a warrior and a knowledge guy.

Do you understand the technical part (character sheet, etc) and are now working on the story part of it (character background)?

oh i didnt read any of the other guys storys yet, since im kinda busy this days. Yeah thats some parts i dont really know how to do..
my objetive was to get a fighting style similar to Luke Skywalker. I'm kinda seeing by character being focused on his objetive though he can be merciful depending on situations ( yes he's getting closer to dark side ).

Oh, you don't have the books?! Sorry, I didn't realise that! Would you be able to get access to, at least, the Force and Destiny Core Rulebook, perhaps from a library? It would make it much easier for you if you can read up on the different character types and the rules of the game.

Ok, made the following adjustments to the backstory to fit it in a little more neatly.

Wa'kawa's plans have led to tragedy, however. Ta'hida's parents were murdered on a diplomatic mission to the nearby regions. Discovery of this struck the final blow to the Sukan family fortunes. Ta'hida has broken with his grandfather and thrown his weight behind the Republican faction, however during an altercation with Kriadur, he let spontaneously tapped into the force. Kriadur went to the nearest Imperial forces to denounce Ta'hida as a Jedi. His family's fortunes in tatters and in personal danger, Ta'hihda fled the system, only stopping long enough to grab his dueling blade, a blaster he wasn't supposed to know was in the house, some non-descript clothing and a few other personal effects.

Since then Ta'hida has been hitching rides aboard tramp freighters by practicing with his newfound power to reinforce his natural charm. He has resolved that to serve his people best he needs to re-establish the Jedi Order and to restore his family's standing.

I have approved the four submitted character sheets even though there are a couple of little things to be sorted on some of them. For any of you who may not have used Gamersplane before, you can now post in-character in these game forums. You should now see an option above the text box which says "Post as" and gives you the option to post as Player or your character. When posting as your character it puts the character portrait at the side so it's easy for everyone to see who you are. Feel free to test it out here!

I'll be doing a short Prologue which will get the team together before you all blast off into Chronicles of the Gatekeeper. I said in my PMs that I would post the opening scene tomorrow, but it's ready to go so perhaps i should just do it now. No point in hanging around, is there?
