Session 1: Ascent through First Find

Blinded in both eyes the creature tries desperately to slink away. At which point there's a SNAP noise as it's jaw finally dislocates from Tezoc's wrenching at it. Now that it's head is purely dead-weight, it collapses onto the now off-balance Tezoc, some of the fangs scraping into his exposed flesh but more importantly being half a tonne of flesh and hide falling down onto him. It slumps down on the side of the scree slope, twitching.

The cavern is still shaking from the aftermath of the combat.

With a triumphant roar Tezoc heaves the carcass off of himself. "Follow Tezoc!" he booms, leading the way ti the now unobstructed passage.

I nod and follow after Tezoc. "Someone else can study the architecture down there."
Oct 16, 2017 6:09 pm
"But why did we fight that thing if we aren't going to check out the pool?" Florian protests but he follows Tezoc and Xadra out from under the now shaky cavern roof. "Or at least go skin that thing?"
Oct 16, 2017 6:49 pm
Max makes sure everyone is moving toward the exit. Anyone straggling he grabs by the arm and drags out of the collapsing cavern.

There's probably too much going on for anyone to notice or care, but his face is bright red and there's steam coming out of his ears with anger.
Oct 16, 2017 7:07 pm
"There will be more architecture to be found further in." Tezoc replies, gesturing with his macuahuitl. "And more things to fight," he adds with relish.
Oct 17, 2017 4:58 pm
"We fought that thing because it attacked us," Lucas shrugs, wiping his sword on a piece of cloth. "In the future we should be more careful where we step. Or we might meet its mother."
Oct 21, 2017 6:34 pm
"I will eat its mother's eyeballs! And use its father's bones to pick my teeth!!!"

Cordero sits down on a large rock near Florian and begins cleaning his blades by torchlight. "That's all well and good for you, Tezoc. You go runnin' 'round here lookin' for giant monsters to send you back to whichever of the hells you crawled up from," he says with a half-joking smirk. "But the truth is, your personal quest for glory—i can only assume that's what drove you to continue engaging an already neutralized threat while a larger threat increased—is gonna get someone killed. And judging solely by the impressive display of rippin' that lizard's face in half, it probably won't be you."

He pauses moment, holding his dagger up in the air, slowly rotating it to catch glints of light on the blade, checking for cleanliness. He goes back to cleaning and continues, "I dunno anything about the culture where you're from, but as I see it, there's no glory in puttin' your team in danger for personal gain. Shit, I'd go so far as to say that if you're willin' to put someone weaker in harms way just to satisfy some personal desire, that makes you a coward."

Max glances up from his task for just a split second to make sure the man who just split that monsters head isn't charging at him right this second, then returns to his task.

Tezoc blinks, then explodes into uproarious laughter. "I did not tell you to stay and fight, little man. If you were scared by the falling rocks you should have all run away while Tezoc slew the monster alone!" Without waiting for a reply, Tezoc turns away and starts down the tunnel, laughing all the way, wiping away tears of mirth.

Seeing Tezoc heading down the tunnels, Lucas lets up his arms. "He's going to bring every creepy crawly in this place down on us with all that noise," he sighs, before following the barbarian.
Oct 22, 2017 6:19 pm
"Of course they'll find him first and that's just the way he wants it. Not bad all things considered." Florian comments to Lucas as they walk in the barabrian's wake.
Oct 22, 2017 8:09 pm
"He roots them out, I shoot them down. Sometimes he gets the killing blow." I shrug, not seeing any downside. We’re all alive. Why is he complaining?
Oct 24, 2017 6:00 pm
"I don't care if he brings more conflict down on our heads. Whatever. I can handle that. What concerns me is that if he's uninterested in making sound tactical decisions in the heat of battle then he's a greater danger to those of us fighting along side him than the enemies we'll face."

Max looks around at the group as they walk and makes a quick assessment. "Have any of you fought as a member of a team or unit before?"

Trudging through the darkness is tough going in the cave complex, illuminated solely by Florian's torch. It snakes at awkward, almost painful angles as it carves a way deeper into the earth, and soon there's a real concern that it won't lead to a way out.

But eventually, mercifully, it opens out into something resembling architecture. A ruined catacomb perhaps? It's marked with pillars and collapsed building piles, but is unmistakably constructed and ancient architecture. The room stretches deep into the inky dark distance, but at the far end there is a sign of light gently outlining a staircase in an archway, what must be two hundred foot or so away

"I happen to have fought with the..." Lucas begins to reply to Maximilien, but entering the new room he suddenly goes silent.

Noticing the light in the distance, he turns to the rest. "Should we try to sneak up and get a look, or are we just running forward sword swinging again?" he asks in a whisper.
Oct 25, 2017 7:24 pm
Tezoc winks at the others and strides forward without a word. As he does so an vision comes unbidden to his mind. It's uncertain if it's a memory or a premonition.

Tezoc strides forward through a resplendent hall. Massive columns on gilt pedestals support an impossibly high, vaulted ceiling half-shrouded in mist. Elaborate mosaics, done in polished stone studded with gems, cover every inch of floor. At the end of the hall, an empty, jade throne. Cheers erupt from the assembled throng arrayed in finery as Tezoc moves. Something crunches underfoot. Tezoc looks down and sees a child's toy: a brass, clockwork bird, crushed under his sandaled foot. He crouches to pick it up...

The vision is gone. Tezoc is crouched amid the rubble of the present. He runs his callused palms over the floor and columns, studying the architecture. Perhaps there are clues here to who built this place.

"Seems like we should clear this area out before moving on to the next, yeah? That way nothing can sneak up behind us."

Max kneels down and begins lighting a second torch.

Max lights a second torch, and the room brightens up significantly

The great pillars are easily visible, with their connections to the roofs and their beautiful carvings. The room appears much less wide than long; definitely some kind of long burial or ceremonial chamber, it's goods mostly lost to the ages. But it bodes well; you're obviously heading back into the temple, right?

The presence of the light makes shadows dance along the walls. It feels off here somehow, the air feels wrong and Beast is growling like they sense something. Nonetheless, Tezoc examines the pillar. The resemblance to his vision is uncanny, but maybe that's just his mind playing tricks on him. It's almost legible despite the erosion.

Tezoc, how did your society honour their dead? How would they be memorialised?

Tezoc would have no recollection of this (not yet, but seeing an example might trigger another vision), but the dead are sealed inside stone architecture to serve as spirit guardians. They may become a hall's central pillar, or laid in a structure's foundation, or the keystone in its facade. In every case, the dead's likeness is carved into the stone.
