"In the name of the Empire I command you lay down your arms," Lucas calls out to the creatures. "Comply and show us the way out and we will let you live."

Max remembers reading about kobolds in a dusty tome I'm a neglected corner of one of the academy libraries, a section primarily containing writings on dragons. Though still "officially" classified as history, many people have doubts as to whether or not they existed at all.

Of course, whatever that giant water snake lizard thing was might have been an ancient dragon for all he knows.

And, of course, kobolds. They're pretty that dragons existed at some point, right?

What is this fuckin' place?

"Careful. These li'l buggers may not be all that tough, but they're fond of gadgets, traps, and tricks. Let's don't go rushin' in, aye?"

Are those shoulder-mounted spear launchers?

"Sounds fair, although they may not be too keen on coming toward us either." I ready an arrow just in case.

It should have been just the site The Prospector found after the earthquakes. But given the geological shake up of the environment it could be that this previously sealed up section of the complex has collapsed into a series of kobold warrens.

No ones really plumbed the depths of the Western Reaches before so no one is really sure what the state of the caverns are down here. It could be the entire thing is a network of caves all loosely arranged over each other.

The room you're in does resemble the architecture of the temple you were in before the fall though. That much is clear.

Oh no. No nothing like that. Good grief could you even imagine?
No they're Shoulder mounted HARPOON launchers.

One of the kobolds growls and barks back something guttural. It's vaguely understandable. They're panicked and weren't expecting to see a group of surface folk wandering about down here. Some of the other kobolds are yipping and arguing about what to do here: the barbarian being right out in front bellowing a challenge has them obviously spooked. Finally one with a better command of language yarks out a reply to Lucas

"Not drop weapons. Not trust you. You stop be still. We work out what to do with you"

"I tire of this yapping. Do not try Tezoc's patience!" straining his eyes against the shadows Tezoc tries to determine just how many of the creatures there are exactly.

Florian wants to use his Bardic Lore. What is it kobolds fear the most?
Nov 26, 2017 5:55 pm
Florian, you've heard an ode named The Worrisome Kobold, often sung in taverns when everyone is raucous during winter festivals. The lyrics start off about a kobold being worried about disappointing it's dragon overlord, getting into more and more ridiculous situations and getting even more exasperated as a result. Like all tavern songs, the lyrics quickly get bawdy as the verses go on and there's many regional variants of the song (generally substituting local lords and ladies as characters in it), but it always starts the same; the kobold is deathly frightened of failing it's dragon master.

Tezoc's voice echoes through the cavern. The two aiming their harpoons at him are looking nervously at each other, as well as the one who spoke out just now. Probably terrified about what will happen if they miss. The amount of movement from behind the scree and pillars gives Tezoc the impression that there's at most six or seven of the critters here in the room with you.

Florian calls out to the dithering kobolds. "I can only imagine what your draconic masters would think when the few of you that survive report that one human took down so many of you." Florian gestures towards the impatient Tezoc. "We wouldn't even have a chance to help once he gets started. Let us pass and we'll all just pretend that this meeting never happened, eh?"
OOC:
OK, I basically want I want to try and Parley our way through this using the threat of Tezoc as my leverage. Is that cool?

OOC:
Seems legit to me. You've got some leverage here.
Dec 1, 2017 9:56 pm
Well then, here goes. The RNG gods finally smile on me.

The kobolds start chittering and yarking at each other. The loud one that's been speaking to you shushes them all eventually and steps forward, unarmed.
"Fine. FINE. We came for fish lizard not humans" they yark "We go kill it. You go away. We not see you. Good?". There's some murmurings from behind them that seem resigned, but reluctantly grateful for not having to be stuck fighting adventurers.

If you want to push them further they might be open to talk, but they are still a little wary of you.

"Oh, you might be disappointed. Our dragon of a man here just tore its head in twain with his bare hands.

You help us out, give us some information about what might be in store for us down here, maybe which direction to go, and we'll be sure not to tell your dragon master that Tezoc did what you could not, should we run into him... or her. It. Whatever.

I lower my bow for the moment. It seems these creatures are willing to negotiate. As long as they're not a threat, there's no need to shoot 'em. I absently stroke Beast's fur. The cougar's wild-eyed look and matted fur (missing in places) terrifying to most but endearing to me.
OOC:
I can't remember if I named my animal companion or not.

Everyone willing to take Max and Xadra's lead here and pass the kobolds with no incident? :)
Dec 5, 2017 11:37 pm
OOC:
Everyone (including me) will groan if Tezoc tries to challenge a dragon. So yeah I'm good with letting them go.

"You... you kill it?" the Kobolds say in disbelief. "We... we let you leave. We move quick. Get tasty food for a month"

The kobolds scamper past, their crude weapons trailing alongside them. Florian gets a quick look one of the harpoon launchers as a kobold passes by; they're launched by some wound elastic, like a gigantic tubed crossbow. They look more likely to fall apart than successfully launch. One of them with no harpoon in the chamber stops as they pass you, looks at your wounded shoulder, and passes on without saying a word.

Seven kobolds pass by, yarking and chirping as they charge past you towards the underground lake. They'll be occupied grabbing that lizard for a while. It is now oddly quiet without them here.
Dec 6, 2017 11:55 pm
Tezoc spits. "Those little ones weren't worth fighting. We move on. Come." then he continues towards the doorway across the large hall.
Dec 7, 2017 5:25 pm
Florian gives that kobold a death stare as it scampers by but says nothing.

Florian is happy to let Tezoc take the lead as Florian has met his quota for being a target today.
Dec 9, 2017 10:00 pm
At the end of the room through the archway is a ruined spiral staircase, overgrown with moss; upwards the route has been crudely barricaded from this side; probably by the kobolds. Downwards, it's pitch black.
Dec 12, 2017 8:52 pm
"So something above us scares the kobolds enough to put up a barricade." Florian sighs. "Can't wait to meet it. Tezoc, I think this barrier calls for your magnificent muscles eh?"
