Yeah, on PbP, I'm always a fan of the DM either waiving things like that or doing the rolling for the players (like initiative). In a RL game, death saves and medicine checks take seconds. In PbP, it could be days. Although trying to stabilize a character while still in combat would need a roll since that would be your action.

Some would call that metagaming. I would call it a game mechanics representation of how badly injured the fallen character is. Failing two deaths saves indicates that the character is pretty badly hurt, and one of the other players should be able to recognize that and realize they can't wait until combat is over before helping their comrade.
