This article by one of my favorite D&D writers, Mike Shea, has some great advice about building fun characters. It has some specific advice about building well-rounded characters so that you can contribute to all aspects of the game, and some common pitfalls to avoid.

I don't know if this is the right place for this, but I cna[t seem to save my weapons in my character sheet. Is there some secret I don't know?

Starrbeardo, on the Characters drop-down menu, hit "All Characters". When the page comes up, click the icon "Add to library" that is next to your character. Then if you could copy and paste the link to your character here, I can take a look at what you have so far.

Good advice McDunno!

For a quick fix, you can always write your weapon choices in the "Notes" section, and write down your attack bonuses damage, and special features information in that space.

If you want to use the "Weapons" section, you do have to click "Add Weapon" before you it gives you the text entry fields to enter the information.

There should be two open weapon slots by default with any new character sheet, though. We'll know more once we can see Starrbeardo's character sheet.

By the way, if anyone needs help figuring out how to do any of the tricks like the "quoting" feature I used above, just ask (this one is just hitting the "Quote" at the bottom left of the post you want to quote from).

Len, can we use the point-buy system for stats? I am historically terrible at rolling for my scores.

Here's my character thus far. I've typed in and added weapons but it keeps blanking out for some reason.

I think I might know the problem. Are you entering your Attack Bonus and Damage before saving? If you just enter the weapon, it doesn't save it properly. No idea why.

For example:

If I only enter "Dagger" (in Name), it disappears when I save.

If I enter "Dagger" (in Name), "1d20+5" (in Attack Bonus), and "1d4+3" (in Damage), it will save properly.

Ok cool let me take a look thanks.

Also, for attack bonus would I add my prof modifier or my strength mod, or both if I am proficient with a weapon?
Nov 1, 2017 6:31 pm
If you're proficient with a melee weapon (which, as a fighter, you're proficient with all weapons), you add both your strength and prof for the attack and just str for your damage.

If it's a ranged weapon, you add your dex and prof to the attack and just dex to the damage. For a finesse weapon like a scimitar, you can choose to use either your dex or str.

GAME SETTING

It has been twenty years since the fall of the Arkasian Empire. Once a powerful and cosmopolitan nation, Arkasia descended into corruption and decadence in its final century. Embroiled in internal politics and debt, the country failed to safeguard its borders. The barbarian tribes to their north smelled weakness and descended upon the capitol and left it in ruin.

The Arkasian Empire is now a distant memory. In its place, tyrannical city states vie for scraps of the old Empire like dogs while the countryside is left to fend for itself. Once patrolled by Arkasian soldiers, the old roads of the empire are falling into ruin and are plagued by bandits and worse. Once prosperous trade routes have dried up, and the common people now struggle for survival. Dark creatures that were once driven from Arkasia have returned to prey upon the land.

It is deep into these wild lands that your characters have journeyed. They may have many different motivations, including:

* Reclaim old artifacts of the Arkasian empire
* Become a champion of the common people
* Escape persecution from more civilized lands.
* Carve out your own kingdom
* Confront a growing threat in the wild lands
* Spread the message of your God(s)
* Seek glory and renown
* Hone and test your skills in a deadly environment
* Pursue a myth or legend in the wild lands
* Something else entirely!

Whatever their individual motivations, your characters have banded together to form this adventuring party. Perhaps it is merely a matter of strength in numbers, but perhaps there are mutual interests here as well.

HOW TO FIT YOUR CHARACTER INTO THE SETTING

The setting is left intentionally vague so that you can define parts of it that are relevant to your character. Feel free to invent the city you were from or an organization you belonged to. I may veto something that doesn't match the tone of the setting, but we are all co-creators in the setting's lore.

Share your character's backstory with the us, including what their motivations to come on this expedition into the wild lands. A paragraph or two is great. As we see each other's backstories, we might see some connections between characters that we can write into the story.

I've written a backstory in first person from my character's point of view. I may have gone a little overboard. Somewhat past the two paragraphs. Should I post it here?

Woah! Starrbeardo, that was an incredible back story! Serious props man.

No such thing.

If Barendd goes out of his way to engage in activities that make him appear more sophisticated and cultural (and, really, when do appearances become reality?), that may be how our characters know each other.

I'm still working up the background to my character, but Kit Marlowe is perhaps the premier actor of our time, appearing on stage to many rave reviews. He's a sorcerer (it runs in the family) who will be multiclassing as a warlock.

I wanted to multiclass for a number of reasons. One is that, lately, I've become obsessed with it, trying to find interesting combinations. Although I'm sure I'm not coming up with anything that hasn't been done and written about a thousand times, so I should say "interesting to me." Another reason is that I totally botched the first couple of multiclass characters I tried, so I figured it might help new players avoid some of the mistakes I made if I talk through the process as it happens.

Whatever my character ends up being, I'll use these rolls to figure out his stats. Though part of me wants to lean towards a less common race, and the Kenku look interesting to me for some reason....

So my stats should be 7, 15, 10, 16, 9, and 15?
