Hi everyone!

Thanks for joining our game! This thread is to introduce ourselves and figure out where to begin.

I'm Len, your humble Dungeon Master. I'm from Vancouver Canada, where I spend my days teaching Computer Science at a local high school. I'm also the proud father of twin 5 year old boys, and a life long gamer. I've been playing tabletop roleplaying games since the 1980s, but took a pretty long break from the hobby when I went off to university. When D&D Fifth Edition came out in 2014, I decided to get back in. I've been playing 5e ever since.

If you're new to Gamer's Plane, check out this awesome guide for new players by one of the most prolific members on the site, Naatkinson.

Also, if you don't own a D&D 5e Player's Handbook, you'll want to download a free copy of the Basic Rules, which gives you all the rules to play the game as well as the classic races (Dwarf, Elf, Hafling, Human) and classes (Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, Wizard) to build a character with.

Hey there I'm Starrbeardo. I'm work in a call center, I'm a tech adviser for a second job, and I'm also a stand-up comedian in Albuquerque, NM. I've almost no experience with RPG's but I've spent a lot of time surfing around reading lore and loving it.

Also the link to the free copy of the basic rules that you posted seems to no longer work. I'll search around for a working link though.

Welcome Starrbeardo!

Weird, that link works for me. But hey, your link works AND it is a newer version of the basic rules, so it is clearly the best link :) I'll update all of my various basic rules links to match yours.

You sound like a busy guy! I love play by post for that reason - I can't sit down for a four hour live game session, but I can contribute to PbP games in the spare minutes of my life.

Any idea what kind of character you'd like to make?

I'm currently working on a character sheet for a dwarf fighter. Once I think my sheet is complete can I submit it to the game or would it be better to post it in one of the threads here first?

Hey guys!

G3rmanicus here. I work for a Construction & Engineering services company in Houston, Tx. I have a 2 year old daughter :) I have gamed pretty much my whole life but have very minimal DnD experience. I have always wanted to learn how to play but never really had a committed group of people that could meet up and play, and im short on time myself, so Im really excited for this beginners campaign. Thank you so much for starting this.

I will be creating a human barbarian character :D

I'm both an old-timer and a new-timer. I played D&D way back during the Satanic Panic of the '80s! I played for a year or two in college, but it fell to the wayside when I discovered bars and live music. Tinnitus in my left ear and a lot of memories are my takeaways from the slacker '90s. I completely bypassed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Edition D&D and jumped back in with 5e. Now I'm a single father with sole custody of my 10-year-old daughter. A year ago, we had to move to a new town because of my job, and finding a D&D 5e game at a local game store was a way to keep my sanity as I adjusted to a new town with no friends or family within a hundred miles.

I've managed to find time every other weekend for a real-life game, but I still need to round out my D&D fix here on Gamers Plane (GP). I'm pretty well-versed with 5th Edition and have played in a GP game with Lenpelletier for some time now, so I can help out on any rules and mechanics (for the game and GP) questions people have.

I'll wait for the rest of the new players to decide what they'd like to play so I don't take something somebody has their heart set on.

Welcome G3rmanicus and McDunno! Good to have you on board. Busy dads seems to be a sub-theme in our player group. G3rmanicus, looking forward to seeing your Barbarian. Ask away if you have questions about making your character, and submit them when you are ready. I'll let you know if there are any mistakes.

Hello!

Ramen from the storm torn lands of Puerto Rico. I'm in my 3rd year of Information Systems, and work as a comp tech in the University library system. Married, but no kids yet. I'm not very experienced eith TT Roleplaying games, but I did run two Harry Potter Fate Accelerated sessions once. Sadly life has not allowed for me to continue running any more games or finding any more people to play with. I'm hoping in time to drag my wife and a friend or two into playing with me sometime though.

Regarding DnD, my first experience with it was in high school where an old friend showed me his 3.5 tome collection. I was amazed, cause I used to make up pen and paper games as a kid that were fueled by imagination as well. It seemed to be a revelation, a sort of perfected realization of my childhood musings. So, I've read books here and there, but haven't played anything myself much. I did manage to play a single session of 3.5 on roll20 as a bard which was a ton of fun, but haven't played anything since.

Anyways, thank you all for having me! I'm going through the basic rules, and hope to go with a human or half elf cleric if that's ok with everyone.

Len, are you allowing the Human variant?

Welcome to the game Ramen! That's a great story about your childhood revelation. Hope this game lives up to the one you created in your imagination :)

Clerics are awesome. Managing all those spells can get tricky, since your character can prepare entirely different lists of spells every day within the game. I really like this app for android phones that keeps keeps track of spells. There are similar websites out there as well.

Hello all, if you'd like to see some examples of what a play by post game looks like, check out this game I DMed with a bunch of experienced Gamer's Plane players awhile back. Note how players format their posts.

For example, a character's internal thoughts are italicized, and their out loud speech is bolded.

The linked game will also include some good examples of how I run combat here on PbP.

Also, as you are designing the mechanics of your characters, you may want to consider how they fit into the world. I'll post a short description of the game's setting in the character creation forum so that you can craft a backstory that is in line with the setting.

Edit: Here is the post about the setting

Hey everyone!

I'm an Elementary Education student at Florida Gulf Coast University, down in Fort Myers, Florida. Just a 22 year old kid finally accepting his inner-nerd and diving head first into everything I've always been interested in but was too intimidated to really explore as a kid. Ive only recently started playing DnD, as in like maybe 3 months ago. I picked up the starter set and have attempted to DM a couple times for some friends, but they aren't willing to really get into it so Ive been seeking other opportunities to learn to play. As far as play by post DnD, Ive never actually played a game before. Ive been on gamers plane for a couple months now and this is the first game I've actually been able to join. Im gonna apologize in advance if I mess up or ask an annoying amount of questions. Im really excited to get started and find out what DnD can be like with like-minded people!

Ask all the questions you need (and not just here)! I've been on here for a little more than a year and have found everyone to be friendly and helpful. It's a pretty supportive community here. I was new to 5e, and it didn't take long before I knew the rules better than my real life DM.

Unfortunately, new 5e games have really dried up lately. Although when I first started, it took me about a month or so before I found a game that didn't fizzle away.

As for finding a real-life game with people who are willing to get into it, try finding an Adventurer's League game in your area. It looks like there are a couple stores in Fort Myers that might fit the bill. If they don't actually host weekly games, drop in and ask if anyone has room for another player. It's how I found my group after I moved to a new town.

You'll find one of the great things about play-by-post is that you can really craft your character's responses. No worrying about trying to do a voice or an accent, no ums or uhs, no pauses while you try to quickly think of just the right thing to say. Of course, the downside is that it can sometimes get frustrating when it moves a little slow. And it may spoil things for you in a real life game when you wonder why the other players just aren't getting into the level of role play you're accustomed to.

From one nerd to another, good to have you Daykinator!

Mistakes and questions are the name of the game here, Daykinator. Hey, I tell my students all the time, you're either winning or you're learning! Although the game looks fairly complicated from the rule book, once you're playing you can pretty much just be in-character and act the way you think they would for the situation. The DM (me) can translate your actions into the rules.

Making a character involves a lot of rules too, but we will help. What kind of character were you thinking of making?

Hello everybody, I'm Jacketch. I work in retail at the moment and the upcoming holidays means that a play by post game should be perfect for me!

I've played games my whole life, and have dabbled in DnD before. A lot of my younger years were spent with my brother and cousins making up fantasy stories where we all made our own characters, so I guess we've been wanting to play this the whole time! Most of my DnD experience has been with groups where everyone was new to the game, though, so we never got too familiar with the game. I did DM a 4e game, though we didn't really know what we were doing. I've always loved reading other people's highlights online and wanted to have my own experiences like that with my own characters.

The role playing and character creation has always interested me when it comes to this game, and I've liked playing as characters that can cast spells. As for race, I haven't settled on anything yet and am looking around online for what races I can play as and what class I would like

Welcome, Jacketch! I'll be playing a multiclassed sorcerer/warlock, but don't let that deter you from playing any kind of spellcaster you want. My character isn't what you'd call a typical sorcerer. He's an actor and has never been the adventuring type, and I chose his spell list based on his origin. Less "will this protect me while I destroy my enemies" and more "how will this help me on the stage?" Besides, there are so many ways to take a character that even two of the same class could seem like night and day in their execution.

I was thinking of making a Half-Elf Fighter, I like the idea of him being an ex-knight who lost everything in the fall of the empire and now he is searching for new meaning. My main troubles come with figuring out my starting HP, as well as what (if any) features/abilities I might have. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated!
