OOC and Offtopic, Welcome and Whatnot. Say hi!

I'm Kayn. I'm your (*looks at the game rules for what the term is for the person running a game of Masks is called*) GM for this game. Second game being run on Gamers Plane, first game of Masks.

Most of you know me already but for those who don't:

I'm Jabes...in my forties...from Manila, Philippines (GMT+8). Besides the time zone difference I also keep odd work hours as I am a chef running my own cake business. We like making geeky cakes. Here are just a few D&D themed ones.

I was introduced to RPG's 30 years ago (specifically AD&D) and to this day I still play with the same group of guys, my best friends. I've been on GP since early 2015. It's been fun trying out new game systems and character ideas that would never have seen the light of day if it weren't for this play format.

Whenever I play I try to do something new. Sometimes that means something a little unconventional, but other times that just means something I myself have never tried before. I love PbtA but I've never played a supers game, so I'm really excited! Thanks for running this, Kayn!

Hey Folks,

thirtylives here, hailing from Illinois, USA. This will be my first* game here as I just joined GP yesterday! Never played PbtA but I watched some videos and it looks like a bunch of fun. I have a roleplaying background in AD&D, WW and other d20 stuff. These days I do a lot of videogaming and at this moment I am loving my new Nintendo Switch.

Thanks for GMing Kayn!

Hi Thirty, and welcome to GP! I hail from NY and I’m a veteran of this site- I play in a lot of games with Jabes, in fact. I first played D&D 3.5 ages ago before getting into PbtA (specifically DW) before falling down the D&D 5e hole more recently. I am in way too many games but I’m not gonna stop!

Other than gaming, I work in television and am a mom to 2 little humanoid monsters, one of whom just turned 5 months old. I look forward to the day I can introduce them to rpgs. You know, once they can read, etc.

Let us know if you have any questions! We’re a friendly bunch. Promise!

Heh, thanks Moofsalot, everyone has been incredibly nice so far.

I also have two male younglings who are kicking our butts right now (4 1/2 and 1 1/2 years old) and I used to work in corporate video/event production. My older boy has discovered Mario and he is loving it!

The Switch is great. Some of the people I know from the net and have met a few times IRL had a launch title for it called Snipperclips which is the most adorable cooperative puzzle game ever. I need to find time to play it.

Intro about PBtA and why I love it enough to have three games going on the site:

PBtA is a fun family of games. You pretty much have all the rules for playing the game on your selected Playbook and the Basic Moves sheet; every roll is 2d6+Whatever (in this game it's normally the relevant Label, but there's a few flat rolls or things mixed up when it comes to the Nova or Doomed). A 10+ is an outright success, a 7-9 is normally a success with a downside or two (these are both called Hits), while a 6 or less is a Miss.

The Moves are both descriptive and prescriptive; these aren't skill checks or saves you're making but moments of the narrative you're trying to influence and have been deemed mechanically important enough to be left to the dice. There isn't a "push the guy into the wall" check; instead it's an automatic thing you do unless it's going to trigger one of the Moves; it could be you're unleashing your powers, or directly engaging a threat as part of this. Or it could be the fictional dressing to Piercing the Mask or Provoke them through intimidating. In Rosethorn's case it could literally be the thing you're using to Be the Monster. Or it could just be something you want to do idly as part of the story with no mechanical payoff and is just a funny aside thing you want to use to roleplay with so long as that's all you want to do with it.

The reverse is true; to do any of the Moves, you need to do what it's saying. You can't just say "I'm going to just look around the place but I'm not sticking my neck out or anything" and expect it to yield a result more than "Yep, it's a building". If you wanted more, you'd need to directly try to Assess the Situation.

Unlike other games, PBtA doesn't have the GM roll any dice; The GM generally only makes a Move against you when you roll a Miss or when things are getting boring (and unlike most other games that have a little section saying to the GM "hey, do what you like!", pbta strictly asks the GMs to trust the rules, be fair, and not pull too many things out of nowhere). Likewise, players tend to take the narrative lead and the GM puts things up as and when you engage with them.

I personally feel it's a great thing for forum games. Low number of dice rolls, most of the information out there on the net, lots of narrative control for everyone involved. And now there seems to be a pbta flavour for every genre.

Well I live in Tennessee and while I've only been on Gamer's Plane for a few months, I've been roleplaying in general for 33 years and online on forums or via email for 20. I had the pleasure and privilege of running a D&D game for my sons (ages 11 and 8) and several of their friends. Many skeletons were smashed by hammers and a good time was had by all.

D&D is where I started and when you want to hit an orc with a mace nothing else quite scratches that itch. Having said that, I really enjoy all of the various indie games out there and was pleased to find a forum where they are embraced.

Greetings!

I live around the Los Angeles area. I have yet to have a mini-me. I work odd jobs so my schedule is whack. I discovered TTRPGs via DD 3.X way back then but fell out as I graduated. Went back in to the rabbit hole after 5e went out and have been chucking dice ever since. I am quite new to GP and PBP in general so I tend to suck but I am learning and working on it, willing and able.

Hi y'all, I used to be fairly active on this site(including running a Masks game of my own), but life happened, I had to take a much longer break than I wanted to, and I'm looking to get back into things with this game.

I started on RPGs about five years ago with Wild Talents(another superhero system) and moved to D&D after that, which I played pretty much exclusively until I was introduced to Masks by some Twitter friends. Since then I've fallen down a bit of a rabbit hole and have been listening to podcasts of it until a game opened up that I could join. Anyone who knows me knows my two greatest joys are RPGs and the superhero genre.

Looking forward to playing with you guys!

Welcome back!!

Glad to be gaming with everyone!

Hey folks, since I've never played this system before would you mind dropping some tips/tricks in spoiler tags if you are doing something that I should know about in the game thread? I've read the docs and watched some videos but every little bit would help me =)

I think you'll be fine thirtylives. Since generally these games are fiction first, don't worry about taking some narrative authority with your posts for anything that's not covered by the Moves you need to make; the post I made earlier in this thread goes through my views on the game system.

As you've probably seen, people edit their posts after the dice rolls if they've got to state what happens as part of the result for their moves being rolled and I'm fine with that being the thing that happens. We'll let you know if something's up, but even so these games are pretty loose on the rules anyway so don't worry too much

Sounds good Kayn, I'll follow my gut (and my teammates)!

I don't know about you guys but I enjoy giving my characters theme songs. Sadly I have yet to find a suitable song for Quasar. This song is dedicated to Rosethorn and Whimsy. :-)

Is Quasar able to see what is going on inside the shop from his position outside of it? Or at least see the treant/gang boss?
Jan 16, 2018 9:37 am
Yeah, so far everything is obvious and open to everyone.
Jan 26, 2018 11:36 am
I owe everyone an apology for completely dropping the ball here. I'm sorry, it won't happen again. I've posted to the story thread, and will be consistent from now on.

The day I was hoping would never come has arrived: Due to recent changes in my life (some good, others not so much) I am going to be forced to drastically cut back on my game involvement, and that includes withdrawing from this game.

Thank you for the opportunity to play in your game, Kayn. See you guys around!
