DMJ says:
However, for the sake of flow and cool scene, I'll say that since all of this is happening within the same few seconds (R3), Thorn does the Athletics of the climb/jump just as the fog is setting in. Maybe his vision is hindered, but not completely blocked. So he takes the Disadvantage, but it isn't auto-fail as described above.
OOC:
Very generous of you, J; thanks. My bad in not fully reviewing blinded condition.

Does Ivor spot Valates or otherwise get a cursory look at the situation on the enemy ship before the fog obscures everything?
Ivor looks across the deck of the ship, barely getting a glimpse of the layout before his vision is lost completely.

The middle deck has a central lower level sunken down a few feet with benches where rowers sit, so that oars are down closer to the water line. The main deck has two walkways around the central sunken section, one along each side, connecting the two large high deck open areas at bow and stern.

Strangely, Valates is seen at the very back of the boat separated from the others, on the stern deck near the railing. He has a helmet on now, but Ivor recognizes him from his Korvaran style armor and shield.

Ivor cannot quite get a count of remaining opponents, but estimates at least 10 at the midship and stern areas (and 4 are known to be here at the bow deck). Then his vision is overtaken completely. He cannot see further out, but he can see the two Heshbaans that are hand-to-hand range and trying to kill him.

Required Action: Ivor roll Initiative vs. bow deck Heshbaans.
Note: close melee combatants will not suffer Disadvantage to Attack roles. All combatants are jointly operating within the fog.

Initiative tie. Initiative Mod is the same. Next level tie-breaker is Level or HD. Thorn wins Initiative. Take Action when ready.

As the fog descends, Ivor realizes ha hasn't got his trident in hand yet. Fuck. In the moment that he surveyed his surroundings he noted where the weapon was, stuck in a wounded Myrmidon laid out on the deck, but who knows if he can get to it before the Heshbaan crawls away or tosses it aside and in this infernal fog?! He'll have to move fast!

As the fog sets in, Kray sheathes his blade and moves toward the railing, feeling his way along until he is at the edge of the fog.

Not narrating because I'm not sure it'll fly. The idea is to get clear vision and then make the jump. Going to roll Athletics if it can happen this turn.

The trident cannot be seen unless you commit full Action to getting down low to see close to the floor and looking for it using hands to feel for it. That would take a DC16 Perception at Disadvantage.

Still have option to draw net or secondary weapon as the "cost free" part of the round Action of course.

OOC:
Sorry, Ez. See here where I detailed the limitations of trying the climb. Only 2 people could get to the narrow spacing during this short time span. Ivor and Thorn already gobbled up the 2 queue slots for R3.

I'm not against shifting to Round 4, will detail that in next few posts, but remember: Kray, Maeriks, Thorn, Ivor will all begin Round 4 with Blindness Condition. Any attempt by Maeriks or Kray to board the Korvaran will be an auto-failure on the STR Athletics in Round 4 because of the effects of Blinded condition.

With that in mind, keep all of those Lucky resources. I think. I'm going to ignore those rolls for now, and we should understand that Kray tried to make it up to the back rail but was so disoriented and felt extremely off-balance as he considered the climb. He could have know that he would fail if he tried to make the jump, so I think he would have stopped unless you tell me otherwise.
And in that case, he would make the attempt, spend all of the Lucky resources, and still fail.

Reconsider what Action you would take with Kray at the back stern railing buried in the fog but avoiding the heat of the fire.

OOC:
This is thick fog. You can see people right in front of you. No Disadvantage to either person if you are both in the fog and adjacent to one another.

But it is difficult to see much unless you are right up on something. Tough to see what is on the ground at your feet, but these guys did have some ropes out in this area trying to board. I'll say to find a rope is a DC 10 Perception at Disadvantage. Then to loop and wrangle it up and throw it effectively (while leaving the right part of it on the Korvaran) would be a DC 10 DEX check (no Disadvantage). This combo would take a full Action for the Round.

Now if you tell me Thorn had a PHB 50' coil of hemp rope actually hanging off of his utility belt or over the shoulder staged for quick draw and cast throughout this river cruise, I would smirk and chuckle to myself and then say that it would be possible to draw and cast that back over with no requirements for rolls, but it would burn Action for the Round. That rope would then be referred to as "The Bat-Rope."

Oxbox says:

Bryn tries to fire an arrow into the fog cloud targeting Valates.
OOC:
From what I had pictured last, Bryn had made some effort to stack and climb boxes for higher visibility, steadying on the central mast to get an overwatch look as best possible. Bryn is the only person on the Keshet outside of the fog. This brings his line of sight up just enough to see over parts of the rail of the Korvaran.

The front 1/3 of the Korvaran is covered in fog, just as the complete stern end of the Keshet.

Bryn can see the back end of the Korvaran. The middle is difficult to see because of the lower deck section, but the back of the Korvaran is has the top level deck. Bryn can spot Valates because he is at the very back of the boat for some reason!

Such a shot would be extremely difficult at that angle. With the higher railing at the stern, Valates is considered to be behind 3/4 cover, BUT the shot is NOT taken at any Disadvantage. There is no fog at the back of the Korvaran.

When I look at Bryn's rolls, his first roll which applies is a natural 20.

Longbow Arrow at Range against Valates: Hit

Making an extremely unlikely shot, Bryn flies an arrow right at Valates. The Korvaran mercenary captain seems to throw his shield up just in the nick of time and dives for cover.

Progress Update, Transition to R4

We are moving into Round 4, I guess already into it to a degree.

On the Korvaran

Ivor has been combo Shoved against by a Raider and Myrmidon. He needs to Athletics Resist to see result, and then can take Action immediately after.

Thorn can take whatever Action he wants before his immediate opponent, a Hesh Raider.

Both Ivor and Thorn suffer Blinded condition. Melee Attacks to/fro opponents with you in the fog have no Adv/Disadv.

On the Keshet

Kray is at the back rail of the Keshet.

Maeriks is near Kray, further towards mid-ship.

Both Kray and Maeriks have Blinded Condition.

Reminder: Any Ability Checks in R4 that require sight will automatically fail. STR Athletics to board the Korvaran requires sight.

Bryn is outside of the Fog Cloud, on the Keshet, standing atop some stacked crates and steadied by the mast.

Developing

The two boats continue to shift, bounce, bang and drag against one another. The Keshet continues to pivot towards port. The Korvaran continues to drive forward at a higher speed.

Bryn (only) can see the first glimpse of the fact that the fog seems to be gliding along with the Korvaran. As players we can understand that this is because Maeriks centered the effect on the fire, which was on the port bow of the Korvaran. The characters would likely not understand this yet at all. Those inside of the fog would not notice any change yet. Bryn might see the trend that the fog is gradually being pulled away, which will likely mean that the Keshet could be fog-free in the next couple of rounds as the Korvaran moves by and the Keshet rolls off to the side.

Ivor
R4

The full effort of the two defensively stacked Heshbaans is too much for Ivor to overcome as he tries to get his bearings blind after the climb. The big Dannein rolls off the rail into the fog. He crashes down hard on the deck of the Keshet, narrowly missing Kray.

On the way down, Ivor's foot is hooked onto one of the raider's shield and it is torn from his hand as Ivor's weight falls away. The shield rattles onto the Keshet deck in the fog.
OOC:
A dual clothesline over the top rope WOULD be a perfect fit, Jabes. None to be found so far unfortunately.
Maybe now since you are outside of the ring, you can pick up a chair or a trashcan or a sledge hammer from under the ring before you return by the end of the 10-count.
Dec 18, 2017 4:00 pm
Snarling as he picks himself up, Ivor looks up into the fog-shrouded prow of the Korvaran. He says to Kray, "I saw your friend up there. Back near the stern. You keep insulting him with that pretty accent of yours, keep their attention this way while I go for a little swim and shank 'em up their arses." Then the Dannein seal hunter drops over the rail and slips into the water feet-first, making as little of a splash as he can, and starts swimming towards the Korvaran's stern.
