"Thorn! Hold fast!"

Krays shout is muted. Distant. Thorn's grip on the bronze blade is slippery. He is shaking slightly. In the gloom before him, he sees the dogs being slashed and pierced.

Another voice. The physician, moving behind and to his left.

"Can you fight? The Howler comes. We must stand against it..." The rest is lost to him. Time seems to slow.

He blinks away crimson droplets. Phlegm and blood collect at the back of his throat and he spits grimly.

His fingers tighten around the blade's hilt.

Relax a bit, boy. You limit your control with a grip like that, and you'll tire faster. No way to fight.

His index and thumb relax a bit. He gives the sword a swing.

"I can fight."

Thorn will attack the first enemy to come within melee range.

Thorn resets himself, recovering from the brief loss of consciousness.

Like everyone, his eyes are drawn to the north hallway, where a terrible growl rumbles out from the darkness.

Since his time in Mozamyah and the Borg Rhiac, Kray had witnessed both strangeness and the supernatural, the likes of which he used to believe were only stories meant to frighten children.

Fates be damned. What now?

"Wake up, gentlemen! We've got incoming!"

His gaze turned toward the darkness, Kray listened and watched. Shield relaxed and low, Judgement loose in his grip, he steeled himself for the impending assault.

HY is dead so Kray will delay his turn until Mystery arrives on scene.

Kray readies the line to confront whatever emerges from the darkness.

Carcasses are strewn about at the edge of the hallway - stabbed dogs, the wretch slave with the cracked skull. A bubbly, bloody liquid is foaming out of mouth of the fallen hound covered in powder

The light is dim. The monster yet unseen, but it is close.

"Beware!", Namtur shouts. "Naram may accompany The Howler. He is treacherous!"

Namtur drops his shield and steps forward. With the free hand he grabs the downed alpha hound's body by the scruff of the neck and snatches it up. He turns quickly and carries the bulky carcass away one-handed, moving steadily back towards the south end of the room.

As he moves, wisps of smoke begin to swirl out of the dead dog's mouth. And wounds.

The Howler

First there is a glow. A light emerges within the darkness of the hall. A circle of fire, about chest level to a man standing.

The beast steps forward in the next instant and it becomes clear that the fire is glowing from within - from within the terrible monster's maw.

The howler steps forward into the torchlight and bringing its own internal flame with itself.

The Howler's shoulders are over four feet high. It's body stretches nearly eight feet. A massive maw of teeth. Sharp towering spines on its head and back. Thick, muscled legs ending in heavy claws clacking against the stone floor. And the red-orange glow of internal fire boiling within, swelling out in light in The Howler King's neck, throat sac, and open gullet.

When the monster roars out it is an onslaught not only against the senses, but also the mind. It is like an unnatural sound from the lowest depths, beyond the world - beyond nature - something that should not be.

As it roars, the Howler keeps moving forward, like death approaching.

Required Action, All PCs: WIS Save, DC 14. Failure results in Frightened Condition. While Frightened, victim is Incapacitated.

I think you guys who are Special Tea drinkers have a bonus Mod to this. Maybe +1. If anyone has reference, share it for others.

The Howler

The Howler launches forward in a burst of violent speed. In a sudden change of direction it shifts from a forward advance, leaping left - straight at Bryn. The Dannein, usually rakish in his audacity, is frozen with fright.

Attack Bryn
Target Frightened, susceptible to psychic damage if hit


Barreling over and past Bryn, the great beast turns another sharp direction change, surging back to its right. Kray too is caught in the grip of dread that has overtaken all of his usual reflexes.

In the blink of an eye the fearsome beast sets upon Akkeen, clinching the bleeding man by the face in its jaws and slinging his limp body around like a rag doll. After quick violent thrashes, Akkeen’s jaw is torn completely off. The shredded body separates and is hurled in the air, rolling and skidding to a stop. The dead man's arms and legs are flung wild and land in awkward rests that show no signs of life.

A flash of flame bursts out of the Howlers teeth as it snaps its blooded jaws together and then barks. The sound echoes like a shockwave through the stone chamber.

In another bound the dog monster lopes torwards Namtur, who is moving at a snail's pace by comparison.

Full Movement

The Howler, King of the Hel Hounds, belts out another terrible roar. The air in front of him seems to bend and wave from the heat that projects out from the monster's gaping maw lined with razor sharp teeth.
