Elam yells out loud, motioning with his hands. Though he still holds swords in each, the signal message is clear: Fall back. Get away.

He shouts to his brothers...

We can do readied actions, now right? ...

Answering this here in case the question was still out there. Yes, Ready Action can be used as normal. It consumes a Reaction for the Round.

Dammit. Forgot it burns a Reaction. Thorn is still in the ZHPS with no Reaction available, so I guess he's a sitting duck.

OOC:
Nah, I think we can make an exception on this one with some appeal to common sense. I think Thorn can hold and attack if he is attacked.

Maybe he couldn't do a quick unexpected reaction that was taxing, like OA or a Sentinel extra criteria Hit or a Parry or something, but I think Reaction use on Ready is fine.

Bryn takes hold of the plank bow, makes a quick educated guess on how to load it, braces the weapon downward, and pulls back the string. When the taunt string hits the catch lever, it holds momentarily, but then the string springs back forward with such force that it tears the inner catch and trigger mechanism out of the top of the stock plank.

The plank bow was already damaged from a previous failure. Now it is completely ruined.
OOC:
Crazy. No time to find the link now, but Akkeen already cracked that plank bow with another Natural 1 critical fail previously. Another Natural 1 now. It's official: that prototype is fucked!
Time for Engineering Change Order redesign. Ha!

Elam's message was clear enough for Kray as he stepped back from the living inferno before him, scorching heat pushing him away instinctively.

As he turned, glancing to his left, he saw Thorn, at the ready bu barely hanging on.

Need some cover.

A sense of dire urgency catapulted Kray into action as he loped toward Uburatu, dropping his shield on the way. At the beast man's corpse, Kray snatched up the bronze body shield and made his way to Thorn, placing himself between his battle-brother and the conflagration to be.

Kneeling down behind the shield now, directly in front of Thorn, Kray finally slips his arm into the straps as he calls to him. "Cover!"

Kray will be just NW of Thorn. Going for 3/4 cover here with the shield.

The burst of flame knocks Trece unsteady, however, he presses on. Next the torrent of flame knocks him back a few steps, he presses on. Finally, the hellish beast grabs him in it's maw sending him to the floor.

Soon, but now is not your time, my friend. Tell me, why do you fight?
"Freedom." Trece staggers back onto his feet, staring down the inferno.
Tell me, who do you fight for?
"You, my only friend." He stabs outwards, his arm thrusting through the flames.
Then you will see me. Soon, but now is not your time.

At an incredible pace; one, two, three more stabs followed by a swift uppercut. Trece's arm pulls back, peeling and charred from the flames.

Kray does a controlled break contact and falls back. He procures Uburatu's shield shield from the battlefield, the best resource he can to defend against anticipated blast damage.

Kray stands with Thorn and looks on as the surreal monstrosity that is the Howler makes a final assault.

Trece steps forward against death incarnate. His enemy, his final opponent, is a killing machine bent on his destruction.

The great beast launches forward, throwing all of its weight and doom into the attack. It means to shred this frail man like a sheep, rip him asunder and burn his internals to ash.

But Trece moves to the side and the white cast iron knife dives in, stabbing into the left jaw, into the tissue that is already degraded by the strange necrosis. The spoon knife hooks behind the back corner of the jaw bone. The follow-through of the blow pulls the monster's head and maw out wide and away as Trece shifts a step to the side.

Before the Hound King can steer back, the next strike is already splitting down on top of the exposed left eye socket. The bone, already weakened, cracks and collapses.

A white flash of light and the Howler loses muscle control. The great beast stumbles down. Its front feet slide out from under it. Trece's uppercut connects right under the jaw as the beast falls.

Blindness. The flaming demon is stunned and flailing now.

But Trece is catching on fire. The flames roll off of the Howler's shoulders and engulf Trece's upper body. The Seetan is ignited and burning, yet still he stands his ground to continue his attack.

The next strike with the pin knife spoon is overhanded, falling down to connect at the back of the skull, catching the bone and tilting the head forward. Trece pulls back and drives the Helish dog to the stone floor, jaw first in a heavy crash.

Arching back high again, Trece brings the white cast iron weapon down at full speed, this time aiming at the top center of the skull.

When the spoon knife hits, it cracks the thick plane of bone and breaks through, piercing into the brain matter. The sharpened handle sinks in its full length, leaving only the oval spoon end exposed.

All movements cease. The Howler's legs fall out from under it. Its heavy body drops straight down to the floor, inert and lifeless.

The flesh of the beast continues to blacken even as the fire continues to burn.

But the Howler does not explode. It is crackling and melting, but its flame is no longer growing towards a final burst. It is waning like a dying fire now, denied its final act of destruction.

Trece stands above the ruined carcass. Feet apart evenly, shoulders square - the Seetan is a tower of perfect stability.

But he is covered in fire. Only now does the damage begin to set upon him. His senses are beginning to fail.

First come, first served now. This fight is over, the King has fallen in the Endgame, but a small window for the last few entries on the line. Limited time for that, and then we'll turn it over to Hyp to close it down for us.

The flaming crippled hound drags itself a few more feet and then bursts into flaming sludge. It is a flash of light and heat, but no one is close enough to sustain injury.

The other sickened hound stumbles aimlessly, still coughing out foam and fluid.
Feb 13, 2019 7:29 am
Namtur moves back to cover Iasu, but watches as the Seetan vanquishes the Howler.

Not fully convinced that the dying carcass won't explode, Namtur commits and moves in quickly. He makes it in time to catch Trece as he falls. The devil-man carries the fatally injured warrior away even as he is still burning.

Namtur lies Trece on the floor and tries his best to put out the fire, using the Seetan's own cloaked robe to swat and smother out the flame.

After a few moments, he is able to quell the fires.

Trece though is severely burned and smoke is rising up from his charred tissue, especially around his arms and upper torso. Namtur scans the injuries once more and is the first one close enough to see just how bad the damage is.

The giant devil-man is moved to stillness. He knows that there is nothing he can do to help the man now.

Namtur is usually slow to speak, a man of few words. For most of his life, he has lived out a vow to never speak Otessite, but he remembers Elam saying that the Seetan spoke it as his native tongue.

Namtur makes it quick. He leans down close to Trece, looks him in the eyes, and speaks quietly so that only Trece can hear.

With that, Namtur stands and walks away.
