Each of you get a call.

The phone rings, it's the dean of the college,
"Are you listening to the radio? Did you hear the lies? He must be on to something big and is trying to keep us busy with the legal ramifications of what he just announced. I need you and several others to get right on this. I need you down there immediately. I'll have the Hudson at the library all fueled up waiting on you, stop by my office before you head out to meet the rest of the team. I have to go, I bet the lawyers will be calling anytime now."

The phone clicks and goes dead.

Any last minute equipment checks or items to pack?
Feb 5, 2018 3:44 pm
As a matter of fact, Barry had been listening to the radio. Two years Stateside and he still didn't understand baseball's appeal, but he gathered this Babe Ruth character was some sort of big deal – a kind of American Don Bradman, if The Don could be thought to suffer any comparisons. Barry thought he couldn't.

He gathered at once that something important must be going on. To Barry, big city Americans always seemed to be in a violent rush, but he had never heard the Dean use quite that tone before. 'Immediately' meant, well, immediately, so he marked the page in his copy of King James' Daemonologie and began packing. Fuelling up the Hudson implied some sort of journey, and anyone who grew up in the Outback knows better than to travel unprepared. Food, water, rope, light – just the essentials. The dean had mentioned legal trouble. Well, Barry was no lawyer but a 12-gauge is a powerful legal argument anywhere in the world.

On the walk from the dorm to the dean's office, he racked his brain for information about Professor Whitman's work.
Feb 6, 2018 1:26 am
You know that he had been working in the library until he found some old map about the lost colony of Roanoke and he applied and received a grant to travel and find out what he could.

The dean mentioned a folder, it should have all the information you might need, at least all they know.
Feb 6, 2018 6:58 am
Howard groans. He clicks open his briefcase and throws in some files he believes may be pertinent. The dean's office isn't too far away. Just a brisk walk. Howard double checks to make sure he has his note pad and writing utensils. The briefcase snaps shut, and he whisks it out the door.
Feb 6, 2018 8:53 pm
Larry had just sat down and opened bottle of Schlitz when the phone rang, he finished it not long after hanging up. He says quietly to himself, Of course I was listening to the radio, though I cant believe the Babe went dry tonight. He sighs then shouts, Robert, can you drive me back down to the university? Apparently the dean needs a little muscle. Sounds like some egghead got himself into some trouble. Robert, Larry's brother, begrudgingly tells him to take the truck, he won't be needing it tonight. Larry opens another bottle and drinks it down as he gathers his things, What in the hell has this man got me into this time, he thinks while drinking, guess I'll be getting some over time, I suppose. Larry takes a moment to fill his flask before driving Roberts truck back to the university and back to work.

Marv hangs up the phone and stands quietly for a few seconds before he breaks out into a smile. Of course he'd been listening to the radio. That's what people did at this time of day, right? At least, in his home...

Marv walks quickly to the door to his father's office and knocks before cracking open the door. A cloud of cigarette smoke reaches out towards him, tickling his nose. "Hey, Dad?" he says. His father looks up from the card game, the rings on his fingers catching the light.

"Yeah?" he mumbles around the cigarette between his lips.

"I'm heading out. Don't know when I'll be back," Marv says.

His father reaches up to grab the cigarette between two fingers and takes a long drag on it. As he blows out the smoke, he stubs it out in an ashtray. With a raised eyebrow, he says, "All right. Have fun. Call when you get where you're going." He coughs. "And kiss your mother before you leave."

Marv smiles at his dad. "You got it." With that, he shuts the door and goes to find his mother. Once that's all done, he throws on his jacket and jumps into the seat of his Model J and turns it on. The engine roars satisfyingly as he speeds to the dean's office.
Feb 7, 2018 11:03 pm
Barry arrives first, shortly followed by the rest. The dean is sitting in his high back chair with a cigar in one hand and a drink in the other, "Thank you all for coming so quickly. The file is thee on the desk under the keys to the Hudson."

The file here
Feb 8, 2018 3:52 am
Marv pockets the keys to the Hudson unconsciously and picks up the folder, thumbing through the contents. After he's finished, he hands the file to whomever's on his right side.

"So... is anyone still at the dig site? I assume that's where you're sending us."
Feb 8, 2018 6:49 am
Howard grabs the file and quickly peruses the contents. He has been following the story through "The Courier" and will not accept this tripe about the curse of Roanoak. "Who is this Chad Wilkens? What right does he have to spread these falsities about 'curses' and the erroneous beliefs of savages!?... What really happened to Professor Whitmer?"
He eyes the man scratching at the outline of a flask on a breast pocket, then his gaze moves to the half-empty decanter of whiskey the dean seems to be drinking from. Howard pours a hefty amount into the first glass, and then a moderate amount into the second. He hands the first to the dipsomaniac, and shoots the second down on his own.

Larry sits down quietly as the others talk, Probably best to let the eggheads do the talkin' he thinks as he lights a cigarette. Are you going to offer any of that to anyone else, doc? he asks, directing the question to Howard.
Feb 8, 2018 3:48 pm
"Good idea, mate. I'll take some too," Barry says with a friendly nod at Larry. "and a squiz at the file there, since we're sharing. Curses are what you could call a particular interest of mine."
Feb 8, 2018 11:40 pm
"We have lost contact with them. We sent a messenger there three weeks ago and he hasn't come back. Help yourselves." He sweeps his hand over the whiskey and pulls out another bottle, "This could end badly for the university, we have to clear it up and reclaim some of our investment."
Feb 9, 2018 3:25 am
As the drinks are being poured, Marv waves off a glass. "None for me, thanks. I find it takes the fun out of the drive."

As he looks around at this motley crew, he nods to himself. "Ok, so we just need to go out there, figure out what's going on and let you know? Is there something you're note telling us?"
Feb 9, 2018 9:19 pm
Larry grabs a glass of whiskey and takes a sip Damn that's good. Rich bastard probably has a case of this.

People are dead. I'm not an incredibly religious man, but these accidents do not seem very accidental. That or it's the worlds biggest coincidence. Larry throws back the drink and gets up to pour himself another one.
Feb 9, 2018 9:51 pm
"Everything I know is in the file, he was very secretive. The only other information I have is how much money we have tied up in this little endevour."
Feb 10, 2018 1:57 am
Marv laughs at that. "I imagine it's a not insignificant amount. Otherwise, we wouldn't be here." He shoves his hands in his pockets. "By the way, what's our take?"
Feb 10, 2018 2:17 am
Howard places the file on the dean's desk with in reach of whoever else might want to thumb through it. He rolls his eyes at the thought of religion or some other hocus-pocus-hullabaloo having anything to do with this. But Larry does make an interesting point, maybe the accidents weren't so accidental. Howard wonders if there are any rival groups out there that are willing to kill for what Professor Whitmer is trying to cover up, and, for that matter, exactly how much money is "tied up in this"?
OOC:
As a professor in the Anthropology department, I'd like to figure out what I know of the professor's work and if I know of anyone who would be willing to kill concerning the professor's work.

"The hudson's glove box has an envelope in it with $6000 to cover costs and whatever is left, is yours to keep."
OOC:
It really is unclear, other than colony camp sites what he has really found, relics from the time would be worth some money, but not really enough to kill over. The biggest prize would come from your name being attached to a discovery like this.
Feb 11, 2018 2:12 am
Marv nods with a good-natured grimace. "Sounds about right..." He looks around at the others. "Any more questions? I think I'm good to go. I've got a direction to head, a task to complete and wheels to get me there."
Feb 11, 2018 6:27 am
"This Professor Whitmer bloke, what's he like? In personality terms, I mean," Barry asks. "Knowing a bit about him might give us a leg up on things."

"He was always the quiet type, kept to his books and studies, but he seemed to have an air of confidence about him the last time we talked."
Feb 11, 2018 5:58 pm
Howard paces as he poses the questions he is pondering. "Where is the Roanoke colony? I would like to learn more about the people and customs of the area." He pauses as he turns to continue pacing. "The reporter seemed to be a rather professional journalist, I wonder what more we could learn from his field notes. Perhaps we can phone his family to learn more about what was really going on in the camp." He looks at the rest of the group to gauge how patient they might be in preparation and research Howard feels he needs. "Dean, I do sense the urgency in finding your answers. Exactly how long do we have to get back to you with the information you need?"
Feb 14, 2018 1:08 am
"Um, yesterday?"
Feb 14, 2018 3:41 am
Marv barks a laugh and swats Howard on the shoulder. "I guess it's time to go then, no?" Without waiting for an answer, he walks out the door, making his way toward the Hudson and their journey, chuckling along the way.
OOC:
Keeper, could Marv take his vehicle with him? Is it OK for him to have the vehicle? He can leave it here if that works best for the story.
Feb 14, 2018 4:31 am
"Has anyone checked Whitmer's office?" Barry says. "I know you want us out there quick, but it wouldn't be much of a detour, and there might be something in his papers that gives us a clue about what's going on."
Feb 14, 2018 2:46 pm
Larry throws back his remaining whiskey and coughs a little then stands, waiting for an answer about Whitmer's office.
Feb 14, 2018 5:18 pm
"I agree, let's check his office while the others pack the Hudson." Howard zips to Professor Whitmer's office, searches for anything interesting, and takes what he finds with him, probably putting it into his briefcase. He then stops by his own office, grabs his travel bag containing a change of clothes and toiletries, leaves the office, places his travel bag into the trunk, and jumps into the back seat of the car with his brief case on his lap.
Feb 14, 2018 9:57 pm
Larry goes with Howard and searches the room as well.

OOC:
It's his prized possession, so he'll drive it.
Getting close to the Hudson, Marv stops, spinning the keys on a finger as he stares at the vehicle in contemplation. After awhile, he seems to come to a decision and turns to whomever followed him out to the vehicle. "Here, you can drive the Hudson. I'd rather take my car."
Feb 15, 2018 12:56 pm
After searching the office, Larry makes his way outside. Not me. I don't drive.
Feb 16, 2018 6:34 am
"I'd rather not, except as a last resort," Barry says. "I can't get used to driving on the wrong bloody side of the road."
Feb 16, 2018 6:52 pm
Howard opens his brief case and pulls out his driving gloves. "I will be happy to take the wheel. Driving reminds me of going on safari with father." Howard continues to fondly reminisce as he walks around to the driver side of the car. "He would have me chase the beasts a little. He was not at all proficient in shooting a moving target, but it only takes a short run for a lion or a rhinoceros to give up a long sprint." He sits behind the wheel, and smiles at the others as if he is about to reveal something they should find quite interesting, "Herd animals however, are quite a different sport. Just take aim at the general center of the lot, and with a few shots you are bound to get something splendid for your trophy." As he finishes, he smiles at Marv and reaches his hand out to receive the keys.
Feb 17, 2018 2:47 am
Marv smiles and drops the keys into Dr. Mellon's outstretched hand. "That sounds like it could be exciting."
Feb 18, 2018 1:32 pm
As Doctor Mellon circles the car, he is startled by a large, unwelcoming figure, already sitting in the driver's seat. The window is open and billows of sour, hand-rolled cigarette smoke roll out. The blonde-haired tough behind the wheel regards Dr. Mellon coolly.

"We already have a driver. Don't we, Hopkins?"

He nods toward the professor just approaching the car, delivering a meaningful, barely perceptible nod.
Feb 18, 2018 10:15 pm
"Excellent." Howard takes his original position in the back seat of the car.
Feb 19, 2018 11:43 am
Larry's sighs a bit as he sees Magnus, Oh heya, Dutch. Didn't expect to see you wrapped up in this. Are we ready to go?
Feb 19, 2018 12:13 pm
Barry walks over to Marv's car. "You taking passengers, mate?"
Feb 19, 2018 1:22 pm
Larry opens the front passenger door and sits down, eyeing Magnus. He puts his duffle bag on the floor.
Feb 20, 2018 5:22 am
Marv nods at Barry with a smile. "Got room for one. You're it." He motions for Barry to get in as he starts up the engine. He grips the steering wheel, eager to get on the road, taking pleasure in the way the engine rumbles through his hands.

"Are we all here?" he calls back to the other vehicle.
OOC:
By my count, all PCs are here and ready to go. Am I missing anyone?

Feb 21, 2018 12:20 pm
"Ya" exhales Magnus, grimacing slightly.

He inserts the keys and starts revving the engine, with aggression.

"This ol' pig needs a proper cleaning," he comments.
Feb 21, 2018 2:02 pm
"Geez! You hear that?" Barry says to Marv. "I reckon our mate's lost – thinks he's on the race track."
Feb 21, 2018 10:03 pm
Marv laughs, good-naturedly, "Well, if he's wanting to race, he doesn't stand a chance." Never one to let an opportunity like this pass him by, Marv starts up his vehicle and revs the engine in response.

Carbon blows out the hudson's exhaust and the smoke dissipates as she purrs like a kitten.

The road heading to the spot marked on your map is paved, then becomes pothole filled before turning to stone. The road turns left and becomes a mud trail, not frequently traveled. The road comes to an end up ahead and a vehicle is pulled off the side in a small grassy area. All four tires on it are flat and the passenger door is open.
Feb 26, 2018 7:36 am
"Oi, what's that about? Wonder if it's Whitmer's..." Barry says to Marv, having spotted the parked vehicle. "You reckon the car'll be right on that trail, or should we head out on foot? Wouldn't want to end up like that poor bugger."
Feb 26, 2018 10:45 pm
Marv pulls over next to the stopped vehicle, shutting off the engine. "I'd rather not take her any farther in, if we can avoid it. But,
this isn't a good sight. Let's see what's going on."
He opens up the door and pops out of the vehicle. Pocketing the keys, he moves over to investigate the open car door.

"Hello? Anyone in there?" he calls.
Feb 27, 2018 12:49 am
No answer comes from inside the car. The door has moss and mildew growing on it, like it has been open for sometime and through a few storms.
Feb 27, 2018 1:07 am

Larry stands a few feet from the car while Dutch searches it. He lights a cigarette and asks, You find anything in there, Dutch? He walks to the back of the car and tries to open the trunk. See if you can find a release for the trunk, Larry shouts up to the others inspecting the cab of the car.
Feb 27, 2018 3:34 pm
Barry walks carefully over to the car, examining the ground to make sure he doesn't spoil any impressions on the earth with his footsteps. He drops to a squat and inspects the area around the vehicle, looking for footprints, wheel tracks, broken twigs, disturbed plants etc – anything that might indicate a trail.

The car looks like it was ransacked. Papers thrown about, tears or claw marks in the seats and the steering wheel appears to have been broken off. The papers don't seem to be important, you find the registration and it is the professors vehicle.

Any tracks have long been covered.

The tires have been slashed, either with a knife or something sharp.
Feb 28, 2018 3:38 am
"Best I can tell, nobody's been here recently. That means if it is Whitmer's car – unfounded assumption, Professor, I know," Barry says, anticipating Professor Mellon. "If it is Whitmer's car, he survived whatever happened here, given we heard him on the radio yesterday. Even so, I think we should be extra careful. Whatever happened to that car wasn't bloody friendly."

For no reason at all, the tales the Alawa children had told him of the Burgingin, the impossibly strong warrior pygmies, who lurked in the bush, and for fear of whom no Alawa ever hunted without a partner to watch his back, leapt into his mind. "And I think we should stick together, pairs at least, always. I don't think it's safe out here." He smiled ruefully. Homesick for the old station? You couldn't wait to get away from the place, he thought to himself. I guess you can take the boy out of the Territory...

OOC:
Does it look like the professor's car was parked here and then vandalized? Or did it veer off the side of the road and then left there?
Feb 28, 2018 12:57 pm
Magnus walks behind the abandoned vehicle and looks for signs of wheel ruts behind the tires and then up on the shoulder of the road.
Mar 1, 2018 1:12 am
The road ended here in a grassy area, like a parking spot. The vehicle looks to have been parked here. A path leads off from the car into the woods.
Mar 1, 2018 4:05 am
"All right, people!" Marv exclaims, clapping his hands together. "The road ends here. We've got to walk the rest of the way." He moves to his vehicle, pulling out his equipment, including his pistol.
Mar 1, 2018 10:16 am
"Righto, let's get moving," Barry says and fetches his backpack from the car. He takes out his machette, prepared to clear the trail if necessary.
Mar 2, 2018 2:51 am
Howard grabs his stuff from the car and falls in line behind Barry.

Marv will take point if no one else moves ahead of him. I'm not trying to steal the spotlight, but Marv is a personality that likes to lead. If someone else wants to lead, let's have them butt heads! :)

OOC:

Larry takes up the rear. As everyone starts down the trail, you hear a rustle of the plants and trees and notice that Larry is nowhere to be seen.

Howard inquisitively calls out Larry's name and cautiously approaches the spot where Larry disappeared, looking for any sign of where he might have gone.

"I bet you a pack of Camels, Larry's sitting in the Hudson, taking a nice nap. Forget him! Let's go back to the car."
Mar 9, 2018 3:58 am
Marv laughs at Magnus's comment. "Here's hoping, right?"
Mar 9, 2018 7:03 am
"Yeah, alright," Barry says, sounding unconvinced. "We're just chasing our tails out here."
Mar 9, 2018 11:33 pm
You double back, following your own trail and come back out at the cars, but no sign of Larry. You see the initial footprint from the beast and no others. It might have swooped down from the trees.
Mar 10, 2018 12:06 pm
"If this is a joke, I'm not bloody laughing," says Barry. "Could-," he stumbles over the madness of the idea, feels silly as he blurts it out, "Could he have been taken by a bird? That footprint isn't dissimilar to a bird track, and it explains the single print, but... I mean, cassowaries will do a number on a bloke, but I've never heard of one killing somebody, and the bastards can't just fly off with a poor bugger, they don't fly at all... what the hell is going on here?"
Mar 10, 2018 4:38 pm
"Let's go back to the locals and get a search party to look for Larry, or at least a guide who can help us avoid more dangers."
Mar 11, 2018 5:39 am
Marv shakes his head. "That'll take a lot of time and who knows how much time he could have?" He thinks for a second then says, "No, if you want to go talk to the locals, go for it. I think I'm going to keep looking around."
Mar 13, 2018 3:19 am
"I don't think anyone should stay here by themselves, it's too dangerous," Barry says. "If you're staying, I'm staying too." He tucks the machete into his belt and loads his shotgun.

Magnus frowns deeply, not much liking the prospect of staying in this strange forest any longer than needed, but even more dissatisfied with running the risk of looking the coward. With a sigh of disgust, he pulls a revolver out of his inner coat pocket and stands guard over the investigators.

"Bah! Birds that swoop down and steal a grown man from a forest path... This is bullshit..."

He spits a trail of brown tobacco spittle onto the mud of the path for good measure.
Mar 19, 2018 4:14 am
Marv shakes his head. "Maybe it is a joke. I don't know. It's strange, whatever it is. Let's keep moving and see if we can find this dig site." Marv looks at the others, hoping that they will agree with his plan.
OOC:
There doesn't seem to be any leads here, so I say we get back to what we were doing originally and see where that takes us.
Mar 19, 2018 4:23 am
"I agree. Let's make haste, the dig site would probably be safer than wandering about." Howard tries to use the map to gauge how much time it might take to walk to the site.
Mar 19, 2018 2:29 pm
"Yep. Hopefully we'll find some answers there – and if not, whoever's there needs to be warned about the bird," Barry says.
Mar 20, 2018 12:53 am
As you travel down the path, you notice there aren't any tracks, no one has been down it in quite some time. Also, you hear no birds, nor any insects.
Mar 22, 2018 3:26 am
Marv is slightly unnerved by the silence. He pushes past foliage blocking the path as he continues to travel down it, looking around for any threats, anything of interest, anything to break the tension.
Mar 22, 2018 3:44 am
OOC:
Is it possible to tell how far away we are from the dig site?
Mar 22, 2018 11:41 pm
OOC:
unless anyone wanted to do anything before we arrived.
The path gets muddy and heads downhill a bit. It looks like the rain has washed one side of the path out, but there is still room to pass. After walking for about 20 minutes, the path opens up into a clearing. In the clearing, you see you have come upon the dig site. From the edge of the woods, without revealing yourselves, you can see a collapsed tent, several dirt mounds, a generator, cords run on posts and some pools of water.
Mar 22, 2018 11:58 pm
Howard cannot quite hide his sneer, "I certainly hope we can manage better accommodations than this for the night."
OOC:
Does the generator look like it might work? Are the cords on the posts connected to it?
Mar 23, 2018 4:12 am
Marv has a bad feeling about the mounds of dirt and carefully steps into the clearing, going to investigate the first mound of dirt.
Mar 23, 2018 5:10 pm
"Damn it, I don't like this," Barry says under his breath, and follows Marv.
Mar 23, 2018 10:54 pm
OOC:
Howard would have to get closer and expose himself into the clearing to make sure.
If he does, it looks wet, but not in bad shape. It has a main cord that runs to a box and other cords run out of the box around the camp.

The mounds of dirt seem to be from the holes that are filled with water. Maybe from the excavation. There are cords disappearing into each water hole that lead back towards the generator.
Mar 24, 2018 1:57 am
Marv looks back at Howard, gesturing to the cords disappearing into the water-filled holes. "Do you think there are pumps down there?"
Mar 27, 2018 12:04 am
Not hesitating for professorly speculation, Big Dutch uses his stick-club to shove down into the water. Swishing it around, he feels for something solid or metallic.
Mar 27, 2018 1:38 am
"Perhaps they are pumps. I'll see if I can get it running" Howard checks to see if it has fuel, and if not he'll search the site for some.

"Please be gentle poking around in those holes, Mr. Peddersen! If these are excavation digs, you might damage delicate artifacts!"
Mar 27, 2018 2:35 pm
Concerned about the 'bird', Barry keeps watch whilst Howard, Magnus and Marv investigate the holes.
Mar 28, 2018 12:02 am
Big Dutch's stick doesn't touch bottom, but does connect with something. Roll for luck.

Howard finds an almost submerged pull rope in the mud and upon checking the tank, it is full and smells like good gas.

OOC:
Is the pull rope used to turn the generator on? Can I tell what will happen if I do turn it on?
Apr 5, 2018 1:55 am
"Son of a...!" Big Dutch begins, lurching forward suddenly before falling back abruptly and tumbling into the mud, his hands clamped vice-like around his club. "Something grabbed the adjectival stick!"

He squeeges watery filth from his cheek with a mucky hand as he scrambles back to his feet, wide-eyed. He appears to be expecting something to leap out of the pit at any moment. Brandishing the stick with one hand, he reaches again for the revolver tucked in his belt.

"I'm really starting to hate this place..."

Marv smirks a bit at Big Dutch. "Something grabbed the stick? Really? What could possibly have done that?"
Apr 5, 2018 2:46 pm
"Oi, take it easy, mate. It's been a rough day for all of us, alright?" Barry says. "If he says something grabbed it, then something bloody well grabbed it." He goes to investigate the collapsed tent.
Apr 6, 2018 2:42 am
Marv shakes his head with another chuckle then moves to the edge of the pool of water. "Hey, anyone got a flashlight on them? Let's see if we can see what's down there..."
OOC:
Would it be reasonable for us to have a flashlight with us? Or, do we not have something if it's not on our character sheet?
Apr 7, 2018 12:03 am
The generator has an old gas enging that has a pulley you wrap the rope around and pull to get the compression going and start the generator. It goes to a power box and wires come from the bix, which is closed to all over the site.

The water stops moving after the commotion, and stays still, nothing turns in it.

Some of the poles look snapped an the top of the tent has water in it, it appears maybe the rain was too much for the tent to hold with no one to empty it, it broke.
OOC:
If it's not on your sheet, a luck roll to see if somehow, you picked one up somewhere.

Do I find a flashlight?

Edit: I do!
Marv goes to the tent and starts to root around through the detritus around it and finds what he was looking for. "Aha! Got one." Holding a flashlight, he moves over to the water, clicking it on and pointing it into the water.

"I'm sure it's not going to last very long, but perhaps it'll give us a glance down there before it dies."

Apr 9, 2018 12:27 am

Apr 11, 2018 12:50 am
Dutch readies his club, glancing over at the pit where he got startled. For now, he is standing at the generator, but he slowly, cautiously makes his way back.
Apr 11, 2018 3:50 am
Marv stands over the pit, watching the water start to move as the pump goes to work. Glancing back at Dutch, he smiles, "I'm sure it's going to take a long while to get all that water out. Why don't we take a look around and see if we can figure out where everyone went?"

Without waiting for an answer, but expecting the company, Marv begins to look around, particularly poking around in the tent, to see if he can find any clues that tell him where everyone went or why everyone's gone.
Apr 12, 2018 6:56 pm
Dutch doesn't listen to Marv's polite request; instead standing transfixed before the muddy water hole, waiting to see what horror might be revealed, swimming beneath the murk.

Apr 14, 2018 9:55 am
"The motza, maybe! Your guess is as good as mine, let's have a look out in the light," Barry says, and takes the box out of the tent and opens it.

"Shut yer yap, wouldj'a?! We'll see what's down there when the water is out."

He clutches his club, white-knuckled, prepared to swing for the fences.
Apr 17, 2018 1:10 am
Marv had knocked over some stuff while looking, revealing the box to Barry.

The box looks hand carved and has strange figures and runes on it. It opens without any troubles though. Inside is a couple of books and a few letter addressed and stamped, but never mailed out.

Dutch peers as the water level keeps lowering, but the pumps have made the water muddy and thick. It looks like the water is a third of the way drained, and no movement yet.
Apr 19, 2018 2:57 pm
Barry finds a suitable place to sit down, and begins to read the letters.

Marv, visibly shaken by the events, shrugs his shoulders and tugs at his collar to adjust his shirt. Breathing a cleansing sigh, she gives Barry a half smile. "Don't worry about it. This is... disturbing. But, yeah, let's go find Dutch."

He turns and walks with Barry, going in the general direction he thought he saw the man run off.
May 30, 2018 2:36 pm
The investigators find Dutch standing alone in a small clearing, leaning against the thick trunk of a tall aspen. He is breathing heavily and clenching and unclenching his fists repeatedly. However, the wildness of his eyes seems to have subsided and he seems aware of you and calm enough to nod his acknowledgement of your approach.

All you can hear are the sounds of his heavy breathing. The copse is otherwise stony silent.

Marv walks up, slowly, making sure to cause noise in his approach. "Hey, Dutch, you all right?" he calls over softly. As he gets closer to the other man, he reaches out a hand and lightly rests it on his shoulder. "That was pretty freaky, wasn't it?"
Jun 9, 2018 5:57 pm
Barry reloads his shotgun whilst waiting for Dutch to answer.
Jun 12, 2018 1:24 am
Magnus recoils as if Marv's hand were a reaching tentacle.

"Dddon'touchme!!" he stammers, looking as though he could run off again at the slightest provocation.

Dutch grasps his rough club and regards Barry as he loads the gun.

"Did you get 'em?" he manages to utter, by the time Barry's weapon is reloaded.

"Hurt it, I think. Hopefully the bugger has second thoughts about bothering people from now on," Barry says, mustering a reassuring smile that manages to be only half grimace. "You blokes have any ideas about our next move?" he asks.
Jun 13, 2018 10:53 pm
Barry remembers the wooden box as he asks about the next move.
Jun 14, 2018 5:30 am
Marv drops his hand to his side and looks between Dutch and Barry. "Do either of you have any idea what that thing is? I don't think I've ever seen anything like it."
Jun 15, 2018 12:56 pm
Thinking about the thing gnaws at the edges of Barry's sanity. He shakes his head mutely.
Jun 16, 2018 12:31 am
Applying his thought to the memory of that abomination seems to set Dutch to quaking and cursing under his breath.

"I don't want to... think about what that was!" he manages, lighting a cigarette with shaking hands as he inhales a long crackling puff of nicotine-infused smoke into his frayed psyche.

"Fuccchhh" he exhales, seeming to drop down into a slightly calmer tier of cautious fear.

He hoists the club again and waits for a decision.

"We stay away from that adjectival hole! You hear me?!" he blusters, managing a shadow of his characteristic bravado.

Marv rubs at his wounds and softly says, "That sounds like a good idea to me. But, we still don't know what happened here. Perhaps we should go into the nearby town and ask after the professor and his group?"
Jun 18, 2018 10:36 pm
Marv, give me a luck roll, it will be for a later use, but planning ahead now.
Jun 19, 2018 5:36 pm
"Yeah, righto, let's do that," relief is audible in Barry's voice. "I'll just grab that box with the papers." He darts over to where he left the box, snatches it up and puts it in his backpack.
Jun 20, 2018 4:08 am
Marv starts to head back to the car to head into town.

Dutch scowls, but definitely doesn't voice any objections. He turns and follows Marv in the direction of the car. In his panic to escape the tentacle-horrors, he completely lost his sense of orientation.
Jun 21, 2018 11:31 pm
You head back to the cars and they seem untouched and in the same condition as you left them.
Jun 22, 2018 3:59 am
Marv jumps into the driver's seat and waves the others to get in. Once they do, he'll head into town.
Jun 22, 2018 8:58 pm
After some tight turning around, you head back the bumpy road and turn back on a paved one and head into town. Checking the rear view mirror once on the road, Marv sees a girl waving goodbye from the dirt path they came from.
Jun 23, 2018 5:37 pm
Marv slows, turning in his seat to look at the woman. "Hey, anyone else see her?"

If he sees her, he'll wave back and stop the car, get out and walk over to her.
Jun 25, 2018 10:48 am
"See what?" Barry also turns to look.

I apologize for asking this, but I recall that we were divided in two vehicles when we drove here. Can someone remind me if I am driving the vehicle in which Barry and Marv are passengers? Maybe I am now a passenger? Maybe I am driving separate?

Jun 26, 2018 11:40 pm
She is a little ways back as you are driving off. You could still stop and get out if you want to.
Jun 27, 2018 2:53 am
Marv stops his vehicle in the middle of the street, parking it and gets out, leaving his door open and the engine running. He walks in the direction of the woman, smiling slightly and waves to her.

"Hi! I'm Marv. What's your name?" This being the first person the group has come across, Marv hopes to see if she has any information on the missing expedition.
Jun 29, 2018 12:32 pm
Dutch spots the tailing car slowing down and then parking so that Marv can get out and speak to a broad that just wandered out of the woods.

"Christ!" he curses, shaking his head in disbelief. "A skirt way out here in the boonies..."

He pulls over and puts his vehicle in park, watching the interaction by twisting his rear view mirror.

Barry stays in the car, not willing to interfere with Marv's prized vehicle nor take any risks with their means of getting the hell out of this place. He keeps an eye on the conversation as best as he can, occasionally scanning the surroundings.

"Are you alright? What was that about?" Barry asks Marv with a searching look.
Jul 11, 2018 2:10 am
Marv looks at Barry, his brows furrowed, "I must've been seeing stuff, you know?" he says, then immediately asks, "Did you see a woman back there waving?" He grips the wheel of his car, his knuckles going white as he feels his muscles tremble a little at the fright he experienced.

"There was a woman there, I started to talk, then she looked at me, opened her sharp-toothed throat and disappeared." He gives a forced smile. "You saw her too, right? I'm not seeing things, am I?"
Jul 11, 2018 3:05 pm
"Marv, I don't know what you saw, but there's no-one there."
Jul 12, 2018 2:37 am
Marv just says, "Damn," then puts the vehicle back in gear and starts moving toward the nearby town. He spends the journey staring hard at the road, his jaw muscles clenching and unclenching rhythmically as he drives, his knuckles turning white from his grip on the wheel. His speed climbs until his tires squeal on a slight turn and he eases back on the gas, letting his speed drop a bit.

The wind picks up and debris starts blowing over the road, a bright flash of lightning temporary blinds Dutch, but Marv happened to blink and see the branch hit the road swerving to miss it. Dutch hits the bracnh and swerves off the road, at least 1 tire is blown maybe more, the rain is pounding against the glass of the auto.
Aug 5, 2018 9:51 am
Dutch hammers the steering wheel with both fists, screaming, "Fitta!"

He sits for a minute, screaming unfamiliar syllables which can only be some kind of cursing in another tongue.

Eventually, he opens the door and gets out, his red face radiating hot anger. After circumnavigating the car once, he checks the trunk for a spare and whatever jack or tools might be stowed away back there.

At closer inspection, the wheel itself is sitting oddly and it looks like the axle is broke. You can see the other vehicle is stopped in front of you on the other side of the tree.
Aug 7, 2018 1:00 am
"Piss on it!" growls Dutch. "I’ll deal with it tomorrow."

He gives the twisted axle a final kick of frustration and makes his way toward the other vehicle.

Hopefully those buggers’ll slide over and make room...

Aug 9, 2018 3:04 am
"Tough break, Dutch," Marv says with a smile. "You all right?"

He taps on the steering wheel with his thumb and slides as much as he can towards his door. "Hop in. We'll make as much room as we can."
Aug 9, 2018 9:55 am
Dutch bites his tongue and gets in the car, practically vibrating with rage.

"Just get us to town..." he mumbles, dripping rainwater down his face and onto those squeezed in alongside him.

Marv looks over his shoulder at the fallen tree and the wrecked car and shakes his head before putting the vehicle back in gear and rolling down the road.
Aug 10, 2018 9:58 pm
The sky lightens a little as you pull into a small village. The houses are old cobblestone, most with moss growing on them and wrapping up to the slate shingle roof. They appear to be lived in, but the lawns seem to have been left to grow on a majority of them. An old man watched you approach and sneers, turns and goes towards a house. Looking towards main street you see a police station, a small pub and a general store.
Aug 10, 2018 11:19 pm
Marv looks at the others and says, "How about a quick stop at the pub? I could certainly use it..."
Aug 11, 2018 8:11 am
"Now you're talking my language," says Barry.
Aug 15, 2018 12:14 am
The windows of the pub have all been painted black and the wood of the building is grey and faded. The sign hanging from the front is broke, swinging in the wind, but appears to have once said food and drink with an arrow to the door.
Aug 15, 2018 4:03 am
Marv's shoulders fall slightly when he realizes the poor state of the building. "Well, I'm not sure what we're going to find in here." He reaches out and grabs the door handle, trying to open the door.
Aug 15, 2018 4:58 pm
"If they've got cold beer, I don't care if we have to sit on splinters," says Barry.
Aug 22, 2018 12:16 am
As everyone gets out to head into the tavern, Dutch feels odd and hangs back a moment. If anyone looks back, a woman approaches him and leads him off into the alley, it's the same woman Marv saw earlier.
Aug 23, 2018 3:16 am
Marv sees Dutch walk away with the woman and calls out, "Hey, Dutch!" When the man disappears into the alley, Marv steps down from the porch in front of the tavern and walks after him, looking around for the other man. When he doesn't spot him, he walks back to the others and points behind him with his thumb over his shoulder. "Did he tell any of you where he was going?"
Aug 23, 2018 7:58 am
"Gone walkabout, has he? I didn't realise he'd left," Barry says. "You know, he was acting a bit strange earlier. God, I need a drink!" And with that, he enters the pub.
Aug 23, 2018 2:06 pm
Marv stands on the steps, looking after the disappeared Dutch for a few seconds, before shaking his head and following Barry.

What's the go, GM?
Sep 13, 2018 1:41 am
The pub doors open revealing an aged and dirty bar. The walls, floor and ceiling are a dark brown and stained wood. The smell of stale smoke and bodies lingers here. An old man stands behind the bar wiping a rage back and forth without much motivation or cause. Anothe gentleman sits at the bar, but his back is to you. In the dim light, you see a couple of figures sitting in a booth. The painted windows make it har to see. Only a few yellow lights illuminate the area.
Sep 13, 2018 3:55 am
Marv smiles and takes a deep breath, letting it out. His family has a lot of money, but it wasn't always like that. Coming to places like this always give him a feeling like coming home. While he wouldn't choose to live like this, it feels good to slum it, even just for a little while.

Marv moves to the bar and sits down, holding up a single finger to ask for whatever drink they default to.
Sep 13, 2018 4:48 pm
Barry takes a seat next to Marv. "Me two, please!" he grins, holding up two fingers.
Sep 13, 2018 10:26 pm
The bartender wipes out two mugs and pulls some draft from a tab by the bar and puts the drinks in front of you.
Sep 14, 2018 3:31 am
Marv grabs his mug by the handle, noting the warmth of the glass, and brings it up to his lips with a smile. After a couple swallows, he thumps the mug down with a contented sigh and looks to the bartender. "How are ya? Name's Marv."
Sep 17, 2018 1:19 am
"Names Rick, you just tripled my business so far, so not bad."
Sep 18, 2018 5:19 pm
Barry raises his glass in a toast. "Your continued good fortune, then," he says. "And yours as well, gents," he adds to Marv and to the other patrons, taking the opportunity to study them quickly. "I'm Barry, by the way."
Sep 19, 2018 4:42 am
Marv begins to buy drinks and talk to the bartender and the few patrons that are present, getting to know them a little and see what kind of gossip they like to spread. After awhile, he'll drop hints that he and the rest of his companions are there looking for the people who were working the dig and ask if anyone has any news or knowledge of their whereabouts or goings-on.
Oct 4, 2018 12:03 am
"That dig be cursed. Ya should leave what's buried alone. Ya stir up some bad things. Those Indians were evil for sure." The bartender says and then spits on the ground.
Oct 4, 2018 2:36 am
"Indians? Don't tell me you believe in Indian curses!" he exclaims with a laugh. "What does it matter if they were evil? They're dead!"
Oct 6, 2018 12:30 am
"Not all of them are dead. An old woman still lives from one of the neighboring tribes. She lives in the bog, keeps to herself. Not all dead things leave sir, be weary!"
Oct 8, 2018 3:21 am
Marv's smile falls a little, but only a little. His mind spins as the bar tender clues him in to the existence of someone who might know, probably does know, about the supposed curse. She'll also be clued in if there are any rogue bands of natives who are looking to get revenge on civilized folk for desecrating their land.

He raises his glass in a salute to the bar tender and says, "Consider me warned," then takes a sip from the glass and returns it to the table.

The man who walks in would be easily mistaken for your next door Average Joe if it weren't for his antiquated cop's uniform and the billy club at his hip which slaps him in his thighs as he strides in. His plain looks, average frame, and easy manner cut the opposite of an imposing figure as he flashes a smile, first at Rick, then the room. He takes a seat at a table by the door, facing the new guests to town, and orders a draft.

After taking a few moments to get a good few looks at the pair, who seem a bit lonely for what people were reporting as a "crowd" of strangers coming into town, he waves them over in a warm invitation.

"'Ey there. Name's Ari Fishman. Feel free to call me Ari. How're you doin' this fine evenin', Misters...?" he trails off in an imploring manner.
Oct 24, 2018 10:59 pm
Marv slowly takes two dollars out of his wallet, pointedly ignoring the new man. He pays for the jar of eggs and pulls it toward him, holding it in the crook of his elbow.

He slowly turns toward Ari, a small smile resting on his face. "Are you what passes for the local coppers?" he asks in a quiet voice. "I'm not that impressed."
OOC:
I'm son of a gangster, so I'm not going to immediately warm up to someone who looks like a cop. But, I'm not trying to drive Ari away. Let me know if Marv's antagonism is too much at any point.
Oct 25, 2018 4:40 am
OOC:
No prob, Bob.
Ari's eyes flicker as he processes the young man's words but he doesn't frown or anything, like that. With a smile that looks a bit forced, he replies, "Well, I'm the local copper. That's me, Sheriff Ari Fishman. Sorry for not bein' a big scary-lookin' fella like I'm sure you probably get in the cities but that's just how it is 'round here. Talkin' 'bout impressions, though, you boys have made quite a few. We rarely get any strangers and the last couple were those queer university folks that were checkin' out that dig. Given the concerned calls, I figured I ought to come in and introduce myself. So, let's start over, why don't we? I'm Ari Fishman, what passes for local coppers. What's your name?"
OOC:
So, lunitar, what does Ari actually know about the situation here?
Oct 26, 2018 11:37 am
"Whoa, steady on," Barry says to Marv. "The bloke's just doing his job." To Ari, butting in: "I'm sorry, we've had a bit of a rough day. My name's Barry. We're from the university too – sent down to check on the expedition, make sure they're not causing any bother, you know."
Oct 27, 2018 1:08 am
Marv smiles over at Barry, then turns to offer Ari his hand. "Yeah, rough day. Name's Marv Coletti." His smile looks more than a little forced.
Oct 27, 2018 5:36 pm
Ari had been called for the strange events happening at the dig site, but was trumped by the state cops and they took over the investigation. The university people were well mannered and paid the local establishments well, up until the accidents started happening. He doesn't know much about where everyone went as he was to forward all concerns on.
Oct 28, 2018 5:18 am
"Well, that's alright, then. "

Ari's smile widens, with more sincerity this time, in spite of Marv's clear wariness.

"Nice to hear they've sent some people to take care of business. People 'round here been a bit on edge ever since the accidents kept comin'... Misfortune spreading and all that. But say, folks were tellin' me there were two cars what came in, some passengers each. They your friends or am I gonna have to find a whole 'nother group to introduce myself to?"
Oct 28, 2018 5:04 pm
Marv smiles, a little more genuine now that cars were introduced to the conversation. "Nah, that's us."
Nov 1, 2018 9:02 pm
"Right on, then. Not much for drinkin' then, are they? More for us then. Here, on me. Small town welcome to you university students."

Ari signals Rick for a round to be brought.
Nov 1, 2018 9:33 pm
Rick brings a round.
Nov 1, 2018 10:12 pm
Marv thinks for a few seconds before raising his glass with a smile at Ari. This cat is all right, he thinks as he takes another drink. Maybe I can work with him. For now.

After swallowing and setting his glass down, he asks Ari, "So, where are the rest of the people who were here before?"
Nov 2, 2018 3:44 am
"Far as I'm 'ware - an' I'm pretty keen on talkin' to folks 'round town - they all went back to wherever they came from after the... Well, I ain't one for superstition like Rick, so I'll just call 'em unhappy accidents. Figured you musta seen 'em if'n you're from the same place. Haven't really been up to the site myself on fact of them state troopers takin' on the case. If you're lookin' for answers, could be they got 'em. Me, I'm happy to not be messing with that business. Wife ain't too fond'v'it neither."
Nov 3, 2018 3:01 am
"The State Troopers got involved? Oh, well!" he laughs mirthlessly, "We're all saved, now!" He shakes his head and then continues, "Do they have an office around here? I would like to talk to them. If they took on the case, they certainly dropped the ball. We have one abandoned vehicle out by the site with no one near it anymore. I want to know what they found."
Nov 3, 2018 5:50 am
OOC:
Oh lunitar I beseech thee for an answer. :D
Nov 3, 2018 1:15 pm
The state police came in with unmarked cars, but had the right credentials, more like feds. They did some investigations, only a day or so, but left with no one and seemed to leave in a hurry. You were told everything was okay and not to bother the dig.
Nov 3, 2018 4:18 pm
"Haha, good one, man. Why in the world would they put up an office for 'emselves out here in our little town. Naw, you'll honestly prolly have better luck goin' back to the University. Prolly an office somewhere in the city. Sorry 'bout that. Oh, they told me not to bother the dig and not to let anyone else neither, now that I think 'bout it. You got papers from the University, right? I figure if this's your job then no problems are gonna be comin' to bite me in the rear end later if I let you boys keep on havin' a looksee."
Nov 5, 2018 3:16 am
"Ah!" Marv says, leaning back in his chair with a sour look on his face. "Well, we were out there and did have a looksee." He pauses before continuing. "There's nothing out there! Or, no one. Just a mess becoming a ruin." He shakes his head and lifts his glass to have another swallow. "We're gonna have to get out there and take another look. Or find someone around here who can tell us more."
Nov 7, 2018 12:41 am
Ari remembers a chap named Wilhelm von Kluck, a psychologist sent by the university, that had talked to the group at the dig site. He thinks he may still be in town.
Nov 7, 2018 4:48 am
"Ah, you know, there was a smart fella by the name of Wilhelm. He was university too, like y'all. Went down by the dig and talked to 'em while they were still 'round. Could be he's still in town himself. Think he was stayin' at... the Hawthornes, maybe? If so they're a bit aways outta town but not too far. Hard to get around at night, though. And, 'course, there ain't no drunk drivin' be happenin' in my town, ya hear?"

With a mock harsh tone and a smile on his face, the declaration comes across with an even mixture of seriousness and levity.
Nov 7, 2018 3:33 pm
"Hey, that's a great idea," Barry says. "We definitely didn't pass them on the way, and the camp's empty as a beer bottle – of people, anyway. It's like the whole bunch up and left. Someone's got to know what's going on, and I like the odds on this Wilhelm fella."
Nov 7, 2018 8:36 pm
Marv nods, finishing off his drink and smiles at Ari. "Well, I'm ready to go find Wilhelm. And, it takes more than that," he points at the glass on the table in front of him, "to get me drunk."
Nov 8, 2018 5:10 am
"Well, we'll see 'bout that when you stand up," Ari jokes back with a smile.

"Anyways, if y'all're really deadset on swinging by at this hour, you'd best be bringin' 'em some sorta gift for-a trouble. An' I'll escort you boys, since could be the welcome you get goin' alone'll be more lead than smiles."
Nov 9, 2018 1:58 am
The front door opens, and a middle aged man enters the bar, he has a coat in one hand and an unmistakable black doctors bag in the other.
OOC:
Enter Dr. David Kilgore
Nov 9, 2018 3:27 am
David walks into the bar, coat in hand, and glances at the patrons, almost certain he's seen one or more around the university. He walks up to the bar, coughing a bit into a handkerchief. Excuse me, could i have some whiskey to warm me up? I'm afraid I caught a chill from outside. Once he gets his drink he walks over toward the forming group of gentlemen. He clears his throat to speak, coming up beside the odd-looking policeman, sparing a look. Hello, gentlemen. Would any of you know where the new Roanoke colony dig-site is? The one in the papers as of late? He asks quickly and directly.
Nov 9, 2018 4:05 am
Marv blinks at the newcomer, then begins to chuckle. "Well, well. Did they send you to check up on us? We only just got here."
Nov 9, 2018 4:39 am
David raises an eyebrow. I don't know what you mean. I'm here of my own volition. He squints at Marv. I'm certain I know you from somewhere. Yes, yes, you're Coletti's boy aren't you? What are you doing here?
Nov 9, 2018 5:05 am
Ari nods along at this new development and smiles at the dignified gentleman. He was going to give these two young'uns the benefit of the doubt but this man's clearly someone from a University and seems to know these two. He nurses his mug and settles in his chair, a front row seat to these interesting happenings in his sleepy, little town.

Marv's eyes get a little wider in surprise. "So you're not here to babysit. That's a relief." He waves to a chair at the table, inviting the older man to sit.

"You've got me right. And, who might you be?"
Nov 10, 2018 2:30 pm
Dr. David Kilgore. I am a friend and collegue of Professor Whitmer and I'm certain I've seen both of you around the University. He takes a seat and extends his hand to Barry and then to Marv. And you also, man-of-the-law. He shakes Ari's hand. Say, why are you dressed so unusually? I haven't seen a police uniform like that before. He asks Ari.
Nov 10, 2018 4:48 pm
"Well, it's an old, local uniform. It's not like sheriff's office is rolling in the dough so it's a bit of a hand-me-down. Fits alright though, with my woman bein' able to patch it up right. Name's Ari, Sheriff Ari Fishman, Dr. Kilgore, pleasure make your 'quaintance."
Nov 12, 2018 9:19 am
"How d'ya do," Barry says, shaking David's hand and introducing himself. "Listen, Doctor, we've been out to the dig site and it's deserted. I was hoping you might have some insight as to what's going on, because I'm stumped."
Nov 12, 2018 9:40 pm
Endermun sent a note to lunitar
He seems surprised at Barry's statement. So you mean to tell me that you're here to investigate as well? He asks, simultaneously digging through his bag.
Nov 13, 2018 3:31 pm
"Yeah, the Dean thought someone ought to check up on the dig, see what's happening there," Barry says. "Anyway, we headed up there and the place is deserted! Threw us for a loop. What's set you on the investigative path?"
Nov 14, 2018 12:58 am
OOC:
You didn't have much to do with the site beyond superficial visits, but did autopsies and checked the bodies for foul play, which you never found signs of. The professor didn't have much time to see you and only gave you a cold hello once when running into you. He seemed gaunt and thinner than you remember him, a fire burned deep within his eyes though. You know you weren't called to any deaths after the chance meeting though. The last one was brought to you, he slipped down some rocks by a cave they dais, it was dep in the woods along the river, and indeed, the young man's neck was broke and he had scrapes and abrasions that backed up their story. You remember seeing an odd girl always standing on the edge of the woods when you were there, and along the woods in the road as you left town the last time. She waved at you.
Nov 14, 2018 1:15 am
I've only made cursury visits to the site in the past, due almost entirely to the unusual amount of deaths around it. I was called to document cause of death, you see.
He says, drawing a notebook from his bag and flipping though it. That and Whitmer seemed to undergo a change of character. Did you happen to listen to the radio broadcast after the baseball game? That man was entirely unfamiliar to me in everything but voice.
Nov 15, 2018 7:09 am
"As a matter of fact I did hear it, and it's very interesting that you say that," Barry says. "Look, I think we should go talk to this von Kluck character, and if you don't mind, doc, I'd like you to join us. Whaddya reckon, Marv?"
Nov 15, 2018 11:02 pm
As you walk behind Marv, Dr. Kilgore, give me a spot hidden.
Nov 15, 2018 11:04 pm

Marv nods at the others and moves to leave. "It appears we have work to do. Let's get to it. We can drink more when the job is done."
Nov 17, 2018 8:07 am
Ari looks up at the three men as they make to leave and sits up in his chair, but makes no move to really leave.

"If y'all want, I can 'ccompany you. No offense, but you are kinda strangers 'ere. This familiar face o' mine might help smooth things over for your meetin'. If not, well, best of luck with all your investigatin', Rick's crud beer'll be here waitin' for ya. Naw, Rick, c'mon, you know it's just a joke!"

The cop laughs off Rick's good-natured grumbling.
Nov 17, 2018 10:22 am
"That's a very kind offer, Ari, and I'll take you up on it. We'd appreciate your help," Barry says.
Nov 17, 2018 3:56 pm
Marv nods at Barry, then looks at Ari a little confused. "You're a law-man and you needed an invitation to stick your nose in someone else's business?" He shakes his head slightly. "You're not like any cop I've ever met..."
Nov 17, 2018 4:24 pm
Ari stands up, really quite tall - if not that stout - now that you stand side by side with him, and pats Marv on the shoulder with a smile.

"Jus' bein' polite, far as I see it. Town as small as this, I hear 'bout it one way or 'nother eventually. If I'm here or there, though, maybe I clear out a scrap or too. Er, not that I expect it to go like that for y'all. But, like you said, I do tend to stick my nose in people's business," he finishes with a chuckle.
Nov 18, 2018 3:23 am
Marv awkwardly reaches over and pats Ari on the back, under the other man's arm on his shoulder. His lips are tight as he nods, his embarrassment at misjudging the man apparent on his face.
Nov 18, 2018 4:29 am
I'd be glad to join you. Kilgore says with a smile. Come on then, all, the night's only going to get colder and it's quite late as it is. He puts on his coat to brace for the cold weather outside.
Nov 18, 2018 6:21 pm
"Alright'en, jus' follow me! Ari says, with no small amount of cheer in his voice. His stride is long, but he keeps his pace slow so others don't have to hurry up to walk alongside him.
Nov 23, 2018 4:59 pm
Just down the road from the bar, you come up to a two story house, the siding has faded paint and the windows are old and dirty. A light is on inside and you see someone sitting at the table. A cobble stone walkway meanders up to the front door.
Nov 24, 2018 2:48 am
Marv glances at the others before strolling up the steps and knocking on the door.
Nov 24, 2018 9:09 pm
Wilhelm von Kluck(Awsmack) hears a knock on the door.
Nov 26, 2018 4:02 am
"Verdammt..." Wilhelm grumbles to himself at the disturbance. The table he sits at is oak with severely chipped lacquer and is covered with loose papers on a variety of topics. He shuffles a few of them, reaches blindly for his brass-handled cane and, having found it, uses lift himself out of his chair. He walks with a slight limp toward the door, the consequence of a childhood accident, and opens it. "Ja, what can I do for you?" he says in his thick German accent.
Nov 26, 2018 5:42 am
Marv smiles at the man behind the door. "Good evening, sir. My name is Marv and these are my fellows from the University. We're here about the dig outside of town and heard you might know something about it?"
Nov 26, 2018 6:40 am
"Evenin', Mr. Kluck - I can vouch for 'em, I think. They seemed frien'ly nuff," calls out Ari, having moved to the back of the group.

"Well, my side job as a tour guide now done, I think I'll be on my way. Unless, o' course, ya'd rather I stay, Mr. Kluck."
Nov 28, 2018 10:11 pm
Wilhem squints at Marv then pokes his head out the door to get a look at Ari and the others outside, sizing up the spectacle. He then turns back to Marv, "I don't know much beyond what I've read in the papers. The University asked for my advice on the mental state of the Professor Whitmer und the others involved, but so far I have not been able to locate them or been allowed within 10 kilometers of the site." With that, he flips open his cigarette case, lights one, then steps out into the night air with the rest of the crowd. "Have you've seen it?" he asks, eagerness in his voice.

Hold on a moment, chief. David says, approaching Ari as he's getting into his car. I have a feeling that we might need your talents later. How can we get a hold of you if we have the need?
Nov 29, 2018 10:32 pm
"Yeah, you haven't finished sticking your nose in other people's business..." he smiles at his own joke.
Nov 30, 2018 9:54 pm
"Plenty o' time for all that later, boy-o," cracks Ari, flashing a smile back at Marv - before turning to Dr. Kilgore.

"Well, Mister Doctor, I'm mostly 'bout town, helpin' ol' grannies get to the drugstore and what not. So, you know, just ask 'roun'. If you're short on time, though, might be that I'm at the Sheriff's office. Right down Main, can't miss it. Office number's 540-212-8649. Ain't gonna give you my home number until we go out for a round o' drinks with the missus, though. Haha! Y'all have a g'night then. Don't let'em bed bugs bite!"

Satisfied with the job he's done here, Ari whistles a couple repetitive notes and leaves the fine folk to their University business.
Dec 1, 2018 4:17 am
As he watches Ari leave, Marv shrugs, turning back to Wilhelm. "Well, you wanted to see the dig site, yes? And, we want some answers. How about we all meet early in the morning and head down there? Would you be up for that?" Now that it's late, and dark, Marv isn't so keen on going out the dig site, right now. The weird things he saw there stick in the back of him mind, making him a little nervous.
Dec 4, 2018 5:28 pm
Wilhelm takes a log drag on his cigarette and exhales. "Yes, absolutely. Where should we meet?" he asks.
Dec 5, 2018 4:41 am
Marv glances around before shrugging. "I don't know much here, so why not in front of the pub?"
Dec 5, 2018 10:22 pm

Marv smiles as he breathes in the cool morning air. He leans against his vehicle, waiting for the others.
Dec 7, 2018 9:10 pm
Wilhelm opens the car door, places a wool fedora on his head, and uses his walking cane to hoist himself out of the black taxi that's brought him to the pub. Spotting Marv, he smiles and walks over to his car. He then draws a cigarette from his silver case, lights it, and admires the smoke as it floats upward in the morning light. "Guten Morgen. For whom else are we waiting?"
Dec 8, 2018 3:30 pm
Marv smiles at Wilhelm, pushing himself up off the fender of his car to stand with the other man. "Everyone else. I guess they like to sleep late," he says with a small chuckle.

"So, what is it that you do, exactly?" he asks.
Dec 9, 2018 5:51 pm
"Morning, gents," Barry says, looking slightly haggard as he ambles up to Marv and Wilhelm. "Hope you slept better than me."
Dec 10, 2018 3:42 am
Marv chuckles at Barry. "Judging by your appearance this morning, I'd say I did. Was the mattress too hard?"

Behind his eyes, Marv wonders if something set Barry to worrying last night. Based on all the strange goings on, it wouldn't be impossible that the other man couldn't find sleep through all the odd events.
Dec 10, 2018 7:12 pm
"Evangelizing for Herr Freud," Wilhelm answers with a smirk. Then, realizing this lot might not know of the genius of Herr Doktor, he clears his throat and clarifies more seriously, "I'm a psychiatrist. I study the mind and attempt to unravel all its beautiful intricacies. You?"

I'm present. David days as he approaches, walking leisurely up the road towards the car. What is the plan currently? He asks while still some distance away.
Dec 13, 2018 5:02 am

Marv scoffs a little and shakes his head at the mention of bringing the cop into the group, but notably doesn't object. Inside, he feels a little conflicted, as the police have always been the bad guys, but he recognizes the use of having one with them, now.

OOC:
Sorry guys, still not getting emails and they remind me to check often.

Everyone piles into the car and drives out the way they came the day before. You drive past where the tree fell and the car should still be, but it's gone, both of them. There is no tree, no stump, no marks in the road, everything is gone.
Jan 12, 2019 4:05 am
Marv cranes his neck to look at the location as they drive past. "Hey, whose care was that? The one we left here yesterday? Someone's going to be very upset it's gone."
Jan 12, 2019 4:40 pm
The turnoff for the dirt road leading into the woods is up ahead.
Jan 13, 2019 4:08 pm
Marv takes the turnoff, making his way down the dirt road to the same spot they parked at last time. He wonders if that guy who went missing while they were hiking in ever made it back to the road and caught a ride back to the university. After he parks the car, he switches it off and sits in the seat for a few moments, remembering the slimy worm things he encountered and shudders a little, his shoulders shaking slightly. "I must be remembering them wrong. Surely they weren't that big..." he mutters and then gets out of the vehicle, shutting the door a little harder than necessary. The violence helps to ground him in the moment and clear the questions from his head.
Jan 13, 2019 9:52 pm
Marv feels his skin crawl when he relieves that moment, surely just nerves. The other car is still here in the same condition as it was left. The trail you took heads away and is undisturbed also.
Jan 21, 2019 5:03 am
Marv looks in the other car, just to make sure that nothing has changed. Not that he expects anything to change. It's more of a nervous habit than anything.

After glancing in the other vehicle, he looks at the others and gives them a smile, trying to hide his nerves. "All right, let's head in." With that, he starts to move down the trail to the camp.
OOC:
Uh oh, did we lose some more people?
Jan 21, 2019 12:21 pm
"Yeah, righto," Barry says. He follows Marv, gun in hand, eyes nervously scanning the trees.
Jan 21, 2019 9:28 pm
David follows close behind, toting his black doctors bag.
Jan 21, 2019 11:35 pm
The way is a little more muddy from the previous night's rain, but still passable. Once you get to the dig site, you notice silence and the pits have filled with water again.

The car parked here when you pul up has been gone through. The tires slashed, claw marks in the car itself, somehing ripped it to pieces. No signs of others at the trail head.

The dig site is in ruins. The tents have collapsed and lay in heaps over the contents. There are ponds of water around the camp and some seem to have a fish or two swimming in them. Wires run out of the ponds and back to one of the tents. No signs of anyone.

Marv stands apart from the others, one hand clenching and u-nclenching nervously. He watches the ripples in the collected water and shudders as he remembers what happened last time. He looks around the chaos, wondering what happened to the others and how all their investigations seem to come to a dead end. Choosing to pull himself out of his scary memories, he addresses the others, "So, we've got a couple sets of fresh eyes here. Do you guys see anything we missed?"
Jan 25, 2019 11:12 pm
At the car, David has never saw anything like this at all and gets a little excited about the possibility of a new animal.
Jan 25, 2019 11:24 pm
Marv can almost feel the things crawling on his back again, and his arms itch a little at the thought.
Jan 28, 2019 3:11 pm
Noticing the odd and paranoid behavior of his colleagues, as well as the condition of the dig site, Wilhelm asks, "What exactly happened here? What did you see?" he asks, with a stoic, impenetrable expression.
Jan 30, 2019 3:57 am
Wordlessly, Marv points at the pools of water and the occasional ripples that mar their surface. Dropping his hand, he shudders, then looks up at Wilhelm and smiles sheepishly. "There's something living in there. Big leeches, or something like that. They grab onto you and wriggle. It's..." He laughs nervously and scratches the side of his head.

Feb 7, 2019 11:37 pm
This was the box found, but dropped and forgotten when Marv fell in the hole on your last visit. It had letters and a book inside it.
Feb 8, 2019 3:10 am
Marv leans down to pick up the box and begins to rifle through the letters and books. "Hey! I found something," he says to the others and starts to see what the contents of the box say. "There are some letters and, hopefully these are journals."
Feb 9, 2019 12:12 am
Barry remembers dropping that box now.

The letters appear to be correspondences with crew members family and friends. Some saying normal daily routines and small talk, but the more recent ones speak of worrying and fear of the area and things happening, like accidents.

The book does appear to be a journal.

Marv reads the journal page before handing it off to whoever wants to take a look at it next.

"Well, looks like the professor is completely nuts," he says, his voice despondent. "Part of me hopes that he died in the water, but that last entry there makes me think he's gone back to town."

After letting the others read the page, he says, "What do you all think?"
Feb 10, 2019 4:49 pm
"I agree mate, it sounds like he was completely crazy. 'Down the river path I must go,' it says. Is there a river, or river bed around these parts? That might be a clue to where he's gone," Barry says.
Feb 10, 2019 6:27 pm
You remember the water drains off down to a river when you tuned the pumps on.
Feb 11, 2019 3:29 am
Marv nods to Barry, his eyes lighting up and he turns and hurries down toward the river. "Down this way!" he calls back to the others.

As he gets down there, he begins to look around, almost frantically, for some clue, some sign, something to help resolve the mystery.
Feb 11, 2019 11:38 pm
The sides of the bank are worn, what could almost be a path, but the rains have washed away any trace of prints. The hose sticks out here from the pump.
Feb 15, 2019 4:55 pm
Barry follows the path warily, staying well back from the water.

Wilhelm will follow closely behind, unclear why they are going to a river. When time allows, he will also take hold of the journals, both to see if he can't be brought up to speed and also to assess the mental health of the professor and determine whether or not the man was truly 'nuts.'
Feb 18, 2019 8:41 pm
David will also take a look at the journals over Wilhelm's shoulder as they walk after the young people.
Feb 18, 2019 11:51 pm
As you travel along the path, the mud gives way to stones and a rough path along the water. The land starts to gradually incline and you come to a rock wall and a pool of water with a waterfall running into it. The water churns and bubbles from the water. Stones line either side of the pool and seem to go behind the waterfall, but get slick.
Feb 20, 2019 4:33 am
Marv takes off his shoes and coat and tries to make his way behind the waterfall.

"Well, did you find any clue about where the Professor went?" Barry asks. "Got any idea about where to go next? Seems my idea about the river has been a bit of a bust," he continues with a weak laugh, not meeting Marv's eyes.
Mar 12, 2019 9:29 pm
Marv looks at Barry with an upraised eyebrow. "Well, there's something of interest behind the waterfall. Why don't we all go back there? Besides, I could use some backup if Big Dutch decides that I'm not a friend."
Mar 28, 2019 3:52 am
Hoping that the rest of the group follows him, Marv makes his way quietly back through the waterfall.
Mar 30, 2019 12:00 am
Trying to follow Marv in, the police officer slips and falls in the water and never comes back up, down the stream you see his hand and head bob up and then he goes down a bend and is out of sight. It looked like he waved goodbye almost....
Apr 4, 2019 9:56 pm
Marv, Barry, Dr. Kilgore and Wilhelm, after seeing the police officer float away decide it's time to regroup. They return to town and Barry heads back to the college to try and get some more help. The doctor quickly packs and leaves town, shaken by what he has seen.
Apr 6, 2019 2:39 am
Marv spends his time performing basic maintenance on his hot rod. The strange things he's seen over the past couple days, Has it only been two days? Feels like a lifetime..., stick in his mind, playing over and over as he twists wrenches, cleans connectors and wipes off grease. His eyes wander to take in this small town and its residents, wondering what they think of him, wondering what he thinks of them and if they are aware of the strange goings on at the nearby dig site.

Marv is once again wrenching on his car, adding a new stabilizer giving him +1d10 driving while in this car.

Another vehicle approaches and slows to a creep before stopping and a window rolling down. Marv sees Wilhelm's head poke out, "I've brought the new recruits."

The car turns off and the doors open.
May 13, 2019 12:28 am
A tall, very broad shouldered woman exits the automobile. She wears her blonde hair short but well styled. Her face isn't likely to go launching ships by the thousands, but she isn't exactly ugly either. It would probably help if she wore some makeup and smiled. She is dressed in an off-white silk blouse and black pants with wide legs that almost pass for a floor length skirt until she walks. A black silk scarf her only real accessory. Looking to Marv she extends a hand in greeting.

"Hello, my name is Genevieve Kasper, but you can call me Genie."
May 13, 2019 2:08 am
Marv takes her hand and gives it a firm shake with a small smile. "Genie, it's good to meet you. I'm Marv. I drive," he says, gesturing to the car behind him. "What do you bring to the team?" he asks.

While he waits for her answer, he leans down to look into the vehicle and waves at Wilhelm. "How is it going? I was starting to get a little worried that I'd been abandoned."
May 13, 2019 2:59 am
Genie looks around. She seems a little unsure how to answer Marv. "You'll probably think this a foolish answer...but I'm looking for someone. A man by the name of Lucas Anderson...he was working on his doctorate in archaeology at the dig site. The reports say he...shares the same fate as the other college students. I want to know the truth, because...well...we were to be...that is...we were close."
May 14, 2019 4:49 am
Marv nods to her and says, "That's a good enough reason for me. Do you have any new ideas on where to start? We've been getting all of nowhere so far."
May 17, 2019 7:53 pm
Across the car a dark haired man in a grey double breasted suit steps out. He fastens the suit coat and places a matching fedora on his head as he looks about. He nods at Marv and makes his way around to join the two. Extending his hand he introduces himself."Eliot Sawyer, pleased to meet you." Reaching into his coat he withdraws a cigarette case, pulls one out tapping it twice on the case he lights it. Looking up from under the brim he glances at the two, "Mind if I smoke?" he asks as an after thought.
May 18, 2019 12:54 am
"I'm afraid I don't."
May 18, 2019 1:54 am
Marv waves off the smoke from Jocepi's cigarrette, "No, go ahead," he says. He reaches up and scratches his head and while looking at the other two.

"Well, there's a spot we can go look at, but you're going to need to do a little swimming to get there." He pauses for a few seconds and then asks, "Are the two of you up for that?"
May 18, 2019 3:13 am
"Can we take a boat?"
May 18, 2019 6:09 pm
"I could go for a swim" Eliot says with grin.
May 18, 2019 8:36 pm
Marv chuckles a little. "No boat, sorry. It's behind a small waterfall..."
May 19, 2019 3:17 pm
Genie grimaces and sighs, "Well, if it's the only lead we have, I guess I'll make do.

A tool slips from Marv's hands, clanging to the ground as he looks around nervously. A nervous smile comes over his face, "Ok, well, let's head out." He leans down to pick up the wrench and moves to put it away. "We'll have to drive a bit to get down by the site, then walk from there."
May 22, 2019 10:21 am
"Somethin got you spooked Marv?" Eliot inquires noticing his sudden change in demeanor?
May 24, 2019 4:09 am
Marv, who is clearly spooked, shakes his head. "Nah, I'm good. Just... it just gets a little weird around here, you know?"

He gestures for the others to get in a vehicle, either his or the one they came in, and will drive down to the parking area outside the dig site.

Geine looks dubious, but gets in the car.

When Marv pulls up, the first thing he notices is the abandoned car is gone. A second vehicle tracks lead up to where it was and there are some drag marks, probable from the flat tires. The trail seems the same though and you arrive at the dig site.

"This is the camp? Where..." Genie trails off and her eyes glisten. She wipes them with a handkerchief, trying to hide her reaction from the others. "What happened here?"
Jun 3, 2019 10:09 pm
Marv shrugs. "I couldn't tell you, other than it was abandoned. We're trying to figure out what happened here, but nothing, yet." He hesitates for a second, then in a softer voice says, "You'll want to stay away from the pools of water, too. There's... something in there and it likes blood." He rubs at his arm, then shivers and rubs his shoulders as if remembering something.

"Duly noted. Genie says giving the pool a concerned look as she turns to the collapsed tent. "Have you searched the tent for a journal or any notes?"
Jun 4, 2019 1:56 am
Eliot scratches his head as he surveys the camp. He heads towards the supply tent searching the ground for sugns of struggle.

You see a sleeping bag sitting outside the supply tent, but nothing on the outside seems abnormal. On the inside, the crates and boxes are broke or torn open and everything is gone, but you see no blood or signs of a struggle.

Marv seems lost for a second, but quickly returns to himself. "Ah... yes, we did find a journal." Marv gives it to Genie to inspect.
OOC:
I don't remember who had it, but I imagine I would have kept it as I was staying on for the investigation.
"And, yes, let's head to the waterfall. You're free to look around here before we go. Maybe we missed something. But, we went over this whole area twice," he says. He looks over his shoulder nervously, as if looking for someone else.
Jun 9, 2019 12:19 pm
Eliot's perks up at the mention of the journal, he makes his way back to the others curious as to what answers the book my reveal.
Jun 9, 2019 2:04 pm
Jocepi finds the journal mostly water smeared, with a large amount of time you might be able to piece it togather, like weeks to months, but one page is undamaged, it's the last page.

"Sweet Jesus!" Eliot exclaims. He looks up at Marv, with a side glance to Genie, "Pardon my off time jive Ms. Kasper." Eliot returns his gaze to Marv. "Have you read this?!?."
Jun 10, 2019 10:19 pm
Marv nods with a nervous smile. "Yeah, I've read it, though I confess I don't understand all of what he wrote. He killed people, that much I can tell. He's gone around the bend, I'm sure."
Jun 12, 2019 3:17 pm
"Where is this waterfall you are taking us to?" Eliot asks warily.
Jun 12, 2019 8:46 pm
"Just down here, he says and then guides them down to the bank of the stream and follows it to the waterfall they found last time.
Jun 16, 2019 11:00 pm
The sides of the bank are worn, what could almost be a path, but the rains have washed away any trace of prints from your previous time here.
Jun 19, 2019 12:20 pm
"Is this the cave the Professor alluded to in his journal?" Eliot inquires aloud.
Jun 24, 2019 1:54 pm
Eliot looks to Marv and Genie, "Marv, it looks as though there is more behind the waterfall. You have been here before is there something back there?"
Jun 25, 2019 10:17 pm
Marv seems a little lost in thought, but is snapped back all of the sudden.

Marv answers:

"A friend, I left a friend in there.... and a big cavern. I didn't get a chance to look much though as I came out to get the others, but they wouldn't go on any further. I didn't see anything dangerous in there though."
Jul 8, 2019 1:29 pm
"Alright Marv, lead the way." Eliot says. As they proceed he casually reaches into his jacket and unbuttons the holster strap, freeing his gun to be drawn. Should occasion call for it.
