Just post in here if you have any OOC things to talk about that dont directly relate to the game thread.

Sclasclemski: You mentioned you were pretty new at DMing, especially PbP? Well, you're doing a great job so far! I just wanted to mention that over the past year I've gone through the processing of learning how to DM in the PbP medium, and I've made tons of mistakes! But, that didn't stop our games from being fun. I've also had the privilege of playing in the games of some amazing DMs and have learned lots of tricks.

If you have any questions about DMing, the 5e system, or PbP in general: please don't hesitate to ask! It will not diminish your authority in any way; at the end of the day, you are in charge of this game and this world and I will respect your decisions. I just know that from personal experience, I had some great players and DMs who helped me learn the ropes and were super patient with me as I experimented, and it made all the difference.

In fact, our very own HypCo was one of those people! I wasn't super green when we started Isle of Dread, but I was still figuring PbP out. For example, HypCo might recall how many different ways of doing initiative I tried.

Anyway, just want to let you know that I've been in your shoes and I appreciate you giving it a go. I know how much work this can be. Looking forward to building this story with you :)

I appreciate the kind words...I will do my best...its really fun to run games I'm finding...I never did it as a kid..but I recently got my wife and some friends to try d&d for the first time and they liked it so now I've ran a few sessions for them and its been a really good time. So hopefully this goes well also.

Just a heads up though to you all...on Sunday my wife and I will be leaving on a cruise...I will have wifi but I will probably only have limited access...perhaps once a day...so unfortunately we may experience some heavy slow down but I promise once I return it will be full steam ahead.

I thought nat20’s were auto success on anything not just attacks!?!
According to rules - nat1 and nat20 auto fail/success only apply to attack rolls.

But it's ok to houserule that it applies to everything else, although I'm really not a fan of "auto-fail on nat1 for skill checks". It's just a personal opinion

I’ll have to look that up. Not that I don’t trust you. I just like to read it too lol.

It's in PHB page 194 - "Rolling 1 or 20"

And no such mention in Chapter 7 that relates to skill check (p. 173)

Also here is an answer from D&D designers about this: https://www.sageadvice.eu/2016/05/13/does-a-natural-20-on-a-skill-check-a-critical-automatic-success/

Just moving this comment into the OOC/Chatter thread rather than take up space in the Game thread.
lenpelletier says:
Some people do play that way, and don't let me stop you if you want to make that the rule. According to Player's Handbook a NAT 20 or Nat 1 have no effects on ability checks and saving throws except the Death Saving Throw.

The idea is that if I say "I'm jumping to the moon!" and crits make me auto succeed then I will be able to jump to the moon 5% of the time I try, or even higher if I have advantage. But, some DM's count Nat 20s as auto success anyway and just say no to people trying to roll for impossible things to avoid these problems.

I like it even better for Nat 1s. If you have, say, a stealth skill of +15 because you are a super ninja and you are sneaking through a dark corridor with plenty of cover, you are going to blow that 5% of the time. Kinda spoils the super ninja vibe, right? But some people like the drama of possibly failing every roll, and I am happy to play that way too.

That's the main reason I dislike nat1 auto fail on skills.

But yeah, it's not set in stone :)

I like autofail/auto success. If you have a super ninja with a +15 stealth. He's almost guaranteed to succeed. The autofail makes it to where unplanned for things happen. No one is perfect, maybe the gods wanted you to be seen. I like that it leaves real life error in the game.

HypCo says:
Rymente walks up to the dwarf and crouches next to him "Relax. I know you didn't kill and loot these horses." He turns to his shoulder "No, I wasn't talking to you; of course I know you didn't steal anything. Where would you keep it?" He begins to turn back towards the dwarf before turning back to his shoulder "Yes, I do know for a fact that he is innocent...Because if he wasn't, he'd be covered in horses' blood and have the stolen contents...Because that would be dumb...Fine, I'll ask him." He turns back to the dwarf "Did you do this?" Then he waits a second, another second, a third second before turning back to his shoulder "See. Silent at such a stupid question...Yes, I do know that is the reason...Because it was such a stupid question."
That was the best reaction ever! Great writing HypCo!

LOL agreed.

Heh, thank you. The only thing I can think about now is what would happen if Rymente and Leothorn ever met; I'm pretty sure the universe would just implode.
Jan 13, 2018 12:42 am
Yeah, very nice rp of his quirk.
Btw, the fact that Leylin's quirk isn't visible doesn't mean he doesn't have one :D
It will be revealed down the road ;)

Hey Sclasclemski, do you want us to keep track of xp?
Jan 18, 2018 7:53 pm
The adventure I’m running has xp guide. Beating the goblins and making it down the trail is the first award milestone.

You each get 75xp.

Several gameplay questions :)

Are we using "Tools and Skills Together" from Xanathar's?
Quote:
Tools have more specific applications than skills. The History skill applies to any event in the past. A tool such as a forgery kit is used to make fake objects and little else. Thus, why would a character who has the opportunity to acquire one or the other want to gain a tool proficiency instead of proficiency in a skill?
To make tool proficiencies more attractive choices for the characters, you can use the methods outlined below.
Advantage. If the use of a tool and the use of a skill both apply to a check, and a character is proficient with the tool and the skill, consider allowing the character to make the check with advantage. This simple benefit can go a long way toward encouraging players to pick up tool proficiencies. In the tool descriptions that follow, this benefit is often expressed as additional insight (or something similar), which translates into an increased chance that the check will be a success.
For example:
Quote:
Musical Instruments
Proficiency with a musical instrument indicates you are familiar with the techniques used to play it. You also have knowledge of some songs commonly performed with that instrument.
History. Your expertise aids you in recalling lore related to your instrument.
Performance. Your ability to put on a good show is improved when you incorporate an instrument into your act.
Compose a Tune. As part of a long rest, you can compose a new tune and lyrics for your instrument. You might use this ability to impress a noble or spread scandalous rumors with a catchy tune.
Honestly I did find it strange to have the same bonus when rolling Performance and Musical Instrument check. This gives tools some "edge", in my opinion.

Second question - Sclasclemski, do you use some kind of translator for goblin language? So if Leylin will start speaking goblin I'd use the same one :)
Jan 21, 2018 6:49 pm
I got xanathars guide for Xmas from my wife but honestly I haven’t had a chance to read through it yet. I’m fine with incorporating that rule. Any other rule options we can certainly discuss as we go.

Here is the link to the translator but don’t feel as if you have to use it but I do enjoy being able to feed individual characters information and have them relay it to the geoup
Jan 21, 2018 9:08 pm
Also it doesn’t appear that the translator goes both ways. Just takes English and makes it goblin
