MY EXCITEMENT LEVELS ARE RISING!

Alright, you guys, the first story post is up! Thread is locked for now as we get the characters built and establish a few things OOC, but I just wanted to give you something to whet your appetite, clue you in on the general tone I'm going for, and hopefully provide some guidance for what sort of character you'd like to play.

So a few things:
1. I changed my mind, let's start at 2nd Level.
2. Stick to PHB for now. We can talk about possibly rebuilding later.
3. I mentioned this before but is more obvious now after you've read that intro: the PC's all know each other well. They were once part of a military unit and are now fugitives together.
4. If it's not yet obvious, I'd like this to be fun and goofy, chock-full of pop culture references, maybe not completely off the rails but kinda bonkers.
5. Let's hear some ideas for the name of your team! It will go in the intro, and will also help me give this game a proper title.

Aw beans, I just remembered Naat is going to be busy for the time being. I guess I shouldn't wait to see what class he is going to pick and just go ahead and make the cleric.

If we are going for goofy, I think the A-Team fits pretty well, or maybe just change the first letter like the C-Team. or we can make dirty acronyms, example: Perilous Heroes Under Cysegrian Control or the Phucc's for short.

Maybe it'll come to us in-game?

Yeah I know he's busy moving house. In addition I don't really see us starting the adventure before Valentine's as the next couple of weeks are going to be crazy for me too.
I always thought "A-Team" was short for Able Team. When I did a bit of research in preparation for this game I learned this from Wikipedia:

The show's name comes from the "A-Teams", the nickname coined for U.S. Special Forces' Operational Detachments Alpha (ODA) during the Vietnam War, although this connection was never mentioned on-screen.

Is there a particular setting that you're running this game in, Jabes?

My own homebrew world that I built with plenty of input from my players in the short-lived Dungeon World game I mentioned. And now you'll help me fill in some of the blanks as we play. I'll put up a world-building thread in the next couple of days. :-)

If you're asking whether it's medieval or modern, etc, it's your basic fantasy setting.

Fellas, I'm honored to be on the boards among such fame and prestige. What a Player Roster! I don't know all of you guys directly so far, but I've seen your presence on GP over the last year. To me, this looks like an All-Star Cast for Our-Man-Jabes' 2018 reboot of the 80's classic.

I'm going to get on the Roll Table tonight, start building out a character spec. Main focus will be to get Vehicles-Land Based, because you know we need to work on prepping out our setting-appropriate ACTION VAN!

Hey Jabes, no worries! Struggling here myself, but not as crazy busy as you probably. Been reading your lore docs - super cool world. Sounds like it comes from some work you did for a IRL game?

I'm actually really appreciating the time to think about Baracus. This is the hardest character I've ever built! After rolling those stats I was a deer in the headlights ... too many possibilities. The A-Team helped me focus it down, and now I feel like I'm having time to refine it.

I partly wanted to do a Barbarian because most of my GP characters have been smarty pants. Phineas, Aishwariya, and Leothorn all have ints as high as I could make them. I enjoy playing that type character but I'm at the saturation point. I want to explore something else.

So I've been thinking I want to stick with Baracus but I want to give it a bit more originality rather than just recreated a D&D version of Mr. T that I originally stated. Definitely going to take some notes from the A-Team, but the overall character will also take some cues from kung fu movies. I think it will be fun to still make him rough around the edges, but underneath it he possesses an ageless wisdom. I think this is actually true about Mr. T the actor, although that side of him did not come out much in the A-Team.

Rather than anger, I want to reskin rage as going into a pure mental state. I'm retracting that he's afraid of magic, not sure about that element going further.

I definitely still want to make the A-Team references and keep some of the B.A. Baracus shtick, but if those moments are fewer and further between I think they'll play better.

Jabes, I agree with Len. I've needed the extra time for work obs and also have enjoyed the time to think through the character-- design, redesign, and fine-tuning.
Looking forward to some downtime this weekend. Still want to send you some backstory details for your review, hopefully can write that over the next couple days.
Good luck on the busy season at work, but don't worry about the delay out here. Seems like we all needed some slow burn workshop time anyway.

Len, I predict the Barbarian/Monk combo is going to be a complete blast to play. I have always wanted to see that in action. Not sure if you are into D&D commentary videos or not, but here is a discussion group by these guys Nerdarchy who explore the idea of this very multi-class build.

Thanks for sharing the video DMJ! Their discussion about the mechanics is exactly what I'm thinking about, and with Xanathars there is even more to explore now. But even more so I was inspired by the discussion on the Tranquility vs. Rage storyline that the combination of these two classes brings. I really like that theme for a half-orc who is already straddling the line between Civilized and Wild.

Yo, I think we should think about this as we plan. Retro, y'all.

Action figures for RPG PC's should definitely be a thing!
