The Continent of Arathus

The Continent of Arathus is one of the five major continents of land in this realm. While it may be third in size, the continent features a variety of civilization that dwell on the planet, some good, some bad.

A key thing to notice is that a big mountain range separates the continent in half. Everyone likes to call this mountain rangethe spine. On the northern half of the continent, more domestic civilized life has been taken up by 3 human nations. The Empire of The High North, The Erskine Empire, and the Republic of Xan. At the moment, these three kingdoms are at ease, but there is always a border issue conflict.

On the Southern half of Arathus, life is more diverse and free from the reign of the three empires, who feel the resources spent trying to rule the southern part of the continent are better spent defending their own land from invasion by the other two empires. In the southern half various lords and their coin purses control influence of the area. The more inland you are in Southern Arathus the more likely it is you find bigger cities, funded by extravagantly rich lords.

On the Southwestern End, few cities take up refuge. That being said, they're quite populated. On the South-Eastern side, you're likely to see more Orcish towns. Wandering adventurers are to be wary though, as some Orc towns are known to be a little rough on those frail of heart and body.

The Continent follows the Calendar of Harptos. The Winters can be quite cold in Arathus, but they enjoy nice summers as a respite to the snow.

Some ports have been opened up by Merchants to trade between Continents, but its a dangerous hobby to get started in. Ghazgil is one of the more successful port towns and it's seen its fair share of damage done to it.

A couple of groups in Southern Arathus

The Eagle Protectorate: An allegiance of several lords that feel the need to spread the values of the northern empires into the "uncivilized" masses of the South. Some follow these values almost as though they were a religion. The sigil is a blue and light yellow shield with an eagle on the forefront.

The Disciples of Kelemvor: Some temples have been established on the western half of Southern Arathus constructed by some followers of Kelemvor who have made it their lifes purpose to drive out some of the horrors that seem to eminate out of nowhere.

The Red Hand: One of the more notorious criminal groups in Southern Arathus. They are known for kidnapping family members of lords in hopes of demanding a ransom. They are very efficient in their ways and have evolved a lot from simple highway manning.

Just want to point out incase this is actually getting read that I will be retconning quite a bit of info on Arathus outside of the area you guys are playing in at the moment. The biggest amount of changes will be the nations in North Arathus, the ragtag southeastern Arathus will be a hodgepodge of various lords vying for control of the area, trying to have influence of land like the nations in the north, the great mountain range will host sinister civilized life that will explain why the nations and the southern half don't have much communication between one another, the waterways and the various pirate life abroad and their own excursions to magic as well as having a flavor of both north and south Arathus.

This probably won't get done anytime soon since creating a whole continent is quite a bit of work. The end goal though is to have an environment where i can run 1-2 more campaigns in this world in a couple months. I don't think I'll ever have the games run into each other but each game will have its own flavor(like for instance, northern Arathus would almost certainly be a smaller, political intrigue kind of campaign as opposed to what I'm running now)

Sounds good, world building can be tedious, but rewarding!

Love the idea, especially for my little worldly gnome.

I have been working on mine for way too long. It was on pen and paper in AD&D, but tried doing a web page and updating, but time is cheap and I have neglected it for far too long. Still hoping to finish it. Check it out if you like www.talosrpg.com
