Greenest: Marpenoth 22nd, 1489 DR

Feb 26, 2018 6:41 pm
For the past several days, you have been traveling a road that winds lazily across the rolling grasslands of the Greenfields. Sundown is approaching when you top a rise and see the towen of Greenest just a few short miles away. But instead of the pleasant, welcoming town you expected, you see columns of black smoke rising from burning buildings, running figures that are little more than dots at this distance and a dark, winged shape wheeling low over the keep that rises above the center of the town.

Greenest is being attacked by a Dragon!
OOC:
We are just going to say the group was headed to Greenest at the behest of a request to sure up the defenses of the town, as the surrounding areas have seen increased activity from bandits and kobolds. The town Governor requested adventurers to come and help with the situation. You are approaching the town from the West. See the map
Based on the below decide how you wish to enter the town.

The monk walked along with his group his mind deep in thought, running over the mantras and the rythmical tread of feet inducing an almost trance-like state. His meager yet adequate provisions in hand and his scithe tucked into the belt of his robes he presented an unassuming character.

He absent mindedly recognised the smell of smoke and ash as it reached his nostrils, from deep within himself his mind began to rouse. It was too early in the year for woodfires in his beloved town of Greenest. His mind recognised the danger before he laid eyes on it.

Cresting the hill he looked up, fully aware now, and took the scene in as his stomach dropped. An abysmal scene stretched out before him. His town badly ruined and his mind raced as he thought of its inhabitants. Even those that had shunned him didn't deserve this fate.

He had heard the land was troubled but had assumed it was the usual brigands on the roads cutting off supplies or goblins attacking foresters near the foothills of the mountains. If he had known the destruction wrought on the town he would have run here.

The flick of a shadow on the ground made him glance up and behold the silhouette of a dragon against the sky. He muttered a protective mantra involuntarily at the sight of it.

Lastly, and at the back of his mind, he thought of his small home and garden nestled in the hills above Greenest. He hoped it was safe and in the same moment he chastised himself for being so selfish.

"We must do something, friends," the monk said turning slowly to his companions, anxiety stetched across his face. "I must do something. Those are my people."

He turned and made ready to descend the hill towards the town.

Harold, noticing the carnage, draws his longbow and an arrow, and begins dashing towards the town, going towards a cropping of 3 trees amidst buildings. He is going to look about to determine if he can see farther ahead.

You will need to get closer...and the way I see it you can approach at the following locations:

1. north of the topmost road,
2. on the topmost road
3. between the two roads, by the group of 3 trees
4. on the southern road
5. between the southern road and the river
6. on the north or south sides of the river bank.

Figure out how you want to approach then we will fast forward to that spot and time.

Edit: Positions based on map provided of course..but wanted to clarify

Harold begins heading between the two roads, by the group of 3 trees.

The Dragonborn watches the half-elf he knows to be called Harold rush off. Bartholomew is an imposing chainmailed Dragonborn with golden scales, but a man of few words, mostly. He tries to use those few words to good effect.

"Sah!! We should stick together. Dragons are mighty, mighty creatures!" **I should know** he muses silently with a sigh.

He signals to his group to follow him towards Greenest.
Feb 28, 2018 2:55 am
A young man approaches the edge of town, and notices the group of folk gathering to aid in defense of Greenest. His eyes immediately focus on the Dragon. My arrow shall find its way to your heart, reptile he unslings his longbow from his back in a swift motion, and runs to meet up with the half-elf sporting a bow as well.

The monk hesitates a moment, torn between rushing headlong to help the people of the town and sticking with his companions to be more effective. He took a moment to settle himself, to still his mind, and with a deep sigh nodded his agreement to the dragonborn.

"Then let us go," Varl said, steeling himself.

Varl fell in to step with the Dragonborn, pulling his scithe from his belt and clenching his other fist.

Without warning, as you enter the town five humans dash out from between two buildings on your right. A limping man and three young children race across the street into the open field, and a woman carrying a round shield and a broken spear turns and faces back in the direction from which they came. Eight reptilian humanoids about 2.5 feet tall stream out of the alley on the family’s heels
and fan out around the woman, who looks determined to delay the creatures for as long as possible.
OOC:
You just witnessed the npc's turns...you all can take a turn now, then we will follow the iniative order as postedt.

A dwarf in thick metal armor struggles to keep up with the others. Blasted short legs! he thinks as he runs, panting. I wasn't made fer runnin' ya long legged bastards. Wait up! He draws his warhammer from his back, energy shimmers around it as if it were hot. He grips the hammer in both hands and points it at one of the kobolds, a flash of light streaks from the end of the hammer.

Thorndyke cowers behind a small rise,

A dragon! An actual bloody dragon! he thinks in terrified astonishment.

Since he gained these strange powers he has learned that he doesn't always need to run from a fight, but even with his newly-inflated ego he realises that this particular fight is too much. But then he sees a group of foolhardy folk rushing towards the beast with weapons drawn!

They're going to get themselves killed!

Before he has time to think any further he is up out of his hiding place and running towards them.

"STOP!" he bellows, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? THAT'S A BLOODY DRAGON"
OOC:
Thorndyke begins in a ditch in between the two roads and runs to meet up with the rest of the group to entreat them to retreat.

That can be your action prior to everyone arriving at Greenest and seeing the people....go ahead and act now as if that RP moment has passed.

Bartholomew huffs his way down the hill, his urgency magnified by the innocents in peril. As he moves he draws his sword, closing the gap to the creatures as quickly as he is able.

OOC:
I'll take two turns.
Harold runs thirty feet up, about 15 feet to the west of the commoners and fires a shot at a kobold (K3).

He then drops his bow and pulls out his shortsword and scimitar, runs up to K2
