Episode 1: Pradesh

Mar 1, 2018 1:00 pm
You and the other travelers stream through the Sandalwood Gate (#13) and enter Pradesh, the Jewel of the West. You are swept up in the throng of revelers cheering, singing, and chanting to the beat of drums and gongs. The festive mood is electric, and highly infectious. The flow of people leads southwest, towards the City Square fronting the Great Temple.

The street threads through a courtyard and just as you enter, several horn blasts are sounded. A cheer goes up among the crowd, and the music turns more frenzied. Multicolored powders, hurled from the balconies, rain down on the dancing multitude, blanketing you in gaudy rainbow hues. This is a boon - in this chaos of color no one from Cysegr will recognize you.

You push on, and at every other corner the colorful ritual is repeated. At one crossing, a parade of colorfully arrayed elephants marches past, festooned with fluttering banners, bearing troupes of musicians. One of the elephants, probably the matriarch, peers at you curiously and nods sagely before turning south, leading the procession to the Great Temple of Gajenndra, whose elaborately carved towers rise above the nearby structures.

Moving on, you come upon an inner city wall running roughly east to west, pierced by an open gate that leads to the Temple District. Here, the crowds stop to gawk at several holy men seated atop narrow stone pillars that flank the gate. These ascetics have sworn to live out their lives thus, dispensing wisdom and blessings from on high. Supplicants offer them food and water in little baskets (and the hermits' waste is sent down in another basket). The stink wafting down from their waste and from their unwashed bodies is overwhelming. Best to move on quickly.

A procession walks by bearing a holy child in a gilded litter, her skin dyed gold and her cheeks pierced through and through by thin steel skewers. A beggar, his body covered with boils, shuffles forward, pleading, reaching out to the child goddess. The child turns her head towards the beggar, who gasps and stumbles backward with tears in his eyes. He is completely healed. The child turns again, and almost locks gazes with Rydler, but then her procession moves on, trailing incense smoke and lotus petals.

Aditya is happy to be home and is caught up in the festivities. At first it seems as if he's forgotten you have come to collect your pay but at length he hires a runner to send word to his aunt. "You'll have your gold by the end of the day." he promises. "In the meantime, welcome to Pradesh! Happy Dasai!"
OOC:
R&R! What do you do? Grab some food at the Market district? Onward to the City Square? Hit the bars at the Dock Ward? Or something else? Feel free to rewind and interact with anything that was mentioned, such as the stylites, the elephants, or the golden child. Or anything else.
Mar 1, 2018 7:42 pm
Ybus participates in the festivity of color, going so far as to leap off the cart and crowd-surf the dancing throng. "I am a tai-dai god!" he coughs, inhaling the colored powder as his body is caked in rainbow hues.
Mar 1, 2018 9:40 pm
Rydler rides in the cart, sitting and propping his feet up on some pepper boxes. Listening with disinterest and slight annoyance at Aditya's bold statements and ramblings. Entering the city, he keeps his face lowered to avoid suspicion but as the colors start to flow, he raises to take in the festivities.

As the cart comes to a stop, Rydler grabs Adiya by the shirt and, using his large sleeves, hides his dagger and places the tip firmly into Aditya's stomach. "Let me be crystal; we could of been friends but you've fucked up—not once but twice. Luckily for you, I have business to attend here, giving you a bit extra time to gather the gold you promised us, or else we'd be going to retrieve it right now. The next time we see each other, you better have my gold or this dagger will be giving you more than a friendly peck." he lowers his dagger, releases his grip on Adiya's shirt, and gives him a few playful slaps on the right side of his face "Happy Dasai." He smiles, turns, and leaves the cart. As he walks through the crowd, he makes an effort to get hit by every color blast that he can, intent on covering as much of his identity with color as he can.
OOC:
To the golden child!
Mar 2, 2018 12:29 am
Baracus watches as Ybus dives into the crowd and Rydler roughs up Aditya, fighting off a mild but rising annoyance at the assault on his senses. He blinks away the coloured dust and resists the urge to cover his ears. He follows after Rydler, approaching the procession of the strange golden child. He immediately distrusts the little creature.

Gold corrupts everything it touches.
Mar 2, 2018 4:05 am
Erden smiles at Aditya as he climbs down from the wagon and wiggles his fingers, causing sparks to jump between them, "Gold, quickly. I'd hate to have to use my magic on you," he says as he follows Rydler into the crowd.

"We should all stay together," he advises, nodding sagely, "It's easy to get lost in a city like this, you know!"
Mar 2, 2018 5:29 am
Ybus is already being carried away by the swell, spewing powder from his mouth like a breaching whale.
Mar 2, 2018 6:21 am
"I'll be here with your gold when you come back." Aditya says to Erden as the gnome hops off the wagon. "And keep the crazed halfling safe..." he adds, watching Ybus uncertainly. Suddenly realizing he's alone with Urban, he rubs his bruised neck nervously. "Uh...you wanna grab some curry?"
Mar 2, 2018 8:57 am
"Maybe," Urban answers. "Where is it that you need to go? And where is a place where we can get this horse some boarding and store the wagon, with an inn nearby?"
Mar 2, 2018 4:13 pm
Getting a recommendation from Aditya, Urban calls out to Rydler, Barracus, and Erdan. "I need to get this horse watered and out from under this harness. Also going to keep an eye on Mustachio here." He points flippantly at Aditya with a smirk and eye roll.

"Let's meet up at the __________ Inn, on _____ Street near the ________. By sunset at the latest."
OOC:
Would insert Aditya's suggestion of location in the blanks.
Urban waves and then steers the cart through the crowd, closer to Ybus. He speaks out to the halfling while he is still floating along, carried overhead by the throng of revelers, "Are you going with us or with them? We're going to get curry and chicken nuggets."

OOC:
Haha nice try, J, but no. You've split the party with no rendezvous point/time other than Aditya's "I'll be here with your gold when you come back." Urban, Aditya, and Ybus are still together (for now). Narration incoming.

Naatkinson says:
"We should all stay together," he advises, nodding sagely, "It's easy to get lost in a city like this, you know!"
Erden's voice rang like a bell in Baracus's mind. It was true; cities were not his natural terrain and tracking anything was pretty much impossible in this mess. Cities had their advantages: food and beer always a stone's throw away, lots of deserving people to punch, and his friends seem to enjoy themselves here. But, cities were also loud, crowded, and deceptively dangerous. There was always something trying to distract you while a snake waited to ambush you.

Worst of all, cities were full of incomprehensible rules. He had heard that thieves gets his hand chopped off for taking a purse, but a monster known as a "tax collector" can rob you blind because of some nonsense written on a piece of paper.

Yes, he decided. I will need the guidance of my friends in this land of fools.

He waits for Erden, then lifts Erden up from the crowded street and rests him on his shoulders so he can get a better vantage of the terrain. Now they could not be separated.

"Erden, your guidance as ever is true; let's 'stick together.' "

Urban
Another cheer erupts from the crowd just as you ask your question, and it takes a while for Aditya to understand you amid the din. In the meantime Rydler, Baracus, and Erden disappear from his sight.

"Oh someone will be along soon with your gold and to take the wagon off our hands. We shouldn't stray too far from the Peacock Gate or else your friends won't be able to find you when they return. Speaking of which, shouldn't we collect the halfling?" the spice merchant says.

Ybus
Aditya and Urban scoop you up and push on into the Marketplace. Here, vendors sell rich rugs and delicate silks, exotic flowers and fragrant spices, leather boots and satchels, silver jewelry and ivory carvings, incense and the colored powders everything is blanketed in, jade from Qinglai, gold trinkets from Camaxacal, Pradeshi love potions and healing draughts.

All manner of street performer compete for attention and coin: fortunetellers and sword-swallowers, firebreathers and jugglers, contortionists and snake charmers, street magicians and animal tamers.

Food stalls and hawkers offer delicacies from all across the realms: curried mincemeat pies, grilled whole duck stuffed with berries, poached fish fragrant with fennel and lemon, smoked venison served with a sauce of spiced cherries, sage-cured wild boar sausages baked into pig-shaped pastry crusts, legs of lamb roasted in grape leaves, rice cakes from Bimar, dumplings from Qinglai, round Kortellan flatbreads topped with cheese and slices of cured meat.

There are plenty of sweets as well: dainty orange blossom cakes, blueberry tarts shaped like war galleons complete with spun-sugar sails, chocolate oyster shells hiding peppermint pearls, unicorns made out of marzipan, almond and scorched milk bread pudding, meringue spheres filled with wine-poached pears.

Refreshment stalls offer everything from Cysegrian mead to Camaxacalian mezcal, local palm toddies, tea infusions, even highland stout and elven beer.

Aditya approaches one of the food stalls and orders curried mutton before remembering his purse is empty. He turns to you apologetically, already holding bowls of curry as the vendor looks on expectantly.

What do you do?

Rydler
As yet unaware that Baracus and Erden have decided to follow you, you begin to notice several things about the golden child's procession as you follow in its wake: Though her entourage are dressed as Pradeshi monks many of them appear to be foreigners. The leader, a tall, blond, stern-looking, bearded fellow, makes no pretense and is dressed like a Kaspeathan noble. The palanquin looks suspiciously like a cage. Having crossed the Peacock Gate, the little procession weaves its way through the crowds, making its way south crossing the Temple District.

What do you do?

Baracus & Erden
As you enter the Temple District, it's no less crowded than the Marketplace but the festivities here are decidedly more devout: pilgrims make offerings to holy men and religious statuary, monks at meditation occupy tucked away alcoves relatively shielded from the hubbub, groups of scholars from the nearby Academy huddle around games of shatranj. Some of the shatranj players appear to be placing wagers, drawing angry looks from the pious. You can just see Rydler's back disappear around a corner.

What do you do?

OOC:
DM, cool scene! Hoping to get a bit of information before I decide what Urban does next.

Was Urban able to get a rendezvous site established verbally? A name of an inn and stable that we might base at briefly?

The next I'll try to frame up in narrative then list.
Urban first gives a scowl then an accepting nod to Aditya. He points to the wagon.
"Alright," he says, "Go over there and sit in the wagon with Ybus. I'll pay. Don't spill mine! Be careful. Go."

Urban goes up to the street food vendor and brings out enough money to pay for the food, but then pulls an extra two gold coins, "Hello, friend. I have not been to the city in a long while, a bit turned around in the crowd. Could you help me out with some recommendations and directions?"
OOC:
Urban would like to have a quick and amiable exchange with the vendor. Trying to ask:
1) Is this the only market, or is there another? Would like to move away from here to another area and sell some produce, specifically some really great peppers. Do you have any recommendation of a location or a POC?
2) Similarly, do you know anyone who buys/sells carts and horses?
3) Where is a reputable inn and stable around here? Safety is the highest concern, no bad neighborhoods, but was also hoping ideally to get AWAY FROM the Peacock Gate area. Any suggestions?
Urban keeps an eye on Ybus and Aditya on the cart, staying out of earshot of Aditya.
OOC:
Depending on incoming info from that, may try to adjust the immediate plan. Seems like Aditya has hands on the steering wheel too much for my liking.
Mar 3, 2018 3:33 pm
Baracus is now covered head-to-toe in rainbow powder, and lagging behind Rydler badly (it is hard to squeeze a 400 lbs. half orc through this crowd). He lets out a ferocious roar and a path opens.
OOC:
Unless Erden steers him otherwise, Baracus will continue after Rydler.
Mar 3, 2018 4:29 pm
Erden smiles and cheers as the crowd parts for Baracus, "Don't let him get away from us!" he calls down to his large companion.

As he is carried through the crowd, he thinks back to the last time he was here, mentally listing the names of the the inns and taverns he's been banned from. Golden Goose, Dragonsfoot, The Gilded Apple... he thinks to himself, ticking them off on his fingers and chuckling occasionally; it turns out that people don't appreciate wizards divining their way into winning card games... Who knew?

Thinking back further, he remembers the first time he entered the city after leaving home after an argument with his father. He'd decided to head out and make a name for himself, so he shed his family name to escape the large shadow his father's name cast. It turns out that a lone gnome in the city is a good target for thieves and thugs, so his money was quickly gone and he'd had to turn to gambling to make a living.

He'd left soon after being kicked out of his 12th tavern to join the military and that's where he'd met his current companions. It wasn't often that he thought of his family these days... Maybe it was nearly time to head home to check on them?

Ybus fashions a miniature fishing rod and tackle from bits of timber and string, and uses a hooked chili as bait. He waits patiently next to Aditya, dipping the lure into the bowl of curry.

When Aditya seems ready to voice a question or objection, Ybus shushes him. "Shh," he whispers, "you'll scare 'em away." Pointing at the curry, then placing a finger to Aditya's lips, Ybus returns to a serene pose amidst the chaos of Dasai.

"Oh! Oh!" Ybus exclaims suddenly, kicking his legs in excitement. "I got one! I got-.. Ah, lost it." He sheepishly looks at Aditya and says pinches his fingers across his winking eye. "It was thiiiiiiss big!" he whispers, and falls silent once again, staring at the curry and waiting for his line to twitch.

DMJ says:
Would like to move away from here to another area and sell some produce, specifically some really great peppers.
OOC:
I'd say Baracus ate 10 of the 30 lbs. of chili peppers on the way. A metabolism like that can't afford to turn away free food.
OOC:
Also, Jabes, what a cool city this is! Baracus's one-track mind is definitely not reflective of my curiosity to go interact with all the things.
Mar 4, 2018 12:06 am
Rydler makes sure his dagger is hidden amongst his sleeve and continues to follow after the golden child's procession.
Mar 4, 2018 2:38 am
Baracus makes his way to Rydler, who no doubt has heard his approach. He sees Rydler falling into a more purposeful walk - a silent and practiced tell - and follows suit, moving more quietly and opening his senses to whatever it is that has Rydler's attention.
