The Mountains

Mar 5, 2018 6:04 pm
As night begins to creep back in for the second day of your travels The peaks of the mountains, which had originally broke the horizon around mid day were much closer. The grandeur of the Thulon Mountains was quite a sight. The peaking stone jutted out like daggers towards the sky. Some say the mountains were a result of an ancient battle between pantheon long forgotten to this world and time. The tan and drak brown of the mountains now casts an orange and purple hue from the waning sun that is now falling towards the west, offering little light to give to the beauty of the mountain range.

Elijah, speaking up for the first time all day claims while awestruck "This sight never fails to amaze me. We walk forward in our lives, we get old, and we eventually die. These mountains though will be there for our children's children to admire".

Over time a dirt trail lends itself towards the center of the mountain range, where two arcing pieces of mountain combine to create an arch.

"They call that the Gods Arch. And that is where the bandits will lay in wait, hoping for travellers to venture in before robbing them blind of all their belongings. We can venture closer, but we must do so with care. They may see us and think im leading you to them but if that happens and we disappear, they will think something is up."
he motions you all to follow his hand as he begins to draw a very crudely laid plan on the ground in the dirt.

"If they are in their usual spots, the archers will be near the apex of that arch, as well as a couple on the sides here and here"
he says pointing to some smaller ledges on the sides of the mountain range. His finger nails caked in the wet dirt from the ground.

"Their muscle on the other hand will hide out to catch us from behind while a few more may to stop infront of us. It's important we dont get cornered during this or it will be a hard time trying to get out of this fight unscathed."
Mar 6, 2018 4:22 am
The Dragonborn gazes at the arch with awe, as the area reminds him much of home. Home. The word is so... foreign. I've really been working too much haven't I? he chuckles to himself, and thinks of his brothers cabin in the mountains. Thinking of family makes him realize what may be going through Elijiahs mind. He turns to the broken man, I apologize for my actions. However, you must understand why I got so angry- I don't take kindly to being lied to. he sighs, Look, if you help us get through this, I promise not to incinerate you he chuckles to himself yet again. He turns to the group, Let's formulate a plan yes? Should we send a few to flank in secret, and overwhelm the archers from behind, while I approach from the front?
Mar 6, 2018 11:55 am
Cato listens as the plan starts to form.

"I can try to arch around wide and ascend that east rise. I'll assault as many of those archers as I can while they are still unaware. The others, perhaps I can draw their fire away from those of you who approach on the low ground."

Cato thinks a little longer, and watches Elijah's mannerisms. When he thinks the time is right, he speaks up again.

"Elijah, you have done us fair on this recent part of the journey, as far as I can see. Now it is a moment where the stakes are high. We need every advantage that we can get to succeed on this raid. You probably have been thinking about it already, and I think you know by now: you may have to take up your sword and join the battle for us to win."

Cato lets that set in, then continues. "And if you do fight, I want you to be fighting to save your family in the best way that you know how. You know these bandits, this landmark, better than anyone. I would ask you this then: Where would you wish take position? Where can you best strike these men who are your family's captors but also quickly intervene to protect your wife and child if they are held hostage somewhere nearby? In all of this, our minds are on saving your family as well, just as I know your heart is with them as you consider what is best to do."
Mar 6, 2018 1:43 pm
Asterion has been avoiding Elijah all day. The half-elf is genuinely ashamed of his behavior the night before, threatening the man's family, but he is not one to apologize either. And so he has since then stayed apart, even more quiet and brooding than usual. He looks gazes up at the God Arch, gauging distances. "I'll fight with Skyro." he says quietly.
Mar 6, 2018 4:21 pm
Skyro nods at Asterion in acknowledgement, and as he looks towards Elijiah, an idea sprouts in his mind. Elijiah can "Tie" Asterion and I up as if prisoners, so we can get in close, and wait for a signal from the archer team- in which we will then attack. How's that fare?
Mar 6, 2018 5:07 pm
Elijah gets up from his crouched position and gives a look towards the mountain pass. The opening is about 20-30 feet wide with the cliffs and the arch up about 40 feet on the sides and 60 at the apex of the arch. He gives one last glance before returning to acknowledge Cato.

"My wife and children should be fine, so long as they all perish here. If others arent around for this battle and come back to see the most of them dead they will run off, especially if the leader Mala'Kai is found slain as well. It is for that reason alone I want to take the ground as well. Not only will this allow us to do the Dragonborn's plan but I wish to see Mala'Kai slain with my own eyes, and perhaps even my own blade. His right hand man, Boraicho, is a brute, but I doubt the man could stomach watching his mentor perish. That being said take care if you're in combat with him. Ive heard the crunch of bone when travelers give him a hard time. He is deadly with his mace" Elijah shudders as he recalls the sound of snapping bone and cartilage that he has heard quite a few times.
Mar 6, 2018 5:14 pm
"They're expecting travellers, not prisoners. We'll arouse less suspicion unbound."
Mar 6, 2018 9:21 pm
The Professor, listening to the plan, decided it was time to speak up.

Ahem," he cleared his throat before continuing. "Perhaps, my good fellows, Elijah can lead only I into the pass. I pose an unassuming and non threatening figure and so any attack would further catch them off guard. The rest can follow behind of above and come to our rescue at the right time?"
Mar 6, 2018 11:00 pm
Cato has not heard Deruvid speak as much as the others, but he approaches the dwarf. "Deruvid, would you be willing to join me on the effort to flank those archers? The harder we hit these brigands on the ridge, the better our friends in the pass below will fare."
Mar 6, 2018 11:58 pm
After some chin rubbing and silence Deruvid replies, "I am thinking of a plan to best use my abilities. As long as I can get within range (120') from the apex, I can cast a cloud fog on them and try to take out a few others. I can try to entangle the core group before they get to the rest of you, hopefully slowing them down and making it easier to cut down the weaker ones. I could speak with a flying animal close and have it hopefully scout the situation out for us too."
Mar 7, 2018 10:43 am
"Hmmm," pondered Vortrin. "My dear dwarven friend, that could work. An excellent addition to the plan. Once we see the fog we can commence the attack. That should provide some commensurate protection against the archers whilst Cato here makes his way to the apex and dispatches them. Elijah and I will walk through the arch. That should draw them out of hiding and which point Deruvid can entangle them and the rest of you move in to take care of the them. Is this the plan we should stick to?"
Mar 7, 2018 11:47 am
"Sounds good, except I'm not thrilled about sending Cato all alone up there. Perhaps I should go with him. Though climbing's not my forte."

OOC:
DM AWS, the ridge where the archers are perched, I was picturing that as a steep rise, but one that is possible to hike up normally since it sounds like those guys are coming and going from those firing sites regularly. Is that the right visual for that, or is it more like a cliff to scale with an actual climbing check?
Mar 7, 2018 5:33 pm
OOC:
yeah approaching requires some climbing but not to the extent that I expect a roll for it. The only area that would require a climbing roll would be approaching the mountain head on and trying to get up there. I'm assuming youre going to the side for this
Mar 7, 2018 5:47 pm
OOC:
Well I interpreted it wrong then. It looks to me now like Asterion should go with Cato up the Arch to deal with the archers.

Skyro smiles as everyone contributes ideas, Peeds and Elijiah take the front, Asterion, Cato, and Deruvid take the high ground advantage. As for me... he ponders, Elijiah, do you know of a way I can get behind them without climbing the mountain? While everyone attacks from up front and above, maybe I can bring up the rear?
Mar 8, 2018 5:27 pm
Elijah thinks for a moment. His short beard gets itched with his hands before he shakes his head.

"Im afraid I dont think there is a possible way. If we did that thats a couple days hike around the mountain range. Wouldnt be worth the time spent in my opinion"
Mar 8, 2018 8:54 pm
The Professor scratches at his beard in thought.

"Perhaps there is something I can do with Prestidigitiation to help the ruse
..." he says half posing the question to the group.
Mar 9, 2018 4:24 am
Well damn says the dragonborn. He turns to the gnome, What are you suggesting?
Mar 9, 2018 6:33 pm
Cato sees the talk going back and forth for a while then speaks up.

"My friends, no plan is perfect, but I think the one we have is the best one available. As we have it, Elijah, Skyro, and Vortrin will approach by the low ground trail, going straight for the pass in whatever way they see fit as the situation unfolds. Asterion and I will climb that side ridge in advance. Deruvid can decide which group he goes with, but either way the counter ambush is to be initiated when Deruvid's fog cloud rolls in to obscure the vision of the archers."

Cato let's it sit for a while, but then drops some of his extra baggage and checks his crossbow. "I am going to cache some of my extra weight here so that I can remain as light as possible on the climb."

He looks at each man in turn, giving a confident nod. "We are as ready as we can be. Let's act now and strike out against these brigands, remembering that they are trying to do the same to us. I think they will find though, that we are the stronger force."

He turns to Asterion, "Don't tarry for long packing your comfort items, man! We have quite a climb, and I will not be carrying your extra baggage when you begin to tire half up the rise. Ha!"

Cato is underway, striding through the cover, anxious to see the close lay of the land and what avenues of approach will give the best chance of making the ascension undetected.
Mar 9, 2018 11:35 pm
"I will follow the group heading to the arch, but will stay lower on it within range of the others also."
Mar 10, 2018 2:42 am
OOC:
so unless I have mistook things it appears the set upon plan is skyro vortrin and Elijah towards the center while Deruvid Cato and Asterion take to the arch?
Mar 10, 2018 2:52 am
OOC:
I'm a little confused. Is the professor going alone with Elijiah, or will Skyro be right with them?
Mar 10, 2018 3:14 am
OOC:
I think Skyro is supposed to go take the low trail with Elijah and Vortrin from the dialogue above but i could be mistaken.
Mar 10, 2018 10:32 am
The Professor nods in agreement.

"Then it is decided," he says as Cato concludes the plan's summary. "Skyro and I shall walk behind Elijah as though he is leading us unwittingly into an ambush. Let us go then for I am eager to be done with this distraction to our expedition. Lead on Elijah."

Before progressing, Vortrin casts Mage Armour on himself once again, feeling the emboldening embrace of the spectral armour.
Mar 10, 2018 2:55 pm
Let's get this over with, shall we? he cracks his neck, and looks to the group, Good luck to all of you. If you die, I'll kill you. he winks, and turns to Elijiah, After you.

"Don't be so hasty yet my new friends, shall I commune with a flying animal to discover the exact locations of the archers and others so we can be best prepared?"
Mar 10, 2018 5:05 pm
Skyro sighs, I suppose I can wait a little longer. a frown appears on his face, as he seems eager to get into the action.
Mar 11, 2018 9:26 am
"An agreeable contribution, my dwarven friend," Vortrin said, eager at the chance to see such a feat for his own scholarly pursuits.
Mar 11, 2018 6:19 pm
"Perhaps another time my friend, let's keep heading up to the arch so we don't miss our opportunity for surprise."
Mar 12, 2018 3:22 pm
As everyone starts approaching their positions you begin to see the full shape of the mountainside. The splendor of dusk painting itself on the rocky landscape is beginning to wane as night approaches from the east. An occasional gentle breeze of wind keeps you at focus as it brings across some chilly air.

Thick in the cover of some foliage, Deruvid, Asterion, and Cato begin their ascent on the right side of the mountain range. It is not long before two humans appear ahead of you by about 60 Feet (20 Yards). Both seem to be armed with crossbows, and you can tell from here that they also have a sword sheathed around their sides. About 180 Feet (60 Yards) away you do see perhaps another man sporting the top of the arch, hidden behind some rocks as it appears he has seen something.

On the ground below Elijah, Vortrin, and Skyro begin to trek into the mountainside. You immediately get the feeling you are being watched but as you look around all you can see is the shadowy sides of the mountains. The area you are in is a little dark, as most light stops going into this part of the opening at this time of day.

As you three begin to sneak your way closer towards the archers, one of them hears a voice. You freeze, tensing beneath the somewhat dry dirt, still moist from the rain a day and a half prior and hide behind some jagged boulders. The archer turns his head and looks your way.

"You hear anything Jarvis?"

"You must be hearing things again Davey. Maybe lay off the ale the next time youre in town aye? Oi Look! Elijahs brought us some fools again. Look at that puny little Gnome! Figure Boris could punt him from here to Fundy I betcha"

"Ha! Aint that right! I guess youre right about me eharing things. Could be the gold jingling on that Dragonborns gold pouch. I can nearly hear it singing to me!"
OOC:
A majority of you passed the stealth check so youre all set
As you three venture closer into the arch a man comes out ladden in medium armor that would befit a noble, and a sword that appears razor sharp and finely crafted with studs coming down the sheath of a sapphire color. To the right of him is a tall lurking half-orc with a mace that appears stained with dried blood on it. Its almost as if the muscles on this half-orc had muscles. The man begins to speak

"Now now. Thats as far as you have to go. Im afraid to pass there is a toll you're going to have to pay. Now before you turn around and tell me you dont want to pay you should know that theres also a price for not paying, whether you pass or not" as he slaps the half-orcs shoulder, A half smirk appears on him as he is acknowledged.

"If you had any wits about you, you wouldve known beforehand that you had walked into a trap unwary adventurers. Look around if you wish but youll find that the only way you'll make it out of this mountain alive is by kindly leaving us with all of your valuables."

In terms of preparatory action, I would like to use Prestidigitation to conjure the visual illusion and sound of a large sack of gold coins hoisted over my shoulder. I would also like to conjure an illusion of hefty chains and shackles tying Skyro's hands together and having the chain lead to my hand
"Greetings, gentlemen," The Professor said cheerfully, hunching over and hobbling to exaggerate his age and pretending not to hear the talk of tolls. "How goes it on this fine evening? I say you wouldn't happen to know a good place to set up camp would you? Carrying this sack of gold coins this long distance has ruined my back and I could do with an ale by a fire. Friend Elijah hear has been good enough to guide us through this pass, promising it as a shortcut on our passage. And never mind this lizard creature, dumb as an ox he is. He is nought but a captured slave I intend to sell for peasant work at our destination."
Mar 13, 2018 7:29 am
Asterion is apprehensive as he waits, hand on sword hilt, for Deruvid's signal to begin. It's not that he fears a fight, it's because it will mean casting his spells - casting those spells means communing with the dark power that resides in him - something that always fills him with dread.

The Professor cursed his carelessness. Foolish gnome, he thought to himself.

"Well of course he can carry his weapon," The Professor said, trying to think on his feet. "We are travelling through what some would call dangerous territory don't you know, you boys should be careful. I can easily unshackle him should I need him to defend us....or should he wish to partake in a duel. Always dueling, this one, I tell you! What will your new owners think, lizard?"

"Good work, keep challenging for a duel," The Professor muttered quietly in draconic to Skyro.

"Alas," The Professor continued to the bandits, deliberately exaggerating the sound of gold coins clinking together in the sack. "Whilst I would like to relieve myself of the sheer weight of this sack of gold, I don't think it belongs to you my good fellow. But I am a betting man, if Boraicho here can best this lizard creature then perhaps I could hand it over and continue on my way? At least it would be one less mouth to feed for me. Win-win I guess."

An Arrow shoots out and hits the dirt at Vortrins feet. Looking above he sees an archer directly above him taking a warning shot.

"How about we just beat you senseless, take your gold and belongings, and dump your bodies into the bay when were done with you. "Have you ever heard the tale of the spider and the fly?" The Professor whispers, "I bet you think we are the flies don't you?"

"Duel him or not it bothers me none," raising his voice so even the archer could hear him.
Letting the seemingly hefty sack of gold fall from his shoulder, The Professor makes to pass it to the bandits and at the last minute fumbles with it causing hundreds of gold coins to fall clinking to the ground and running in every direction through the dirt and rocks at the bandit's feet.

Using the falling coins as a distraction, The Professor casts magic missiles on the bandit leader. He watches as all three magical darts of energy shoot from his outstretched hand toward the bandit leader.

Despite the comfort of his Mage Armour, The Professor then takes up a stance to Dodge any retaliatory attacks.

As this happens, a thick cloud of fog accumulates over the entire arch, leaving the archer there blinded unable to see. He attempts to scramble out of the thick fog but cannot see.

Within halves of seconds, Cato's shot rings out from his crossbow and hits one of the archers flush in the back who cries out in pain, and begins to swivel around. It is then Asterions hex is placed upon him and a bell rings in the air. In what can be described as ugly the skin of the archer begins to dissipate and leave only bone, and the curse that was placed on that archer has now spread to his friend, who witnesses the bubbling demise of his friend and begins to panic and pull up his bow.

Vortrin getting to a wall wont provide cover vs the archers. If you take dodge, the firebolt cant be used. If you choose the firebolt, I need an attack roll 1d20+your spellcasting attack bonus which is 6

The archers are the only one left, you can use a dodge action to cause the archers to get disadvantage on attack rolls made against you Skyro

Target priority would be active opponents, possibly the one facing Asterion (with a hope to gain Sneak Attack application for the adjacent opponent). If not then perhaps the other shooter who was Blinded?

Elijah attempts to lay low, scrambling to get next to the wall to avoid getting hit by an arrow.

A bell noise is heard a second time but this time it does not produce the same results as the first toll as the archer remains alive, albeit expecting his own demise.

Catos shot perhaps due to his injured shoulder goes wide and the arrow sticks itself into the other side of the mountain.

Skyro attempts to throw a Javelin into the fog cloud but no confirmation of a wounding strike can be heard and eventually the javelin rattles back down.

Deruvids flame ignites and hits the archer flush in the shoulder, with little embers bouncing in the air in an orange and red glow as it scorches the archer. Even Asterion at his distance can feel the heat from the flame.

Vortrins firebolt misfires and shoots back down in a quick and sudden angle. Having just enough time to lower your head as it comes back down the firebolt strikes your pack slightly, causing a small flame to begin in your gear, some scrolls can be seen ignited from the firebolt, but arent damaged so long as the flame is put out this round.

---------------------------

The left archers will start running backwards and towards the arch in an attempt to rendezvous and regroup with the center archer.

The center archer will still try to make it out of the fog cloud. He is still unable to escape it, closely clutching to the rock and moving slowly, unable to see and relying on the shouts of his allies.

The right archer throws down his crossbow and produces a scimitar. He slashes it at Asterion but the slash of the blade is not steady enough and doesnt break armor!

Vortrin cries out in anguish as his invaluable scrolls smolder.

Ignoring all danger, he drops his pack and pats frantically at the flames licking the parchments in his pack. Cursing himself for rushing the spell and causing the misfire he decided it was best to take it out on the enemy.

"You uncivilised, education-hating scoundrels," The Professor yells up at the remaining archers. "Now its personal!"

Skyros Javelin throw strikes true and hits one of the archers in the gut who stumbles and bends over in pain.

Asterions blade wounds the archer mortally before a black flame leaps out and seals the deal for the poor soul.

Cato shoots into the fog. It takes a moment but a shout is heard as the archer in the fog has taken an arrow somewhere.

Vortrin frantically pats his treasured scrolls, putting out the flames and saving his scrolls from complete destruction.

Elijiah quickly darts to the bandit leaders body and begins picking up his daggers. He hastily throws one at the wounded archer.

Deruvids vines begin to entangle the left archers. The unwounded archer cant muster himself free and finds himself restrained completely. Cato surveys the area on the right side, making sure there are no moving or hidden targets and that all of the opponents down are completely neutralized.

Once convinced that all is clear, he calls out to his companions, in his own group and the others below. He tries to get communication going to see if all enemies are down and to check for injuries among the team.

All the while, he keeps aim on the last entangled archer across the way and yells out to him, "Do not struggle or try to break free. If you do, you will be killed like the others. All of your friends are dead. If you are willing to cooperate, you may have a chance to earn your life. Do you understand?"

The Nat 20 counts no matter the modifier. However, Your range is outside the weapons normal range (but inside the weapons long range) and needs disadvantage added. Basically speaking its unlikely that this 20 is gonna stay. This changed over from 4 to 5 when long range used to be a -2 modifier instead of complete disadvantage iirc

In this circumstance, wouldn't the first feature of Cato's Sharpshooter Feat help him avoid Disadvantage and apply the Attack as if it were normal?

Youre correct, i skipped over that line on accident when reading it
Catos shot springs out of the crossbow and whistles across the Mountain with purpose. In almost as soon as you all heard Cato shout you see a glistening bolt glowing off the remaining sunlight before finding its mark straight into the heart of the entangled archer. The shot was fatal nearly instantaneously, and the archers head droops and his limbs go limp.

The fight, being well planned before hand, tested the budding groups abilities to work as a team to take down an evil group of bandits. Somewhere along this journey, you've learned something from all of this, which is bound to help you for later encounters down the road.

Cato tries to catch up with Elijah before he gets too far. He first asks how Elijah will be reunited with his family. Are they nearby and does he suspect any further danger or guard over them? Cato makes himself available, also knowing that the others might help as well, if there is still more to do in order to ensure the family's recovery.

Cato also asks the redeemed man if there is a camp nearby that was used by the bandits, somewhere they might stay under good shelter and protection for the night.

After that Cato backtracks a bit, returning to the last halt site to recover his cached equipment. Then he is ready to act on whatever might be coming next as everyone weighs in.

Elijah points you toward where they make camp at deeper into the canyon. Its not much more than a further walk into the canyon like area than you were before. He doesnt expect there to be any danger now that the group is dead and any likely stragglers will find this area unmanned and know not to press things. He even invites you back to his place back in town should you ever find the need to visit.

Some time elapses as you guys gather your things and meet up near the mountain range. Some quick scrounging of the area and the bodies nets you 5 gp worth of coinage. Along with that, you are able to find a cache that contains a cask that contains some ale left in it and a bottle of fine wine.

Nighttime is approaching, and the embers of your torches are the only things that light up the area as you find yourself in the middle of the mountain range on a cool briskly night

The night goes on without a hitch. During your night watches the sky looks clear and the stars shine brightly onto the cold ground of Arathus. Thoughts of the previously battle may still be stirring in your mind. For some, it may have been their first time ending the life of another. For others, it may just be another that grows as long as it is hard to remember. For the first time though, things seem to be running cohesively with this small cohort of 5 adventurers trying to find Isaac's retreat.

Morning comes before you know it, and you're off to locate this retreat in the caverns. The trek through the mountains via the cutout is a lot quicker than going around the mountains and by midday you've reached the caverns. The cutout leads you to a huge cliffside where a path is carved out serpentine style down the side of the cliff. The ground feels solid enough that a trek forward wouldnt seem dangerous, but it is slightly narrow so you may find it somewhat uncomfortable that a fall of well over 400 feet awaits you if you carelessly stumble off the side.

A step forward and a look below is a breathtaking sight. Below is a bay of water, with waves crashing onto the sides of the rocks. To your left the bay turns into the Arathian Ocean. Out way far in the distance from your height you can see the masts of some merchant ships bobbing across the choppy waters. To your right is an embankment made of sand and loose rock that fell off the cliffs. The serpentine pathway splits to go both to this embankment, as well as one path that leads across to the other side of the bay and another path made by miners presumably to explore some of the various caves and caverns that eat into the cliff side like cavities.
Mar 30, 2018 10:52 am

Make sure there isnt a trap waiting for you once you get there. he grunts, Damn! I thought there was more there, but that's all.

It appears to you that these stones are infact imbued with some sort of magic as some sort of rune system. Looking into the cave a little you see some cavities in the sides of the caves that seem to be the source of where these rocks have come from, although there are definitely mroe cavities than there are stones in the cart.

Just then however you hear some shuffling of steps from deeper inside the cave, and a little talking but you are not able to hear the exact words from your position
