OOC:
Is my black bear reacting to them?
Rolana moves to silently touch Aetoris' arm, directing his attention to the shadowy figures approaching the bulette corpse. With a whispered command to the black bear to watch the activity, she creeps quietly to the sleeping Kuz and nudges him.

Opening his eyes slowy, Kuz speaks softly, not wanting to wake the others, "Kuz turn to watch camp ? Who I watch with ?"

Shaking her head, Rolana whispers, No, Champion, we just have some unexpected visitors inspecting the corpse. Could be scavenger beasts. Thought we should wake you just in case, though.

Pulling up the hood of her cloak, Rolana signals the black bear to follow at a discreet distance and creeps silently out of the firelight, just far enough to allow her darkvision to give her a more detailed accounting of the shadowy creatures.

Silently taking his shield and axe in hand, Kuz positions himself with the campfire at his back, facing the shadowy figures. Kuz squints his eyes trying to see his possible foes, and ready's himself to let a huge warcry if there is any sign of danger, hopefully waking his allies and grabbing all the attention on himself.

@Rolana: You black bear starts to posture threateningly, protectively and growls. As you shadow the creatures, you can't make out all of thr details but they do seem to be a group of bears but there's something off about them. The sounds they make do not sound like any bear that you've ever heard of.

Do you wish to move closer? If so, I'd like another stealth check.

@The main group:
The creatures back away from Kux's intimidating warcry. They don't seem to be threatening you. They move away from the party and vanish into the darkness. You still hear them but they seem to be moving to the east away from the village and towards a small forest.

What do you do?

Aetoris nods and moves quietly through the camp, trying to get close enough to make out the threat.
OOC:
Boots of elvenkind make steps silent, advantage on stealth checks to move quietly. Reliable talent makes the lowest roll a 10, expertise gives double proficiency so smallest stealth is 25 if the best roll of the two is lower than that. Same with sight based perception because of the goggles. Aetoris will move with an arrow on his bowstring, ready to fire at the slightest movement.

Rolls

Stealth - (1d20+15, 1d20+15)

1d20+15 : (8) + 15 = 23

1d20+15 : (15) + 15 = 30

Perception - (1d20+15, 1d20+15)

1d20+15 : (13) + 15 = 28

1d20+15 : (15) + 15 = 30

When Aetoris is close enough to hear, Rolana says softly, Our visitors are shaped like bears, but I don't think that's what they really are. They don't behave or sound right, and my bear friend here seems to agree.

She points in the direction that the creatures have fled. They don't seem interested in attacking us or the village, but I'd really like to know why they were snooping around that carcass. I wonder if someone is trying to retrieve that crystal.

Turning toward everyone who woke up after Kuz's warcry, she says, Shall we follow them into that forest, or finish our rest and move out in the morning as planned?
May 7, 2018 7:44 pm
Kuz's battlecry doesn't quite wake Oma Salie, no, there's more needed for that. She does however turn, angrily mumbling Shut up Wrenn, and stop touching my mushrooms! then just snoring VERY loudly.

Without rising from her bed roll Fah'lin answers Rolana. "With the other two having wandered off, I am in favor of staying. If our curiosity cannot be abated, I could follow unseen for an hour and report back."

Pyrrha bolts upright as she hears the champion's roar, darting her weary eyes back and forth to try and make sense of the situation. She lets out a huge sigh when she sees that no one seems tense. Her breathing however, does not slow. Turning her head as if to better hear the spymaster, her regal bearing is all but shattered in the moonlight, and her hair lies matted like a frayed rope. She pants in reply, "I could follow them and come back with Fah'lin if necessary. No animal suspects a bird to be watching them."

Aetoris makes it back to Rolana as she's talking to the others. You're right Rolana. They are owlbears, nasty if you don't know how to handle them. Any villagers out and about may be at risk, but I think they were just here to get food. They don't have anything like that unnatural scar on the bulette, so it may just be a nest of them. When we set out in the morning, we'll warn them that a nest exists. They should reach out to some aspiring young adventurers. It would be a good test for them. If someone wants to track them to get a nest location, fine by me. he says when he materializes out of the dead of night near the group.
May 8, 2018 5:09 pm
Grimacing, Rolana says, Ugh, owlbears. I hate those things. But no, I don't think we should ask anyone to give up their much-needed rest to track them. The party who takes that on shouldn't have much trouble locating the nest.

To the group, she adds, Apologies for the the disturbance, friends. But you needn't trouble yourselves further. Enjoy your remaining rest time.

Returning to her previous station and her oh-so-relaxed-looking posture, Rolana looks over the dragonchess board and asks Aetoris, Whose move was it?
May 8, 2018 6:51 pm
Before going back to sleep, Kuz sits against a tree, closes his eyes and mentally asks his Bear spirit..."Oh greaav mikar ukpiriav, pleauke ukhow alnej nalkren shum owlbearuk avhere ayh agh nalkramal. Jiak ukuukpecav avhaav um avhe adulavuk ayh katu, avhe young oneuk ayh ukavill shal avhe neukav, waiavaumn avheir nauk-avurn. Agh pleauke avrausan again avo gimb avhe vadokan zoneuk um lat saib"

"I beg you, don't dismiss them so soon. It's almost unheard of to see a group of owlbears more than two strong. Something may be amiss. Perhaps these crystals and the magical interferences in Southwatch are disrupting the balance here. Perhaps it only affects those creatures touched by magic themselves. That would explain why we've seen both bulettes and owlbears acting out of sorts, but not sparrows and wolves."

Your third watch passes without incident and you all wake with the dawn.

How do you intend to travel south? Horse, fly or transport via plants?

When the sun rouses, Aetoris is already on his feet, walking the camp, stretching out his legs. He gently wakes Oma, making sure that his face is the first thing she sees when she wakes.

Good morning Oma Salie. Time to rouse. Make a quick tea, we move in less than an hour. he says, accustomed to waking her up with an immediate urgency if he had any hope of getting them moving in a timely fashion.
May 10, 2018 11:01 pm
When Aetoris wakes her Oma tries to shove him away but he dodges her hand easily. She grunts, starting to move. yeah, yeah, I'm up! She grabs her portable hole, trying to unfold it, but not getting a grip on an edge. She frowns, trying again and then suddenly remembering there's a very good reason why she can't open it. Mother of fungi! She stands up, stomping her way over to Aetoris and shoving the black piece of cloth up towards his face. I can't make my own damn tea! I'm telling you Aety, if that thing wasn't so goddamn good it would be far, far away from me! Can you please make some strong black tea for me? She stomps off again, starting to pack her bag and bedroll, then tries to fix her hair that's a great resemblance of a famous painting of an even more famous scientist, all the while muttering to herself.

Rolana wakes easily - she always has, much to her parents' delight and occasional dismay during her childhood - and runs efficiently through her morning routine for grooming on the road. Her hair is slightly sleep-mussed, but nothing dramatic. Running a brush through it quickly puts it right. There have been times when her hair was in wild disarray in the morning, but usually only because of her artful efforts, so she could sell a role she was playing. Or after a night of, well, exuberant activity.

As she finishes a light breakfast and a cup of strong black tea, she asks, So how shall we be moving, then? If we are traveling by plants, we need to make arrangements for our mounts. I want to make sure Feyborn is well seen to. She's served me well on several occasions.
