As the creature's come into view Tinwë casts a powerful invisibility spell and turns to face them. Here's hoping they don't see through invisibility... She exhales calmly, then flies up into the air. She streaks down into the middle of the group smashes into the ground, releasing a wave of thunderous light in a ripple about her. Hopefully having bought Fah'lin and the halfling some time, she darts after them through the air with all the speed she can muster.

Greater Invisibility, then Action Surge to cast Destructive Wave (Con save DC 17), then 1 ki point to Dash away (making my movement 80 ft for the turn)

Arina says:
OOC:
@Fah'lin. Just to clarify. You are taking the dash action, yes?
OOC:
Sorry...yes...forgot there was a term for that. But unless there is some obvious way to take out these new creatures getting some space between us is her first goal.
Jun 7, 2018 6:35 am
The creatures rush up and surround Fah'lin. As she kicks the broom off of the ground several of them attempt to claw her and the halfling.
OOC:
Make a dexterity saving throw please.
Fah'lin kicks off the ground and the broom sprints up and into the air. The swarm of weird insect-reptilian hybrids rush up the trees next to her however, luckily for you, Fah'lin's broom is faster than their climbing speed. Each creature has six legs and two claw like appendages, but a large raptor like mouth full of serated teeth. They each have two eyes, set forwards in the skull like a predators. Their bodies are composed of three parts like an insect and they have what appears to be either a thick carapace or a bony ridge-like armour.

Tinwe leaps up and punches the ground. As she does so a huge wave of destructive energy radiates out from her. She catches a bunch of the swarm in her spell but rather than wait to see tge aftermatg, she flies straight up to where Fah'lin and her halfling passenger are as they break through the canopy and head towards Fort Naleth.

The creatures have lost sight of you and you can move much faster than they can. After a few moments they seem to have given up on the chase.

The halfling is breathing very heavily. Oh thank you. Pelor bless you and your house! Thank Pelor. Oh goodness. Let's get out of here.

You take the halfling back to the fort and Lord Byron, Aetoris and the others are all standing there. Lord Byron is sweating a little as if he were taking a difficult examination or perhaps being asked questions that he doesn't fully understand.

Don't suppose I could trouble you for a horse? Only I want to get as far away from here as... the halfling says to Aetoris and then he spots Rolana.
Oh crap! he says under his breath.

@Ryestro: You won initiative. What do you do?

At the sight of the halfling, Rolana/Sola feels a small bloom of hope in her chest. Her smile contains genuine delight, though she only lets a tiny amount of it show. It wouldn't do for the king's diplomatic attache to seem overly familiar with such a dubious person, after all. At least, not in the presence of the idiot Lord Byron.

Drag my Moss, it's Sahl Nargan, she says, using thieves' cant to tell the halfling, "Follow my lead." To the others, she explains, A former servant of mine. He left my employment a few years ago to set up a small shop - in Southwatch.

To Sahl, she says, My goodness, you look as though you've been through the wringer. I'm guessing that my associates came upon you in something like the nick of time. What enormous luck for you. To the steward, she adds, Please have food and drink brought for our guest, and for my friends here. She gestures toward Fah'lin and Tinwe, who look a bit windblown themselves.

The hand Rolana/Sola places on Sahl's shoulder appears to be a gesture offering comfort and protection, but there's a hint of steel in her grip that communicates a command lurking behind the facade of hospitality. Now, Sahl Nargan, we're all very anxious to hear everything you can tell us about what's happening in Southwatch. Leave no detail out. Anything could be a clue we can use to rescue the city.
Jun 7, 2018 7:55 am
Oh my goodness. Sola. How are you old friend? I would love to help you in exchange for a fast horse. Would that be possible? Sahl asks in a hopeful bordering on desperate tone. He makes the thieves cant signal for compensation / bribe. He is smiling but he also looks very nervous.
OOC:
I don't think we need the green anymore. I think that everyone is here except for Ryestro.
Jun 7, 2018 8:21 am
I'm certain we can provide you with a horse, if you're determined to keep traveling. But for now, we really need to hear about Southwatch. She makes a subtle sign to ask if he's running from someone.
Jun 8, 2018 3:08 am
Fah'lin lands beside the halfling somewhat out of breath (and obviously oblivious to the secondary conversation). "I am glad that you have found an old friend, but we really need to know what was going on back there. I disagree that we can let the gentleman leave until he has been completely debriefed."

Without batting an eye, Rolana says, Yes, I'm sure Sahl will be happy to tell us what he knows. Rest easy, my friend.

Returning her attention to Sahl, she is concerned. The desperation he's trying valiantly to disguise is plain to her. She needs to get him talking, and fast, but she doesn't want Lord Byron and his cronies privy to all the details. Confidential informants are only useful, after all, when they are confidential.

Making a quick decision, she speaks to him in Halfling. You need to tell us what you were doing out there by the mountain, Sahl, and you need to brief us on the situation in Southwatch. I can see that you're scared about something. You can tell me everything about that part in private, but you need to give them an edited version of the story now. What's going on?

Tinwë gratefully accepts a beverage from one of the servants. She taps the glass thoughtfully as the conversation continues. What were those odd creatures we saw...
OOC:
Making some knowledge rolls? Maybe just pick the most pertinent one and ignore the rest?
She nearly chokes on her drink when Fah'lin finishes her statement about their new halfling friend. "Dear Fah'lin, don't let Kuz hear you say such things. He might get jealous." She snickers into her cup.

Oma nods when Sola tells her where Fah'lin and Tinwë are, then gets up from the chair, kneeling down next to Pyrrha, scratching her under her chin while whispering to her to not raise suspicion. You can come with me to the edge of the shield too, of course, but perhaps you rather stay here, it's up to you. Just as she rises Fah'lin, Tinwë and the halfling enter the great hall. The smile on her face from seeing them quickly fades away as she understands it's not been a completely safe return. She moves directly besides Aetoris and pulls the folded portable hole from her pocket, handing it to him, indicating she thinks they all need tea. But Sola already settles that with a servant and Oma sighs, tucking the hole back in her pocket.
Getting the feeling everybody is being so secretive because of the presence of Lord Byron Oma smiles slightly, crossing her arms. Hey, anyone else wondering how many men Kuz has accidentally hurt digging those trenches? If Aetoris is done discussion things, perhaps you should go check on your men, Lord Byron. She hopes this will distract him enough from the tense atmosphere in the room so they can finally hear what happened.

OOC:
@Tinwe: I've got a lot of information to give out here, I'll try to remember to get to your questions a little later.
Lord Byron looks at the halfling and then listens to Oma Salie and nods. By your leave my lord, he bows to Aetoris and leaves the great hall.

Then Sahl begins his report.
I don't know everything but from what I can piece together everything started about four days ago. I don't know who noticed first but magic stopped working in Southwatch sometime in the middle of the night. The only reason I know this is because one of my associates happened to he in the hospital at the time. He said that it was absolute chaos. Priests and clerics couldn't understand why Pelor wasn't answering their prayers but we didn't know that we were under attack until much later.

I'm not a hundred percent sure of the time, but several hours before dawn, massive sink holes opened up in the middle of the city and a host of lizard-bug things emerged and attacked. The upper quarter was their first target and it fell very quickly. Without anyone organizing the city's defences, the bugs swept through the city and killed everyone who stepped out of their houses. The streets ran red with blood.

The the bugs' masters arrived. I haven't personally seen one but others say they look like drow but their faces are always covered in a weird looking black helmet.

After a short while we all felt someone contacting us via some sort of magical telelpathy. The voice said that if we stayed in our houses then we would be safe but if we left our houses then we would be killed.

There is some resistence of course. The first group tried to use the sewers. Big mistake. It turns out that the bugs don't like sunlight. But underground they are incredibly swift and dangerous.

Some like us, tried to run. I have no idea what happened to them but I'm guessing that the forests surrounding Southwatch are infested with the creatures. My group had twenty members when we started and I'm the only one who made it.

All the while he signals to Rolana the organization has been compromised. It's every man for themselves.

OOC:
Is the organization he's referring to Rolana's spy network?

Also, who's in the room now that Lord Byron's gone? Is it just members of our party?

OOC:
Kuz is probably still digging trenches, at least until Lord Byron comes by or somebody sends for him.
Jun 8, 2018 2:17 pm
OOC:
I'm proceeding under the assumption that the only people left in the great hall are members of the party. If commander Justin or any other NPC is there, then disregard this post.
Rolana/Sola's expression is grim by the time Sahl finishes his tale. If her network of operatives and informants is no longer intact, her personal toolkit is now even lighter, given that her magical items wouldn't work in the presence of the black crystals.

Sahl, the people in this room have my complete confidence, and you can speak freely in front of them until someone else arrives.

What have you left out of your story? Is Millicent still alive?
, referring to Sahl's handler, a human woman who'd been living as dressmaker in Southwatch for years.

And if we give you that horse, where are you planning to go?

"We have encountered these black crystals. They seem to be be the reason magic does not function properly. I know you were hurried, but did you see anything like them?"
OOC:
I wouldn't normally rush the witness like this...but pbp...

Also...For my actual knowledge...have we verified that if one is in tune with a crystal, all magic items work normally? I am now thinking we all need to work to acquire one. I am certain we need to get at least one more to see if being attuned bypasses the effect in some way.
Jun 8, 2018 6:06 pm
OOC:
That's a good idea. I was thinking that us non-magical folk couldn't use them, but anyone can attune to a specific magical item, can't they?
Jun 8, 2018 7:16 pm
OOC:
You "nonmagical" folk are just as magical as the rest of us, you just haven't found the magic within yet:-p!

But no, magic items still don't work when attuned to the crystal EXCEPT the other items you're attuned to: therefore Oma can't open the portable hole herself, or fly. She can use spells effectively.

I am trying to get Oma to the range of the mother-of-all-crystals, attuned to her shard and all, to test the influence of one on the other. These creatures make things more difficult, but I still think it's a good step forward.
Jun 9, 2018 9:41 am
OOC:
@Rolana. You're not entirely sure but probably. Thieves cant is'nt a very sophisticated language. He either means his business, your spy network or perhaps the thieves guild in Southwatch.
I haven't seen anything like that crystal but the reports I've heard of the overlords' hats seems to match that description.

I have no idea what happened to her. I haven't seen her since the attack began.

One more thing. Four days is a long time to go without food. Yesterday the voice came into our heads again and said that if we needed food then we could go to the market district after sundown and we would be given food. Well, I snuck along and watched as the bugs began separating the civilians who arrived into two groups. Then they led them down into the tunnels.

That's when we all decided to run. Whatever they're taking them for, it can't be good.
