Missing in Modesto - One Shot story area

The letter seems handwritten but the script changes it seems possibly written by two people, the pages are yellow with age it seems though the page is warped in areas with water stains.

Our Children,
If you are reading this, we regret to inform you of our past and the curse on our family. You are likely missing a family member. A little about our background though, we came from small beginning as you know a little place in Italy but little more was told to you. Your family was something much more and much worse in the old country. We heard tales as young boys when our grandfather had too much to drink in quit whispers of how he had come to the Americas escaping from his old life with a young love and they seemed foolish. The only heir to a mafia family in Italy becoming a working stiff was laughable we thought but the look of regret and clarity in his eyes made us want to believe we descended from great men.
Our grandfather had found a plot of land and started making wine, that was his legacy that he passed on, he hoped the curse would never happen though to his offspring. We did some digging to find out the following, why is something we’ll get into later. When getting out of Italy he had made a deal with a Gypsie woman he knew by chance that needed to sneak out of the city for various reasons. Our grandfather and his lover begged her to let them join her begged for her help in escaping. She did on the condition they would help her if need be in the escape. At one point during the escape from the city while they were hiding he and his lover heard screams of someone being beaten, when they finally go to the place they found a body set afire. Mutters of finding a crazy witch were heard and his heart sank. He fled not bothering to check on the blackened body for fear of being discovered.
Coming to the Americas an immigrant and coming to California and doing hard work didn’t seem to phase our grandfather, that image though of a woman burned to death possibly did. He toiled and scrapped savings together and started a small winery not enough to make ends meet but in his downtime between harvests he too side jobs. Later we were filled with a similar purpose after an event when we were 6 and 7 years old. What happened was the abduction of our kid sister. Yes. We had a sister you had a Great Aunt to some extent. We were not fully aware at the time but when telling our parents we couldn’t find out sister our parents grew concerned stopping and closing the winery something that we found out when we older was a gamble financially. Our grandfather finding out went mad it seemed grabbing the both of us and yelling frantically for our parents to follow as he went, got his hunting rifle, and dragged the family into his truck before quickly speeding away. We watched in horror and surprised as a fire started in our house engulfing it rapidly. At a small cabin the family owned we collected ourselves our grandfather scaring not only us but our parents. They explained that they needed to look for their daughter and to watch us, he wouldn’t let them though. He kept muttering about smelling the smell of burnt hair and flesh and he knew she had come. He explained what had happened and how he had come to be in the Americas. With his love turned wife dead for over a decade, our parents thought he was senile. The following day he hung himself. Our parents more distraught now but able to flee called the police and explained the whole thing. Our sister was never found. We learned later the family had been investigating for starting the fire for insurance fraud from the business barely being afloat, our parents prided themselves on their honesty and work ethic, they may not have been the biggest success but their pride got the better of them when people looked at them afterwards differently. Amid the confusion they stayed trying to just work themselves raggedly until a package came. On our sister’s birthday ten years later we received a package of hair that had been burnt, from the color we knew who it belong to. Every ten years we received the same thing. It scared and made myself and my sibling sad with grief but it drove our parents insane. Our mother was committed eventually, overdoses on her medications somehow. Our father worked himself to death we found him in the winery one day collapsed over a barrel. His finger spelling out a letter. G. Our sister Gia, who hadn’t been talked about in over 20 years. That was his cross he bore that we picked up. This was our winery now. We learned about our business and our craft, in the downtime one of us would maintain the business and the other would learn and absorb knowledge like a madman possessed and come back and train the other. The packages still came until we both got married.
We never talked about it but when they stopped coming we wondered about it. Was she out of hair or had they finally killed her? We looked at the books and we had a lot of funding so we sunk 75% of our profits for several years into a project. We had found a few people who knew people from the old country from where our grandfather was from. We approached them slowly and bluntly gave them the story they filled in what had happened with our grandfather before the states. We put the blame on them and that we wanted it to never happen again and dropped out nest egg. They were a bit surprised but stated we definitely were his grandkids. They shook our hands and we left, we didn’t know what they’d do but we did feel better and didn’t ask questions. With having strung the business along for so long on a shoestring budget having actual money to reinvest helped a lot to expand the business.
To our offspring I, pray you never have to read this or come to turns with the worse case scenario. I hope the Foundation of G can help you find what you’ve lost. Be mindful of smelling burnt hair and flesh because there’s likely something dangerous following. To the members of the Foundation please help our offspring as best you can, they don’t want to wait ten years to find out the fate of their loved ones are sealed.
