Small question: Must we play in english?

Hello everyone,

I recently had an idea to get some of my real-life friends to start a game on here. We are, however, French-Canadians, and while we are all pretty much confortable with english, we'd probably prefer running our game in French (or in Québécois...). Would this cause any problems? Are we supposed to play in english on GP because it is an english forum?

Jut thought I'd ask before messing things up...

I know that the forums support some unicode characters, like you'd find in "façade" or "cumpleaños," but I don't know if it's an exhaustive list.

Personally, I don't see why you can't run a game in another language. Is there some unspoken agreement in place that we are forced to write in English?

As just a passerby, I don't really care what people do in their private games. But I could see why a public game that someone might enjoy reading (even though they're not a member) should probably be in the default language of the forum.

I've seen this question come up before and I believe that Keleth said he's okay with it.

I wonder if google translate would work for that.

I'm pretty sure I've seen both Spanish and French games pop up in 5e.

Google Translate's not terribly reliable, where it comes to being easy to understand. But I don't see any reason why a game couldn't be played in any language of choice. I recently tried a text-based adventure written in a nonsense language with a basic English-esque syntax. Made me think about ways to do a game without any kind of recognizable language.

If we are voting, I have no issue with games being run in other languages. In fact, if there was a policy saying English only, I'd likely object on moral grounds - I only speak English fwiw (as Linus so nimbly discovered).

FWIW, I took plenty of french and spanish as a young person, but none of it stuck, really. I do recommend Pimsleur method for learning languages, though, as opposed to Rosetta Stone.

Language policy is that games can be in any language, as long as it's clear it's not English. However, due to it being harder to monitor for rule violations, punishments for caught violations in any language I don't speak/read (or someone else who's an admin) will be harsher.

Got it.

I don't see why people can't game in a language other than English. I also speak French, and think its probably better for the site if there are more languages present on it. Frankly, I'd encourage it, even if keeping an eye on the forums is a little bit more of a challenge.
