IC: Fort Bones

The halfling nods and says in a low voice, "I can accept that." He holds Rocha's eye for just a moment more, then pulls on the reign. His mount turns with unexpected rapidity and speeds off in the direction of the Talenta Plains.

Vencerin steps forward, next to Rocha and breaths a sigh of relief. "That was close. I wonder what he was doing in Karrnath?" He stares after the halfling, rubbing his chin as he thinks.
Jun 27, 2018 7:07 am
"He might be a spy, or a bandit who lost his crew. Last I heard, the halflings of the Plains were friends with King Kaius, but every group has their outliers. We should let him go, but report him to any patrols we see. Just to be sure." Rocha watches as the halfling and his dino move away. "Shall we continue?"
Jun 29, 2018 1:29 am
Vencerin nods, scratching his head. "I thought they were going to respect our borders. We're definitely reporting this."

You continue your travels and nothing else of note happens until you arrive at Fort Bones.

The high walls are dirty white. At first sight, the walls appear to be topped with crenelations, but as one turns, you realize that they are animated skeletons on lookout.

The doors to the keep are open as the sun is going down. Few people move around inside, and one guard approaches and nods as Vencerin shows him his orders, directing him to a small office on the opposite side of the yard.

The office is dark as you enter, lit only by a small lantern sitting on the desk. A man sits at the desk, writing on a piece of paper. As he hears you enter, he looks up at you, his eyes bloodshot with lack of sleep and lines of worry cross his face.

"Yes? Who are you?" he asks. Vencerin steps forward and hands him his orders. The man takes them and looks them over then tosses them back at Vencerin with a laugh. Leaning back he says, "He's not here."
Jun 29, 2018 4:55 am
"And why is that, sir? We have orders to escort a prisoner to meet justice. How is it that this criminal is simply 'not here' a clear violation of your sworn duty?"
Jun 30, 2018 3:27 pm
"No, you misunderstand me," he says with a mirthless chuckle. "He's not here, in clear violation of his sworn duty. That man has been a problem ever since I got here." He smiles and licks his lips, then leans forward, folding his hands on the top of his desk.

"Several days ago, he was dispatched on a routine patrol along the border with the Talenta Plains. He returned early, recruited our wizard, and immediately left. I only found out about his return and departure hours after it had occurred." He spreads his hands out, palms up in a helpless expression. "He's been gone for three days past when he was due and I don't have the manpower to go looking for him. As it is, I can't continue to patrol the border without the soldiers he took with him the first time."
Jul 2, 2018 5:07 pm
Rocha stoically hides her frustration as she responds, "Then it will fall to us to find him. Thank you Commander. If you could provide the details we will head out immediately to find him I think. He's already got a head start, we shouldn't allow him the chance to get further afield."
OOC:
So...the fort didn't know he was being charged as a criminal? Or at least...he was out when the 'warrant' for his arrest came in and he was able to slip in and out before the commander could spread the word?
Jul 4, 2018 3:15 am
The officer sighs and nods. "I'm sorry this duty fell to you. ... Good luck." He turns back to what he was doing when you entered his office.
OOC:
You're the one's delivering the warrant, so no, they didn't know before your arrival. But, it seems that this guy is a problem for this commander.
Jul 4, 2018 7:01 am
OOC:
Ah...that makes sense then. I missed that point.
Rocha turns to Vincerin. "We should get moving as fast as we can. The longer we wait the farther he gets. Sorry for the long day, but it has to happen."
OOC:
So she is ready to go. What do you need next.
Jul 6, 2018 1:05 am
Vincerin sighs and nods, "Ok, let's get moving." He picks up his pack that he'd dropped at the door of the office upon arriving and tiredly slings it onto one shoulder. He folds the warrant and puts it back in his pocket, checking for it's presence again after adjusting the straps on his pack.

The officer points at the pair of you and says, "He was out patrolling the border and wasn't supposed to go more than a day's journey to either side of the fort. Being that he's overdue and out of communication, I don't know if he's within those bounds, but maybe that'll give you a place to start."

Vincerin nods again and leads the way out of the office, continuing out through the fort's gate.
OOC:
I don't want Vincerin to take lead here, because he's not the PC. How do you propose to find this guy? I'd like to roll with any of your ideas as long as they make sense in the fiction.

"We need to move fast." the necromancer leads the way down the road. "I'm not much in the way of tracking, but if he took the wizard, then magic must be involved. Maybe we head toward Cyre and see if there are any signs?"

Vincerin looks shocked at Rocha's suggestion. "Cyre?! The Mournland? I hope to the Host that he didn't go there. I've heard the stories..." he trails off with a shudder.

Rocha examines the ground. It's obvious that a lot of patrols come this way, so, perhaps it's a good way to go. You travel through grassy hills, following the trail to the border with the Telanta Plains where it turns to the West, toward Cyre.

When Vincerin realizes this, he groans, "Please tell me this isn't going where I think it is!"

Soon, just as the sun starts to dip down to the horizon, Rocha notices something a little off the trail he follows. It's the start of a new trail, one that has been used recently and very infrequently. It doesn't connect with the patrol trail you followed at all, and it appears to cross the border and enter the Talenta Plains.
Jul 12, 2018 6:32 am
"Maybe it isn't Cyre. Or at least, we are going to visit the halflings." Rocha says turning down the new path.

Perception - (1d20)

(2) = 2

You follow the path and it definitely leads into the Talenta Plains. It hasn't been used by very many people, but it's been used recently, within the past couple days. As the sun finally sets, Vincerin looks at the horizon. "Are we going to set up camp or push on through the night?" he asks.
Jul 13, 2018 6:57 pm
"He already has a day's lead on us. We should push through so that when he camps, we can catch up to him."
OOC:
I imagine this will require some Con checks or Survival or something. I think this course of action makes sense. I seem to recall a movie where this happened...but I can't think of what it was at the moment. Last western I saw was that AWFUL Adam Sandler Netflix thing. It might have been that.
Jul 14, 2018 4:15 pm
OOC:
Yeah, you've been traveling all day, fatigue might be setting in. I'll take a DC 10 Con check for the forced march.

I'll also take a Spot check as you travel.
Vincerin nods tiredly and pushes on into the tall grasses. A cold breeze picks up as the sun dips the last bit beneath the horizon.
OOC:
That Adam Sandler western thing was... odd. Very Adam Sandler and very not good.

OOC:
Forgot, wanted to make the CON roll for Vincerin, too...

Rolls

Vincerin CON DC 10 - (1d20+2)

(8) + 2 = 10

As the sun goes down Rocha has to fight to keep going, but the duty her king has put upon her keeps her bolstered.

Rolls

Con check - (1d20+1)

(8) + 1 = 9

Spot - (1d20+2)

(20) + 2 = 22

As you both continue following the trail, weary and focused on the journey, you realize that there are small figures hidden in the tall grass, watching you. You can't make them out individually, nor do you actually see a silhouette, but you spot a curve there, and joint there, a head sinking down there... all in silence.

What do you do?
Jul 17, 2018 6:14 am
"We are being watched. Halflings...I think. I hope. I'm going to call out to them, let them know we know. They might be with the one we saw earlier. I think if they were hostile, they would have attacked already, but be ready to defend yourself if I'm wrong." Rocha whispers to Vincerin.

Once her companion is ready, Rocha stops. Placing her hand on the hilt of her flail, but leaving it on her belt, she holds up her other hand. "Watchers in the night! We see you. Maybe not all of you, but some. I am Rocha Thul of the Karrathi armed forces. We come in seek of a man, a criminal, that needs to be brought to justice. He has with him a companion. They would be dressed in similar uniforms to our own. If you can aid me in finding him, it would be appreciated by the good people of Karrnath."
OOC:
Also...are we officially over the border into Talenta? Or can we tell one way or the other? I know this path goes there (and not into Cyre, thank goodness), but I am unclear on if we have actually entered yet.
Jul 18, 2018 3:00 am
OOC:
The border is not marked here, so you can't immediately tell. If you rolled a Knowledge (Geography) you'd be able to tell. DC 10.

Also, give me a Diplomacy roll to speak with them. DC 14.
