Chapter 1: The Mines of Trexel

Jun 6, 2018 3:37 pm
The ship drops from hyperspace deep in the Trelex system. Five small planets lazily orbit a tiny star: Trelex is one of the saddest systems you have ever seen, no wonder it was easily forgotten. The ship makes its way toward the second planet, also called Trelex, the only habitable planet in the system. Trelex is a barren orb of desert and rock with no visible source of water. As the ship approaches, you start to see evidence of civilization. The southern half of the planet is dominated by a massive mountain range with a large, sprawling "city" spread along the northern edge. It was called the New City and it has been abandoned for almost a hundred years. To the north is a second, smaller range, with a matching city, called, unsurprisingly, the Old City. It was here that settlers first occupied Trelex and it is here that the few inhabitants remain. The Old City sits on the eastern edge of the mountain range. You can see mining complexes dotting the edge of the mountains, west of city. As you get closer, you see that only one of these mines seems active. Scatter around the city are massive domes, deep water mines to keep the citizens alive.

Prime swings the ship closer to the planet, bringing the Imperial presence into view. An Arquitens-class light cruiser sits in orbit, flanked by a pair of Gozanti-class assault carriers. The Gozanti's drop half a dozen TIE fighters which form up around a VT-49 Decimator, on an intercept pattern. The last two TIEs swing around behind your Questor. The fleet was meager by Imperial standards, but it had more than enough firepower to obliterate anything short of a capital ship. Prime submits the clearance codes provided by Kappa and the TIEs break off, allowing you to enter orbit.

Prime speaks up, "The Imperials have occupied the western quarter of the city and have built a new spaceport in their wonderfully efficient hab-block style. Kappa did not think landing right in the beehive of the Empire was wise, so I have secured docking at a lesser use civilian facility to the north. We received a coded message from Lt. Bern, our target while we were in transit. He states that today is his best chance to slip away. He provided coordinates, which I have uploaded to your datapads. The point is about 3 kilometers from our landing site, but I do not have up to date maps to tell you exactly what it is. He requests extraction just after dusk, local time, approximately 6 standard hours from now."

Prime lands the ship in a run-down looking facility on the northern edge of the city. No one comes to greet the ship, and frankly, the port seems empty. The droid stands and tilts his head quizzically, "Do you require further assistance, or shall I stay here and keep the engines running, so the speak?"
Jun 6, 2018 7:56 pm
Sugo's voice reverberates through his anti-ox, "So much for sussing out the situation...", And so much for the Rebels having their stuff together., he muses to himself. "I suppose out-of-date maps might be better than nothing, do you have that, Prime?"
Jun 6, 2018 8:46 pm
Prime pauses for a moment. "The last time this planet was surveyed was 106 years ago. At that time, the area in question contained 4 active refineries and a variety of social establishments, ostensibly to cater to the laborers."
Jun 6, 2018 10:13 pm
"Surveying the scene will be important. We have plenty of time to use." Looking up slightly under her dark brown hood, the woman still kept most of her face in shadow. Ancient maps... potentially still useful. She contemplated asking for them anyway, but realized that without a datapad of her own, they wouldn't do her much good either way. She'd leave the duty of carrying those with them to someone else, if any of them actually felt they could be useful.

"Let us not... attract unwanted attention until necessary. We cannot hope to fight our way past the blockade." They had all seen the fleet in orbit - even without massive star destroyers, a small ship like theirs would be scrap metal before they left the atmosphere if they screwed this up.

"Three kilometers to the extraction point... We may need a speeder if we're to scout out the location and retrieve Lt. Bern in time." Kel looks out the viewport, scanning the area for potential speeder rentals or something he could "acquire" if needed.

"106 years ago, Prime? It has been a while. We'll do what we can with them." Lotus begins to grab his belongings, making an extra thorough check of his rifle and medical supplies. He looks out a viewport to the dry landscape, and for a brief moment he misses his humid swamps back home.

"We have 6 hours to move, get the intel from Bern, and determine if he can be extracted safely." He looks at Hira and nods in agreement. "With such a small team, the less the imperials know we're here, the better."

"Kel, if you can find something that won't attract attention, a speeder might be helpful. Although from the looks of this place, finding a function speeder is as likely as finding a nuna chorus line."

He shifts his belongs to his back, moves over to the exit ramp, and begins humming a popular chorus line song that just came into his head.

"Looks like slim pickings out here. I'll keep an eye out but we may as well get moving. It's not that long of a trek." Kel goes over his gear, checks the power packs on his pistols and slings his pack. Once sorted, he pulls out an expensive looking commlink and plugs it into the ship comm. "Prime, here's my encryption code in case we need to get in touch while we're out there."
OOC:
I totally mind blanked on the kilometers and was thinking it was a long distance instead of less than two miles.

I'd like to use my 3-MAL secure commlink to sync up with the ship comm in case we need to send an encrypted transmission.
Jun 7, 2018 1:26 am
OOC:
Commlinks! Drat. I think I totally forgot to get one during equipment purchasing.
Lotus watches Kel sync his comms. "We should all connect with each other too. Prime, any extra commlinks on the ship for those that need one?"
Jun 7, 2018 2:58 am
Off to the side, Zusom watched the rest of the team with a blank face and a calculating gleam as he slid round after round into ammo clips. On top of the intimidation factor that the steady *CLICK* had on informants, it also served as a meditative exercise for him, helping clear his mind before setting out on a hunt. Three clicks was a relatively short hike, though even short hikes felt immeasurable under fire.

Briefly, the screams and roars of artillery fire echoed through Zusom's mind, the phantom smell of blood, viscera, piss and worse wafting in his nose. With a scowl, he forced those memories away, returning to the present. Shoving the loaded clips into his armor a little rougher than necessary, the hunter made his way to the rest of the group.

"We should move out soon, regardless of the honesty of the mark it would be foolish not to inspect the coordinates for a possible trap or ambush points along the way."

OOC:
I’m not a real stickler about equipment and credits. Feel free to add minor pieces of equipment during any downtime scenes and I’m a huge fan of Vigilance checks for equipment purposes. Credits, IMO, are really a balance check to make sure your weapons and armor are at the appropriate level.

Unless anyone has any great objection, someone should make a "heading out" post to describe the party’s general plan for travel
Jun 7, 2018 4:29 pm
OOC:
Joress, you could flip a Destiny to "remember" you did infact bring your com...?

EDIT: Whoop! GM ninja'ed me.
Sugo provides his com frequency to the others, "Ground transport would be good... maybe we split up? One team works on that, the other proceeds directly to the rendezvous coordinates in foot. Get as close as they can, do what recon they can, and coordinate our actions from there?"

OOC:
Very true! I should have thought of that myself! ;P With Bardo's comments, and to stay with the mechanics of the system, I'll flip a destiny point to say there were some basic commlinks in the ship for teams such as ours as they embark on their mission, if that is ok.
Lotus agrees with Sugo, and suggests he and Kel look for a transport, while the rest start making their way to the location. With any luck, they'll catch up with a speeder before they all get to the designated location. Otherwise, the walking team can set up some recon for the area, and wait for the others to arrive.

"Let's get started then," Kel says to everyone as he motions to Lotus in an 'After You' motion. "Let's sync up our comms and I can give you all my encryption codes." After syncing up with whoever wants his codes, Kel departs with Lotus in search of a speeder to procure.
Jun 7, 2018 7:46 pm
"I think I could be of great help in securing ground transport... I can be quite ... persuasive."
Jun 7, 2018 10:17 pm
"You head off with Kel then, Sugo. I'll head out on foot with the others. We'll meet you both at the designated location. May the Force be with you."

"I will go to the pick up point, see what the environment is like."
Jun 7, 2018 10:32 pm
"Alright, here's my codes." sharing the frequency of her own Comlink, Hira gives the two setting out to get them transportation a quiet nod, Hira readied herself to set out with Lotus and the others to scout out their target location. While she wouldn't be too much use at the actual scouting, she'd at least keep them out of danger, hopefully.

Stepping down from the ship's ramp, the Echani breathed in the dry air of the planet. Once, so many had lived here... Two entire cities, left to decay and slow rust. She couldn't help but wonder, how many secrets would remain hidden forever in these steel catacombs? And just how many more were hidden on the south side of the planet, in the city spanning so much of the mountain range there?

Turning to the others, Hira spoke again.

"I'll bring up the rear."

The group makes its way west towards the rendezvous. You see very few residents, and the ones that you do see pay you little mind. You take a slower pace than you could, to avoid attention, but still cover the distance in good time. You emerge on an intersection just south of the coordinates and it's a flurry of activity, compared to the rest of the city. The coordinates point to a garage attached to a larger industrial building. Outside the building, you see a pair of Imperial Officers directing workers as they load equipment onto a pair of grav-haulers. A squad of Stormtroopers maintains a loose perimeter around the Empire activity. Along the block, between you and the Officers, many of the buildings appear occupied, which is a big change from what you observed on your trek. A group of men sit outside a cantina, observing the workers. A grocer sits across from the cantina, with a steady flow of customers. Closer to you, a group stands outside a transportation depot. No one seems to notice, or care, about your arrival.
OOC:
It's time for my custom passive check time. Basically this is a way for you to use "signature" skills to establish how your character approaches a new situation and help me to guide you to the deeper layers of a scene. As you narrate your entrance into the encounter, make mention of a particular detail your character pays some extra attention to. Pretty much any skill can be used. Just to help you understand what I'm trying for, I'll give you some examples that would work for this particular setup

Deception or Stealth to eavesdrop on one of the groups
Mechanics to get details on the equipment being loaded
Negotiation to get a feel for the grocer
Outer Rim to get a feel for the locals
Perception or Vigilance to look for hidden threats
Piloting (Planetary) to examine the haulers
Streetwise or Underworld to see if anything is going on "behind the scenes"
Warfare to get a better read on the Stormtroopers
Jun 8, 2018 5:13 pm
OOC:
Yeah, I like the idea of the Knowledge Warfare check. Difficulty?
Lotus knows the importance of a strong military presence in decisive situations, but uncovering your enemy's tactics can be the one deciding factor that helps a soldier overcome great odds.

He observes the block of activity, keeping his distance for the time being as he assesses the military layout. He watches the stormtroopers, their formation, tracks their movement, and tries to determine their orders. He also scans the rest of the area, looking for other possible troop post locations in other nearby buildings or rooftops.

OOC:
Unless stated otherwise assume all are normal, usually with a setback die. In this situation the setback is because you’re trying to stay inconspicuous. Also, in general, I’d rather you assume the difficulty and roll and I can edit later.
Jun 8, 2018 8:32 pm
OOC:
oh, that’s right. My bad!
Lotus analyzes the situation...

Urban environment, large number of bystanders, busy location, Zusom noted as he looked around the intersection.

His gaze primarily focused on rooftops, calculating the angles and ideal sniper nests. Thinking where he would set up if he were making an ambush.

As they reach the intersection without incident, Hira can't help but feel uneasy with the sudden increase in activity around them. Nothing dangerous at first glance, of course, but she never did like crowds... Even if this crowd was positively tiny compared to what you dealt with on real urban worlds.

Glancing at the technology being loaded without being obvious, the former Imperial tries to learn just what the Empire was up to at this place...
OOC:
I like the idea of using mechanics to figure out the Empire's actions here a bit, or if that isn't feasible, get a read on the state of their equipment and potential surveillance. Due to Gearhead, I remove the Setback added to the check.

The intersection appears to be a completely ordinary urban layout. Like any urban environment, firing positions and ambush opportunities abound, but there doesn't seem to be any troops in the area, other than the clearly visible squad. As for the squad, they're either green, or bored, or both, because their formation is fairly sloppy and they don't seem to really be paying attention. The workers however, seem nervous. As one glances about, he locks eyes with Hira, catching her observing him. He motions to grab the attention of the Stormtroopers, but before they can react, one the Officers steps forward. He points toward a woman who is standing closest to the operation and the Stormtroopers respond to move her farther away from the operation. The Stormtroopers return to position as the last of the boxes is loaded. The Officers and Stormtroopers load into one of the haulers and roll off.
Jun 12, 2018 11:59 pm
OOC:
Couple questions... Am I understanding that the imperial presence has now left the area? And would you like us to go ahead and spend any additional positive (or negative) results from the previous roll?
Jun 13, 2018 9:26 pm
OOC:
As far as you can tell, they're all gone. As to effects from the passive rolls, I've decided that I will incorporate those into my narration. In this instance the Threat caused the worker to take notice, but the Triumph caused the Officer to intervene.
Jun 13, 2018 10:50 pm
Quickly pulling her hood back over her silver eyes as they make contact with those of a worker, Hira is relieved to notice the officer intervene. That could've ended badly - they were apparently at least somewhat jumpy or concerned about 'locals'. At least nobody is getting shot yet - Hira probably couldn't just stand by if that happened. For now, she leans over towards Zusom and Lotus.

"Didn't manage to spot their cargo in detail. See any place to lay low till the appointed time to keep watch?" Keeping her voice down, Hira's hidden eyes scan the darker corners of the street, trying to make sure nobody is watching the rebels hidden in plain sight.
Jun 14, 2018 5:19 am
Lotus looks impatiently down the street, hoping to see the other teammates coming in a speeder. "I didn’t get a good look either. Do you think we could risk getting a little closer and seeing what’s inside the warehouse?"
Jun 15, 2018 9:36 pm
OOC:
The ball is in your court (for now), let me know what your next step is :)
Jun 15, 2018 10:13 pm
OOC:
Lotus is still focused on finding this contact, but that cargo has definitely caught his attention.

I guess we need to locate this Lt. Bern somehow. With no visible troops outside the warehouse, I say we make our way to the building and try to get in.
Lotus makes sure there aren't any more imperial troopers nearby, and waves the others to follow him to an entrance into the building.
Jun 18, 2018 3:54 pm
OOC:
Anything stopping us from moving up to the warehouse to take a peak inside? Otherwise, Lotus will be looking for their defector.

As the party moves up towards the warehouse, one of the men sitting outside the Cantina shouts, his words slightly slurred from the drink in front of him, "Hey! What do you lot think you're doing? Despite what the Empire," and he spits as he says that word, "may say, that's still my refinery. I may not be able to keep them out, but I sure as heck can keep a bunch of wanna-be thugs out."
OOC:
Just FYI, it's still broad daylight and hours before you're supposed to meet the defector. If you guys don't want to do anything else, you can just lay low until the appointed time.
Jun 19, 2018 9:00 pm
"Refinery?" Lotus looks at Zusom and Hira. "Oh, your refinery. Of course it is, sir! We are not here to interfere with your business, and our apologies for assuming it was open to the public."

Lotus moves closer to the man, and talks in a lower tone. "We do share, however, the similar disdain for the imperials here, especially interfering with legitimate dealings. We would all be better off if they weren't here, interfering with your...what is it you are refining?"
OOC:
I'm going to try a Charm check to see if we can get some more info from this guys. I'll add a setback, since we probably were too forward trying to walk into his warehouse, but I'll also add a boost since he seems a little drunk, and trying to show our similar hatred towards the empire.

The man's surly demeanor softens as Lotus mentions his dislike for the Empire. "Maybe I was a little hasty. Sit down, sit down. Let me buy you fine lads a drink." He motions to the waitress who brings another bottle and three glasses. "What am I refining you ask? Nothing, that's what I'm refining. Most of the refineries shut down when my grandfather was a boy, back when the mines went dry. But you gotta remember, dry is a relative term. Sure, there's not enough carvanium left here for the big boys like Vulca or Turlin to run a large scale operation, but there's plenty to keep the locals fed and happy. That's what I had been doing, before those Imperials showed up. They come, outta nowhere, and just open up all the old mines. At first we thought it was a blessing, a lot of good men went back to work. But, if they're trying to farm durasteel, they're doing it all wrong, because they haven't brought a single truck of ore back to the city since they got here. And I would know, since my refinery is really the only one left that can handle raw carvanium in any quantity. So I had to shut down. Then last week they swoop in and start scavenging parts from my machines without a word as to why. Some officer told me they're done with my stuff after today, but I'm too depressed to go in and see what they even left me."
Jun 22, 2018 10:57 pm
Lotus graciously takes one of the drinks the man offers, takes a seat, and listens to his tale.

He glances at his comrades, and back to the man. "So, the imperials are mining the carvanium, but they aren't refining it into the durasteel? Plus, they are scavenging your refinery? Wow. That is quite the story, boss. Do you think they are taking the carvanium or your parts off planet?"

"By the way, what's your name, boss? You can call me 'Tenac.'"
Jun 25, 2018 3:38 pm
"Burns is what everyone calls me. They're mining something, that's for damn sure. This planet has been occupied for thousands of years, and the only thing anyone ever found of value was the carvanium. So that's what I assume they're mining. But it's been months since anyone not in a white helmet has come back to town. The ships come and go, so they have plenty of opportunity to take stuff off, but it doesn't make sense. Raw ore is heavier and less valuable than refined ore, and my equipment isn't anything the Empire couldn't make in a day on a hundred worlds. If anyone knows what's going on out in the mines, they ain't told me."
Jun 26, 2018 8:39 pm
OOC:
I'm I the only one here now? :( I hate to be the only one making the decisions...
Jun 27, 2018 2:27 am
OOC:
I've been following along, but haven't said anything because it would basically be "Zusom stands there looking intimidating." I have no problems with Zusom basically being there to fix the party's gear and either scare or shoot people.
Jun 27, 2018 10:34 pm
"It doesn't make much sense, Burns. And it definitely has a 'bad smell' to it. Do you know were the mines are that the imperials seem to be exploiting?"
Jul 5, 2018 8:59 pm
Hira leans back on her chair, though the little sips she takes from the offered drink barely register at all. The Empire mining something down below, yet it wasn't carvanium... or at least, most likely wasn't. This poor sod would probably not get paid anything for the parts the Empire had stolen from him either.

Still, for now she remained quiet, not wanting to potentially upset their talkative friend with her imperial-like accent. Her silver eyes glance over towards Lotus, who is keeping the conversation going perfectly, and gives him and Burns a nod, agreeing with the statement of this having a very 'bad smell' to it.
Jul 9, 2018 11:29 pm
Lotus takes the visual cues from Hira, and then glances down the street, looking for the others in their speeder.

"Burns, we have some other associates arriving soon. Anything we can do to help you out?"
Jul 18, 2018 4:34 am
Lotus keeps an eye out for the rest of the team, as well as staying aleart watching for the imperial contact they were sent here to get intel from.
