Episode 2: The Bronze Age

Jun 20, 2018 11:16 pm
You have spent a month in the desert helping the goblins manage their camp. In that time, you've become quite fluent in the Goblin language, which only strengthens your relationships with the small creatures. The boisterous halfling and his companions move on less than a week after your arrival, and later a different group of adventurers arrive with orders to take the lone half-elf with them. Thereafter, you are the only non-goblins in this camp.

Communication between yourselves and Rhiann Vequaniel is sparse, and the few times she does contact one of you directly via Sending is to congratulate you on the successful job, make yourselves useful to Caraw-Chuwk, and to be ready for the next assignment whenever it comes. However, evidently she seems to communicate with Caraw-Chuwk more frequently, and he passes along her words whenever they apply to you: keep up the good work, make yourselves useful, be ready.

During a mid-morning cleaning session, Caraw-Chuwk interrupts. "My friends, Rhiann has informed me that something in the distant town of Barad Sari has occurred, and your talents might prove worthwhile in resolving the situation.

"Rumors have come to our attention that a metallic dragonborn has been sighted in the vicinity. We don't have much else to go on, but we think the promise of the existence of such a rare individual warrants investigation. Rhiann would like you to travel to Barad Sari and determine whether or not the rumors are true, and if they are, to find the dragonborn and secure their safety before Caer Tan does.

"Will you undertake this task?"

Maenor's eyes light with excitement as he looks at his comrades. "I am most certainly interested," he says to them.
Jun 21, 2018 8:27 pm
"A real live metallic dragonborn?" Kalis asks, eyes wide, "Such a rare thing in these times. I think it would be wise to head there as quickly as possible and find out what we can do to make contact."
Jun 23, 2018 1:45 am
Eager to prove himself to his new colleagues Gyges steps up and agrees to the task saying, "I'd be very interested in this journey. A dragonborn...amazing. I've never met one before."
Jun 23, 2018 7:18 am
"I don't think anyone has, not for a very long time," says Caraw-Chuwk. "The metallic dragons and their kin are practically myth and legend for most people.

"Do you have any questions? Is there anything you might need from us before you leave?"
Jun 23, 2018 9:16 am
"Assuming we are able to find the dragonborn, what next? Where should we go for safe haven?"
Jun 23, 2018 6:54 pm
Caraw-Chuwk nods. "You may return here, or travel to Eglar and see Rhiann. I do not know if there is a safehouse in or near Barad Sari, but we will find out all that we can and contact you if we receive any news."
Jun 24, 2018 1:52 am
"Besides the dragonborn, is there anything else we should prepare ourselves for? This is all quite new to me, and I'm not sure what to expect," Gyges says.
Jun 24, 2018 3:57 am
Caraw-Chuwk considers the question. He answers with gravitas, "Rumors are like the wind; they span far and wide, and ours are not the only faces to feel them. If the Pale has heard about the possibility of a dragonborn, I would reason that Caer Tan has, too."
Jun 26, 2018 4:18 am
"Understood," says Gyges nodding his head. "I suppose we should be prepared for the worst."
Jun 28, 2018 8:56 am
"Agreed," Maenor says, "That is always wise."

He turns to Caraw-Chuwk and asks, "May we have the use of a beast of burden or some horses? I know you may not have many to spare, but we have much to carry and it would help us make better speed to this town."
Jun 28, 2018 4:41 pm
Caraw-Chuwk nods. "The two horses you recovered from the dog-men's lair are yours to take. If you wish to take the wagon, you may. I believe your mule is also ready to go."
Jun 28, 2018 8:35 pm
"That should be more than sufficient, thank you," Kalis says to Caraw-Chuwk with a bow, "It's not enough, but I feel that I must thank you and yours for your incredible hospitality while we stayed here."
Jun 29, 2018 3:49 am
Gyges nods his assent, but is eager to be on his way. The prospect of so much adventure is almost too much for him to take.
Jul 7, 2018 12:21 am
You ready for departure, and most of the goblins gather to see you off. When the previous visitors left, it was with little fanfare, but it seems you have made quite an impression on the village. You are given many provisions to last you the journey, and tiny gifts are pressed into your hands or stuffed into your packs.

Setting off into the desert, you plot your journey to the distant town of Barad Sari.
OOC:
Two things to start this trek:

1) Everyone may roll 2d2 times on the Trinket table for the random assortment of presents you receive from the goblins. If you insist on refusing, you don't have to roll.

2) Let's have some skill challenges. Choose one of your skills (doesn't have to be one that's proficient) and RP the justification for it. For example, you can do a Nature check to identify plants to eat, Animal Handling to catch a snake, or Acrobatics to hop up onto a boulder. I will determine whether or not your checks succeed after you post. Use your imagination and creativity!

Each of you can make two skill challenges, but unless everybody else has already gone, you can't roll two times in a row; you have to wait for somebody else to make a check before you can go again. I will determine the winner at my discretion, but succeeding on your skill check will play a major factor.
Jul 7, 2018 2:14 am
Gyges awkwardly thanks his hosts for their generosity despite not really knowing what they're offering him. "Its much appreciated, and I hope I can repay your kindness," he says doing his best to be diplomatic and polite. As the group preps itself to leave, Gyges can't help but be intrigued by symbols quickly scratched into the dirt by some goblin sages. They appear to be hotly debating, but Gyges, in fear of stepping into something that is not his place, Gyges feels a strong compulsion to understand the discussion. "Its like the Rare Books at the library, but far more ephemeral," he thinks to himself as creeps closer. "Even if its nothing, how they understand this could mean so much for understanding everything about his settlement." He looks over their shoulders to get a better look at the sigils inspiring the discussion...

At night, while the others are sleeping, Maenor watches the stars. He has read theories about them, but no-one knows for sure what they are. He amuses himself by imagining shapes formed by the distant points, and notices that while most of them drift slowly across the night sky, there is one that stays fixed near the northern horizon. He begins to try and use this knowledge to guide their path.

Maenor, it was 2d2, for a range of 2 to 4 trinkets. Since everyone's getting approximately the same amount anyway, why don't we just say you got 4 trinkets and move the additional results to Gyges and Kalis, so everybody has 4.

Gyges currently has:
* A scrap of cloth from an old banner
* A glass orb filled with water, in which swims a clockwork goldfish
* An old chess piece made of glass
* (Roll 1d100 for a fourth trinket).

Maenor currently has:
* A bright green feather
* A glass orb filled with smoke
* A nightcap that, when worn, gives you pleasant dreams
* An old chess piece made of glass

Kalis currently has:
* A dead sprite inside a clear glass bottle
* A glass eye
* An empty wine bottle bearing a pretty label that says, "The Wizard of Wines Winery, Red Dragon Crush, 331422-W"
* A 1-pound egg with a bright red shell

DM Note: I really like the result that the nightcap was given to a person that doesn't really sleep.
Jul 11, 2018 7:22 pm
At first, Gyges can make no sense of the symbols. However, listening to the goblins talk, he begins to understand that what he sees is not magical in nature, but philosophical. It seems that a few of the elder goblins are transcribing thoughts and observations into symbols with the intent to share with the younger and reinforce the teachings of Caraw-Chuwk. Much of the argument seems to center around a conflict between documenting the teachings for posterity, and the flexibility of transitive thought and adaptation. One side posits that Caraw-Chuwk would stress the need for oral teachings adapted to the contexts the goblins find themselves in, while the other reasons that goblins tend to be visual creatures and the symbols would help solidify the ideas in their minds for their own guidance.

Neither side is gaining ground, so Gyges focuses on the symbols themselves and the snippets from the sages' words. He gathers that Caraw-Chuwk spreads a strange philosophy of personal insight and the blending of the subjective with the objective. There is the recognition of differences and independence, yet an acknowledgement of a universal commonality that intimates a merging of everything into one. It is as if each thing has its own intrinsic value, yet in relation to everything else they must return to a sameness.

As complicated as it sounds, it seems to result in a goblin commune dedicated to peaceful co-existence with the world.
Jul 11, 2018 7:23 pm
Maenor documents his study of the stars. The desert sky at night is clear and peaceful, and to a near-immortal being like the elf, it nearly frightens Maenor with how infinite the stars seem to be in number. He latches onto the constant and anchors himself in the steady orientation of certain lights, and gleans an understanding of the universe's order within chaos. Using those fixed origins, Maenor develops his own patterns in the night sky and documents the memory, creating a positional guide that he is able to transpose onto any map or physical space.

Kalis spends a lot of time trying to learn more skills that will be useful for the road and he seems to be less useless than he was before. During downtime, he spends his time reciting tales that he's read to his companions, trying to keep morale up and stave off the boredom of a long journey. He seems to get really into the telling, using many different voices and happily giving any background information to his companions that they ask for. It seems that he truly has passion for the tales he tells, but whether he's actually good at it...

Jul 18, 2018 7:07 pm
In the beginning, the talent was without form, and void. Darkness masked each character, until the creator birthed new light into their personalities. Voices gave shape and exaggeration gave distinction. The generic moulds created by authors of the past were shattered by the whims of the storyteller, and things that were not became thus.

Coda appreciates the drive behind Kalis' tales, and secretively gives a few pointers to help the man hone his skill.

Kalis initially starts with the tried-and-true stories, reciting them verbatim as best he can. He starts to work on his improvisational skills in order to keep the story flowing, which lends a vibrancy to the words and paints a fluid portrait of all characters. The tales gradually take on new life with new excitement.
OOC:
Congratulations to everyone on roleplaying this skill challenge. I was quite happy to read and react to your setups, and got very excited in writing up the results.

Follow-up question: what's the plan for traveling to Barad-Sari? Do you intend to stick to the wilds, or make a stop at Frysor Stronghold?

You do have enough supplies provided by the goblins to last you the journey, presuming that you are able to forage for supplemental things along the way.

OOC:
Awesome, thanks! It was a fun challenge.

Is the Stronghold what it sounds like, a major military base?
Jul 19, 2018 12:15 am
OOC:
Frysor Stronghold is indeed a major military base. It is situated next to a large freshwater lake that serves as an oasis in the middle of a desolate wasteland, and also serves to secure the northern border of the ancient white dragon Sumadea's "domain."

There is a sister city of sorts with Lepool Stronghold, eight days of travel away, that serves the same purpose for the ancient green dragon Alikil, and there is a bit of a rivalry between the two governing bodies. While there hasn't been any open conflict between the "Bane of the North" and "Rime of the South," it's no secret that political play and one-upmanship happens often.

Despite whatever perceived tensions there may be, Frysor Stronghold is still a city. There are traders and caravans that travel from Frysor Stronghold to other places (the caravan you were sent to rendezvous with originated from Frysor), but it's not a major trading hub. With few Caer Tan cities in the desolate wastelands, security is a primary concern and a significant military presence is obvious.

That's not to say that visitors aren't welcome. Citizens of Caer Tan enjoy a freedom to travel to many places and Frysor is no exception. Unfortunately, there isn't much for a tourist to do save for a fishing cruise upon the lake, and the journey through the deserts to get to Frysor is not something of a priority for your average vacationer.

Assuming the group is together at the moment...
"So! We're off soon," says Gyges a little excitedly. "Do we have horses, or a cart? How are we going to get to this place? I'm all for walking, but I feel like it might be kind of far. What do you think woud be best?"
Jul 19, 2018 3:48 pm

Studying their route, Kalis points out the stronghold in their path, "If we take the road, we'll be passing through Frysor Stronghold," he says, and then looks to his supply list, "I think we should have enough supplies for the whole journey. Perhaps it would be best to skip past it. No reason to risk getting caught."
Jul 20, 2018 2:54 am
"I agree," says Gyges wholeheartedly. "We'd probably need to be on the lookout for patrols as well. Are we going to look suspicious on the road? I mean, how much traffic is there next to a military installation?"
Jul 20, 2018 8:47 am
"We could go overland instead," suggests Maenor.

Buoyed by his knowledge of the stars and relying on the advice gleaned from goblin scouts, Maenor has no difficulty in navigating an efficient path across the desert. To others, it might seem as though the mesa that jut from the parched earth look no different than the hundreds of others they had passed the day before, but the cleric is confident in both direction and distance.

Near the end of the day's travel, just as you mull the thought of breaking for camp, both Kalis and Maenor spot something on the northern horizon. You have seen many things in this desert, but this bears a bit of interest. For the briefest of seconds, you catch a glimpse of reflective light, as though the setting sun glints off of something metallic.

Kalis is unable to tell how far off that near-instantaneous flash of light is, but Maenor assesses that it will take a few hours' worth of travel away from their current direction.
Jul 31, 2018 3:56 pm
"Should we press forward to see what that flash was, or should we go look in the morning?" Kalis asks of his companions

OOC:
How long have we actually been traveling for?
"That's a good question Kalis. After just being on the trip all day, I'm both a little tired, but also very intersted in doing something beyond just riding along. I might be up for going to check it out if it won't stress our transportation too much. Academic curiosity, you know?" Gyges says to Kalis.

You are on the second day of travel.
Aug 1, 2018 11:31 am
"I confess I am curious, but suggest that we proceed cautiously."
Aug 1, 2018 1:18 pm
"Let us go check it out, then," Kalis says, "Let's be cautious, though."
Aug 4, 2018 2:36 am
You deviate from your path and make your way in the direction of that glimpsed light. As you travel, you can tell that whatever it is remains stationary, and the constant glint practically serves as a beacon amidst the desert. In time, you notice more glimmers of light and deduce that you a scattered array of metal objects lie on the ground.

The sun begins to set, losing much of its light and threatening to mask the location you seek. You have progressed far enough, however, to tell that what lies ahead is the aftermath of a great battle. A number of bodies lie on the desert floor, and the dying reflections of light come from the weapons and armor of the fallen.

You see carrion birds picking away at every slain person, except for one. This lone individual is oddly left unbothered by the scavengers of the desert.
Aug 4, 2018 2:43 am
He knows it's not the journey, but Gyges feels his stomach lurch a bit at the sight. "Is this a common scene? I know I'm new to this, but I should probably try and get used to all this gore, shouldn't I?" Gyges asks the rest of the party. He seems a bit unsure of what to do next. "I feel like we should investigate, but its getting late now, and I'm not sure staying here is the best idea. What do you all think?"
Aug 4, 2018 3:48 pm
"Please, wait here...I wonder if there is perhaps a survivor," Maenor requests as he alights from the wagon and heads to the one figure unmolested by the birds.

From where he stands, Kalis can tell there was a great battle here. The bodies are scattered about, and he sees the fletching of arrows dot the brush here and there like singular feathered flowers. Not much can be gleaned beyond that, as any other clues would warrant closer investigation.

Maenor approaches the body and sees...
OOC:
Welcome Tsavo! Describe your character's appearance as you lie on the desert floor. You are stable at 0 hit points.
Aug 5, 2018 1:23 am
...the battered and bloody form of a warrior on his back.

If the shaft of the broken arrow in his shoulder had retained its fletching, it would have no doubt matched those buried in the shield still clutched across his unconscious form. The maritime themed engravings adorning his scarred breastplate signaled to even the most casual observer that he was not from this part of the world, and the bubbles forming and pulsing at the corners of his lips told of his unwillingness to end his travels in the sand that soaked up his life's fluids.

His pointed ears, white hair, the styling of his facial tattoo made clear his eleven ancestry. His armour, clothes, and shield were those of an adventurer; clearly well used but just as well loved and maintained.
Aug 5, 2018 5:10 pm
Maenor speaks softly, "Rest easy, brother. I am going to ask the Goddess to mend your wounds." He tentatively places a hand on the man's shoulder near the broken arrow and sends green energy flowing gently into the wound. As he does, he slowly pulls out the arrow.

The divine energy sends waves of warmth through Reizei's body, closing the most serious wounds and rousing the half-elf to consciousness.
Aug 5, 2018 6:48 pm
Reizei's eyes flutter open and dilate, adjusting to the light levels of the early evening sky. It doesn't take long for his head to clear and his wits quickly return to him. His hand subconsciously drifts to where the arrow should be protruding from his shoulder as he scans the situation.

He takes in the carnage in an instant and begins putting the pieces together. His eyes then come to rest on Elven Cleric kneeling over him. A smile finds its way to his face. I owe you a great debt Master Healer. His attention flits past Maenor's shoulder to the only other living beings in the immediate area.

Reizei sits up, winces, and slides his hand from his shoulder to his temple. He takes in a deep breath then lets it out slowly, scrunching his nose slightly at the smell of death all around him. Facing Maenor in a slightly less vulnerable position and with a semblence of his senses about him he asks, "Forgive me if this comes across as too forward in the light of your kindness to me, but who are you and how is it you've come to be here?"
OOC:
Reizei tries to put together what he can about the battle he was in based on the number and types of bodies about him and the general lay of the field. Was he on the winning side? Was there a retreat/routing?

Reizei senses that Maenor is sincere in his statements, as far as not finding any plausible sign of falsehood or other deceit.

The mere mention of a god other than Nergirsu, the Avatar of Tiamat, is enough to trigger an inclination that the elf is probably not directly affiliated with Caer Tan.
OOC:
I will let Maenor describe the tenets of Angharradh, at least as much as a Religion roll of 17 would glean.
Aug 8, 2018 5:40 pm
After a brief pause, during which Reizei casts an appraising eye over both the elf in front of him as well as his compatriots lurking in the background, he lets his shoulders drop a bit and sighs.

"I'll tell you what I can remember. I'd be dead without your assistance, so I owe you at least the truth." He glances around again at the field, remembering the explosions - the glaring light and the eruption of violence. "We had received word of a Caer Tan convoy due to come through this way. We lay in wait and when the timing was right, we sprung our trap. However, as it turns out, we were not the only ones preparing a surprise. As soon as we attacked, there were flashes of light and explosions all around. Seemingly from nowhere, a large contingent of dragonborn troops were upon us. Then it was chaos."

Reizei paused again, taking a breath and seemingly reliving a moment. Then he continued, "We were out of our league. It was all over before it truly got going. A large explosions went off near me...or maybe I was hit...it's all a blur. Regardless, I blacked out. When I came to, the Shattered Souls were checking the dead and rounding up survivors. I think they took around seven of my party with them in total including our team leader. I heard him as they dragged him off."

After a moment of staring at his own boots, his eyes shot up to lock with those of Maenor, "If I had been in any condition to do anything at all, even if it meant my life, ...." he trailed off.

His visage softened and he composed himself before continuing. "I feel naive and foolish for having shared these details with you. By telling you, I have placed my life in your hands again, Cleric of Angharradh. I can only trust that if you and I are not on the same side in all of this, that you will, at least, allow me to go my own way unhindered." The wounded young being recounting a harrowing event was suddenly replaced by a soldier standing ready to accept his fate.
Aug 8, 2018 9:23 pm
"We have not met by chance, but by the will of the Goddess, brother," Maenor responds, his eyes crinkling as his smile deepens. "We are enemies of Caer Tan, and are on a mission of great importance. Perhaps you were spared because you are needed elsewhere."

He begins to lead the elf back to their wagon to introduce him to the others.
OOC:
Angharradh is the elven goddess of wisdom and protection. She is most definitely not on the side of the chromatic dragons, and a true cleric of the faith would be unable to countenance working with them.
Aug 8, 2018 9:35 pm
Reizei lets out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. Finding relief in Maenor's welcoming smile, he follows the Cleric toward the wagon.
Aug 9, 2018 11:07 pm
Reizei sees two horses pulling the wagon, and a pack mule tied to the back. Seated in the wagon are three others: a halfling, half-elf, and human.

At this point, the sun has set, and you are surrounded by the night. Only the pale glow from the moon in the clear sky offers any distinction within the desert land.
Aug 10, 2018 2:05 am
Kalis is surprised that Maenor is bringing someone back (alive), but trusts in the priest's judgment and raises his hand in greeting, "Hello, stranger," he says, "How are you feeling?"
Aug 10, 2018 2:31 am
The sight of battle has left Gyges feeling a bit sheepish. Even more so at the sight of the previously fallen warrior now striding over to the cart. "Hello! My name is Gyges," he says trying not to sound foolish, "and for you to be standing here before us now, ...clearly some divine power has great things in store for you."
Aug 10, 2018 10:27 am
Reizei lifts a hand mimicing the human's greeting. "Hello," he returns, "I'm not quite one hundred percent, but thanks to our mutual friend," he nods toward Maenor, "I'm well enough. Nothing a combination of sleep and time won't heal."

Turning his head toward Gyges, he glances quickly at the half-elf's ring finger then back to meet his eyes. "Well met, Gyges. I'm Reizei." A sardonic smile slips across his face briefly as he considers Gyges's closing comment. "Someone's looking over me, that much I think you must have true."

Reizei nods at the silent halfling and addresses the entire group. "I appreciate your having taken the time to not only investigate the scene, but to then make the extra effort to bring me back from the precipice. I'm in your debt." He pauses, seemingly considering his next words for a moment before concluding, "I'm not sure where you're heading, but if you'll have me, I'd be happy to help ensure you get there safely. Despite the state in which you found me, I'm competent with a weapon and helping protect you on the next leg of your voyage before I return to my own missions seems the least I can do to repay your kindness."

Maenor looks seriously at his comrades as he elaborates, "He is no friend to the Caer Tan, and thus a friend to us."
Aug 10, 2018 11:59 pm
Reizei shakes Kalis's hand. "Reizei. I would have liked to have gone through less trouble to meet you, but a pleasure none the less."
Aug 11, 2018 2:35 am
"Its late now, should we stop for the night?" asks Gyges. "Not sure if we should break for now or press on..."
Aug 12, 2018 1:05 am
"I'll be guided by the group, but although our friend here," he nods toward Maenor, "did a superior job of bringing me back to the realm of the living, the living are banged up and require sleep."

"I suggest we move a safe distance from this blood-soaked place and rest for the evening. However, if you are pressed to be somewhere, I can find the stamina to push through." He turns to the others and lifts an eyebrow.
Aug 13, 2018 9:34 am
"A wise suggestion," Maenor agrees. "Let us move some distance and then rest."
Aug 13, 2018 4:58 pm
Happy to move away from the sight and smell of the carnage, Kalis readily agrees to travel a bit longer before stopping.

Gyges quickly offers to take a watch. "I'll take the first watch," he says. "I think some of you probably need a bit of rest more than I do at the moment." "I didn't bring anyone back from the brink of death, but the least I can do is keep a lookout next to our campfire," he thinks to himself. Internally, he can't tell if he wants something adventurous to happen or not. The bodies strewn about the field where they found Reizei has taken the edge off his desire for wild times, but not completely.
OOC:
My apologies, there should have been a +2 on that.

Despite his recent ordeal and complete exhaustion, Reizei is incapable of not contributing. "If it's alright with everyone else, I think I'd be useless earlier in the night. I'll take final watch."

Before settling in, he can be seen drawing or etching something into the sand and muttering a few words. Once in his bedroll, the worry he feels about sleeping among people he hardly knows lasts only the briefest of moments before sleep claims him.

"Are you sure that was a dream?" Gyges asks. " I can cast a spell that is nowhere near that powerful, but that would let us converse over a long distance. What you described is like a far more highly evolved version. I must say, I'm stunned. If I'd known we had been in contact with people so powerful, I might have tried to learn more from them. Hmmm...do you trust the message as a literal statement?"
OOC:
Despite not really knowing too much about what actually transpired, may I have Gyges roll Arcana on that dream to see if he can recall anything about this kind of communication?

Gyges recalls references in texts about more elaborate forms of arcane communication. Beyond the limits of the Message spell, experienced spellcasters have the ability to contact people with the Sending spell over vast distances and even across the planes, which is something many operative handlers of the Pale Deva rely upon. Of course, such Sendings are limited to a few sentences and cannot support an extended conversation.

Some powerful spellcasters have been known to impart visual messages within a person's dreams, going so far as to communicate for as long as the person remains asleep. However, this is something Gyges has not yet experienced personally, and it is rarely referenced in any literature he had access to.
Aug 22, 2018 1:26 am
"Fascinating!" Gyges blurts out as recalls a bit of information relating to the dream conversation Kalis describes. "That was definitely magic, and not just a mere dream. Kalis! That's an amazing thing you've experience. I admit to being a bit jealous, but I think its likely trustworthy information, no?"
Aug 22, 2018 2:34 am
Reizei listens to the description of Kalis's dream and realizes immediately he is not only among friends, he is among brethren. Immediately his shoulders lower. He didn't even realize he was holding them in a position of stress. He breathes deeply and offers, "I believe the person in your dream is referencing my party."

"There were fourteen of us, and Rhakdia was our lead." He pauses to allow things to sink in before concluding, "I am the only one to escape the ordeal. A few, maybe as many as half the party, were taken prisoner. The rest lie in the sand and offer their corpses to the crows."

He looks up after a moment's respectful silence and asks, "You are Pale Deva, then?"

"We are. Welcome, brother."

"You said they were captured?" Kalis asks, "Do you think there's any chance that they still live and we could somehow break them from their captivity?"
Aug 27, 2018 7:00 pm
Reizei figures that a day or two has passed since the attack and his rescue from death's door. While he is uncertain as to whether prisoners are being transferred magically or through mundane means, it is reasonable to deduce that they'd be taken to the closest major Caer Tan location for processing, which would be Frysor Stronghold.
Aug 27, 2018 11:48 pm
OOC:
In addition to what CancerMan explained, Reizei would also have said...
"At least one of them was alive when they were taken, possibly more," he explains. "I have no idea what would be involved, logistically, in trying to rescue them. Unless it's a clear cut suicide mission, I would very much like to try." He pauses, looking off into the distance at nothing in particular.

"They were my compatriots and I owe them the attempt," he says. "However, no one is served by throwing our lives away. You seem well traveled and more experienced with Caer Tan than I. If you deem the risk too high, I will abide by your judgement and seek to honor them in other ways."

"Regardless, I'll be looking to take a toll in flesh from every Draconian soldier I meet in the near future..." There is a brief glint of fire behind Reizei's eyes that mirrors the passion in his voice.
Aug 28, 2018 2:42 am
"Do you know anything about this Frysor Stronghold?" Asks Gyges. "There's only a few of us at the moment. I'm sure I'd be up for the effort, but if the odds are grossly stacked against us then we might need reinforcements."
Aug 28, 2018 3:45 am
"I don't know enough to be helpful in designing an assault, unfortunately," he laments. "If we were to attempt a rescue, I'd imagine we would have to scout out the situation first, unless, of course, any of you know more about the stronghold."
Aug 28, 2018 2:15 pm
"Well, I believe we were going to bypass the stronghold originally, but I don't think we can do that now. We should at least go to the stronghold and see what we can figure out. If it looks like we have a chance to save them, then we should do so, otherwise..."
Aug 28, 2018 5:05 pm
Reizei nods to signify his understanding and acceptance of what Kalis said and of that which he left unsaid.
Aug 28, 2018 10:49 pm
Maenor hesitates a moment, then nods as well. "Let us be quick about it, though, for our mission cannot wait too long."

[ +- ] Common Knowledge of Frysor Stronghold
As you converse during your travel out of the desert, you begin to round the shallow canyon wall of a dried riverbed. Expecting more arid terrain, your attention is easily grabbed by the presence of a small encampment far off in the distance. From your vantage point, you can see the movement of a few figures near one large tent.

You estimate that the camp is two or three miles away, based on the relative size of the people. You see no wagons or other land vehicles, and a few larger figures may be horses or beasts of burden. From where you are, the land slopes at a gradual decline and the shallow canyon expands towards the vast desert plain. The camp appears positioned ahead of any approach out of your area.

Aug 30, 2018 8:53 pm
"Well... Should we go see what that camp is for?" Kalis asks the others, "I suggest we not get too close, but we should see if they are friend or foe, at least."
Aug 30, 2018 11:19 pm
"Yes, that would be wise."
Aug 31, 2018 12:00 am
Reizei nods his assent.
Aug 31, 2018 1:48 am
Proceeding forward, you travel towards the encampment. At times you are forced to maneuver the wagon into natural channels in the rolling canyon walls and lose sight of the camp, but the terrain is becoming more and more level as it descends into the plain. You estimate that soon you will not have any cover, if you should choose to remain unseen.

As you near the camp, you can pick out a few more details. There are horses gathered on one side, while the large tent is opposite. In-between are little lean-tos and smaller tents that circle a central point of blackened earth. More figures can be seen moving about, and while you are still too far away to pick out much detail, you do catch the reflections of metal as they move.
Aug 31, 2018 2:26 am
"Those people are probably armed...," Gyges mutters as they travel along. The glinting metal catches his eye leaving him almost hypnotized. He momentarily doubts their course of action, but tries to will himself to stay the course.
Aug 31, 2018 9:47 am
"We should leave the wagon and proceed afoot if we wish to remain unseen, which would be prudent," Maenor suggests.
Aug 31, 2018 1:26 pm
Kalis nods, "I agree," he says, "Let's proceed on foot and see what we can discover."
Aug 31, 2018 2:50 pm
"If we wanted to send just one of us in to investigate, I can make it so they cannot be seen." Reizei offers.
Aug 31, 2018 6:28 pm
"That's an excellent idea. I would go myself, but I'm not too good at the art of sneaking around," Kalis says, shrugging and look around to see who volunteers.
Sep 1, 2018 4:25 am
"I'm not so sure that sneaking is my strong point, but if needs be, I'l go," says Gyges raising his hand.

Reizei lays his hand on Maenor's shoulder and begins muttering under his breath. The arcane words bring about tendrils of arcing blue light which jump between them. There is a brief crackling in the air about Maenor as he slips from the visible spectrum. "Good luck, brother. Be safe."

As Maenor closes in on the camp, he sees that Gyges's intuition was correct; several armed and armored individuals mull about. A mix of humans, half-orcs, and dwarves occupy their time, dressed in leathers and chain mail, and armed with a variety of blunt and bladed weapons. None seem to wear any semblance of a uniform, but their demeanor and rough organization might indicate they are conscripts or mercenaries.

Looking at the large tent, Maenor assesses that it is large enough to allow at least a dozen people to comfortably sleep. There are small banners that sway in the desert breeze, each bearing the circular fanged maw that is the crest of Caer Tan.
Sep 5, 2018 9:13 am
Maenor watches silently, counting the mercenaries and looking to see if there is somewhere that prisoners might be held. He also looks for anyone who appears to be dressed without armor - potential magic users.
Sep 5, 2018 3:39 pm
There are eight mercenaries milling about the central fire pit, but Maenor counts at least twelve horses. He does not see anyone that might qualify as a possible spellcaster, though he is too far away to see inside the tent at this time.

Approaching the camp, the invisible cleric does not seem to attract any attention. Maenor draws near a gathering of three mercenaries eating from mess kits, and catches the middle of their conversation.

"Look, I 'ate the desert as much as you," says a dwarf male, pointing a small fork at the half-orc across from him, "but you know the gold is gonna be good. Them lizards is keen on they's contracts, remember? 'Sides, you heard the boss. We's only gonna be here a coupla more days t' make sure no stragglers come crawling out of the rocks."

A human male chimes in, "Gold or no, I'm with Bennett. Plenny of other work we could be doin' that's better 'n sitting here on our ass all day in the sun. Ain't nobody gonna come out that desert alive after what we done to 'em. I bet they's all dry bones by now."

The dwarf shrugs. "Ah well, lookit this way then. You's all getting paid f'r doing nuthin'."

The conversation turns to minor and trivial things, and Maenor focuses upon the large tent. The tent flaps are partially open, probably to allow some air flow. At this angle, he can see a small cot of canvas inside covered with a fur blanket and a sword belt. There are probably candles or some significant flame within judging by the play of light, and the shadows against the interior wall suggests two individuals are within.

Something catches Maenor's ears as dwarf says, "Anyways, finish yer grub and quit yer bellyachin'. We gots the next perimeter watch tonight, and I ain't reckon on listening to you prattlin out there in the dark."

"I hate these nights," mumbles the half-orc in response. "Whoever'd thought the desert would be cold at night?"

About 15 minutes into his return trip, Maenor's elven senses pick up movement in his peripheral vision. At the very edge of his darkvision, he sees a head poke out from behind some brush, accompanied by a drawn crossbow leveled in his direction. Freezing in place, Maenor watches the figure slowly sweep the area, before hearing faint voices.

"Thought I heard something," says a male voice in Elvish.

Another male asks in the same language, "I didn't hear anything."

The crossbowman makes another pass, before lowering the weapon and disappearing behind the brush. "Hm. Odd. Wait here; I'll take a look around."

The mercenary crunches across the dry brush. His footfalls look like he is trying to be stealthy, but the end result indicates he is more interested in seeking out his prey than he is with being quiet. The elf sweeps his crossbow across the area, back and forth, as he walks closer and closer towards Maenor.

He approaches dangerously close to the cleric, and as Maenor freezes the mercenary stops only five feet away. He lowers his crossbow, spits frustratedly on the ground, and with a final faraway look he returns to his partner in their hunting blind.

Maenor waits a bit more, and after ensuring that no further attention is given in his direction, silently continues on to return to his companions.

OOC:
I'm happy with whatever plan suits the group, however, Reizei might enjoy a little retribution.
Sep 19, 2018 4:09 am
"Could we distract, or even trick them? Maybe we don't really need to fight them all," says Gyges. Internally, he's hoping to avoid a bit of confrontation.
Sep 19, 2018 9:29 am
"I believe we could easily avoid them, should we choose. I understand the need for revenge, but destroying this outpost would only alert our enemies that there is need for a more significant military force here. Our mission, and the general need of the Pale, would indicate stealth would be the better option." He pauses and looks at Reizei with sympathy before continuing, "I may have felt differently if we had a chance to rescue your companions, but the risk does not currently seem worth the price."
Sep 19, 2018 12:52 pm
Kalis nods, "Avoiding them would be best, then," he agrees, "If our tasks weren't so pressing, we might have been able to deal with them, but for now we'd best not jeopardize our mission."

Among the beasts of the desert, there are giant versions of the snake, scorpion, and spider. There could also be underground monstrosities, such as ankhegs, bulettes, and purple worms.

Maenor also recalls that gnolls were nearby, and it's not outlandish to think other humanoid tribes like hobgoblins might call the desert home. Ogres and other giant-kin might wander about. Insectoid creatures such as the thri-keen like to lair in arid places, and rarer might be the kruthiks. The yuan-ti are also a possibility.

Then, there are the undead.
Sep 24, 2018 11:26 pm
Maenor explains, "I have the ability to reproduce either a small image or a sound. Do any of you share this skill? If so, perhaps we can convince them that the desert holds more danger than a handful of rebels. Frighten them enough, and perhaps they will flee."
Sep 25, 2018 12:16 am
Reizei smirks. "I like how your mind works. I, too, can create some small effects in line with what you've described. I doubt they will flee, but if we can rattle them, divide them, or get their focus turned in the wrong direction, perhaps we can gain an advantage when we attack. It should prove enough to tilt the field in our favour."

He pauses, reads his audience, then adds, "Provided they don't flee, of course."
Sep 25, 2018 3:35 am
"I have some tricks up my sleeves as well," says Gyges while mentally reviewing his spells. "I can't duplicate the effect you're describing, but I might be able to help with the diversion."

Reizei raises an eyebrow and tilts his head to one side. "What are you thinking, Maenor? Have you a plan, or were you hoping we would all come up with one together?" The last thing Reizei would want would be to upset whatever system the group had in place before being gracious enough to allow him to tag along. At this point he's just happy to be alive.
Sep 28, 2018 11:20 pm
"The latter, for I had the germ of a plan only."
Sep 28, 2018 11:53 pm
Reizei nods. "Then, unless someone has a better idea, might I be so bold as to suggest we, all of us, situate ourselves in the best position possible for ambush, and then, slowly, you and I lure people from camp with sounds from our bag of tricks."

"The first one might follow the sound, and sight, of a comely lass lost in the wild, or perhaps that of a rare animal worth hunting. After we waylay him, if all goes to plan, we could potentially lure a compatriot with visions and sounds of his missing friend."

He pauses and regards his new found compatriots, trying to gauge their reactions, "Thoughts, criticisms, amendments?"
Oct 1, 2018 9:35 am
Maenor nods, "A good plan. I have an idea for the first illusion. Shall we proceed?"
Oct 1, 2018 10:13 am
"Ready when everyone else is...lead the way."
Oct 1, 2018 2:21 pm
"I'm ready, and I have a spell in mind to lend a hand to the chaos. Lead on, " says Gyges.

OOC:
It is dark, and some do not have darkvision. I assume out of the interest in secrecy, no one has lit a torch or used a Light spell.

As you proceed toward the camp, will you be taking the cart and horses?
Oct 1, 2018 6:28 pm
OOC:
Nevermind, I see that the plan calls for luring people away from the camp. Reizei, Maenor, and Gyges have indicated they will sneak forward, and I assume that Coda and Kalis are staying with the cart since they lack darkvision.

The three that are sneaking forward, roll me a Stealth check. Also, are you going towards the main camp, where Maenor found some hidden sentries, or somewhere else entirely?
Oct 1, 2018 9:19 pm
OOC:
I imagine us circumnavigating the camp around the outskirts until we find a location suitable for our plan. The hidden sentries would be our first targets, and then we would work our way closer to the camp itself.

That's just what I envisioned. I'm happy to adjust if anyone else has another/better approach.

Edit: Yikes...

Kalis and Coda wait by the wagon, and can hear the trio trudging out into the darkness. Their footfalls fade as they traverse the desert, until they can no longer be heard.

As Maenor, Gyges, and Reizei approach the last-known location of the sentries, they come to approximately 120 feet from the hunting blind. Unfortunately, they are unable to visually confirm its presence at this distance.
OOC:
How close did you want to get? Note that while 120 feet is the range for the Message spell, Gyges does have to point his finger towards the target... and he doesn't know exactly where that target is. Maenor could give approximate direction and distance, and if that's the case, I might allow the spell to work with a spell attack roll.

Otherwise, what's the plan?
Oct 4, 2018 7:59 pm
Reizei gives Maenor a gentle nudge. Once having gotten the elf's attention, he gives him an exaggerated shrug and points, as to indicate the need for directional information.
Oct 5, 2018 11:38 pm
Maenor points in the direction he remembers, best as he is able. He peers into the darkness to watch for any movement.

Rolls

perception - (1d20+6)

(20) + 6 = 26

Oct 7, 2018 1:45 pm
Reizei freezes in place and stares hard in the direction Maenor indicates. Already feeling silly for clunking through the dark like a rampant Umber Hulk, the half-elf worries the sentries may already be alerted to their approach. He controls his breathing and listens for movement as he peers into the night.

Rolls

Perception - (1D20+5)

(6) + 5 = 11

Oct 7, 2018 4:50 pm
Maenor easily remembers where the hunting blind was, down to the exact distance in feet (120). Expanding his senses into the darkness, he detects no movement and no sound. It is as if the wind itself had died down.

Reizei senses the same as Maenor, though perhaps for different reasons.
Oct 10, 2018 5:09 pm
OOC:
Are you going to approach closer? If so, give me another round of Stealth checks.
Oct 10, 2018 8:56 pm
Noting the direction indicated by Maenor, Reizei heads off. Moving as stealthily as possible, he nevertheless keeps his head on a swivel. The Half Elf is concerned the sentry may have relocated or, worse, is aware of them after his own inept clunking about, and is, even now, circling around to ambush their ambush.
OOC:
2 is better than 1, right?....right? /goodgrief!

(2) + 3 = 5

Perception - (1d20+5)

(17) + 5 = 22

Oct 10, 2018 11:05 pm
The crunch of dry desert grass and dirt is audible in the clear night. Reizei maneuvers until he is 60 feet from the spot indicated by Maenor, and can now see something resembling a hunting blind in the far distance of his darkvision.

He then hears a voice hiss, "Hands up, scum," followed by the telltale sound of a crossbow bolt being drawn. The voice comes from his left, and looking there Reizei spies an elf crouched by some brush, aiming a crossbow at him.
Oct 11, 2018 10:06 am
Reizei winces and begins slowly raising his hands. As he does so he mutters a few arcane words under his breath.
OOC:
Cast Minor Illusion to make a voice right behind the elf say "Drop it!"

If the elf with the crossbow turns, Reizei will rush him with flail and shield leading the way.
Oct 11, 2018 3:54 pm
The elf whirls around, firing his crossbow bolt into the night.
OOC:
Minor Illusion requires only somatic and material components; no arcane words necessary.

I'd make you roll a Sleight of Hand check to see if you could pull off the casting, but I just rolled a 2 for Insight so you're good. Make your attack roll.
Oct 11, 2018 8:05 pm
Reizei charges as the elf spins. Hoping to subdue his opponent with slightly less noise than he's been making, he aims the downward ac of his flail at the guard's head.
OOC:
OK, seriously. Either I'm being punked, or this guy deserves to die for his unsurpassable levels of ineptness. Last three rolls are 1, 2, and 1.

Oct 11, 2018 11:22 pm
OOC:
Hey, go easy on him. He just saw a bunch of his friends die and was left for dead himself. Probably a bit rattled. :)

Roll for initiative?
Oct 12, 2018 5:40 am
OOC:
No need for initiative. Anyone else that wants to do something can act this turn, then it will be the sentry's.
Oct 14, 2018 9:17 am
Maenor quietly calls upon his deity and then rushes in to join his companion.
OOC:
Casting Silence centred on the scout, then full movement toward them.
Oct 15, 2018 7:40 pm
Gyges follows Maenor, concentrating on a spell he intends to release should the second sentry reveal themselves.

The elf sentry before Reizei quickly realizes what's happening and manages to twist out of the way. The flail head strikes the ground with a silent thud, and not even a whoosh of air can be heard. The elf grins maliciously and he says something, only for the words to seemingly disappear.

Confused at the silence, the elf's expression turns into a snarl and he fires his crossbow from the hip at Reizei, before dropping the weapon to attempt to draw a blade. The bolt zips silently into the night sky, wildly missing the warlock (Disadvantage 9 vs Reizei AC 16).
OOC:
Player turn!
Oct 15, 2018 8:50 pm
Reizei grins at the silence and makes a mental note to thank Maenor later for his quick thinking. Getting increasingly frustrated at his failings, the elf starts to wonder whether or not he truly made it out of the last attack the same person he was accustomed to being. Pushing that discomforting thought to the background, he refocuses on the task at hand, regrips his flail and lashes out at the sentry before him.

Rolls

Attack - (1d20+6)

(9) + 6 = 15

Damage - (1d8+4)

(6) + 4 = 10

Oct 15, 2018 9:02 pm
The flail cracks solidly into the sentry with significant weight as the elf reels from the blow.
Oct 15, 2018 11:15 pm
Maenor peers around, listening carefully for any sign of the second sentry as he moves toward the silent battle.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+6)

(13) + 6 = 19

Oct 15, 2018 11:43 pm
Maenor detects no movement and hears no sound coming from anywhere else.
Oct 16, 2018 2:23 am
Gyges holds his concentration on a spell for a bit longer, but gives his colleague a silent thumbs up to congratulate the kill.
Oct 16, 2018 4:19 am
OOC:
Quick note, the sentry's not dead/unconscious, just reeling from the flail's impact. I apologize for not making that clear.
Oct 17, 2018 2:27 am
"Should we check if that sentry is dead?" asks Gyges.
Oct 17, 2018 9:55 am
OOC:
I was assuming it was obvious his is not dead, and we were just waiting for him to take his turn. If we can take another action, Reizei will check by burying his flail head in the elf's skull.
Oct 17, 2018 4:37 pm
The elf tries to shoo the motes of disorientation away, and he silently draws his shortsword to thrust for Reizei's gut. The blade slips past Reizei's shield and jabs into his side (21 vs AC 16, 4 piercing).

The sentry tries to yell something, and remembers he cannot. He starts to run, heading in the direction of the hunting blind.
OOC:
Player turn! Reizei can make an Opportunity Attack if he wishes to use a Reaction.
Oct 19, 2018 9:57 am
Seeing the elf dash off, Reizei's heart leaps at the thought of him being able to sound the alarm. He immediately lashes out with his flail and sets himself in pursuit.
OOC:
Reaction: Attack of opportunity
Move: Follow the elf if he's still running
Attack: If Reizei can get close enough for an attack, then he'll O'Hara, if not, he'll dash to keep close to the fleeing baddie.

Oct 19, 2018 4:24 pm
Spinning like a top, Reizei brings his flail around to intercept the fleeing sentry. The weapon caves in the elf's face and drops him like a lumpy sack to the ground, unmoving.
OOC:

"Is he really dead this time?" Gyges asks. He nervously around for any signs of anyone.

Perception - (1d20+2)

(9) + 2 = 11

Oct 20, 2018 3:02 am
In his immediate area, Gyges doesn't see any movement besides his companions. No sound carries over the air, not even Reizei's labored breathing within the area of Silence.
Oct 20, 2018 5:16 pm
Reizei turns to Maenor and his lips move as if saying something. he immediately stops and visibly laughs, though no sound is audible. Instead, he winks and gives a thumbs up to the quick thinking Elf who saved them from discovery.
OOC:
Next move?
Oct 21, 2018 9:51 am
Maenor grins and holds his palm forward above his head as he drops the spell. He silently gestures toward the hunting blind and makes a circling motion. He quietly suggests to Gyges, "Wait here, and draw him out once we are in position." He then circles around the blind to the left.
Oct 22, 2018 10:05 am
Reizei absorbs the quick details of the plan and falls into step behind Maenor. Feeling the fool for having caused potential disaster for the group, he allows his new compatriot to take the lead with a renewed determination to be of worth rather than a detriment.
OOC:
He follows Maenor into position. Assuming you need a stealth check (oh god!), and he'll have his eyes peeled as they go. Feel free to ignore either roll or ask for any other that you need.

Rolls

(7) + 5 = 12

Oct 22, 2018 4:01 pm
Crunching through the dry brush, Reizei follows Maenor until they reach a suitable position flanking the hunting blind.

Reizei hears nothing, but Maenor's keen senses manage to catch the faint sound of conversation. While he cannot make out what is being spoken, the voices carry from beyond the hunting blind, from the direction of the main camp, and are coming closer.
Oct 22, 2018 11:28 pm
Maenor puts out a hand to halt Reizei and gestures: to his ear, then two fingers up, to Reizei, then down at the ground, then to his own eyes and ears, then to himself, and to the direction of the sounds. He raises his eyebrows to see if his miming is understood.
Oct 23, 2018 12:21 am
Reizei furrows his brow...then gives a slow nod and makes a gesture as if planting his feet.
Oct 23, 2018 1:39 am
Seeing the others carry on ahead, Gyges feel an odd mixture of relief and fear. Mentally, he goes over his spells to keep himself occupied so that his anxiety doesn't overcome him.
Oct 23, 2018 11:33 pm
Maenor smiles and slips off into the darkness, trying to get close enough to make out what the voices are saying without being seen.

Rolls

Stealth - (1d20+4)

(19) + 4 = 23

Oct 24, 2018 12:50 am
As Maenor treads quietly across the desert, he nears the hunting blind. He can definitely hear two voices now, and he recognizes them as belonging to the dwarf and half-orc he saw at the campfire. Judging by the sound, they are approaching the blind.

The half-orc grumbles, "We was going to the desert. Why is it cold in the desert?"

"See, tha's why you always keep a spare towel in yer pack," says the dwarf. "Not the small kind, too, but a big one. Prob'ly the most useful thing a merc can have, aside from 'is weapons."
Oct 24, 2018 10:56 pm
With a small smile at his new companion's clever plan, Maenor calls upon his power and a sultry feminine voice speaks from the darkness, "I can warm you up."
OOC:
Casting Minor Illusion, in the direction away from the blind and the camp, and toward Gyges.
Oct 25, 2018 4:42 pm
The conversation and progress of the dwarf and half-orc stop. There is a pause.

"Okay, that's just wrong," says the dwarf. "Dammit, Bellas, I know we been on the road for over a month. I don't care what you and Silvaril do in that blind, but c'mon! Be a professional!"

The half-orc grunts, conversation returning between the two of them, "Didn't we just see Silvaril walking back?"

"Yeah. Bellas prob'ly had to stay to clean up. Bah, now I can't sit in there; who knows what's on the inside?"

"Use your towel."

"Hey, now you're learning."

The footsteps can be heard now, coming closer.
Oct 28, 2018 1:24 pm
OOC:
Will they pass by close enough to see me? If not, will sit tight and let them discover the empty blind.

If so, then will fade back quietly.

Rolls

stealth if needed - (1d20+4)

(14) + 4 = 18

Oct 29, 2018 4:43 pm
Maenor's position opposite the duo's approach leads him to believe he will not be spotted.

The footsteps stop. "Ya finished yet, fey-boy?" says the dwarf.
Nov 4, 2018 5:22 am
OOC:
What do the stealthy Pale scouts do? It seems as though the approaching dwarf and half-orc are waiting.
Nov 4, 2018 9:29 pm
After having screwed up twice in a situation that requires silence and precision, Reizei obeys orders and remains where he is...silent...and awaits Maenor's first move.
Nov 5, 2018 12:51 am
After they are safely past his spot, Maenor casts again, this time the space between the blind and Reizei seems to be the source of the call, "One of you, come see what I found."

There is a long pause. Finally, the dwarf says, "Head to yer post. I'll see what's up."

In a louder voice, he says, "All right, elf, whatcha got?" The sound of boots tromp beyond the blind, heading towards Reizei.
Nov 6, 2018 9:43 pm
Reizei, catching on to Maenor's plan, readies himself. Backing quietly into a deeper shadow, he prepares his flail. This has to be taken care of quickly...preferably in one swing....

Sure, I guess the best option then is magic missile.
Gyges quiety focuses and let's loose a blast of kinetic energy at the target his companions are currently engaged with.

Do you want me to roll damage for each one, or one roll per cast?

Rolls

Magic Missile - (1d4+1)

(4) + 1 = 5

Nov 8, 2018 6:19 am
OOC:
Rules as written, you roll once. Me, I don't care and allow the player to choose. What I won't do is let you roll once, then decide. So you either roll for each missile on the same line, or just once.

I assume in this case you've chosen to roll once for all missiles.
The magical darts strike the dwarf in sequence, driving him into the ground where he lies still.

From the hunting blind, the half-orc asks, "What was that?"
Nov 8, 2018 2:39 pm
OOC:
A bit more on the subject of Magic Missile. Since the damage is only rolled once by RAW, the Evocation Wizard 10th level ability "Empowered Evocation" adds your int mod to every missile. Assuming that you have a 20 int, this makes each missile do 1d4+6 damage!

Ok, I'm done. I'll let the game continue :)

There is a sigh, and the boots of the half-orc come tromping out of the blind.
OOC:
Are Gyges and Reizei hiding, or just hanging around the dwarf's body?
Nov 12, 2018 3:22 am
OOC:
Gyges will just be hanging around the dwarf's body. I'll keep playing him as naive. Hiding wouldn't occur to him unless someone suggests it.
Gyges looks down at the dwarf and wonders what's next. Did we win? he asks. I don't know how I feel about this. Is this dwarf really dead? Did I do that?

Are you moving towards the half-orc now, or staying put while you cast your spell? If you do advance, I'll need a Stealth check to see if you remain hidden until your next turn. Alternatively, you could move forward and not roll Stealth. Up to you!
Nov 20, 2018 3:37 am
OOC:
Definitely staying put for now.
Nov 20, 2018 3:59 pm
Ignoring the arrow in his back, the half-orc growls and draws a shortsword. He lunges for Reizei with a quick strike, but the blade rings off of the shield (7 vs Reizei AC 16). A follow-up thrust goes wide as the half-orc slips on blood (critical miss vs Reizei AC 16).

Kalis takes a single step away from the scorpion and simply watches it, watching how its legs work in perfect harmony to carry it across the wagon seat. He tries not to focus on his companions, knowing that he needs to trust in them.
OOC:
I have not read the party's posts since they've been away from the wagon. I'm trying to play as if I don't know what's going on, and it's easier to do if I really don't know :)

Hearing the metal ring off the shield, Gyges gets up and heads over to aid Reizei.

Gyges' spell summons a small wooden lizard that appears above the half-orc's shoulder and drops onto the studded leather armor. There's the barest of flinches, but it's all that Reizei needs to smash his flail into the mercenary's neck. At the same time, another arrow thuds into the half-orc's back, and he joins the dwarf on the ground.

Silence settles.

There is naught but silence.

Maenor believes that with the hunting blind secured, a path is available to skirt around the main encampment. Passage may still be difficult with the absence of light, but he reasons that their chances are better now that this section of sentries has been neutralized.
Dec 2, 2018 11:51 pm
Maenor returns to his comrades and shares his supposition.
Dec 5, 2018 6:50 pm
OOC:
At this point, you could try to navigate the cart around the camp. Light may not be a problem if those with darkvision will take the reins and either drive or lead the horses and wagon.

If this is the plan, I'll need an Animal Handling check for whoever's handling the horses. If someone else wishes to assist, describe your Help action and advantage may be provided.

If you wish to be quiet about your travel, I'll take a general Stealth check from everybody to represent the group's effort, so hopefully more of you succeed than not.

Otherwise, if there's another course of action you wish to take, feel free to plan it out.

1d20+4 : (14) + 4 = 18

Dec 17, 2018 6:27 pm
The pace is slow as you travel. Maenor easily calms the horses and manages to lead them across the dark desert.

As you proceed, you become keenly aware of how much noise the cart makes. Each bump, each shift of wood and wheel seems to echo like the clattering of pans in the clear night air. Even the cold dry ground crunches underfoot like an avalanche of stone.

Your path, however, is unimpeded. You pass the neutralized hunting blind without issue and traverse until you draw nearer to the main encampment. The fire is low there as it seems much of its occupants have turned in, but you can easily see the slight movements of two sentries at watch, perhaps listening for any reports from their scouts.

At one point, it seems as though one of the guards notices your passing, straining his eyes and ears over in your direction. He holds a torch high and walks a few feet out of the camp, but after a few tense seconds he returns to his post.

You put the camp behind you just as the dawn lightens the sky. The sun has not yet risen, but the morning comes soon.

As they pass by the camp, Kalis sighs in relief, not relishing the thought of fighting in the dark. As the sun rises, he feels much better about the journey ahead.
