Episode 2: The Bronze Age

Maenor documents his study of the stars. The desert sky at night is clear and peaceful, and to a near-immortal being like the elf, it nearly frightens Maenor with how infinite the stars seem to be in number. He latches onto the constant and anchors himself in the steady orientation of certain lights, and gleans an understanding of the universe's order within chaos. Using those fixed origins, Maenor develops his own patterns in the night sky and documents the memory, creating a positional guide that he is able to transpose onto any map or physical space.

Kalis spends a lot of time trying to learn more skills that will be useful for the road and he seems to be less useless than he was before. During downtime, he spends his time reciting tales that he's read to his companions, trying to keep morale up and stave off the boredom of a long journey. He seems to get really into the telling, using many different voices and happily giving any background information to his companions that they ask for. It seems that he truly has passion for the tales he tells, but whether he's actually good at it...

Gyges is also given a book with seven pages torn out of it in a variety of places, written in a language that is not familiar.

In the beginning, the talent was without form, and void. Darkness masked each character, until the creator birthed new light into their personalities. Voices gave shape and exaggeration gave distinction. The generic moulds created by authors of the past were shattered by the whims of the storyteller, and things that were not became thus.

Coda appreciates the drive behind Kalis' tales, and secretively gives a few pointers to help the man hone his skill.

Kalis initially starts with the tried-and-true stories, reciting them verbatim as best he can. He starts to work on his improvisational skills in order to keep the story flowing, which lends a vibrancy to the words and paints a fluid portrait of all characters. The tales gradually take on new life with new excitement.
OOC:
Congratulations to everyone on roleplaying this skill challenge. I was quite happy to read and react to your setups, and got very excited in writing up the results.

I was going to pick just one, but in light of everything, I have to say that you're all winners. All of you earn 1 point of Inspiration that you can use at any time.

Follow-up question: what's the plan for traveling to Barad-Sari? Do you intend to stick to the wilds, or make a stop at Frysor Stronghold?

You do have enough supplies provided by the goblins to last you the journey, presuming that you are able to forage for supplemental things along the way.

Awesome, thanks! It was a fun challenge.

Is the Stronghold what it sounds like, a major military base?
Jul 19, 2018 12:15 am
OOC:
Frysor Stronghold is indeed a major military base. It is situated next to a large freshwater lake that serves as an oasis in the middle of a desolate wasteland, and also serves to secure the northern border of the ancient white dragon Sumadea's "domain."

There is a sister city of sorts with Lepool Stronghold, eight days of travel away, that serves the same purpose for the ancient green dragon Alikil, and there is a bit of a rivalry between the two governing bodies. While there hasn't been any open conflict between the "Bane of the North" and "Rime of the South," it's no secret that political play and one-upmanship happens often.

Despite whatever perceived tensions there may be, Frysor Stronghold is still a city. There are traders and caravans that travel from Frysor Stronghold to other places (the caravan you were sent to rendezvous with originated from Frysor), but it's not a major trading hub. With few Caer Tan cities in the desolate wastelands, security is a primary concern and a significant military presence is obvious.

That's not to say that visitors aren't welcome. Citizens of Caer Tan enjoy a freedom to travel to many places and Frysor is no exception. Unfortunately, there isn't much for a tourist to do save for a fishing cruise upon the lake, and the journey through the deserts to get to Frysor is not something of a priority for your average vacationer.

Assuming the group is together at the moment...
"So! We're off soon," says Gyges a little excitedly. "Do we have horses, or a cart? How are we going to get to this place? I'm all for walking, but I feel like it might be kind of far. What do you think woud be best?"
Jul 19, 2018 3:48 pm
OOC:
You have two horses and a mule. There is the option to take a wagon that was once part of a merchant caravan.

OOC:
We take the horses and mule in addition to the cart
Studying their route, Kalis points out the stronghold in their path, "If we take the road, we'll be passing through Frysor Stronghold," he says, and then looks to his supply list, "I think we should have enough supplies for the whole journey. Perhaps it would be best to skip past it. No reason to risk getting caught."
Jul 20, 2018 2:54 am
"I agree," says Gyges wholeheartedly. "We'd probably need to be on the lookout for patrols as well. Are we going to look suspicious on the road? I mean, how much traffic is there next to a military installation?"
Jul 20, 2018 8:47 am
"We could go overland instead," suggests Maenor.

With a wagon full of supplies, you set out into the desert. You receive some directions on leaving The Trackless Barren and head eastward toward the distant town of Barad Sari.

Buoyed by his knowledge of the stars and relying on the advice gleaned from goblin scouts, Maenor has no difficulty in navigating an efficient path across the desert. To others, it might seem as though the mesa that jut from the parched earth look no different than the hundreds of others they had passed the day before, but the cleric is confident in both direction and distance.

Near the end of the day's travel, just as you mull the thought of breaking for camp, both Kalis and Maenor spot something on the northern horizon. You have seen many things in this desert, but this bears a bit of interest. For the briefest of seconds, you catch a glimpse of reflective light, as though the setting sun glints off of something metallic.

Kalis is unable to tell how far off that near-instantaneous flash of light is, but Maenor assesses that it will take a few hours' worth of travel away from their current direction.
Jul 31, 2018 3:56 pm
"Should we press forward to see what that flash was, or should we go look in the morning?" Kalis asks of his companions
