Backstory:
Not much is known about Khamal, even to himself. Born thousands of years ago in what is now Northern Iraq,
Khamal was a Sassanid warrior-noble whose city was overrun by invading Roman legions. He fled with his
pregnant wife out into the desert, and found refuge in a cave at the foot of a mysterious mountain in the middle
of the wastes. Khamal's wife and child perished during childbirth, as the arduous journey had left them all weak
and sick. Dying himself, Khamal swore vengeance with his last breath. A mysterious entity awoke from beneath
the mountain, and struck a bargain with him: he would be granted the power to enact his vengeance, at the
price of being its servant throughout the millenia. The dying warrior agreed, and was reborn with great strength
and immortality, granted to him by a mysterious rune in the middle of his chest.
The warrior soon found that the Rune granted him the ability to heal wounds almost instantly, and that upon
death, the Rune would bring him back, but at a price: sometimes a memory, or at times the rune would take
over his consciousness for days, even weeks at a time, directing his actions towards is own agendas. Even when
Khamal was in control he felt the desires of the Rune at times directing his actions.
And so Khamal waged a shadow war with the Eastern Roman Empire, using his strength and guile to stir the
enemies of Byzantium against it. In doing so he gained the enmity of the Arcani, the secret Roman brotherhood
that ruled the Empire by controlling its emperors. This war in the shadows was waged until the fall of
Constantinople and its subsequent sacking, during which Khamal personally slew the Acrani inner council.
More than a thousand years late, Khamal had taken up residence in Millenium City, having travelled across the
breadth of the world, fought in its wars, and wandered at the Rune's behest. He lives comfortably, having made
some very long-term investments, but the increasing availability of information has made it increasingly difficult
to erase his paper trail throughout the years. His immortality has made him distant from regular people, as over
the years he had seen too many friends die.
His circle of friends is limited to Lucien Fawkes, Millenium City head librarian, and Brother Darius, Abbot of the
Millenium City Brotherhood of St. Peter. He has also taken a guardedly romantic interest in museum curator
and antiquarian Ms. Lawson, but is careful not to let his involvement with her become a liability, as his enemies,
the Arcani and its offshoot secret societies, are ever on the lookout for revenge, and a chance to capture him
and discover the secret of his immortality.
