New Playtest Coming Up!

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

I've been working on a system for the past six years, because my old gaming friends had a problem with what was available, and I like writing just that much. I know I've brought this up before in a very old and dead thread, but I'm here today to announce some very, very good news. I will be starting my first official playtest of my system, currently under the working title of Oldest World, this coming September! No exact date set at this time.

What I expect is that setting this up will take some time, and will take a lot of explanation. We may gain and lose a few people before the game even starts. Because of this, I would like to get in ahead of the curve, and start the process a week early. Here's what I need:

- About 5-10 people who are interested in trying something new, and have experience with at least one other system. Even if you've only played a couple of sessions of D&D, that's just fine. As long as I don't have to explain how tabletop/PbP games work to anyone. The reason for the large number is that I fully expect some people will drop off as we go, for any number of personal reasons related or unrelated to the game itself. That's just how recruitment tends to work.
- I tend to be on every day between the hours of 6:00 PM - 2:00 AM EST. Because of how this site works, that is not terribly important, but if you expect prompt responses from me outside of that time, prepare for disappointment. I would like players who, whatever their availability, can be on Gamers Plane at least twice a week, for no less than 10 minutes at a time. Ideally, you should be able to check the playtest once per day within the time that I'm on, but that is NOT a requirement at all.
- If you have not played roleplaying games before, or you check the site very rarely, I welcome you to join, but I'll be handling you separately from the others until we can figure out what works best.
- If you have a character from a fantasy game that represents your preferred style of play, please bring it so I can get a feel for the sort of character you want to be. Even if you end up trying something totally new, your old hats will be really good fuel for my creative fire (please ignore the possible metaphor here for burning your character sheets hehehe)

Finally, and most importantly: players who participate in this playtest need to know a few things. This system is woefully untested. I've played with older variants in the company of family and friends, but the current incarnation is totally untested. Please be ready to comment in and out of game, bringing your critique on how the system works, and the clarity of my explanations. Please try to be kind to me and the other players, because I do want this to be enjoyable, and I don't want to ban people for being assholes. Because this is something that I do not want stolen, and hope to make a little money off of someday, I will ask that everyone who participates read a quick blurb about who owns the rights to the system, and agree to my terms of use. Everything will be spelled out clearly, and there's no complicated legal jargon or money-related nonsense. This playtest is totally free of any fees or fines; you do not have to pay anything at any point.

Just know that this is my baby, that I've spent the worst years of my life working on, alone and unpaid. Stealing its contents for yourself would be a god-awful thing to do.

I'm interested in play testing this and would love to try something new. I have some experience in pbp for D&D 5e and I'm currently getting into Call of Cthulhu 7e. I regularly check this site and others daily so that won't be an issue.

Wow! You caught me before I hopped off for the night. I see a lot of promise so far, but do you have any concerns with the rest of my post? Namely, do you have one or more characters I can look at from your past experience, and are you willing to read my terms of use blurb when I present it?
Aug 25, 2018 10:27 am
No concerns so far, and yes I'm willing to look at your terms. I currently don't have any from past games on here but I have a few character sheets that I'm currently using on DnD Beyond and one on here for Call of Cthulhu 7e on here. I'll put up a link to the ones on DnD Beyond and there backstory's. Will this work?

Bartram Shadecrest
BACKSTORY
Bartram Shadecrest has always been interested in gathering secrets, especially if they can be used to help others. From a young age he would enjoyed blending in or trying to go unnoticed, listening in to the conversations around him. Using this information he was able to trade it to the right people for money and food. This skill and talent for espionage eventually caught the eye of Bozeman Marchet of the spy group The Hidden Eye, who quickly recruited him into there ranks and trained him to hone his skills.

Alexander Wenzel Eusebius Beaumont
BACKSTORY
The Beaumont family is no stranger to wealth, power, and privilege, that is until they lost almost everything. With no warning the Beaumont estate was attacked with Alexander ending as the lone survivor of the family, having been away, learning to become a paladin just like his father and his father before him. Hearing the news of his family's death from Andres Winters, a half-elf who worked in his family's library, he swore vengeance on the ones on the ones that killed them. Leavening the estate in the hands of his family's steward, he vowed to return only when he found the justice he was looking for. Leaving with Andres, they now go where the leads take them while Andres sings of his exploits

Hey

I'm just getting back into RPGs and tend to favor Play-by-Post as an ideal roleplaying medium.
Currently playing a 5e campaign here (Shackled City, GM LadyBrash), overall fan of roleplaying games and D&D in particular, and curious and eager to try your system, for sure.

As far as availability, agreeing to terms etc, I don't see a problem on my side.

I normally go for talkative rogue-types or mute and gruff rangers, but I'm open to try my hand at all types of other characters.

Here are two links to dndbeyond builds I have played (or am currently playing):

1.Drudhar Kar-Errendi, Druid/Monk

BACKSTORY:

Saved as a child from slavery by a group of Druids, he was probably the son of a mercenary from the southern lands though he never knew his father. His mother was killed when he was a young child, but she could have been meddling with the Arcane Arts from what his adoptive druidic clan could tell him, which was very little.
He never could really feel whole in the company of men and traveled deep into the wilderness, where he meditated, prayed and communed with nature, honing his faith and his fighting skills for the nearing challenge: the world is quickly changing, and his beloved woods shall soon be needing his protection.

When that day comes, Drudhar will meet the foe with his massive club Drynnyr firmly clenched in his fist and the wrath of His Gods shining above his brow.

2. Amber Jack, Spymaster

BACKSTORY:
The younger son of a seaman and a seamstress, Jharen "Amber Jack" Korvac rose from humble beginnings, selling sea-shells and chasing loose coins in the docks districts as a street urchin, to quickly becoming one of the Sword Coast's most notorious thief and smuggler, carving a name for himself as a professional scoundrel with a strong ethics code and a rare nose for profit, operating first under Cloakmaster Herenhadt in Waterdeep then increasingly as a solo operator in Baldur's Gate, following the infiltration and relocation of the Shade Council.

After trying his hand at various facets of his not-so-honorable profession, he now specializes in investigation and information-gathering (With the occasional breaking-and-entering, should the need arises) for the Harpers, who seem to know the valor (and monetary value) of a true professional.

I'd love to play and help out a fellow game creator, and help you with some balance and feedback.
I can't really give a favorite fantasy character type because my favorites cover several types and I like playing several types.
Looking foward to playing!

So this is down in writing somewhere in case of future concern, and hopefully one day I'll have legal verbage to back this, as the developer and owner of this site, I will make no claim to any content you create off this site but use this site to test and further develop.

This isn't meant to be anything more than a reassurance that I love seeing people make things, and I'm really honored you're using GP to further your work, and I have no intention of ever making claim on it, besides if it ever explodes, claiming credit for being part of helping advance it :D

Refreshing, and I wish more people thought as you did. :)

I totally agree, it's great to see artists supporting other artists as opposed to being territorial and/or trying to steal.

Keleth, I'm touched, and I really appreciate that you took the time to do this. Gamers Plane has kept me sane these last few months, being unable to get a job or get out to meet people, and you've given me amazing opportunities to test things like my system and the weird little story I've been writing. You absolutely deserve credit for allowing me to run a game in an unlisted system, because I tried to playtest this on Roll20 some time ago, and was threatened with a permaban by the admin. When I publish this, I'll make sure to write in the acknowledgements that your site helped push this game one step further.

I would be interested in playtesting a new system.. im actually in the same boat, testing one of my systems through pbp with a group, and I wanna do some playing rather than doing, learn new systems and whatnot... Definitely interested... I for sure have info on character style I enjoy and I have a few questions about your game... I'm new to Gamersplane but I'm really interested in joining a game! I've played adnd 2e before as well as some other Homebrewed systems..

I am new to PbP and only signed up for this site within the past hour or two, but I would love to playtest if you still need people! My old DM was writing a system and I was part of his playtest group. Beyond his playtest stuff, I've played Numenara, Pathfinder, Fate, D&D 5th, and some less crunchy games that are more roleplaying/narrative based, like Tremulus, Ten Candles, and Fiasco.

My characters tend to be the strong, silent type. I'd like to expand on that, try something different and flex my roleplaying. Playing by post will make that very easy, I think.

As a matter of fact, the first group was intended to be 4-5 people in size. We have four including Octopus, so you'd round out the full size I wanted. Welcome aboard! Check your PM.

Hey there WalkerOfSorrow. I'm hoping that you don't need me, but I'd love to be a part of what you're trying to do. Even if I'm a stand-in for others IF they have to drop for whatever reason. Perhaps add me in as having access to the forum, and then if someone drops I'm not catching up from the very beginning? I'm a fellow game designer myself, though my niche market is in the 4-8yo range due to my own little rugrats circling me as we speak. :)

Simkin, you're more than welcome! I'm willing to run multiple separate groups, but no more than 5 people apiece. So until you have teammates, you'll have to be on your own. Is that okay?
Sep 17, 2018 12:19 am
Sounds like this filled up? Can I apply for group 2?

Let's see, who have I run recently... Well, this is not a typical character, but it is a fun one?

Yónfëa Elwenar (can't remember what it means - something in Quenya like Child of the Mind or something - you'll see why)
