Looking for a Shadowrun Game

Quite a simple request, really - I've very recently got into Shadowrun (4E in particular) and would be really interested to know if there are any GMs out there up for running a game for it, or if there are any free spaces in a current one. I'm pretty sure I've got a decent grasp on how to create a character after messing around on Chummer for a while, though I may need some smaller facets explained. Other than that, I'm really interested in giving it a shot.

Hey Bleak, how's it going?

I would also be interested in some Shadowrun 4E... I've got some irons in the fire that make me hesitant to jump into running something. But depending on where a couple of them go in the next couple weeks, I might be able to pick this up...

I know that may not be very helpful, but... well, just wanted you to know your not alone in this regard :)

That's not a problem, really! It's good to see interest a least. I'm in several games at the moment, so it's no worry. Find myself with an excess of free time lately, so I've decided to explore some new games outside of my usual D&D, seeing as I now have the means to actually do so on GP.

In the longer term, I'd love to play or run Shadowrun, but I'm probably overextended due to poor impulse control.

Interested, but i only know 5e...

While it's probably easier to go from 4E to 5E (cuz you're decreasing the amount of crunch/increasing consistencies that already exist in most places), the principle of the system is the same.

You could play something "simple" (a street samurai/razorgirl-guy/gun bunny, infiltrator, etc. - anyone that didn't use Decking or Magic basically), with no problems. Just have to re-learn how Initiative works.

Maybe an infiltrator.

If someone can explain 5E's character creation to me, I'd be up for giving it a go. It was actually the first one I looked at, but I found it much more complicated.

I could do that easily. Would be glad to help.

Sounds good. I'll read it through once more, see if it makes any more sense. I was already planning on playing a mundane character, anyway, face mostly, so the simple concept is fine.

5E did add Limits, which is a level of crunch that was not in 4E (unless you used/were familiar with some of the optional Hacking rules in 4E), as well as some new mechanics like Static and G.O.D. but it otherwise unified all the systems (mainly bringing Decking back in line), except Initiative which it broke-up again (😑 but it is for the better, game balance-wise), so it is kind of a wash as to which is "actually" more complex.

But the consistency of 5E goes a long way toward teaching it to ppl completely new to the system, I think. And it is generally better balanced overall, with regards to 'ware costs and things...

Though I do not like Priority Charter Creation... that's just a personal preference.

That goddamn priority table was the thing that threw me, actually. One of the reasons I preferred the character gen for 4E where it just gave you a flat number of points for all characters. (I think?) I get what they were going for, but it just seemed weird and convoluted. I'm aware there are other methods (Like Sum-to-Ten or something) but I didn't look into them.

Also, PhoenixScientist, if you are up for something, feel free to PM me if you wanna sort something out. Same for anyone else, actually.

It's really a return/throw-back to earlier editions of Shadowrun.

And while it does do some positive things towards really delineating character-types/choices, I find it too restrictive for my liking.

On the positive side, there is a Chummer for both 4E and 5E. Have you played around with Chummer 5? It helps learn the Priority Gen a lot.

I originally had Chummer 5, but the problem was that Chummer wasn't like some other generators where it automates a lot of the process (Thus making it easier for new players to see where numbers are coming from and going to, etc.), so you still needed to know where you were spending points. There was also the fact that I had no reference for what an average shadowrun character looks like (Still don't, actually), stats-wise, so it was a tad overwhelming.

UPDATE: I looked back into 5E, using Chummer in particular, and it's actually much simpler than I originally thought. Definitely be willing to give it a shot now.

I've been trying to play Shadowrun for awhile. I had a game going, but after many weeks of it limping along, it finally died.

I'm down to play. I have the 20th Anniversary Edition and I'd love to play that one. If we went with 5th, I'd have to buy that book and learn a new rule system when I haven't even learned or really played 20A like I want.

I'm no expert, but 5E doesn't seem to be all that different except for character creation, and even then you can just use Chummer to handle most of the maths. I think I've actually retracted most of my original complaints about it. You can get the PDFs for free online, if you just wanted to test it.

That said, 20th anniversary was the first one I learnt, so I'd be down for playing that, too.

I kinda feel like Shark, but on the other side... I think I'll just wait to see whether this game goes to 20A or 5e. I think it shoulf be decided on where the most interest is.

Also, Shark, I could get you a copy of the PDF's of 5e, but i get the hassle of learning a new system.
Sep 7, 2018 5:39 pm
Definitely. I'm game for either, so it'll purely be down to what other people are interested in doing.

And no hard feelings either way!
