How to create an investigator

Sep 29, 2018 3:46 pm
Let's start with character creation. For those who are not familiar with Call of Cthulhu, playable characters in this universe are called investigators. To begin with, we are going to roll stats with the integrated dice roller bot.

Basic statistics

We need 5 different 3d6 rolls to assign to Strength (STR), Dexterity (DEX), Constitution (CON), Appearance (APP) and Power (POW). Then, we roll 2d6+6 four times for Size (SIZ), Intelligence (INT), Education (EDU) and Luck.

1. Strength (STR) measures the raw physical power your investigator can bring to bear.
2. Constitution (CON) is a measure of the health and hardiness of your investigator.
3. Power (POW) is a combination of force of will, spirit, and mental stability.
4. Dexterity (DEX) is a measure of your investigator’s physical agility and speed.
5. Appearance (APP) measures the physical appeal of your character.
6. Size (SIZ) reflects your investigator’s combined height and weight.
7. Intelligence (INT) is a rough measure of your investigator’s cunning and ability to make leaps of logic and intuition.
8. Education (EDU) is a measure of the formal and factual knowledge possessed by the investigator, as well as indicating the time the investigator has spent in full-time education.
9. Luck is used when circumstances external to an investigator are in question, and when determining the fickle hand of fate.

Then, we roll 2d6+6 twice for Education (EDU) and Luck. I forgot on the first post about those two, sorry! Once rolled, we assign those four 2d6+6 results to Size (SIZ), Intelligence (INT), Education (EDU) and Luck.

After all of them are assigned, we multiply them by 5.

Also, for your better understanding of the values given to each stat, this is how numbers are interpreted: http://oi66.tinypic.com/288v31d.jpg

I will update this post soon.

Here goes nothing.

That turns out to be pretty similar to what I rolled up with real dice. Except I mishit a key and did a d8 instead of a d6. Since it was a max roll I will just change the 8 to a 6.

Rolls

STR, DEX, CON, APP, POW, SIZ, INT - (3d6, 3d6, 3d6, 3d6, 3d8, 2d6+6, 2d6+6)

3d6 : (654) = 15

3d6 : (636) = 15

3d6 : (325) = 10

3d6 : (565) = 16

3d8 : (448) = 16

2d6+6 : (62) + 6 = 14

2d6+6 : (36) + 6 = 15

Sounds simple enough. My turn.

Nice, we have to assign each 3d6 roll to a base statistic (STR, DEX, CON, APP, POW).

I'm going on a slow pace because I assume some of you did never play Cthulhu. If you want me to skip this, just tell.

Also, for your better understanding of the values given to each stat, this is how numbers are interpreted: http://oi66.tinypic.com/288v31d.jpg

I'm completely new to this system so I appreciate the explanation. I'm thinking about doing my base stats as

STR-7
DEX-12
CON-11
APP-12
POW-13

Rolls

2d6+6

(34) + 6 = 13

2d6+6

(15) + 6 = 12

Sep 29, 2018 7:22 pm
Adding the other rolls and assigning everything. Below should be it.

STR-7x5=35
DEX-12×5=60
CON-11×5=55
APP-12×5=60
POW-13×5=65

SIZ-12×5=60
INT-13×5=65
EDU-13×5=65
LCK-12×5=60

I'm familiar with CoC by now, so I'll help out if any of you need a hand.

On that note, Dole's House is a really, really good place to generate and store your sheets. Handles most of the numbers for you, and lets you export it as a really nice PDF afterwards.

Anyway, rolls.

That makes:

55, 70, 45, 35, 50

65, 70, 40, 40

I'll assign them in a bit.

Assigned:
STR: 45
DEX: 55
CON: 35
APP: 70
POW: 50
SIZ: 40
INT: 40
EDU: 70
LCK: 65

Hey, GM, is it possible to get a brief rundown of what this campaign is about or how it starts? Might help me decide on an occupation.

Can I assume that the site of the crash is in Roswell, NM? I'd like my character to come from a neighboring county or possibily even Albuquerque.
Sep 30, 2018 7:01 am
I moved my stats around and made my character a boxer. Used the website which really helped out a lot. Let me know if I messed anything up on it.
Sep 30, 2018 7:06 am
Just one thing to note about Dole's House is that it automatically rolls for education improvement and applies it. I had to reset my character because I failed the roll here but it succeeded there and gave me an irreversible +9 to edu, which messed with skills. Just something to keep an eye out for.

If you opt for rolling your characters with Dole's House directly, let's assume the stats are the ones chosen by the generator. Just not to mess up with the EDU, as you said.

When you have your investigator done, create a character sheet in GP and submit it to the game. If you have any doubt, just tell.
Bleak says:

Hey, GM, is it possible to get a brief rundown of what this campaign is about or how it starts? Might help me decide on an occupation.
Cannot reveal much, but it's somehow related to laboratories, interviewing people and so on.
Aldrusian says:

Yes, the crash is somewhere in Chaves County, NM.
Sep 30, 2018 3:22 pm
Yeah I thought that it was weird that it would let me input the base stats but wouldn't let you be able to decide on the addition to the EDU stat. The website had some quirks but it was really helpful.

I rolled for my character backstory and got this for my significant people, A fellow investigator in your game. Pick one or choose randomly. And the reason why, You wish to prove yourself better than them. What was their flaw? (e.g. lazy, drunk, unloving). Anyone have any suggestions on who and why?
