Character Creation Thread

Oct 2, 2018 5:45 pm
Hi all! Thank you for joining me on this adventure. My goal is to help us all understand better the Playtest system, and to practice playing it.

Please research the newest updates to the rules and use those when developing your character. Please let me know if you have any thoughts or questions.

From what I have seen, "lore" is used as trades/jobs. So I was wondering if a "seamstress" lore was acceptable, as if my character tailored/making cloth items?
Oct 2, 2018 7:43 pm
I think that could work under Mercantile Lore, and you can leverage that into your Seamstress job, if you would like.
Oct 8, 2018 5:10 pm
Greetings everyone, thanks for letting me join.

So I don't end up making the same basic character as someone else already here, what characters do we currently have?
Oct 8, 2018 5:46 pm
Welcome, everyone. Thanks for joining my game.

So far, we have 4 players in this 5 player game, and we have 2 adventurers thus far.

Please submit your characters using the most up-to-date rules from Paizo on the playtest. (We are on rules updates version 1.3).

Please send a link to your character sheet in the character sheet slot, as well as providing a relevant backstory to your character.

So far, we have an elf abjuration wizard, and a human paladin.

Have fun!

As the aforementioned paladin, hello all! I'm still reading all of the play test material, so if I miss anything, just let me know. Also, I do try to avoid the "lawful stupid" and "no fun allowed" tropes when it comes to paladins. But let me know if I start to wander over there, and we'll see if I can't reign that in.

Hey everyone, just letting you know that Paizo released Errata version 1.4 today.

Please update your characters appropriately.
Oct 9, 2018 6:45 pm
Still waiting on Meribson and Deep_Lore to build out some characters.
Oct 9, 2018 10:17 pm
Alright, looks like the update for Humans and Paladins was fairly minimal, so I should be ready to go.
Oct 10, 2018 2:17 pm
Sorry it's taking me so long, life got pretty hectic all of a sudden. I should be able to whip up a character tonight. Currently thinking either an alchemist or a rogue.
Oct 11, 2018 1:37 am
So I'm putting together a half-orc alchemist named Gerrek. His formulae book utilizes the following system of measurement: pinches, dashes, handfulls, scoches, etc. As you might have guessed, he's self-taught.
Oct 11, 2018 2:12 am
That sounds amazing. Can't wait to see how that plays out.
Oct 11, 2018 3:04 am
He's loosely adapted from an old character I had in pathfinder 1e, a half-orc mutagen focused alchemist paired with a halfling bomb focused alchemist. Half-orc would chug a strength mutagen, then charge in with his falchion while the halfling chugged a dex mutagen and lob bombs.

Session 1 started with the two of them entering a small frontier town. The main storyline was in the tavern, and we didn't go there until session 3...there was a library in town that had books from a wizard's personal library before they died. The GM later told us that he had been thinking in his head "GO TO THE FREAKING TAVERN!!!"

*EDIT* This Gerrek is going to be more of a Strangelob than a Hyde type alchemist

I'm going with the young (18-19), slightly naive (just finished training) paladin. I think I've finally found a crafting system that doesn't require advanced mathematics to figure out, as well as the shield/dent system, so I'm eager to try that out some. We've got the Alchemist, me on the front lines, and a Wizard. So far, seems like the start of a fairly balanced party.
Oct 11, 2018 4:18 pm
I've never seen alchemist played before in any campaigns so excited to see that. Looking forward to the campaign with you guys! :) I'm the wizard, btw. She's an adult in terms of elven age, and she is a scholar of her own right, training at an arcane college in her home city and down a lot of library work. However, she decided magic needed to be practiced and she needed her own real-life experiences than those told in legends. So off to travel she goes, landing herself in our current campaign.

Any updates from our fourth player?
Oct 15, 2018 5:16 pm
I haven't heard from them, and I told them that they had the weekend to respond before I dropped them. If you know anyone interested in playing, tell them to reach out to me or just try to add themselves to this game.

Sounds fair. I'm still super new to the site, but I'll see if anyone I know IRL might be interested.

Hi Everyone,

How would people feel about changing this to Rise of the Runelords?

Please let me know!

Thanks,

Justice
Oct 17, 2018 4:43 pm
I know that's an old adventure, are you taking a 2e version of it?
Oct 17, 2018 5:44 pm
I know there was a reprint for Pathfinder a while ago. Never really got a chance to try it out, so I'd be down to give it a try.
Oct 17, 2018 6:06 pm
Yes, I would convert it to the playtest system.
Oct 17, 2018 6:12 pm
I'm ok with both. Haven't been in either one, so I'm going in with out any meta knowledge.

That's actually what I'm running in my local playtest group. However, I am pretty good about keeping player!knowledge separate from character!knowledge. Especially in PbP, it gives me more time to formulate "What would {Character} do here?"

In short, I don't mind either way, but if you'd rather not because I'm running it that's fine.
Oct 18, 2018 3:40 am
I'm fine with it!

My run through of RotRL has only had character creation plus about 2 hours of game time. And a goblin PC.

I have one of "those" groups, one of the players built his character's personality around an accent that makes horse sound like whores (and vice versa) and is a brewer that made his own drink called Horny Horse with a unicorn for the label. He described a goblin landing a crit on his character as the goblin running forehead first into his crotch. I allowed it.

Additionally, my Golarion's Magnimar has a theater comedy group composed of 3 actors who have specific characters they play name Larok, Curly, and Moe. The gnome druid yelled out "Hey Moe!" while doing a 3 Stooges eye poke combined with Shocking Grasp.

At least my group is never boring.
Oct 18, 2018 4:43 am
I don’t mind if you’ve run it before. I just wanted to make sure that you all were okay with the change before making it.
Oct 18, 2018 3:24 pm
Sounds good to me. I hadn't put anything in that was adventure specific for the character, so I don't need to change or update anything.
Oct 18, 2018 4:19 pm
Alright, then. The only other piece is that the adventure starts in a city called Sandpoint, in Varisia. There is a festival to celebrate the completion of the cathedral of Desna there (the previous one was burned down about 5 years before).

Why are your characters at this festival? Think about that as I attempt to get another player to come.
Oct 18, 2018 7:43 pm
Gerrek recently moved to Sandpoint (less than two months) after the Licktongue goblins in the nearby Brinestump Marsh grew too bold. He has done what he can to help out around the town, be it manual labor or providing alchemical goods to town guard (or hangover cures to the drunks).
Oct 18, 2018 11:02 pm
Theogrin would be recently completing his basic training, so travelling wouldn't out of the question. Seeing to the dedication and completion of a new temple would be worth a side trip for sure.
Oct 24, 2018 10:13 pm
Probably same concept, except new destination of travel! On to replying ASAP.

Thackery comes from a rather well off hog raising family that is located in a village that does a lot of business with dwarves(they love their bacon, am I right?).
The dwarf hold was busy dealing with an enemy force and couldn't spare any defense for the small village so they but together a militia to deal with the small force of raiders.
Thackery, being the second oldest, took up grammy's sword and joined up.
The old blade needed some TLC so the resourceful boy used what he had and got the blade polished up nice with some lard from his family's Red Hog farm.
The repelling of the raiders took a month or two but was a resounding success. So much so that the militia located where the raiders have been holding up and finally getting with a small regiment of dwarves, took the fight to the raiders and erased them from the map.
All told this whole venture took no longer than year.
Thackery, happily, returns home and resumes work on the farm. He had some many stories to tell about the new raiders dagger that he pulled from a chieftain's body.
But he wasn't really happy. Was lost in thought a lot, staring into the middle distance for minutes on end. He loved his family, and his work, but he wanted to do more. He felt like he could do more out there again.
His family noticed this and secretly ordered a fine ironwood shield, bound in dark iron, to be made by the dwarven hold nearby.
They even ordered a red boar rampant to be painted onto the face, edged in red gold.

One night, they had a big chicken dinner and presented Thackery with the shield and grammy's sword and told him to go be hero he so wanted to be. He had their blessing so he hit the road.

While on the road he decided to take the surname Militia because he hated being only thought of as a Farmerson.

I think this is how he finds his way to Sandpoint, just wandering on the roads and hearing about the festival.

Does this work?

That's a great backstory!

Man, now I remember why I dislike carnival games...

Danke.
I've been holding my happy-boi back story for a while.

Everyone welcome Ngetch to the party! We just started the first combat, so there is plenty of opportunity for you to join in the fight and fun!

Let me know if you have any questions about creating a character in the playtest system.
Nov 9, 2018 7:13 pm
Thanks guys! Looking forward to joining up with you all! I should have my character finished by tonight!
Nov 13, 2018 3:30 pm
Hi Everyone!

Ngetch pointed me to the 1.6 rulebook updates, which has class updates that (for some classes) is pretty significant. Please update your character sheets appropriately.

Thanks,

Justice
