Hook Horror Hunt (3rd level, RETIRED)

Nov 3, 2018 2:08 pm
OOC:
For Stacy, Ziggy, Rettle, Tip, and Corunir. And Campeador's wizard!
The Underdark... the companions did not arrive here by choice. Happenstance, misfortune, fate... whatever brought them to this world of darkness and endless danger, all they want now is to return to the surface world.

So far, they have managed to avoid the worst threats that come from wandering the myriad tunnels and caverns, but after days of travel an event befalls them that they will remember forever - if they live through it.

The tunnel before them is lit only by whatever sources of light the party bears. The first sign of trouble is a series of heavy *clacks* that echo across the stone, the direction of the reverberating punctuations impossible to discern.

Having traveled this far in the silence of the Underdark, the companions know that anything making this much noise must either be predator or prey.
Nov 3, 2018 4:13 pm
Having been considered a prey animal most her life, Tip knows what to do. "If something with lots of teeth, or tentacles, or claws or something shows up, everybody scream."
Nov 4, 2018 7:17 am
"Indeed, should a monster dare threaten us, we shall shout a mighty battle cry!" Corunir declares, drawing "Valor", his longsword. "Onward, friends!"
OOC:
"The tunnel before them is lit only by whatever sources of light the party bears." What light sources have we got? Or does everyone besides me have darkvision?

EDIT: Since this is a playtest to see how class features work, it would be cool if everyone made their character sheets viewable by adding them to the Character Library.

"A battle cry?" Tip scratches her chin thoughtfully. "I guess that's just as good."
OOC:
Tip has night vision despite being human (yay predator ranger), and we've got a dwarf and a gnome. Not sure about the other two.

The DM already has access to all our sheets. Are you meaning so that players can view them also?

Yep, if the intent is for all of us to evaluate these homebrews. But Araklusta et al only want us to evaluate our own characters and not the others, then ignore me.

"Ugh, no crying please. I have a hangover, and I've heard crying non-stop for the past 15 years." Stacy takes another sip from her wineskin. "How about instead of a battle cry we do a battle whisper?"

Don't worry, Jabes, I've got you. Casting Darkvision on Corunir.
"Hold on, Corunir, before you go charging off..." Zanzur weaves his magic, and Corunir's human eyesight begins to pierce the darkness. "Alright, off you go!"
OOC:
Corunir has 60ft Darkvision for 8hrs. In addition, Corunir's armor gains 2 Infusion Charges.

A large red-haired man wields a flaming torch towards the front of the party as they move together.
"I hope we are not being hunted. It would not do for a Chieftainson of the Flametongue tribe to die in some dark hole."

OOC:
@Jabes - I'm certainly interested in what everyone thinks of all the subclasses. Shortly I'll make some a new thread for each of our subclasses dedicated to just delving into the nitty gritty if people want to discuss them.

For this situation.... A few of the members of this group are human, and so lack darkvision. If no magical light is available, the party has torches either of fire or harvested from glowing mushrooms found earlier.
Two large figures (Hook Horrors 1 and 2) burst suddenly from a side passage into the tunnel before the party. Each one is tall and covered in thick chitinous plates like armor. Beaks sharp enough to rip flesh from bone take up most of their faces, and each arm ends in a heavy claw - from which the clacking sounds come.

The two creatures shy away from the party's light with reptilian hisses. One raises its claws threateningly towards the companions, while the other cocks its head back towards the side passage, as though listening. From their posture, it does not seem as though they were expecting to find the party here.

OOC:
To be clear, they aren't necessarily attacking the party yet, though they certainly will if the party chooses to fight. Still, I'm dropping it into a combat round because more stuff will be happening - and also to give you all an intro to how I like to run pbp combat. If you haven't seen it yet, check out the Speedy PbP Combat rules I recently posted.

Short version here: No initiative, just post your actions for the turn. I will sum up the round's events at the end before the next round begins.

You have 24 hours from now to post your turn! Any longer than that, we assume that your character simply takes the Dodge Action.

"Ilmater's snot!" Tip jostles the arms of the nearest party members. "Look at them! Their arms are all, 'kss kss kss!'" She hooks her fingers like claws and waves them around. "Oh, this is going to be so awesome." She unclips the twin whips from her belt and prepares to set them flying.

Tip will wait to see what her companions will do before attacking.

@Campeador - If we were sitting around a table, you would have probably had a better idea of if Darkvision was a good spell to use. I'm fine if you want to retcon casting that spell! But notice how even with a "wasted" transmutation spell, you still get *some* use out of it with the charges!

"Didn't your mothers teach you any manners?" Stacy slides up next to Tip and bludgeons the Hook Horror with a rolling pin. Unfortunately it bounces off doing no damage. Frustrated, Stacy attempts to bend it over her knee and give it a good paddling to teach it some manners.

I'm not bummed about the casting of the spell, but rather the learning of it. Could've learned a different 2nd-level Transmutation or Evocation spell. But it's a playtest, so it's not a big deal. The point is to test these class features, right? I'm good, thanks!

So Corunir's armor should have 4 charges now, correct? Do I get to use my reaction to detonate them in the same round I transfused them?

Zigurd tosses the torch he is holding, in hopes he might recover if this fight goes well.
He reaches up to the large metal handle over his shoulder.
From the frog on his back he draws a large, slightly curved blade.
The sword is very reminiscent of a large tooth.
"The Flametongue line will not end this day, monsters!" he yells with a rage as he charges into comabt with out of the horrors.
At that same moment, he toothy blade explodes into flames, bathing the tunnel with more fiery light than the sad torch on the ground.

Round 1 Summary

The large monsters move to defend themselves as the party closes in. One of the plated brutes swings an enormous claw at Corunir, but stumbles as Tip's whips crack against its face. With a screech it swings about and buffets the young ranger with a long limb, a nasty crunch sounding as it connects (Tip takes 11 damage).

The other hook horror doesn't even flinch as Stacy's rolling pin bounces off its chitin. It snatches the woman up in a claw and hurls her to the ground (Stacy takes 13 damage), but before it can do more damage Ziggy steps up to deliver a fiery smack to the creature's side that melts away the natural armor there to slag. The monster hisses and turns on the barbarian, but to its dismay finds Stacy wrapped around its leg in a mother-bear grip, holding it in place.

Corunir's light builds to a blinding glare as - thanks to Zanzur's spell - the paladin doubles in size. With him a suddenly standing head and shoulders taller than the hook horrors, they recoil against his presence and shrink away.

A chorus of strange, yipping laughter washes over both heroes and monsters as a handful of new figures lope out of the side passage the hook horrors came from. At first all that can be seen of their features are yellow eyes that are much too large, scattered amongst glimpses of ragged fur and the glint of iron weapons. Then the newcomers step crookedly into the party's light, revealing four gnolls. Their hyena features are painted with manic toothy grins, and they grip their spears with furry hands that tremble with the thrill of the hunt.

At this arrival, the two hook horrors attempt to flee. One brushes past the heroes, heedless of their attacks. The other, hampered by Stacy, nearly falls on its face, unable to rid itself of the stubborn woman.

One of the gnolls spits out a string of unintelligible, hiccuping yips, and the hunters move to attack.

Round 2 Player Phase!!
OOC:
Please indicate which creatures you are attacking! Or else I just have to guess... It also helps if you sum up the damage you've dealt and to which creature.

Hook Horror 1 provokes opportunity attacks from the 4 heroes in the melee so just go ahead and roll those before taking the rest of your turn for this round. If it lives, it then runs down another side passage opposite where it came from (red diamond symbol indicating that attacking it THIS round will involve following it and moving away from the group).

Hook Horror 2 is grappled by Stacy!

@Campeador - Yes, detonating charges the same round you infuse them is cool with me. Reactions kind of take place between rounds... it's all timey-wimey. I think it's fine!

@MattParody - I would write your damage as "2d6+4" and then clarify with a quick reminder that 2 of that is fire damage.

Stacy gives Hooked Horror 2 a good thumping and keeps him pinned to the spot.

@Campeador - watch out! You can only infuse charges when you cast Transmutation spells (Magic Missile is Evocation). Also, it *should* be that the max number of charges that a suit of armor can hold at one time is your intelligence modifier - but looking at it right now that doesn't seem very clear in the rules. Hopefully that's the only major hiccup with wording mistakes for now

Round 2 Summary

Filthy jaws dripping froth, three of the gnolls leap forward to engage the party, while one hangs back looking for a chance to hurl its spear.

Ziggy meets these new foes head on, and his upward slash leaves a burning furrow across the chest of the foremost gnoll. The resulting yip of pain sounds maddened as the gnoll continues its whining chuckles. It thrusts its spear forward, but Ziggy easily sidesteps the blow. A second gnoll joins the first, and manages to sink the tip of its spear into the barbarian's shoulder - but that is hardly enough to bother the mighty warrior (After resistance, Ziggy takes 4 piercing damage).

The gnoll in the back spots a seemingly-easy victim and throws a spear at Tip. The young ranger shows uncanny reflexes, however, as she ducks away from the projectile.

One gnoll, thinking itself clever, slips around the tougher combatants and moves to strike at Stacy. It announces its presence with a shrill squeal of glee - and Stacy twists away to avoid the stabbing spear.

Seeing the woman distracted, the hook horror tries to kick Stacy away, but the woman's stubbornness knows no bounds. The creature can only look on as it's partner escapes into the tunnels.

Round 3 Summary

The battle grows fierce as the gnolls tear into the companions and Ziggy, Corunir, and Tip each take a wound (Ziggy and Corunir each take 6, and Tip takes 7). Between them, the three manage to take down the lead gnoll, but the other three continue their mad giggling. The one who hung back before now joins the other on the front line (Gnoll 3 is now up next to Gnoll 2, both engaged with Ziggy and Corunir).

Witnessing the fierce battle, the hook horror decides it is through with this insane woman grabbing its leg. It brings both heavy claws down onto Stacy, clubbing her to the ground with ferocious strength, then wheels about and stomps away after the other monster (Stacy takes 23 damage, is reduced to 0 hp and is knocked unconscious).

The gnoll nearest to Stacy swipes at the departing hook horror, but then it's yellow eyes fall onto a much more tempting target. It slams its spear into Stacy's shoulder and drags the woman across the stone floor to a nearby wall. Then it leans over her with its drooling hyena maw, ready to begin its feast (Stacy takes another 12 damage, which counts as 2 failed death saves).

Zigurd, further enraged due to the new wound and hearing Stacy’s scream, turns of his heel with Red Tooth ablaze in hand.
"STACY! Leave her be you flea-ridden mongrels!" Ziggy threatens as he charges into the gnoll standing over Stacy’s prone form.

Tip frowns as Stacy falls under the gnoll's assault. Things are getting serious.

Tip pats her wounds and the pain lessens. All the better to survive. (Tip casts cure wounds and gains 5 HP)

HP: 12/25

OOC:
@Campeador- If you take too long to post, Araklusta assume your character takes the dodge action. So your turn isn't wasted, but it's still probably better for you to post on time.

Also, to everyone, I've been lazy but above is how Araklusta likes the posts formatted every time so it's easiest for him to run things.

Round 4 Summary

Zanzur's magically catapulted rock shoots through the air towards the nearest gnolls. One ducks away from the projectile, but the other is caught unawares and takes a crunching hit (Gnoll 3 takes 10 bludgeoning damage).

Noting their fallen ally, Corunir and Ziggy both rush heroically to Stacy's aid - though Corunir feels the painful jab of a spear punch through his armor as he focuses on moving quickly (Corunir takes 8 piercing damage. Zanzur can use his reaction to detonate any charges placed on Corunir this turn).

The gnoll looming over Stacy looks up sharply as the two warriors approach, and quick as a snake stabs Ziggy in the side (After resistance, Ziggy takes 2 damage). Then, between swords alight with flame and divine radiance, the lone gnoll is easily slain.

But two gnolls remain. With the larger warriors occupied, the monsters leap gleefully towards the weaker companions. One of them bears down on Tip and pokes her hard with its spear, giggling maniacally at her cry of pain (Tip takes 4 piercing damage).

The other gnoll skirts around the young ranger and charges Zanzur, weapon aimed for the wizard's gut... (Zanzur can use his reaction to cast Shield here to deflect the attack, but if he does he cannot also detonate the charges on Corunir)

Rolls

Gnoll 2 opp vs Corunir - (1d20+4)

Round 5 Player Phase!!!!!
OOC:
Given how Catapult works, I figured it was fine to include gnoll 3 within its effect.

Zanzur can use his Round 4 Reaction to either detonate a charge on Corunir or use his Shield spell to avoid taking damage.

Given the reach of Tip's whip, she can use her Round 4 Reaction to make an opportunity attack against Gnoll 3.

Gnoll 2 is by Tip.

Gnoll 3 is by Zanzur.

Stacy is 1 failed death save away from being killed to death.

OOC:
Lay On Hands. 10 HP healed.

Tip raises her arms high and barks at the Gnoll in front of her. It looks startled, and Tip begins to back away towards the rest of the group, hissing and spitting and yipping like a very angry Gnoll. Or at least, what she thinks one sounds like.

When she has backed up enough she turns and runs over to her allies.

Tip disengages then runs over to stand with the others. She attacks with her bonus action. Gnoll 3 takes 4 damage from the opportunity attack. Disregard the second attack roll.

Seeing the healing go off Zigurd turns back to the 2 living gnolls.
He assesses the situation and takes off for the gnoll that Tip disengaged from.
He rushes in, Red Tooth held low with flaws aglow.
"Eat this!" he commands as he makes an upward slash

Zigurd moves and attacks Gnoll 2.
Gnoll 2 takes 2 damage.

I'd also forgotten about the extra damage from Enlarge! Given that, and with all the damage dished out this turn, these gnolls are toast.
The last two gnolls continue to fight till their last breath, each one dripping drool from yellowed gums. One of them lands one last stab against Tip (Tip takes 4 piercing damage).

If 12 hits Zanzur's AC, that'll be 3 damage to him)

Under the divine power of Corunir's hand, Stacy is saved from death's door!

With the gnolls dispatched, the heroes are left standing alone in the tunnel, but echoing down the tunnels they can hear the insane yipping of other gnoll hunting parties. It seems that the companions are stuck in the middle of a closing web of ravenous foes. Getting out in one piece may be tricky.

"Excellent work, Corunir! That’s was some quick thinking there." Zigurd says as he moves to help Stacy back to her feet.
"We need to be more careful, this place might be trickier than we anticipated"
Nov 19, 2018 10:33 am
"Definitely tricky!" Zanzur breathes, hand to his side where a gnoll spear pierced it. "Speaking of tricks, Corunir," here, the little gnome cups his hands and calls up to the magically embiggened paladin, "How did you like those armor charges? Not too distracting, I hope?"

"Stop bleeding," Tip grumbles, poking one of her wounds. It obliges only grudgingly. Tip huffs, then casts her eyes about. She finds what she's looking for on one of the tunnel walls. She scrapes some clay free and smears it over the rest of her injuries. Tip sighs with satisfaction. (Tip casts cure wounds twice, gaining 10hp.)

"How amazing were those hooky guys, though?" She offers her small hand full of clay to the others in the party. "The dog things were gross. I don't like dogs or dog things. Maybe we should follow the hook guys. They seemed like they knew where they were going."

The party is kind of stuck in the middle of this hunt, but with the victory of those gnolls and having saved Stacy, I'm happy to declare that everyone gets the benefit of a short rest! So recharging channel divinity, making use of arcane recovery, spending hit dice, go for it!

@gardensun - if you want to save some of those slots spent on healing for later, and use hit dice instead right now, that's fine with me.

Corunir kneels down on one knee, his shining armor all the more resplendent thanks to its current vastness. His normally deep voice echoes in the cavern. "We all fought valiantly, Zigurd. And I would not let any of you come to harm. They will sing songs of our deeds this day!"

Peering down at the Zanzur through the visor of his helm, Corunir adds, "Your magical charges were wonderful! But I it is difficult to ensure that none of our friends are caught in the blast. It would help matters if I were to charge in alone!"

Zigurd sheaths Red Tooth, which helps to out the flames licking along the curved blade.
Taking a few deep breaths and fingering at the hole in his ancestral cloak, he looks around listening to the conversation and then pipes in, "I beleive those hook monsters were being hunted by these hyena-men. I think the real threat lies deeper in the caverns. Follow the hideous laughter. But I wonder..."

From what Ziggurd can remember about gnolls, they value the hunt above all else. Even in the best of times, a part of gnolls would pursue their chosen prey until their feet became bloodied stumps.

These gnolls, however, seem even more voracious. One word their leader spoke suddenly sticks out in Ziggurd's memory: Yeenoghu. The name of the gnolls' demonic deity. If gnolls are gathering in greater numbers throughout the Underdark, they will threaten more than hook horrors.

Ziggurd suspects that there are at least two more groups of gnolls in the tunnels nearby, though given the nature of the echoes it is nearly impossible to know where they might be located in relation to the party.

"We have not begun to try and follow their war packs, Tip." Zigurd says as he walks over to where the gnolls lay.
He’s looks for prints and other signs which he might use to track them further into the tunnels.

Removing his dragon winged helm to scratch his redhead, he looks about the tunnel at the wild tracks as they cross cross and jump around, "Bah, this makes no sense! Crazed demon-beasts!"

Alright! So I hit a bit of a busy stretch, and now I'm coming back at and looking at this and wondering if that was a good enough snapshot of these characters at this level?

Do you guys want to keep going, or have another go with level 3, or build level 7 characters (same characters or new ones)?

Either way, feel free to leave some comments here or in the individual class threads about what you think of the subclasses so far - either yours or the ones you've seen in action, or even just some general thoughts you have about them.

BEHOLD!! After a long banishment to the planes of chaos, we have returned!

All of the subclasses have received updates and we've added several more! Instead of continuing on Gamersplane, however, we have a Discord server, though it will still be play-by-post. With the D&D Beyond integration, it should be just as easy as Gamersplane for our purposes, if not moreso.

If you're interested at all in re-joining the ranks, head on over and take a look!
