The Assassin's Heart [ EDIT ]

The governors, chancellors, counsel men and woman, even prominent business owners are nervous. It seems that in the past year, the number of prominent people who have died has increased. It looks natural, no illness or foul play reported, but people of influence are getting scared and when they do, it is those under them who usually suffer.

You are employed by Phyrel's Trading Company (pick your role, but make it have something to do that would lead to travel). the company has grown over the years since you started, having posts and warehouses in five major cities now. Everyone you work with seems happy.

You have made this caravan run before, along the Wyr River. Other than a few minor skirmishes, there has never been any trouble. Today was different. As the caravan was breaking camp, it was ambushed. These creatures came in from the shadows and killed beasts of burden first, before anyone knew what was happening or could react. Then in a flash, your friends started dropping to their knees, holding their heads and screaming. Looking around, you see several mud like creatures holding devices and pointing them at you. A flash and you too drop. Lights and sounds, indescribably beautiful flood your senses and you smell bread baking. Is this heaven? You squint and blink and squint again and through the colors, you see the mud men. They are unloading the caravan and putting everything into a shiny metal box next to the rivers edge. It seems like an eternity, but when they finish, the box closes and sinks into the mud. The men follow, diving into the mud and they are gone. You try to move, to get up, but your body just wants to sleep.

It's midday before you wake up. The wagons are empty and only a few others are stirring.
