Dragonlance: War of the Lance [ EDIT ]
This game has been retired! That means it's no longer being run.
Play through the Dragonlance Saga as original heroes, rather than the Companions of the Lance! Rather than play the classic characters, each player will create a unique hero to take on one of the crucial roles. I must have at least four players, and I can handle as many as ten. This campaign will play through the entire War of the Lance, though the sequence of events may not prove to be exactly like those of the novels.

I'd like to begin by having everyone select roles. We have to have at least four roles covered; the leader, the prophet, the rogue, and the sage.
The Leader should be a charismatic fighter-type or a noble. In the novels, this role was filled by Tanis Half-elven.
The Prophet needs to be willing to pick up at least one level of cleric at some point early in the adventure. A dedicated cleric would be very useful, but you need not exclusively be a cleric. Goldmoon took this role in the books.
The Rogue needs to be someone who can open locks, disable traps, and generally get into places that he or she is not supposed to be. This could be an actual rogue, or perhaps a bard, or even a ranger or master with the right skill picks. Tasslehoff was the rogue in the novels.
The Sage should be someone with a lot of knowledge, Raistlin is the classic quintessential mage, but this character need not necessarily be a wizard (though a wizard would be helpful in this campaign).
These are the big four, the classic roles that must be filled in order for the adventure to work. The rest of the roles are optional:
The Ranger could be portrayed by anyone with good fighting capabilities and survival skills. Of course, Riverwind portrayed the ranger in the novels, but a fighter, barbarian, or actual ranger could work just as well. Monks or nobles with points in survival could also be interesting.
The Mentor needs to be one who teaches by example, is a steadfast friend, and counsels the others using his life experiences. Flint Fireforge was the mentor in the original story, and this role could be taken by any player willing to support the party as a whole, as opposed to looking out for himself could take on this role.
The Idealist is personified by Sturm Brightblade, a man who is fated to fulfill a destiny and would give up his life for it. This character should have some affinity with the Knights of Solamnia, though it is possible for a non-knightly character to rise to the challenge.
The Protector, as portrayed by Caramon Majere, must be one who is willing to place himself in harm's way for the good of the party. Obviously, this should be a fighter or barbarian or another tough character that can take a lot of damage.
The Ingenue is an innocent maiden in distress who comes into her own as a warrior woman by the end of the campaign. Tike Waylan was, of course, the ingenue in the Dragonlance Saga, but this role could be undertaken by nearly any character class or race willing to play the part.
Finally, there is the Hawk. The hawk is related to aggressive impulses. Driven by frustration or despair, this character seeks a foe upon which to unleash his aggression. Gilthanis fills this niche in the story. Any fighter-type (or perhaps a noble) could fulfill this role.
