The year is 1996. The place? The Mälaren islands, near Stockholm, Sweden. It's still famous for the "Loop", the massive 26-km diameter particple reactor buried deep in the Earth under the islands.

In the 1980s, adults were endlessly optimistic about science and technology. It was a time of Star Wars, of unlimited imagination. Swedish scientists were busy unlocking the mysteries of the universe with the "Loop". These efforts were led by the private-public company, Riksenergi, which operated the "Loop" on behalf othe Swedish people.

Now?

This is a different era, in the time of the "Flood". After the fall of Communism, the existential threats of nuclear war were replaced by a great and cynical nothingness.

In 1994, a catastrophic leak in the cooling system beneath the Loop facility causes hot, brown, gushing water to flood the northern parts of the Mälaren islands. Large sections of the north of the islands are rendered uninhabitable by the contaminated floodwaters, which will require a massive clean-up (likely extending well beyond the next 12 months).

The disaster displaces many people, some of whom are forced to live amongst their neighbors in towns like Stenhamra, which balloons in population and strains an already stressed region. The Swedish government shutters Riksenergi, forcing many people who worked at the Loop into unemployment.

Helsinki-based KRAFTA Corp, an international technology company, bought up the pieces of Riksenergi with the promise to clean up the mess that was left behind. They also re-hire some of the Riksenergi workers as part of the deal. It will take years, however, for the region to recover from the Flood.

You will play Swedish teenagers in the south of the Mälaren islands, living in an alternative 1995 that never was.

Their families are suffering, their futures are in flux, and the spectre of the Loop technology stains the land.
