The Watchman Watches in Vain [ EDIT ]

This game has been retired! That means it's no longer being run.
Hartley King, scion of the once grand Kingewyke family, hides in his gloomy mansion on French Hill. Once, Hartley led a band of investigators who hunted and chased the horrors that threatened Arkham. Despite the successes of their early days, the company of Arkhamites suffered terrible losses. Most went mad, died or fled to foreign shores as result of their adventures. Hartley himself lost his mind after a terrible encounter on Hangman's Hill and retired to his quiet hobbies. But still he receives letters from those who remember his Society and ask for help. He dare not return to action himself, but resolves to find new Arkhamites to take up the struggle. Men and women who remind him of the Society in its heyday, before the tide inevitably turned against them. He knows that, with time, they must meet the same fate. Nevertheless, he resolves to send letters to those he will request--and pay, if necessary--to take on the task of defending Arkham. For there is a danger that requires urgent attention.

>Trail of Cthulhu is an investigative horror role-playing game in which the players' characters investigate mysterious events related to the Cthulhu Mythos. We’ll set this adventure within 1920s Arkham , the classic setting.

Expectations. We’ll need to figure out a fun, light means of conducting investigations within the limitations of short, regular posts. A starting point will be that players will be responsible for declaring what investigative skills they are applying, limited to one or two at a time to keep threads readable.
>>>Emphasis on characterisation and role-play.
>>> I reserve the right to fudge/ simplify rules to keep things going

Game Duration & Post Frequency:
>>>Start with a short adventure to check the system is viable using PbP
>>>3-5 posts a week for potential players. Prefer folks not to vanish completely at weekends.

Player Experience Requirements:
>>>Open to everyone but does require everyone access condensed rules and give them a look through
>>> This is a detective, clue-based adventure so is best suited to those who enjoy puzzling and sleuthing
>>> some basic interest in Lovecraft’s literature and/or the 1920s would help contribute to the atmosphere of the game

Character Creation & Restrictions:
>>>pick a profession from those listed in the condensed rules and work from there. Most professions have at least one special ability so I can tell you about those from my copy of the rules.
>>> Initially, starting with a single character per player is the best option but once play has progressed a bit I'd be open to the option of players having multiple characters in play.

Sensitive Content:
>> Your character is more likely to die or go insane than in most rpgs
>>deals with issues of sanity/ insanity and is set in Lovecraft’s bleak Cosmos.
>>1920s setting may expose issues of class, gender, etc. but these will not

Application
>>>Leave a comment in the Interest thread expressing interest, please.

Are you sure you want to retire this game?
It will be moved to the Retired Games drawer at the bottom of your Games list. You can come back here and unretire it later, if needed.
Any future posts in this game will not show up in the normal notification systems (e.g. Front Page, Latest Game Posts, or email) and will only be visible by manually checking the game's threads.

Use the Condensed rules to pick a profession and assign points, etc. 65 build points on general abilities and 18 on investigative abilities. Let's 'switch off' pulp and other optional rules for this first play-through just to keep things simple.

From a GM perspective its easier for me if you make a stat block for your character like the one below. Please note that you are going to need to monitor the pool points for each skill --not sure how we can do this efficiently but perhaps just indicate using a (pool/rating) system like Astronomy (2/3).
