Spugnoir flings some fine sand from his pouch, which blows down the stairs and fills the room below.

The rats are dashing at Darf, impeded by rat d, which has begun tumbling down the stairs. Various other thuds hint that other rats in the room have also fallen victim to the spell.

Quick questions: how many attacks of opportunity would I provoke by Grumble running far enough into the room to cast Thunderwave and NOT hit Kaxaon? (15' range) I really don't want to kill all the rats AND the barbarian, so I want to try to get into the room. Wait - how far down is this basement? I also don't want to hit the people above me on the ground floor, which I would do if we're only 10' down...

"Good one!" Grumble calls back to Spugnoir, as he hurries down the stairs to Kaxaon's body in the doorway.
"Get his body while I take care of the vermin!" he calls over his shoulder, and then intones the syllables of Zerjian's Stormwrack (thunderwave): "Vashhh takra!", his free hand bringing his flat palm up and out. The spell is directed so that the cube of force extends from his palm outward into the room and extending downward (rather than up onto the floor above).

He will attempt to hit as many of the rats in the room as possible, but given that the floor extends more than 8' on either side of the door and IF it's not clear that there are more rats in one direction than another, then the cube will extend 7.5' to either side of Grumble and then 15' forward. Hopefully this will get most of the rats in the room (assuming that they've crowded at the door since our last map). Each rat in the area of effect gets a CON save to take half of the 2d8 damage and not get pushed 10'.

The wave of thunder rips the rats into the air, killing several and injuring many. Sleeping rats rebound from walls and ceilings and Kaxaon's body ripples on the floor beside you.

The rats keep coming. One runs up to fill the space, striking the source of the thunder.

Sick guilt twists Anrin's stomach, that he did not keep some of his meagre healing power for his fallen ally. Enraged by his own failure, he slips between his companions, and attempts to drive the rats back as if they were cattle.

A giant rat approaches you from the side of the room...enraged, it leaps for Anrin's outreached hand and causes heavy bleeding! (0hp I think)

Toast has pulled out, so we will be getting a replacement player soon. For now, I'll take care of him.

Darf runs to rescue Anrin, leaping into the group of rats now that they are distracted (no reaction left). Grabbing the body, he starts pulling it up the stairs.

The rats at the bottom of the stairs leap at him as he tries to drag the body up, colliding in midair whilst lunging at any available artery in hope of attaining tasty flesh. Darf falls onto the stairs, dropping the body back down to the ground.

Two rats appear out of the room and rapidly claim Darf's body, dragging it into the darkness of the room

Elmo appears at the top of the stairs, now desperate to prevent a catastrophe. Jumping down on the rats on the stairs, he cleaves his axe in a wide crescent. One of the rat falls hard, and the second rat dodges the body of his kin as it strikes the wall.

The rats can be heard fighting over their capture in the room below. One remains alive at the top of the stairs, defending itself furiously.

Matthias, seeing Elmo fighting to reach their fallen companion, attempts to clear the way, launching a bolt of fire at the rat that's engaged with Elmo.

Grumble looks in on Darf and shudders, wishing for once that he didn't quite have so much light. Then he attempts to close the door, with Anrin and Kaxaon on this side.

Kicking a sleeping rat into the room, Grumble hauls the door shut, shutting Darf in with the hungry rats. On this side, Kaxaon and Anrin breathe heavy, laboured breaths amongst the dead giant rats.

Elmo rushes to Anrin's aid, washing his wounds with mead and stemming blood flow. He begins to pull him up the stairs.

Kobort and Turuko brace themselves defensively, scanning for trouble.

PCs gain 30exp. Grumble gains a bonus 10

Kaxaon leaps up with a roar and stands there swaying, taking in the scene. He puts a hand to a wall to support himself. "Whichever one of you kept me alive, I thank you." he gasps.
