Village in Chult (3rd level, RETIRED)

Nov 18, 2018 11:15 pm
OOC:
This playtest is for the following adventurers:

Tok'ra - Slaad Symbiote
Rettle - Predator (basilisk)
Galtak - Predator (displacer beast)
Sedna - Primeval Stalker
Duren - Predator (wyvern)
Chult. This steamy, hot mess of a jungle has proved to be very difficult land to explore, but the rumors of treasure lures in many adventurers. This particular group of heroes has traveled for one grueling week, facing lizardfolk, monstrous plants, swarms of bugs, and poisonous reptiles.

Today they come upon a tiny village on the shores of the Shining Sea. It is the first taste of civilization the companions have had since their arrival in the jungle.

A dock with a small boat tied to it rests on the shore, jutting into the water. A few buildings make up the village, with a large and finely built structure at the center of it all.

A rapid river pours into the sea, filling the air with the steady sound of rushing water. The only figure visible in the tiny village slowly meanders across a small wooden bridge, entering a building that looks like it might be a tavern.

As they draw closer to the town, the companions hope for a reprieve from their recent toils...
Nov 19, 2018 2:14 am
Tok’ra’s left hand shades their lime colored eyes from the sun’s rays and then wipes sweat from reddening neck.
As their hand passes over their neck a tribal-like tadpole swims across the flesh and down towards the chest to settle into the shade provided by the half-elf’s shirt.
"We can’t speak for the collective, of course, but that village is a pleasant sight for our eyes. Shall we?" Tok’ra says as they point towards the tavern in the village, and those who are looking would see that same tadpole tattoo swimming up the arm seeming as if to look upon the village as well.
Nov 19, 2018 5:20 am
"We can see what this place has to offer but I would suggest we take care. It may be pleasant to the locals but terrible for us." Duren moves forward slowly his head on a swivel.
Nov 19, 2018 7:45 am
"A drink, aye! And outta this bloody sun!" Galtak laughs, slapping Tok'ra on the shoulder. The black-bearded duergar doesn't know his own strength; the playful blow lands like a whip, or one of those flails Galtak favors.

Rettle raises an eyebrow at Galtak and gives him a flat stare. "Or just a hearty stew. Why does it always 'ave toh be drink with ya?" He heads for the tavern.
Nov 20, 2018 10:29 pm
"Whether drink or stew finds us, being out of the sun sounds best to us,"Tok'ra says as they continue to walk toward the village with their group. The tadpole tattoo high on the collar bone, as if eager to be in the shade of the tavern.

OOC:
Moving on! Sedna can join in when/if she gets around to it.
The main path into the center of the village runs past a large building built like a warehouse. A stable is attached to the warehouse, and one of its large doors lies asunder. Dark shadows hide whatever might be inside.

A sound somewhere between a scream and a whinny erupts from the darkness, and four horses burst from the warehouse. Their coats seem patchy, and a black ooze flows from open sores in their flesh. The closest carries in its mouth a human arm.

OOC:
So for those of you who aren't familiar with how I usually run pbp combat, check it out HERE. Long story short, make your rolls and describe your actions for this round, and at the I'll piece together *when* it all takes place.

First thing: Start off with a Perception check, DC 13. If you pass you notice the sounds of the horses in time to be ready, and you can take your turn this round as normal. If you fail, you are "surprised" - and basically that means you don't get to act this round.

[ooc]Two apologies

1). Sorry the posting has been slow! Holidays and all that, plus I wrote out a nice long post and accidentally deleted so I had to try again later 🙄

2). Freaking horses! They dice are definitely in their favor![/

Round 1 Summary

The horses tear out of the warehouse like beasts from the Abyss. With crushing hooves they trample over the party, aiming for legs, heads, and chests with a fury like none of the companions has ever beheld from mere horses. Tok'ra takes an especially bad hit to the skull, and collapses in the dirt road.

Rettle takes 20 and is knocked prone
Tok'ra takes 25 and is dying
Galtak takes 10
Duren takes 21 and is knocked prone

The horses break away and turn about, ready to stampede once more. One of them catches Rettle's eye and starts tossing its head uncomfortably, obviously affected by the dwarf's basilisk gaze.

Round 2 Player Phase!!
OOC:
So, I only just now noticed that Duren has the alert feat, and so cannot be surprised. Because of this, Duren can act twice this turn. Basically he just gets 2 turns in a row to make up for not having had one last turn.

Also, all characters are 3rd Level, correct? You're going to need those hit points with how these horses are rolling!

(Btw, this is from a published adventure for characters of your level. Not trying to kill you!)

Now, the horses did move away last round in order to make room for another trample, so everyone can make an opportunity attack against them. Although, if you are prone (everyone except Galtak) your opportunity attack is made with disadvantage. Just make the opportunity attack first, and then make the rest of your turn.

Horse 1 is currently poisoned.

@MattParody - I'm cool with Tor'ak doing something as he goes down. Opportunity attack, or even a cantrip as your reaction for the 1st round. These horses are brutal.

@Carcabob - It's a little hard to see what's happened with your last post. Did you take an action, like Dash or something?
Nov 23, 2018 5:28 am
OOC:
He cast Zephyr Strike to increase his speed to 55 feet, then he went to climb to the top of the stable. After that he throws a handaxe at Horse 2.

EDIT: I forgot to include the extra force damage. I'll add it. He can throw the handaxe before he moves if the order of the attack and speed boost matters.
Nov 23, 2018 6:59 am
OOC:
@Carcabob - Oh, I see it now. Your speed is actually less than that, since you started your turn prone, but that's negligible once you cast Zephyr Strike.
Nov 23, 2018 3:06 pm

Did I miss something? My character is 1st level. Since when do you have foes who can do 20 plus points of damage to first level characters. If this is a playtest, I'd say it has already failed.
Duren is now dead. He took 21 points of damage while only have 11 hit points.
Nov 24, 2018 4:05 am
So I must have missed the details on the OOC post from November 1. My vision is so poor that I'm not surprised. I will roll a couple more d8's for additional hit points. Guess I'm still alive but with so few HP that there's little I'll be able to do.

Duren will try to regain his footing then move to the nearest horse and attack with his mace. (That should take two rounds worth of actions) Not sure he can actually do damage he will activate his poison ability if he actually hits the creature.

OOC:
@Aldrusian - Yep, this playtest is meant for 3rd level characters, like it says in the title of the thread. But sorry, I never really made that terribly clear!

Here are a couple of things that might help...

- Just go ahead and stick with the static hp gain that the PHB suggests for each level, which should put Duren at 4/25 hp currently.

- For weaponry, i recommend having a shortsword instead of the mace - although if the mace suits Duren's personality and story better, then by all means go with that. The mace would attack for 1d20+4 and do 1d6+2 damage. The shortsword is slightly better because it can use Dexterity, and would attack for 1d20+5 and do 1d6+3 damage.

- It looks like your first attack misses, but that's okay. As far as movement goes, reaching the horses should be no problem for you. Go ahead and take your 2nd turn with its own attack roll or whatever you choose to do with your action.

- Lastly, you get to make one opportunity attack at disadvantage. The nature of play by post makes the timing weird, but at the moment in combat that this happens, Duren has been knocked prone (disadvantage on attacks) but as the horse leaves him he does get in that swing with his 1st round reaction.

Fortunately, even with disadvantage there's a pretty good chance to hit, and all that extra poison damage should do some good against these awful horses.
Nov 25, 2018 3:50 am
Duren is able to get off a second swing at the horse but with disadvantage.

Rolls

Attack with mace and Wyvern's Poison with disadvantage - (1d20+4, 1d6+2, 2d6, 1d20+4, 1d6+2, 2d6)

1d20+4 : (14) + 4 = 18

1d6+2 : (4) + 2 = 6

2d6 : (33) = 6

1d20+4 : (10) + 4 = 14

Round 2 Summary

Moving with uncanny speed for one of dwarfkind, Rettle dashes for the warehouse and scales the side. He aims carefully, then hurls his handaxe with supernatural force into one of the horses below. The weapon buries itself deeply into the horse's flank. The horse screams in pain, but a flash of fire from Tor'ak's broken body ends the monstrous beast's cries.

Galtak stands solid, flail whirling out to crack against one of the horses. Two of them charge the laughing dwarf, ready to crash into him with thunderous hooves. Just as the animals collide with him, his form swells as he grows in size. One horse buffets him, but he keeps his feet. He catches the other horse with a meaty hand on its face and shoves it to the ground, toppling the creature. Where a moment ago stood a dwarf who should be crushed, now stands a warrior the size of an ogre. Though bruised and battered, he still looks ready to fight (Galtak takes 21 damage, which should knock him unconscious. But he rolled a crit on that strength save, so let's leave him at 1 hp. Also, with a roll like that he knocks Horse 4 prone).

Duren crushes the leg of one of the horrid beasts as it passes him. The horse stumbles as its leg shatters, and then the wound begins to blacken and swell as Duren's poison does its work. A moment later, the horse is dead (Sure, it should have had 2 hp left, but Aldrusian never made his attack for turn 2. I'm sure he would have hit it!).

Then one of the crazed animals smashes into the warehouse, shaking the wooden timbers and dropping Rettle to the ground. Rearing up on its hind legs, the horse brings its hooves down onto the dwarf's chest with a sickening crunch (Rettle takes 22 damage and is knocked unconscious).

BEHOLD!! After a long banishment to the planes of chaos, we have returned!

All of the subclasses have received updates and we've added several more! Instead of continuing on Gamersplane, however, we have a Discord server, though it will still be play-by-post. With the D&D Beyond integration, it should be just as easy as Gamersplane for our purposes, if not moreso.

If you're interested at all in re-joining the ranks, head on over and take a look!

It appears that the game has moved to a Discord server. Of course, that means I will not be joining. I see no need to play these games any more intensely than they already are right here.

OOC:
Araklusta prefers GamersPlane, but I wanted to try out Discord as a means of play-by-post not as a matter of intensity, but just as a way to experiment with usability. There's another DM running a game on there, but currently neither Araklusta nor I are running playtests right now on either platform. We've found we both get burnt out pretty quickly, haha.

We'll definitely let you all know if we start another playtest here on GamersPlane though! We have a bunch of new subclasses and are even working on a new class.
Jan 24, 2020 5:48 pm
I'm NO good at Discord but I will pop over there when I get a chance. I have thoroughly enjoyed the subclasses you have churned out thus far.
Jan 24, 2020 6:17 pm
With the Avrae bot, Discord offers some great conveniences, like character importing from D&D Beyond and built-in encounter tracking, but I think I've concluded that GamersPlane is better overall. It's just so much more natural to use.
Jan 25, 2020 5:39 am
Again, I apologize for my absence. I got hit pretty bad with anxiety/depression and I'm still dealing with that blow. It was never my intention to invite you all to play and then abandon you! If you've missed this stuff as much as I have, there's some good news to share: I'm starting to feel like this game can be a thing again. Be on the lookout for news here within the next couple of weeks!
