Into the Barrier Peaks

Cædwyn looks over the charred remains a bit, "Hmm, they don't look the key carrying type to me. Something else is going on here, I can't put my finger on it though." He looks up the hallway, "The design of this place doesn't make any sense to me. These creatures we've been fighting though, they're clearly not this place's original inhabitants. I think they're squatting here, and I'm not convinced that they themselves know how these doors work."

"They do seem a bit like guard dogs though. If there is someone here, controlling these creatures, they may have figured out how to open and close the doors. If so, these rooms could be like kennels. The, well let's call them controllers for lack of a better word. The controllers open a door someplace, monsters run into the hall, they close the door after they run out. We just encounter the monsters but we don't see where they come from, or who's controlling them. If I were to take these ruins of whatever they were, and turn them into a defensive structure, that's how I would do it at least. I think our best bet is to try to get through this place quickly and not worry about the doors for now. At least until we find a key."

Bram turns to Merri and says, "I hear something back at the intersection. I'm gonna go see what's going on." Bram turns and jogs back.

Ilwyn scratches her head at her fellow noble's extensive conclusion, about to nod along as her brain tried to process the mount of information before she became aware of Bram's interjection. "I'll accompany you." She states, setting off after the mage. "Going alone in a place like this would be foolish."

OOC:
Bram and Ilwyn were not together. I believe Ilwyn was back at the intersection with Caedwyn and Hraefn and Etna while Merri and Bram are well down the east corridor. Bram had just jogged back to the intersection after hearing some noise coming from that direction.

OOC:
Ah, my mistake. Scratch that, then!
Apr 28, 2019 10:00 pm
Bram
You quickly return to the others, who are engaged with searching through the remains of the plant creatures. You can still hear it, though you are not sure if it is from the west or south.
OOC:
I am not going to update the map just to show Bram moved, but assume everyone except Merriweather is at the combat intersection. There are several open doorways in this hall as well as down where Merri is.

OOC:
Bump. You are all at the combat intersection, except for Merri, who is at the far end of the hall. The map shows what you can (have) seen thus far, with the exception of the open doorways, which I elected not to conceal, so you can go and search wherever. Hraefn has been searching through the remains. Everyone else?

I'll rush ahead to the end of the hall with Merri, more worried about more encounters than in what could be in the other rooms right now.
May 1, 2019 5:22 pm
I move back towards the group. As I am passing Caedwyn, I'll say Only doors down there.
May 1, 2019 5:26 pm
Cædwyn nods and walks back with Merri then, "I see. Well we can give these rooms a quick rummage. It's not like people just leave keys laying about though. I think we might need to look into going down into one of these 'wells' we've been passing."
May 1, 2019 5:28 pm
If the doors have locks, I might be able to get us in.
May 1, 2019 9:58 pm
"These locks are unlike any I've ever seen, though. Just what is this place? A castle, a laboratory? Hells, even a tomb, perhaps..." Ilwyn shakes her head, the points onward. "Well, no use in standing about conceptualising. Let's check the rooms. Merri is correct, under normal circumstances, keys would not be left lying around... But I feel like the fate of this place's residents was anything but normal."
May 1, 2019 11:19 pm
"We know for certain some magic turned all the former occupants into these plant beasts, and they continue to roam these halls mindlessly. We haven't found the thing or being that caused them to become so. Again, by the curve of this external wall, and the fact that we've found another tunnel down, I'd surmise we have covered a quarter of this level. I suggest we move towards the centre when we are ready. That could be the source." Hraefn then showed what he found to the rest of the party. "I found another piece of equipment, if anyone wants to figure out how this works." Even as he did so, a flash of inspiration made him look for a slot in the equipment; he wondered if it operated the same way as the strange bottle-like one they found earlier in the camp, requiring a round disc of some sort to be slotted in.
OOC:
Suddenly realised I don't know how to add picture lol. DM, could you show the image to them? Thanks!

Bram will take a closer look at the device to know something of its workings.

Hraefn further looked for a slot, like the one the previous piece of equipment had.
OOC:
Um, who's holding the previous one?
May 3, 2019 1:13 pm
Hraefn
Looking the device over, you find no slot, but you do recall that Bram previously was able to open a hidden latch that revealed a coin inside the glass device you had found. (I assume) You hand it to him for further examination.

Bram
You investigate the new device, looking at the strange metal and leaded glass forming its body, and begin tinkering with it in an effort to discover its nature. Suddenly, you are not sure how, the leaded pane begins to glow a bluish color. You can see outlines of the party in the device, and one of the outlines flickers red. A whirring sound follows, when suddenly a beam of light erupts from the glass, striking Etna full in the chest. The light flows around her, and you swear that you can see the outline of her skull for just the briefest moment as she is thrown backwards.
OOC:
17 HP Necrotic damage to Etna from the effect of the blaster device. Disadvantage on next investigation of this specific device.

Cædwyn wasn't really paying attention to what Bram was doing with the device, but draws his sword almost instinctively when he sees Etna thrown across the room. He looks for the source of the attack, but only seeing Bram he yells, "Damnit! What was that?"
May 3, 2019 2:26 pm
Hraefn jumped towards Etna immediately, to look to her injuries. Out came the familiar berries, which he handed over. "Are you ok?"

Then, back to Bram, "It seems it's some sort of weapon, a weird wand. Handy, if it doesn't kill us first," the druid said, poker-faced. He took the item back from Bram, and tried to recall which face of the leaded glass pane the blast came from. From there, he pointed it squarely at the empty length of a hallway, taken care to face it in the correct direction. Only one part of the item looked like a handle, and he placed his hand over that, and began to look for a button or dial to push or turn, starting with the knob at the end of the handle, but not before whispering words of insight and protection first.
OOC:
Assuming Etna eats 17, current total is 54 goodberries.
