As soon as Etna is thrown off her feet Bram drops the device. "What in the 9 hells?" he exclaims. "I had no clue that was a weapon," he said as he stepped over to where Etna lay and dropped to his knees.

You examine the device carefully, trying to re-create what Bram had done. You manage to get it facing the direction you saw the beam of light erupt from, but getting it to work proves to be more problematic. However, as you closely examine the back, you found a hidden latch that opens up to reveal a coin just like the one Bram found earlier. This one has a sundial on it as well, though the line on it is in the middle, as opposed to the very left.

Pleased at his discovery, Hraefn described it to the rest. "From the last device, and this one as well, it seems this disc is used to power it. I am surmising that the markings on the disc indicate how much power it has left. The previous disc had markings all the way to the very left. If we insert this into the other one we will find we should be able to activate that too."

Hraefn readied himself to follow the party as they proceeded, but continued to fiddle with the new equipment, looking for the means of activation, still taking care not to point it at anyone.

"Gods' Teeth!" Etna exclaims through gasping and coughing trying to get her breath back. "Kicks like a mare, that does. Well at least we know what it's good for now." She takes Bram's hand and wheezes out a thank you, getting to her feet and gulping down the handful of berries in one. She proffers the other device to Bram and Hraefn at their mention, eyeing it skeptically.

Carefully studying the new device, you again point it down the hallway. A tinker here, a tinker there, and you are soon able to open and close the coin holder quickly and easily. Shortly after, you manage to figure out just how to aim the device and how to target something. It takes a couple of shots, but you figure it out. A third try brings disappointment, however. Removing the coin, you see that it is all the way to the left. You deduce that each line on the sun dial appears to represent a single discharge of blue light from the leaded pane.

"Yes, its effect is more powerful than some of the magic I can conjure. If we find more coins, this will be handy." Hraefn accepted the other strange device from Etna, and looked to see if Bram still wanted to explore its usage. They'd have to wait till they found more coins though, to activate the magic. In the meantime, Hraefn put both into his bag of holding.

OOC:

Does this mean Hraefn can instruct others on how to use the blaster, now that he knows? Or do the others need to individually roll to learn? And will learning this first one give advantage to learn how to use other devices?

Final one, regarding bonuses to hit roll, is it a ranged attack using dex modifier, or spell attack using spell modifier, or hopefully, either, depending on who's using it? :)

It is a ranged attack, so it will be a DEX modifier. Like any weapon, it is only as good as those wielding it, so I will say that you can impart advantage on skill checks for this device only (everyone has to practice and learn themselves). All devices are different, so learning one does not aid in the investigation of another.

OOC:

Where to now? If you wish to investigate rooms that are open doorways, indicate which one and roll investigations. Or, tell me which direction you wish to proceed if not investigating.

Cædwyn nods, "If it's a dead end up ahead, we double back. Keep to the right hand path until we cover this level. Might take a quick peek into those open rooms, just to make sure we're not attacked from behind, but I'd rather focus on covering as much ground as possible. We can do a more thorough search if we need to later."

"Agreed. Let's try and get a decent feel for the layout of this floor before going too deep. At the very least, it may give us some understanding of how later levels are organized, and maybe even some insight into what this place is." Ilwyn nods resolutely and moves to the front of the party, preparing to double back. "Caedwyn, could you make sure we aren't jumped from behind? For the moment, we can afford to take our time mapping this place. It's shown no signs of trying to pressure us deeper."

Moving up passed the open door where the plant creatures emerged, as well as a few black doors, the corridor makes a dog-leg west and then back north. Here, you find a few more open doorways. The 10' wide corridor you are on crosses paths with a large, 20' wide hallway that leads east and west. To the east, you can see the large mine shaft previously spotted by Bram and Merriweather.

Time in caves: 40 minutes

"I hear something behind us. Back down the corridor. Scout our back?" Hraefn's senses, sometimes more animal-like than human, picked up on a whirring sound behind them, and moved back towards the corner they turned, centering his thoughts as he did.
